Abstract

Digital Mammography is a popular technique for early, non-invasive, breast cancer detection. It is based on the identification and analysis of abnormalities in the breast tissue. Digital Mammography offers the potential for the development of algorithms that can enable computer-aided detection (CAD). This paper proposes such an algorithm based on a three-step process. The first step involves contrast enhancement using the Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) method. 2nd Step is Isolation of Pectoral Muscle from ROI: The medial oblique view has been improved, and the breast and lymph nodes are now more visibly visible in it. The pectoral muscle is kept separate from the area of interest for further investigation (ROI). "Region growth" enables the process of grouping pixels or smaller portions in the image to merge and become larger sections or regions on the basis of some preconceived specifications. The fundamental method is to start from the tip known as the "seed", and then grow in the area by adding adjacent pixels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The model is continuing to develop collaborative educational provision from level 2 to level 8 and is concentrating on expanding its digital research and innovation offering to the health and care sector in a similar co-developed collaborative way.

Abstract

The case study reported in this paper investigated the effect of project-based learning on students training to be mathematics teachers, pursuing their final projects. The final projects had the aim of designing attractive and interactive mathematics learning material. The case study used a qualitative method to assess the impact on the trainee teachers in terms of their creative design thinking. The research made use of the Hawgent dynamic mathematics software package. The study participants were all students at Guangxi Normal University, China. The students were divided into three groups, each with four or five members. The results presented show that selecting material and combining it with art using dynamic mathematics software can improve prospective teachers' communication skills, problem-solving ability, creative thinking, and self-confidence. Moreover, the future mathematics teachers needed motivation and support during their project's lifecycle, which, in turn, had a positive effect on self-confidence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Issues of non-use of available health information technology (HIT) have been referred to as the ‘last mile problem’ impeding harnessing the full potential of HIT. We reflect upon which competencies are needed to address the last mile problem by ensuring a context-sensitive implementation. We argue that there is a need for context-sensitive digital integrators, who can navigate the realm where technological systems meet practice. This entails a situated, socio-technical, context-sensitive approach and competencies which are not easily addressed through formal training but require lifelong situated learning, as the field evolves continuously. Our ambition is to highlight the complexities of implementation and integration into local practice. This paper emphasizes the role of digital integrators in the hope of fostering further discussions on how to acknowledge and nourish these competencies in order to address and go beyond the last mile problem.

Abstract

The WHO Health Emergencies Programme combined online tools with adult learning techniques to develop an innovative online leadership course. A combination of self-paced learning and online classes were used to deliver skills-based leadership training tailored to public health staff working in emergency response roles. Although using an online approach was considered a temporary solution to counter travel restrictions during the pandemic, the advantages have challenged preconceptions that effective learning, networking and peer exchange for leadership can only be achieved through face-to-face learning.

The Wales Institute of Digital Information has developed a flexible model of education, CPD, research and innovation for the Welsh health and care sectors, in the digital arena. The co-produced model had produced significant benefits for both health employers and the Universities involved in the partnership. The model is continuing to develop collaborative educational provision from level 2 to level 8 and is concentrating on expanding its digital research and innovation offering to the health and care sector in a similar co-developed collaborative way.
