The anions C |$_7$| N |$^-$| and C |$_{10}$| H |$^-$| are the two longest of the linear (C,N)-bearing and (C,H)-bearing chains that have so far been detected in the interstellar medium (ISM). In order to glean information on their collision-induced rotational state-changing processes, we analyse the general features of new ab initio potentials describing the interaction of both linear anions with H |$_2$|⁠ , one of the most abundant partners in their ISM environment. We employ an artificial neural network fit of the reduced-dimensionality potential energy surface for C |$_7$| N |$^-$|⁠...H |$_2$| interaction and discuss in detail the spatial features in terms of multipolar radial coefficients. For the C |$_{10}$| H |$^-$|⁠...H |$_2$| interaction, we use the initial grid of two-dimensional raw points to generate by quadrature the Legendre expansion directly, further including the long-range terms as discussed in the main text. Quantum scattering calculations are employed to obtain rotationally inelastic cross-sections, for collision energies in the range of 10 |$^{-4}$| to 400 cm |$^{-1}$|⁠. From them we generate the corresponding inelastic rate coefficients as a function of temperature covering the range from 10 to 50 K. The results for the rate coefficients for the longest cyanopolyyne are compared with the earlier results obtained for the smaller terms of the same series, also in collision with H |$_2$|⁠. We obtain that the inelastic rate coefficients for the long linear anions are all fairly large compared with the earlier systems. Studying larger nucleophiles in bimolecular nucleophilic substitution (S N 2) reactions bridges the gap from simple model systems to those relevant to organic chemistry. Therefore, we investigated the reaction dynamics between the methoxy anion (CH 3 O - ) and iodomethane (CH 3 I) in our crossed-beam setup combined with velocity map imaging at the four collision energies 0.4, 0.7, 1.2, and 1.6 eV. We find the two ionic products I - and CH 2 I - , which can be attributed to the S N 2 and proton transfer channels, respectively. The proton transfer channel progresses in a previously observed fashion from indirect to direct scattering with increasing collision energy. Interestingly, the S N 2 channel exhibits direct dynamics already at low collision energies. Both the direct stripping, leading to forward scattering, and the direct rebound mechanism, leading to backward scattering into high angles, are observed.

We aim to use topic modeling, an approach for discovering clusters of related words ("topics"), to predict symptom severity and therapeutic alliance in psychotherapy transcripts, while also identifying the most important topics and overarching themes for prediction. We analyzed 552 psychotherapy transcripts from 124 patients. Using BERTopic (Grootendorst, 2022), we extracted 250 topics each for patient and therapist speech. These topics were used to predict symptom severity and alliance with various competing machine-learning methods. Sensitivity analyses were calculated for a model based on 50 topics, LDA-based topic modeling, and a bigram model. Additionally, we grouped topics into themes using qualitative analysis and identified key topics and themes with eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI). Symptom severity could be predicted with highest accuracy by patient topics ( r =0.45, 95%-CI 0.40, 0.51), whereas alliance was better predicted by therapist topics ( r =0.20, 95%-CI 0.16, 0.24). Drivers for symptom severity were themes related to health and negative experiences. Lower alliance was correlated with various themes, especially psychotherapy framework, income, and everyday life. This analysis shows the potential of using topic modeling in psychotherapy research allowing to predict several treatment-relevant metrics with reasonable accuracy. Further, the use of XAI allows for an analysis of the individual predictive value of topics and themes. Background: In 2020, the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) pertussis case definition was modified; the main change was classifying polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-positive cases as confirmed, regardless of cough duration. Pertussis data reported through Enhanced Pertussis Surveillance (EPS) in 7 sites and the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS) were used to evaluate the impact of the new case definition., Methods: We compared the number of EPS cases with cough onset in 2020 to the number that would have been reported based on the prior (2014) CSTE case definition. To assess the impact of the change nationally, the proportion of EPS cases newly reportable under the 2020 CSTE case definition was applied to 2020 NNDSS data to estimate how many additional cases were captured nationally., Results: Among 442 confirmed and probable cases reported to EPS states in 2020, 42 (9.5%) were newly reportable according to the 2020 case definition. Applying this proportion to the 6124 confirmed and probable cases reported nationally in 2020, we estimated that the new definition added 582 cases. While neutral reactions involved in methane oxidation have been intensively studied, much less information is known about the reaction dynamics of the oxygen radical anion with methane. Here, we study the scattering dynamics of this anion-molecule reaction using crossed-beam velocity map imaging with deuterated methane. Differential scattering cross sections for the deuterium abstraction channel have been determined at relative collision energies between 0.2 and 1.5 eV and ab initio calculations of the important stationary points along the reaction pathway have been performed. At lower collision energies, direct backscattering and indirect complex-mediated reaction dynamics are observed, whereas at higher energies, sideways deuterium stripping dominates the reaction. Above 0.7 eV collision energy, a suppressed cross section is observed at low product ion velocities, which is likely caused by the endoergic pathway of combined deuteron/deuterium transfer, forming heavy water. The measured product internal energy is attributed mainly to the low-lying deformation and out-of-plane bending vibrations of the methyl radical product. The results are compared with a previous crossed-beam result for the reaction of oxygen anions with nondeuterated ̧methane and with the related neutral-neutral reactions, showing similar dynamics and qualitative agreement.

