Along a climate gradient in the Chilean coastal mountains, we investigated denudation rates using the meteoric cosmogenic nuclide 10Be and its ratio to stable 9Be, and chemical depletion fractions (CDFs) in bulk soil samples. We find that the fraction of 9Be released from bedrock is a sensitive indicator of weathering, similar to CDF. Meteoric 10Be decreases exponentially with depth, reflecting the reactive nature of this tracer. We also measured denudation rates by the well‐understood in situ cosmogenic 10Be system on quartz. Assuming that both systems record the same denudation rate we calculated the depositional flux of meteoric 10Be for each study site. The flux agrees to that derived from atmospheric models in the mediterranean and humid areas. In contrast, in the arid and semi‐arid areas, the calculated flux agrees with a precipitation‐derived flux, indicating delivery of 10Be to be affected by small‐scale climatic variations not reflected by current atmospheric models. Plain Language Summary: To identify how geologic and climatic conditions control how fast soil is removed from the Earth's surface (denudation), we need to measure these rates over long periods, like thousands of years. A common method makes use of a rare radioactive nuclide, cosmogenic 10Be, formed by cosmic rays in quartz. However, if rocks do not contain quartz, an alternative system is provided by meteoric cosmogenic 10Be precipitated from the atmosphere and stable 9Be that is released during rock weathering. From the ratio 10Be to 9Be we can estimate denudation rates if we know the fraction of 9Be released by weathering and how much meteoric 10Be is deposited from the atmosphere per unit time and area. In a comparison with the quartz‐based method we explored these two unknowns on soil samples from four locations in Chile with different climates, all from granitic rock. We discovered two key points: (a) The amount of stable 9Be indicates soil alteration, which depends on water infiltration. (b) In arid climate, the deposition of meteoric 10Be is limited by rainfall, whereas in areas of sufficient yearly rainfall the 10Be deposition reflects large‐scale atmospheric distribution and is predicted by combined global cosmogenic nuclide production and climate models. Theory suggests that the response time of alluvial channel long-profiles to perturbations in climate is related to the magnitude of the forcing and the length of the system. Shorter systems may record a higher frequency of forcing compared to longer systems. Empirical field evidence that system length plays a role in the climate periodicity preserved within the sedimentary record is, however, sparse. The Toro Basin in the Eastern Cordillera of NW Argentina provides an opportunity to test these theoretical relationships as this single source-to-sink system contains a range of sediment deposits, located at varying distances from the source. A suite of eight alluvial fan deposits is preserved along the western flanks of the Sierra de Pascha. Farther downstream, a flight of cut-and-fill terraces have been linked to eccentricity-driven (100-kyr) climate cycles since ca. 500 ka. We applied cosmogenic radionuclide (10Be) exposure dating to the fan surfaces to explore (1) how channel responses to external perturbations may or may not propagate downstream, and (2) the differences in landscape response to forcing frequency as a function of channel length. We identified two generations of fan surfaces: the first (G1) records surface activity and abandonment between ca. 800 and 500 ka and the second (G2) within the last 100 kyr. G1 fans record a prolonged phase of net incision, which has been recognised throughout the Central Andes, and was likely triggered by enhanced 100-kyr global glacial cycles following the Mid-Pleistocene Transition. Relative fan surface stability followed, while 100-kyr cut-and-fill cycles occurred downstream, suggesting a disconnect in behaviour between the two channel reaches. G2 fans record higher frequency climate forcing, possibly the result of precessional forcing of climate (ca. 21/40-kyr timescales). The lack of a high-frequency signal farther downstream provides field support for theoretical predictions of a filtering of high-frequency climate forcing with increasing channel length. We show that multiple climate periodicities can be preserved within the sedimentary record of a single basin. Differences in the timing of alluvial fan and fluvial terrace development in the Toro Basin appears to be associated with how channel length affects fluvial response times to climate forcing as well as local controls on net incision, such as tectonic deformation. Beryllium isotopes have emerged as a quantitative tracer of continental weathering, but accurate and precise determination of the cosmogenic 10Be and stable 9Be in seawater is challenging, because seawater contains high concentrations of matrix elements but extremely low concentrations of 9Be and 10Be. In this study, we develop a new, time‐efficient procedure for the simultaneous preconcentration of 9Be and 10Be from (coastal) seawater based