Although coveted in applications, few materials expand when subject to compression or contract under decompression, i.e., exhibit negative compressibility. A key step to achieve such counterintuitive behaviour is the destabilisations of (meta)stable equilibria of the constituents. Here, we propose a simple strategy to obtain negative compressibility exploiting capillary forces both to precompress the elastic material and to release such precompression by a threshold phenomenon – the reversible formation of a bubble in a hydrophobic flexible cavity. We demonstrate that the solid part of such metastable elastocapillary systems displays negative compressibility across different scales: hydrophobic microporous materials, proteins, and millimetre-sized laminae. This concept is applicable to fields such as porous materials, biomolecules, sensors and may be easily extended to create unexpected material susceptibilities. Systems comprising water and hydrophobic cavities, with scales ranging from nanometres to millimetres, are shown to expand upon compression, an unusual mechanical property of technological and biological relevance known as negative compressibility. Substantial improvements in cycle life, rate performance, accessible voltage, and reversible capacity are required to realize the promise of Li-ion batteries in full measure. Here, we have examined insertion electrodes of the same composition (V2O5) prepared according to the same electrode specifications and comprising particles with similar dimensions and geometries that differ only in terms of their atomic connectivity and crystal structure, specifically two-dimensional (2D) layered α-V2O5 that crystallizes in an orthorhombic space group and one-dimensional (1D) tunnel-structured ζ-V2O5 crystallized in a monoclinic space group. By using particles of similar dimensions, we have disentangled the role of specific structural motifs and atomistic diffusion pathways in affecting electrochemical performance by mapping the dynamical evolution of lithiation-induced structural modifications using ex situ scanning transmission X-ray microscopy, operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements, and phase-field modeling. We find the operation of sharply divergent mechanisms to accommodate increasing concentrations of Li-ions: a series of distortive phase transformations that result in puckering and expansion of interlayer spacing in layered α-V2O5, as compared with cation reordering along interstitial sites in tunnel-structured ζ-V2O5. By alleviating distortive phase transformations, the ζ-V2O5 cathode shows reduced voltage hysteresis, increased Li-ion diffusivity, alleviation of stress gradients, and improved capacity retention. The findings demonstrate that alternative lithiation mechanisms can be accessed in metastable compounds by dint of their reconfigured atomic connectivity and can unlock substantially improved electrochemical performance not accessible in the thermodynamically stable phase. Liquid porosimetry experiments reveal a peculiar trend of the intrusion pressure of water in hydrophobic Cu 2 (3,3',5,5'-tetraethyl-4,4'-bipyrazolate) MOF. At lower temperature (T) range, the intrusion pressure (P i ) increases with T. For higher T values, P i  first reaches a maximum and then decreases. This is at odds with the Young-Laplace law, which for systems showing a continuous decrease of contact angle with T predicts a corresponding reduction of the intrusion pressure. Though the Young-Laplace law is not expected to provide quantitative predictions at the subnanoscale of Cu 2 (tebpz) pores, the physical intuition suggests that to a reduction of their hydrophobicity corresponds a reduction of the P i . Molecular dynamics simulations and sychrothron experiments allowed to clarify the mechanism of the peculiar trend of P i with T. At increasing temperatures the vapor density within the MOF' pores grows significantly, bringing the corresponding partial pressure to ≈5 MPa. This pressure, which is consistent with the shift of P i observed in liquid porosimetry, represents a threshold to be overcame before intrusion takes place. Beyond some value of temperature, the phenomenon of reduction of hydrophobicity (and water surface tension) dominated over the opposite effect of increase of vapor pressure and P i inverts its trend with T., (© 2024 The Author(s). Recent computational studies have predicted many new ternary nitrides, revealing synthetic opportunities in this underexplored phase space. However, synthesizing new ternary nitrides is difficult, in part because intermediate and product phases often have high cohesive energies that inhibit diffusion. Here, we report the synthesis of two new phases, calcium zirconium nitride (CaZrN 2 ) and calcium hafnium nitride (CaHfN 2 ), by solid state metathesis reactions between Ca 3 N 2 and M Cl 4 ( M = Zr, Hf). Although the reaction nominally proceeds to the target phases in a 1:1 ratio of the precursors via Ca 3 N 2 + M Cl 4 → Ca M N 2 + 2 CaCl 2 , reactions prepared this way result in Ca-poor materials (Ca x M 2- x N 2 , x < 1). A small excess of Ca 3 N 2 (ca. 20 mol %) is needed to yield stoichiometric Ca M N 2 , as confirmed by high-resolution synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction. In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction studies reveal that nominally stoichiometric reactions produce Zr 3+ intermediates early in the reaction pathway, and the excess Ca 3 N 2 is needed to reoxidize Zr 3+ intermediates back to the Zr 4+ oxidation state of CaZrN 2 . Analysis of computationally derived chemical potential diagrams rationalizes this synthetic approach and its contrast from the synthesis of MgZrN 2 . These findings additionally highlight the utility of in situ diffraction studies and computational thermochemistry to provide mechanistic guidance for synthesis.