Objective: Improving prediction abilities in the therapy process can increase therapeutic success for a variety of reasons, such as more personalised treatment or resource optimisation. The increasingly applied methods of dynamic prediction seem to be very promising for this purpose. Prediction models are usually based on static approaches of frequentist statistics. However, the application of this statistical approach has been widely criticised in this research area. Bayesian statistics has been proposed in the literature as an alternative, especially for the task of dynamic modelling. In this study, we compare the performance of predicting therapy outcome over the course of therapy between both statistical approaches., Method: Based on a sample of 341 patients, a logistic regression analysis was performed using both statistical approaches. Therapy success was conceptualised as reliable pre-post improvement in brief symptom inventory (BSI) scores. As predictors, we used the subscales of the Outcome Questionnaire (OQ-30) and the Helping Alliance Questionnaire (HAQ) measured every fifth session, as well as baseline BSI scores., Results: The influence of the predictors during therapy differs between the frequentist and the Bayesian approach. In contrast, predictive validity is comparable with a mean area under the curve (AUC) of 0.76 in both model types., Conclusion: Bayesian statistic provides an innovative and useful alternative to the frequentist approach in predicting therapy outcome. The theoretical foundation is particularly well suited for dynamic prediction. Nevertheless, no differences in predictive validity were found in this study. We report quantum calculations involving the dynamics of rotational energy-transfer processes, by collision with He atoms in interstellar environments, of the title molecular species which share the presence of the CN backbone and are considered of importance in those environments. The latter structural feature is taken to be especially relevant for prebiotic chemistry and for its possible role in the processing of the heterocyclic rings of RNA and DNA nucleobases in the interstellar space. We carry out ab initio calculations of their interaction potentials with He atoms and further obtain the state-to-state rotationally inelastic cross sections and rate coefficients over the relevant range of temperatures. The similarities and differences between such species and other similar partners which have been already detected are analyzed and discussed for their significance on internal state populations in interstellar space for the two title molecular radicals.

Careful control of quantum states is a gateway to research in many areas of science such as quantum information, quantum-controlled chemistry, and astrophysical processes. Precise optical control of molecular ions remains a challenge due to the scarcity of suitable level schemes, and direct laser cooling has not yet been achieved for either positive or negative molecular ions. Using a cryogenic wire trap, we show how the internal quantum states of C_{2}^{-} anions can be manipulated using optical pumping and inelastic quenching collisions with H_{2} gas. We obtained optical pumping efficiencies of about 96% into the first vibrational level of C_{2}^{-} and determined the absolute inelastic rate coefficient from v=1 to 0 to be k_{q}=(3.2±0.2_{stat}±1.3_{sys})×10^{-13}  cm^{3}/s at 20(3) K, over 3 orders of magnitude smaller than the capture limit. Reduced-dimensional quantum scattering calculations yield a small rate coefficient as well, but significantly larger than the experimental value. Using optical pumping and inelastic collisions, we also realized fluorescence imaging of negative molecular ions. Our work demonstrates high control of a cold ensemble of C_{2}^{-}, providing a solid foundation for future work on laser cooling of molecular ions.