on the iron co‐precipitation method. The concentrations of 9Be, 10Be, and the resulting 10Be/9Be ratio for Changjiang Estuary water derived from the new procedure agree well with those obtained from the conventional procedure requiring separate preconcentration for 9Be and 10Be determinations. By avoiding the separate preconcentration, our newly developed procedure contributes toward more time‐efficient handling of samples, less sample cross‐contamination, and a more reliable 10Be/9Be ratio. Prior to this, we validated the iron co‐precipitation method using artificial seawater and natural water samples from the Amazon Estuary regarding: (1) the "matrix effect" for Be analysis, (2) its extraction efficiency for pg g−1 levels Be in the presence and absence of organic matter, and (3) the data comparability with another preconcentration method. We calculated that for the determination of 9Be and 10Be in most open ocean seawater with typical 10Be concentrations of > 500 atoms g−1, good precisions (< 5%) can be achieved using less than 3 liters of seawater compared to more than 20 liters routinely used previously. Even for coastal seawater with extremely low 10Be concentration (e.g., 100 atoms g−1), we estimate a maximum amount of 10 liters to be adequate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Examining the links and potential feedbacks between tectonics and climate requires understanding the processes and variables controlling erosion. At the orogen scale, tectonics and climate are thought to be linked through the influence of mountain elevation on orographic precipitation and glaciation; the only documented erosional processes capable of balancing rapid rock‐uplift rates are glacial erosion or coupled river incision and landsliding. Our 20 new 10Be derived catchment‐averaged denudation rates from the Western Southern Alps of New Zealand generally range between 0.6 and 9 mm/yr, within the same order of magnitude as fault‐throw rates, exhumation rates, and erosion rates estimated from suspended sediment yields and landslide inventories. Combining our data with previously published 10Be denudation rates, we find that the proportion of catchment area in the 1,500–2,000 m elevation window is the variable that best explains denudation rate variability and the disparity between rock‐uplift rates and denudation rates. This correlation indicates that enhanced erosion likely occurs at 1,500–2,000 m above sea level, where periglacial and paraglacial processes have been proposed to be most active. We find that these temperature‐controlled erosional processes, which are also elevation‐dependent, can play a greater role in modulating erosion during interglacials than precipitation or glaciation. Our data suggest that temperature‐controlled peri‐ and paraglacial erosion could be efficient enough to balance some of the fastest rock‐uplift rates on Earth. Hence, temperature‐controlled erosion could contribute to limiting orogen elevations and modulating the erosion rates dictated by rock‐uplift, playing an essential role in linking tectonics and climate. These erosional processes are often regulated by climate; for example, erosion is commonly more efficient where there are glaciers or in the wetter side of mountain ranges. We present 20 new 10Be concentrations, which are commonly used as a proxy for how fast drainage basins erode, from the Western Southern Alps of New Zealand, one of the fastest‐eroding places on Earth. We find that the rate at which these drainage basins erode is best predicted by the proportion of their drainage area that falls within the 1,500–2,000 m above sea‐level elevation window. This elevation range had previously been suggested to be where rocks are damaged and eroded through freeze‐thaw cycles. It is also the elevation window from which glaciers are currently retreating or have recently retreated, which can intensify erosion. Both freeze‐thaw cycles and glacier retreat depend on elevation and are related to temperature; therefore, we infer that temperature‐controlled erosional processes have likely dominated erosion for the last decades to hundreds of years. The hydrogen isotope composition of leaf wax biomarkers (δ2Hwax) is a valuable tool for reconstructing continental paleohydrology, as it serves as a proxy for the hydrogen isotope composition of precipitation (δ2Hpre). To yield robust palaeohydrological reconstructions using δ2Hwax in marine archives, it is necessary to examine the impacts of regional climate on δ2Hwax and assess the similarity between marine sedimentary δ2Hwax and the source of continental δ2Hwax. Here, we examined an aridity gradient from hyperarid to humid along the Chilean coast. We sampled sediments at the outlets of rivers draining into the Pacific, soils within catchments and marine surface sediments adjacent to the outlets of the studied rivers and analyzed the relationship between climatic variables and δ2Hwax values. We find that apparent fractionation between leaf waxes and source water is relatively constant in humid/semiarid regions (average: −121 ‰). However, it becomes less negative in