An exploration of the synthetic and structural phase space of rare earth hybrid double perovskites A 2 B'BX 6 (A = organocation, B' = M + , B = M 3+ , X = molecular bridging anion) that include X = NO 3 - and B' = alkali metal is reported, complementing earlier studies of the [Me 4 N] 2 [KB(NO 3 ) 6 ] (B = Am, Cm, La-Nd, Sm-Lu, Y) (Me 4 N = (CH 3 ) 4 N + ) compounds. In the present efforts, the synthetic phase space of these systems is explored by varying the identity of the alkali metal ion at the B'-site. Herein, we report three new series of the form [Me 4 N] 2 [B'B(NO 3 ) 6 ] (B = La-Nd, Sm-Gd; B' = Na, Rb, Cs). The early members of the Na-series crystallize in the trigonal space group R 3̅ from La to Nd where a phase transition occurs in the phase between 273 and 300 K, going from R 3̅ to the high-symmetry, cubic space group Fm 3̅ m . The preceding trigonal members of the Na-series also undergo phase transitions to cubic symmetry at temperatures above 300 K, establishing a decreasing trend in the phase-transition temperature. The remainder of the Na-series, as well as the Rb- and Cs-series, all crystallize in Fm 3̅ m at 300 K. The temperature-dependent phase behavior of the synthesized phases is studied via variable-temperature spectroscopic methods and high-resolution powder X-ray diffractometry. All phases were characterized via single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopic methods. These results demonstrate the versatility of the perovskite structure type to include rare earth ions, nitrate ions, and a suite of alkali metal ions and serve as a foundation for the design of functional rare earth hybrid double perovskite materials such as those possessing useful multiferroic, optical, and magnetic properties.

Purification of C 2 H 4 from an C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 6 mixture is one of the most challenging separation processes, which is achieved mainly through energy-intensive, cryogenic distillation in industry. Sustainable, non-distillation methods are highly desired as alternatives. We discovered that the fluorinated bis(pyrazolyl)borate ligand supported copper(I) complex {[(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu} 3 has features very desirable in an olefin-paraffin separation material. It binds ethylene exclusively over ethane generating [(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu(C 2 H 4 ). This molecular compound exhibits extremely high and record ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 6 gas separation selectivity, affording high purity (>99.5 %) ethylene that can be readily desorbed from separation columns. In-situ PXRD provides a "live" picture of the reversible conversion between [(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu(C 2 H 4 ) and the ethylene-free sorbent in the solid-state, driven by the presence or removal of C 2 H 4 . Molten salts are promising reaction media candidates for the discovery of novel materials; however, they offer little control over oxidation state compared to aqueous solutions. Here, we demonstrated that when two hydroxides are mixed, their melts become fluxes with tunable solubility, which are surprisingly powerful solvents for ternary chalcogenides and offer effective paths for crystal growth to new compounds. We report that precise control of the oxidation state of Ni is achievable in mixed molten LiOH/KOH to grow single crystals of all known ternary K-Ni-S compounds. It is also possible to access several new phases, including a new polytope of β-K 2 Ni 3 S 4 , as well as low-valence KNi 4 S 2 and K 4 Ni 9 S 11 . KNi 4 S 2 is a two-dimensional low-valence nickel-rich sulfide, and β-K 2 Ni 3 S 4 has a hexagonal lattice. Moreover, using KNi 4 S 2 as a template, we obtained a new layered binary Ni 2 S by topotactic deintercalation of K. The new binary Ni 2 S has a van der Waals gap and can function as a new host layer for intercalation chemistry, as demonstrated by the intercalation of LiOH between its layers. The oxidation states of low-valence KNi 4 S 2 and Ni 2 S were studied using X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Density functional theory calculations showed large antibonding interactions at the Fermi level for both KNi 4 S 2 and Ni 2 S, corresponding to the flat-bands with large Ni-d x 2 - y 2 character.