We present quantum structure calculations aimed at demon- strating the possible existence of dipole-bound states (DBS) for the anion C5N-, a species already detected in the Inter- stellar medium (ISM). The positive demonstration of DBS existence using ab initio studies is an important step to- ward elucidating possible pathways for the formation of the more tightly bound valence bound states (VBS) in envi- ronments where free electrons from starlight ionization pro- cesses are known to be available to interact with the radical partner of the title molecule. Our current calculations show that such DBS states can exist in C5N-, in agreement with what we had previously found for the smaller cyanopolyyne in the series: the C3N- anion. The predicted binding en- ergies which we found are 3 and 9 cm-1 for the 1Σ+ and 3Σ+ DBS, respectively. We present infrared predissociation spectra of C 2 N - (H 2 ) and C  3 N - (H 2 ) in the 300-1850 cm -1 range. Measurements were performed using the FELion cryogenic ion trap end user station at the Free Electron Lasers for Infrared eXperiments (FELIX) laboratory. For C 2 N - (H 2 ), we detected the CCN bending and CC-N stretching vibrations. For the C 3 N - (H 2 ) system, we detected the CCN bending, the CC-CN stretching, and multiple overtones and/or combination bands. The assignment and interpretation of the presented experimental spectra is validated by calculations of anharmonic spectra within the vibrational configuration interaction (VCI) approach, based on potential energy surfaces calculated at explicitly correlated coupled cluster theory (CCSD(T)-F12/cc-pVTZ-F12). The H 2 tag acts as an innocent spectator, not significantly affecting the C 2,3 N - bending and stretching mode positions. The competition between the bimolecular nucleophilic substitution (S N 2) and base-induced elimination (E2) reaction and their intrinsic reactivity is of key interest in organic chemistry. To investigate the effect of suppressing the E2 pathway on S N 2 reactivity, we compared the reactions F - + CH 3 CH 2 I and F - + CF 3 CH 2 I. Differential cross-sections have been measured in a crossed-beam setup combined with velocity map imaging, giving insight into the underlying mechanisms of the individual pathways. Additionally, we employed a selected-ion flow tube to obtain reaction rates and high-level ab initio computations to characterize the different reaction pathways and product channels. The fluorination of the β-carbon not only suppresses the E2-reaction but opens up additional channels involving the abstraction of fluorine. The overall S N 2 reactivity is reduced compared to the non-fluorinated iodoethane. This reduction is presumably due to the competition with the highly reactive channels forming FHF - and CF 2 CI - .

We report on the reactive scattering of methyl iodide, CH 3 I, with atomic oxygen anions O - . This radical ion-molecule reaction can produce different ionic products depending on the angle of attack of the nucleophile O - on the target molecule. We present results on the backside and frontside attack of O - on CH 3 I, which can lead to I - and IO - products, respectively. We combine crossed-beam velocity map imaging with quantum chemical calculations to unravel the chemical reaction dynamics. Energy-dependent scattering experiments in the range of 0.3-2.0 eV relative collision energy revealed that three different reaction pathways can lead to I - products, making it the predominant observed product. Backside attack occurs via a hydrogen-bonded complex with observed indirect, forward, and sideways scattered iodide products. Halide abstraction via frontside attack produces IO - , which mainly shows isotropic and backward scattered products at low energies. IO - is observed to dissociate further to I - + O at a certain energy threshold and favors more direct dynamics at higher collision energies.

The understanding of fundamental atomic-level processes often requires well-defined model systems. The oxygen atom transfer from CO 2 to a transition metal cation in the gas phase presents such a model system. We investigate the reaction of Ta + + CO 2 for which the formation of TaO + is highly efficient and attributed to multistate reactivity. Here, we study the atomistic dynamics of the oxygen atom transfer reaction by recording experimental energy and angle differential cross sections by crossed beam velocity map imaging supported by ab initio quantum chemical calculations. Product ion velocity distributions are dominated by signatures for indirect dynamics, despite the reaction being highly exothermic. Product kinetic energy distributions show little dependence on additional collision energy even with only four atoms involved, which hints at dynamical trapping behind a submerged barrier.