hyperarid regions (average: −86 ‰) as a result of evapotranspirative processes affecting soil and leaf water 2H enrichment. We also observed that along strong aridity gradients, the 2H enrichment of δ2Hwax follows a non-linear relationship with water content and water flux variables, driven by strong soil evaporation and plant transpiration. Furthermore, our results indicated that δ2Hwax values in marine surface sediments largely reflect δ2Hwax values from the continent, confirming the robustness of marine δ2Hwax records for paleohydrological reconstructions along the Chilean margin. These findings also highlight the importance of considering the effects of hyperaridity in the interpretation of δ2Hwax values and pave the way for more quantitative paleohydrological reconstructions using δ2Hwax. While landscapes are broadly sculpted by tectonics and climate, on a catchment scale, the density of bedrock fractures can influence hillslope denudation rates and dictate the location of topographic highs and valleys. In this work, we used 10Be cosmogenic radionuclide analysis to measure the denudation rates of bedrock, boulders, and soil, in three granitic landscapes with different climates in Chile, with the hypothesis that high fracture density reduces grain size and increases denudation rates. Denudation rates range from 10 to 15 m Myr-1 for bedrock and boulders and from 15 to 20 m Myr-1 for soil in the humid and semi-arid climates, and are higher in the mediterranean climate (~40–140 m Myr-1), likely due to steeper slopes. We found that hillslope bedrock and boulders erode more slowly than the surrounding soil in the diffusively-eroding study sites. Furthermore, across a bedrock ridge in the humid site, bedrock denudation rates increase with fracture density. These findings are consistent with the observation that streams in our field sites follow the orientation of at least one major fault orientation. Our results suggest that tectonically-induced fractures and faults dictate landscape evolution through reducing grain size and thus enhancing differential denudation rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The tectonically active Taiwan orogen features numerous rivers that yield a high amount of sediment with fluxes exceeding 104 t/km2/yr. Amongst these, the landslide‐dominated Liwu River is well studied regarding its dynamic surface processes. However, the quantification of denudation in the Liwu Basin is still an ongoing task as rates obtained to date are subject to substantial differences depending on methods that differ in their spatio‐temporal scales. We constrain an upper limit of global denudation using the cosmogenic nuclide 10Be(meteoric) and its ratio to stable 9Be. Meteoric cosmogenic 10Be is delivered to Earth's surface by precipitation, whereas stable 9Be is released from rock weathering. In contrast to in situ cosmogenic 10Be measured in quartz, the 10Be(meteoric)/9Be ratio can be analyzed in quartz‐poor settings. 10Be(meteoric)/9Be‐derived denudation rates (Dmet) vary from 8.1 to >30 mm/yr in the Liwu mainstem, and from 3.4 to 21.5 mm/yr in the tributaries. These new Dmet are among the highest cosmogenic nuclide‐derived rates ever measured. Most of these rates agree with rates from sediment gauging or channel incision. We propose that stochastic landsliding plays a major role in denudation processes here. Using a soil‐bedrock mixing model and published riverine organic 14C data as a soil tracer, we estimate the fractional contribution of bedrock landslide material to mainstem sediments to be 55%–97%, which explains the magnitude and large variability (4‐fold) in Dmet. We demonstrate the complexity associated with denudation rates determination in landslide‐dominated routing systems; but also the potential of 10Be(meteoric)/9Be for tracing stochastic landsliding processes. Plain Language Summary: Many of Earth's rivers that transfer sediments with an extremely high rate are found in the Taiwan mountain belt, where earthquakes and typhoons are very common. Determination of the sediment removal rate in these rivers is crucial for understanding of the evolution of mountain landscapes through time and their impact on ocean chemistry and atmospheric trace gases. We applied a denudation rate meter to river sediments from one of the fastest‐eroding catchments in Taiwan, the Liwu River: the meteoric cosmogenic isotope beryllium‐10 (10Be) delivered by rainfall normalized to stable 9Be. This geochemical tool is particularly suited for fast‐eroding settings given the high delivery rate of meteoric 10Be to Earth's surface. The measured 10Be(meteoric)/9Be‐derived denudation rates in the Liwu Basin are highly variable and range from ∼3 to >30 mm/yr. We find that stochastic bedrock landsliding is likely the cause for such magnitude and large variability in denudation. Liwu river sediments constitute a mixture between steadily eroding surface soil and bedrock materials released from depths that lack meteoric 10Be. Our findings demonstrate the substantial potential of 10Be(meteoric)/9Be to trace sources of rainfall‐triggered landslides.
