Van der Waals heterostructures composed of low-dimensional atomic layers host rich physics for new device applications, such as magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene and coaxial multi-walled hetero-nanotubes. Aside from exploring their abnormal physical behavior, fabrication of such structures also presents a great challenge to this area, owing to the subtle and sensitive interactions among neighboring layers. Here we show by molecular dynamics simulations that narrow blue phosphorene nanoribbons can be encapsulated into carbon nanotubes driven by van der Waals interactions and form one-dimensional heterostructures. It shows that by varying carbon nanotube diameters and nanoribbon width, the nanoribbons can either retain their original straight structures or twist into tubular structures. Wrapping phases are also observed for large-sized blue phosphorus. It is found that the underlying mechanism originates from the competition between van der Waals energy and bending energy induced by tube curvature. A phase diagram of the resultant 1D structure is thus obtained based on a simple analysis of energetics. The results are expected to stimulate further experimental efforts in fabricating one-dimensional van der Waals heterostructues with desired functionality.

Airborne volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) are commonly quantitated by collecting the analytes on solid sorbent tubes or passive air samplers, followed by solvent extraction and instrumental analysis, or by grab bag/canister measurements. We report herein a user-friendly sampling method by breathing through polyurethane foam (PUF) face masks to collect airborne VOCs and SVOCs for chemical analysis. Specifically, dibasic esters, phthalate esters, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, linalool, and nicotine trapped on PUF masks were quantitated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis as model VOCs and SVOCs. Results showed that the amount of these model VOCs and SVOCs trapped on PUF masks is proportional to the exposure duration. After cross-validation by parallel sampling using XAD-2 packed sorbent tubes, the method was used to quantitate VOCs and SVOCs in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments with varying air concentrations of analytes, temperature, humidity, and wind speed. Because air pollution is considered a major cause of many human diseases and premature deaths and the developed PUF mask sampling method showed high trapping efficiencies for both VOCs and SVOCs, it is believed that the developed sampling method will find wide application in assessing air pollution-associated disease risks with possible extension to more classes of VOCs and SVOCs when coupled with suitable instrumental detection methods.

Stiff membranes on soft substrates tend to wrinkle under compression1–11. The evolution of post-wrinkle instability through wrinkling3,12, period doubling to quadruple folds, and/or creases4,9,11 with increasing compression has been extensively studied, but how to control this intriguing evolution remains challenging. Here, we obtain a scaling law for wrinkle evolution in which a single parameter, consisting of thickness contrast of the soft film to the stiff membrane and a material constant, determines the final instability order of the wrinkle evolution. In sharp contrast to the common view that the thickness effect of soft substrate is negligible as the thickness contrast reaches a few tens, the soft film thickness plays a dominant role for thickness contrast across several orders of magnitude. The law proves to be universal in a sufficiently large range of materials and geometries, thus, should play a general role in controlling the complex behavior of natural and artificial stiff/soft bilayer systems.

A double moir\'e superlattice can be realized by stacking three layers of atomically thin two-dimensional materials with designer interlayer twisting or lattice mismatches. In this novel structure, atomic reconstruction of constituent layers could introduce significant modifications to the lattice symmetry and electronic structure at small twist angles. Here, we employ conductive atomic force microscopy (cAFM) to investigate symmetry breaking and local electrical properties in twisted trilayer graphene. We observe clear double moir\'e superlattices with two distinct moire periods all over the sample. At neighboring domains of the large moir\'e, the current exhibit either two- or six-fold rotational symmetry, indicating delicate symmetry breaking beyond the rigid model. Moreover, an anomalous current appears at the 'A-A' stacking site of the larger moir\'e, contradictory to previous observations on twisted bilayer graphene. Both behaviors can be understood by atomic reconstruction, and we also show that the cAFM signal of twisted graphene samples is dominated by the tip-graphene contact resistance that maps the local work function of twisted graphene and the metallic tip qualitatively. Our results unveil cAFM is an effective probe for visualizing atomic reconstruction and symmetry breaking in novel moir\'e superlattices, which could provide new insights for exploring and manipulating more exotic quantum states based on twisted van der Waals heterostructures.

Quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators possess exotic properties driven by novel topological physics, but related studies and potential applications have been hindered by the ultralow temperatures required to sustain the operating mechanisms dictated by key material parameters. Here, using first-principles calculations, we predict a robust QAH state in monolayer TiTe that exhibits a high ferromagnetic Curie temperature of 650 K and a sizable band gap of 261 meV. These outstanding benchmark properties stem from the Te atom's large size that favors ferromagnetic kinetic exchange with the neighboring Ti atoms and strong spin-orbit coupling that creates a QAH state by adding a mass term to the Dirac half-semimetal state. The pine sawyer beetle, Monochamus alternatus Hope, is a devastating wood borer of several species of pine trees, and the main transmitting vector of the pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner et Buhrer) Nickle (Aphelenchida: Parasitaphelenchidae). To explore new techniques for prevention and control of this destructive beetle, a novel gene vacuolar ATPase subunit H (V-ATPase H) was chosen as RNA interference (RNAi) target gene. Relative expression of V-ATPase H in different tissues and silencing efficiency in an in vitro RNAi experiment was assayed by using reverse transcription–quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The results indicated that the mRNA abundance of V-ATPase H in the gut was significantly higher than that in fat body, residual body, and hemolymph. Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) targeting V-ATPase H was able to silence the expression of target gene effectively at 24 h posttreatment. Expression of immunity-related genes was examined after treatment with dsRNA targeting V-ATPase H, and transcript levels were compared with the control. The results showed that RNAi suppression of V-ATPase H inhibited the expression of immunity-related genes. This is the first demonstration of an in vitro RNAi experiment in any insect hemolymph that provides a novel environment for evaluating RNAi in insects, as well as shows potential for developing RNAi-mediated strategy for the control of M. alternatus.

Single-metal-atom chains (SMACs), as the smallest one-dimensional structure, have intriguing physical and chemical properties. Although several SMACs have been realized so far, their controllable fabrication remains challenging due to the need to arrange single atoms in an atomically precise manner. Here we develop a chemical vapour co-deposition method to construct a wafer-scale network of platinum SMACs in atom-thin films. The obtained atomic chains possess an average length of up to ~17 nm and a high density of over 10 wt%. Interestingly, as a consequence of the electronic delocalization of platinum atoms along the chain, this atomically coherent one-dimensional channel delivers a metallic behaviour, as revealed by electronic measurements, first-principles calculations and complex network modelling. Our strategy is potentially extendable to other transition metals such as cobalt, enriching the toolbox for manufacturing SMACs and paving the way for the fundamental study of one-dimensional systems and the development of devices comprising monoatomic chains. Lubrication induced by a vertical electric field or bias voltage is typically not applicable to two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) crystals. By performing extensive first-principles calculations, we reveal that the interlayer friction and shear resistance of Janus transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) MoXY (X/Y = S, Se, or Te, and X ≠ Y) bilayers under a constant normal force mode can be reduced by applying vertical electric fields. The maximum interlayer sliding energy barriers between AA and AB stacking of bilayers MoSTe, MoSeTe, and MoSSe decrease as the positive electric field increases because of the more significant counteracting effect from the electric field energy and the more significant enhancement in interlayer charge transfer in AA stacking. Meanwhile, the presence of negative electric fields decreases the interlayer friction of bilayer MoSTe, because the electronegativity difference between Te and S atoms reduces the interfacial atom charge differences between AA and AB stacking. These results reveal an electro-lubrication mechanism for the heterogeneous interfaces of 2D Janus TMDs.

Water is a colossal reservoir of clean energy as it adsorbs thirty-five percent of solar energy reaching the Earth's surface. More than half of the adsorbed energy turns into latent heat for water evaporation, driving the water cycle of the Earth.

Ferroelasticity, ferromagnetism, half-metallicity, and topological Dirac states are properties highly sought in two-dimensional (2D) materials for advanced device applications. Here, we report first-principles prediction of a dynamically and thermally stable tetragonal vanadium phosphide (t-VP) monolayer that hosts all these desirable properties. This monolayer is substantially ferromagnetic with polarized spins aligned in the in-plane direction

Iron arsenide (FeAs) monolayers are known as a key component for building iron-based superconductors. Here, we predict by first-principles calculations that the FeAs monolayer is a highly stable and multiferroic material with coexisting ferroelasticity and antiferromagnetism. The ferroelasticity entails a reversible elastic strain of as large as 18% and an activation barrier of 20 meV per atom, attributed to a weak hybridization between Fe d and As p orbitals. The local moments of Fe atoms are oriented out-of-plane, so that the magnetic ordering is weakly coupled to the structural polarization. Interestingly, fluorination of the FeAs monolayer can align the local moments in parallel and reorient the easy axis along the in-plane direction. As such, the fluorinated FeAs monolayer is potentially a long-sought multiferroic material that enables a strong coupling between ferroelasticity and ferromagnetism.

Chitosan oligosaccharides are the main degradation products from chitosan or chitin and have been reported to induce resistance to diseases in herbaceous plants like cucumber andArabidopsis. Concomitantly, pine wilt disease is a devastating disease of conifer tree species. Here, we hypothesized that chitosan oligosaccharides induce plant resistance gene (PRG) expression in the woody plant Masson pine,Pinus massoniana. Chitosan oligosaccharides were inoculated intoP. massonianaseedlings and the BGISEQ-500 platform was used to generate transcriptomes from chitosan oligosaccharide-treatedP. massonianaand control seedlings. A total of 501 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified by comparing the treatment and control groups. A total of 251 (50.1%) DEGs were up-regulated in the treatment relative to the control seedlings and 250 (49.9%) were down-regulated. Inoculation of chitosan oligosaccharide induced the expression of 31 PRGs inP. massonianaseedlings and the relative expression levels of six of the PRGs were verified by RT-qPCR. This is the first study to demonstrate that chitosan oligosaccharide induces the expression of PRGs in a tree species. These results provide important insights into the function of chitosan oligosaccharides and further the prospects of developing a chitosan oligosaccharide-based immune inducer for controlling pine wilt disease.