We report on the three-body reaction rate of C 2 - with H 2 producing C 2 H - studied in a cryogenic 16-pole radio frequency ion trap. The reaction was measured in the temperature range from 10 to 28 K, where it was found to only take place via three-body collisions. The experimentally determined termolecular rate coefficient follows the form of a · ( T / T 0 ) b with T 0 = 20 K, where a = 8.2(3) × 10 -30 cm 6 /s and b = -0.82(12) denotes the temperature dependence. We additionally performed accurate ab initio calculations of the forces between the interacting partners and carried out variational transition state theory calculations, including tunneling through the barrier along the minimum energy path. We show that, while a simple classical model can generally predict the temperature dependence, the variational transition state theoretical calculations, including accurate quantum interactions, can explain the dominance of three-body effects in the molecular reaction mechanism and can reproduce the experimentally determined reaction coefficients, linking them to a temperature-dependent coupling parameter for energy dissipation within the transition complex.

Background: Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is the most common cause of invasive H. influenzae disease in the United States (US). We evaluated the epidemiology of invasive NTHi disease in the US, including among pregnant women, infants, and people with human immunodeficiency virus (PWH)., Methods: We used data from population- and laboratory-based surveillance for invasive H. influenzae disease conducted in 10 sites to estimate national incidence of NTHi, and to describe epidemiology in women of childbearing age, infants aged ≤30 days (neonates), and PWH living in the surveillance catchment areas. H. influenzae isolates were sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for species confirmation, serotyping, and whole genome sequencing of select isolates., Results: During 2008-⁠2019, average annual NTHi incidence in the US was 1.3/100 000 population overall, 5.8/100 000 among children aged <1 year, and 10.2/100 000 among adults aged ≥80 years. Among 225 reported neonates with NTHi, 92% had a positive culture within the first week of life and 72% were preterm. NTHi risk was 23 times higher among preterm compared to term neonates, and 5.6 times higher in pregnant/postpartum compared to nonpregnant women. More than half of pregnant women with invasive NTHi had loss of pregnancy postinfection. Incidence among PWH aged ≥13 years was 9.5 cases per 100 000, compared to 1.1 cases per 100 000 for non-PWH (rate ratio, 8.3 [95% confidence interval, 7.1-9.7]; P < .0001)., Conclusions: NTHi causes substantial invasive disease, especially among older adults, pregnant/postpartum women, and neonates. Background: Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for pertussis is recommended for household contacts of pertussis cases in the United States within 21 days of exposure, but data on PEP effectiveness for prevention of secondary cases in the setting of widespread pertussis vaccination are limited. We implemented a multi-state evaluation of azithromycin PEP use and effectiveness among household contacts., Methods: Culture- or PCR-confirmed pertussis cases were identified through surveillance. Household contacts were interviewed within 7 days of case report and again 14-21 days later. Interviewers collected information on exposure, demographics, vaccine history, prior pertussis diagnosis, underlying conditions, PEP receipt, pertussis symptoms, and pertussis testing. A subset of household contacts provided nasopharyngeal and blood specimens during interviews., Results: Of 299 household contacts who completed both interviews, 12 (4%) reported not receiving PEP. There was no evidence of higher prevalence of cough or pertussis symptoms among contacts who did not receive PEP. Of 168 household contacts who provided at least one nasopharyngeal specimen, four (2.4%) were culture or PCR positive for B. pertussis; three of these received PEP prior to their positive test result. Of 156 contacts with serologic results, 14 (9%) had blood specimens that were positive for IgG anti-pertussis toxin (PT) antibodies; all had received PEP., Conclusions: Very high PEP uptake was observed among household contacts of pertussis patients. Quantum tunnelling reactions play an important role in chemistry when classical pathways are energetically forbidden 1 , be it in gas-phase reactions, surface diffusion or liquid-phase chemistry. In general, such tunnelling reactions are challenging to calculate theoretically, given the high dimensionality of the quantum dynamics, and also very difficult to identify experimentally 2-4 . Hydrogenic systems, however, allow for accurate first-principles calculations. In this way the rate of the gas-phase proton-transfer tunnelling reaction of hydrogen molecules with deuterium anions, H 2  + D -  → H -  + HD, has been calculated 5 , but has so far lacked experimental verification. Here we present high-sensitivity measurements of the reaction rate carried out in a cryogenic 22-pole ion trap. We observe an extremely low rate constant of (5.2 ± 1.6) × 10 -20  cm 3  s - 1 . This measured value agrees with quantum tunnelling calculations, serving as a benchmark for molecular theory and advancing the understanding of fundamental collision processes. Regarding OH - + CH 3 I, several studies have focused on the dynamics of the reaction. Here, high-level quasi-classical trajectory simulations are carried out at four different collision energies on our recently developed potential energy surface. In all, more than half a million trajectories are performed, and for the first time, the detailed quasi-classical trajectory results are compared with the reanalysed crossed-beam ion imaging experiments. Concerning the previously reported direct dynamics study of OH - + CH 3 I, a better agreement can be obtained between the revised experiment and our novel theoretical results. Furthermore, in the present work, the benchmark geometries, frequencies and relative energies of the stationary points are also determined for the OH - + CH 3 I proton-abstraction channel along with the earlier characterized S N 2 channel.

We present accurate ab initio calculations on several properties of a gas-phase system of interest in the interstellar medium (ISM), where the title molecular anion has been often surmised but not yet confirmed by observations. The CH - 3 Σ + constitutes the smallest term in the series of longer anionic polyynes which have been observed in the ISM (e.g., C 4 H - and several others). Hence, its dynamical behavior in collision with He atoms, one of the most abundant atoms in that environment, can provide quantitative indicators on the changes which can occur in the rotational state population of the title anion when driven by this collision dynamics. We therefore report an accurate evaluation of the full potential energy surface (PES) which acts between the molecular anion in its ground vibrational state and the He atom. The relevant inelastic scattering cross sections and the corresponding inelastic rate coefficients are then computed within a quantum treatment of the collisions. We find that the fairly small values of the final inelastic rate coefficients indicate state-changing processes by collisions to be inefficient paths for modifying the rotational state populations of this anion and therefore to aid its possible observation from direct radiative emission in the microwave region.

We report on reactive scattering studies of the proton transfer and combined hydrogen/proton transfer in the O - + CH 3 I reaction. We combine state-of-the-art crossed-beam velocity map imaging and quantum chemistry calculations to understand the dynamics for the formations of the CH 2 I - + OH and CHI - + H 2 O products. The experimental velocity- and angle-differential cross section show for both products and at all collision energies (between 0.3 and 2.0 eV) that the product ions are predominantly forward scattered. For the CHI - + H 2 O channel, the data show lower product velocities, indicative of higher internal excitation, than in the case of single proton transfer. Furthermore, our results suggest that the combined hydrogen/proton transfer proceeds via a two-step process: In the first step, O - abstracts one H atom to form OH - , and then the transient OH - removes an additional proton from CH 2 I to form the energetically stable H 2 O coproduct.

Purpose: Patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM) show heterogeneous outcomes, and approximately 60% of them are at intermediate-risk according to the Revised International Staging system (R-ISS), the standard-of-care risk stratification model. Moreover, chromosome 1q gain/amplification (1q+) recently proved to be a poor prognostic factor. In this study, we revised the R-ISS by analyzing the additive value of each single risk feature, including 1q+., Patients and Methods: The European Myeloma Network, within the HARMONY project, collected individual data from 10,843 patients with NDMM enrolled in 16 clinical trials. An additive scoring system on the basis of top features predicting progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) was developed and validated., Results: In the training set (N = 7,072), at a median follow-up of 75 months, ISS, del(17p), lactate dehydrogenase, t(4;14), and 1q+ had the highest impact on PFS and OS. These variables were all simultaneously present in 2,226 patients. A value was assigned to each risk feature according to their OS impact (ISS-III 1.5, ISS-II 1, del(17p) 1, high lactate dehydrogenase 1, and 1q+ 0.5 points). Patients were stratified into four risk groups according to the total additive score: low (Second Revision of the International Staging System [R2-ISS]-I, 19.2%, 0 points), low-intermediate (II, 30.8%, 0.5-1 points), intermediate-high (III, 41.2%, 1.5-2.5 points), high (IV, 8.8%, 3-5 points). Median OS was not reached versus 109.2 versus 68.5 versus 37.9 months, and median PFS was 68 versus 45.5 versus 30.2 versus 19.9 months, respectively. The score was validated in an independent validation set (N = 3,771, of whom 1,214 were with complete data to calculate R2-ISS) maintaining its prognostic value., Conclusion: The R2-ISS is a simple prognostic staging system allowing a better stratification of patients with intermediate-risk NDMM. The additive nature of this score fosters its future implementation with new prognostic variables.