We found a new periodic fracture behavior of stiff nanomembrane, encoded by periodic buckling pattern in the 90° peeled nanomembrane overlaid on soft film. The fracture rout is strictly straight and the period is tunable.

Two-dimensional magnets could potentially revolutionize information technology, but their potential application to cooling technology and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in a material down to the monolayer limit remain unexplored. Herein, we reveal through multiscale calculations the existence of giant MCE and its strain tunability in monolayer magnets such as CrX$_3$ (X=F, Cl, Br, I), CrAX (A=O, S, Se; X=F, Cl, Br, I), and Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$. The maximum adiabatic temperature change ($\Delta T_\text{ad}^\text{max}$), maximum isothermal magnetic entropy change, and specific cooling power in monolayer CrF$_3$ are found as high as 11 K, 35 $\mu$Jm$^{-2}$K$^{-1}$, and 3.5 nWcm$^{-2}$ under a magnetic field of 5 T, respectively. A 2% biaxial and 5% $a$-axis uniaxial compressive strain can remarkably increase $\Delta T_\text{ad}^\text{max}$ of CrCl$_3$ and CrOF by 230% and 37% (up to 15.3 and 6.0 K), respectively. It is found that large net magnetic moment per unit area favors improved MCE. These findings advocate the giant-MCE monolayer magnets, opening new opportunities for magnetic cooling at nanoscale.

Nanopore techniques offer a low-cost, label-free, and high-throughput platform that could be used in single-molecule biosensing and in particular DNA sequencing. Since 2010, graphene and other two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted considerable attention as membranes for producing nanopore devices, owing to their subnanometer thickness that can in theory provide the highest possible spatial resolution of detection. Moreover, 2D materials can be electrically conductive, which potentially enables alternative measurement schemes relying on the transverse current across the membrane material itself and thereby extends the technical capability of traditional ionic current-based nanopore devices. In this review, we discuss key advances in experimental and computational research into DNA sensing with nanopores built from 2D materials, focusing on both the ionic current and transverse current measurement schemes. Challenges associated with the development of 2D material nanopores toward DNA sequencing are further analyzed, concentrating on lowering the noise levels, slowing down DNA translocation, and inhibiting DNA fluctuations inside the pores. Finally, we overview future directions of research that may expedite the emergence of proof-of-concept DNA sequencing with 2D material nanopores.

The coalescence of randomly distributed grains with different crystallographic orientations can result in pervasive grain boundaries (GBs) in 2D materials during their chemical synthesis. GBs not only are the inherent structural imperfection that causes influential impacts on structures and properties of 2D materials, but also have emerged as a platform for exploring unusual physics and functionalities stemming from dramatic changes in local atomic organization and even chemical makeup. Here, recent advances in studying the formation mechanism, atomic structures, and functional properties of GBs in a range of 2D materials are reviewed. By analyzing the growth mechanism and the competition between far-field strain and local chemical energies of dislocation cores, a complete understanding of the rich GB morphologies as well as their dependence on lattice misorientations and chemical compositions is presented. Mechanical, electronic, and chemical properties tied to GBs in different materials are then discussed, towards raising the concept of using GBs as a robust atomic-scale scaffold for realizing tailored functionalities, such as magnetism, luminescence, and catalysis. Finally, the future opportunities in retrieving GBs for making functional devices and the major challenges in the controlled formation of GB structures for designed applications are commented.

Flexible intelligent materials are desired to effectively regulate their own deformation and accurately sense their immediate morphology at the same time. Graphene foam is an attractive material for strain sensing and electrical/thermal performance control due to its outstanding mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. However, graphene-foam-based materials with both strain sensing and deformation control capabilities are rarely reported. Here, a multiscale design of graphene foam with a single-layer-graphene-dominated microstructure and resilient 3D network architecture, which leads to exceptional strain sensing performance as well as modulation ability of the electrical and thermal conductivity for shape memory polymers, is reported. The graphene foams exhibit a strain detection limit of 0.033%, a rapid response of 53 ms, long-term stability over 10 000 cycles, significant thermoacoustic effect, and great heat-generation and heat-diffusion ability. By combining these advantages, an electro-activated shape-memory composite that is capable of monitoring its own shape state during its morphing process, is demonstrated.

By screening 56 magnetic 2D monolayers via first-principles calculations, 4 magnetic 2D monolayers can be activated via strain engineering as catalysts for the OER in which the overpotential of the CoO2 monolayer decreases to 0.372 V under 4.0% εxy.