Sepsis is a common illness. Immune responses are considered major drivers of sepsis illness and outcomes. However, there are no proven immunomodulator therapies in sepsis. We hypothesised that in-depth characterisation of sepsis-specific immune trajectory may inform immunomodulation in sepsis-related critical illness. We describe the protocol of the IMMERSE study to address this hypothesis. We include critically ill sepsis patients without documented immune comorbidity and age-sex matched cardiac surgical patients as controls. We plan to perform an in-depth biological characterisation of innate and adaptive immune systems, platelet function, humoral components and transcriptional determinants of the immune system responses in sepsis. This will be done at pre-specified time points during their critical illness to generate an illness trajectory. The sample size for each biological assessment is different and is described in detail. We report for the first time an accurate ab initio potential energy surface for the HeH + -H 2 system in four dimensions (4D) treating both diatomic species as rigid rotors. The computed ab initio potential energy point values are fitted using an artificial neural network method and used in quantum close coupling calculations for different initial states of both rotors, in their ground electronic states, over a range of collision energies. The state-to-state cross section results are used to compute the rate coefficients over a range of temperatures relevant to interstellar conditions. By comparing the four dimensional quantum results with those obtained by a reduced-dimensions approach that treats the H 2 molecule as an averaged, nonrotating target, it is shown that the reduced dimensionality results are in good accord with the four dimensional results as long as the HeH + molecule is not initially rotationally excited. By further comparing the present rate coefficients with those for HeH + -H and for HeH + -He, we demonstrate that H 2 molecules are the most effective collision partners in inducing rotational excitation in HeH + cation at interstellar temperatures. The rotationally inelastic rates involving o -H 2 and p -H 2 excitations are also obtained and they turn out to be, as in previous systems, orders of magnitude smaller than those involving the cation. The results for the H 2 molecular partner clearly indicate its large energy-transfer efficiency to the HeH + system, thereby confirming its expected importance within the kinetics networks involving HeH + in interstellar environments.

The detachment loss dynamics between rubidium atoms (Rb) and oxygen anions (O - ) are studied in a hybrid atom-ion trap. The amount of excited rubidium present in the atomic ensemble is actively controlled, providing a tool to tune the electronic quantum state of the system and, thus, the anion-neutral interaction dynamics. For a ground state Rb interacting with O - , the detachment induced loss rate is consistent with zero, while the excited state Rb yields a significantly higher loss rate. The results are interpreted via ab initio potential energy curves and compared to the previously studied Rb-OH - system, where an associative electronic detachment reactive loss process hinders the sympathetic cooling of the anion. This implies that with the loss channels closed for ground-state Rb and O - anion, this system provides a platform to observe sympathetic cooling of an anion with an ultracold heavy buffer gas.

Associative electronic detachment (AED) between anions and neutral atoms leads to the detachment of the anion's electron resulting in the formation of a neutral molecule. It plays a key role in chemical reaction networks, like the interstellar medium, the Earth's ionosphere and biochemical processes. Here, a class of AED involving a closed-shell anion (OH - ) and alkali atoms (rubidium) is investigated by precisely controlling the fraction of electronically excited rubidium. Reaction with the ground state atom gives rise to a stable intermediate complex with an electron solely bound via dipolar forces. The stability of the complex is governed by the subtle interplay of diabatic and adiabatic couplings into the autodetachment manifold. The measured rate coefficients are in good agreement with ab initio calculations, revealing pronounced steric effects. For excited state rubidium, however, a lower reaction rate is observed, indicating dynamical stabilization processes suppressing the coupling into the autodetachment region. Our work provides a stringent test of ab initio calculations on anion-neutral collisions and constitutes a generic, conceptual framework for understanding electronic state dependent dynamics in AEDs., (© 2022.
