1. Properties of contact toric structures and concave boundaries of linear plumbings

Abstract

We consider plumbings of symplectic disk bundles over spheres admitting concave contact boundary, with the goal of understanding the geometric properties of the boundary contact structure in terms of the data of the plumbing. We focus on the linear plumbing case in this article. We study the properties of the contact structure using two different sets of tools. First, we prove that all such contact manifolds have a global contact toric structure, and use tools from toric geometry to identify when the contact structure is tight versus overtwisted. Second, we study algebraic torsion measurements from embedded contact homology for these concavely induced contact manifolds, which has largely been unexplored. We develop a toolkit establishing existence and constraints of pseudoholomorphic curves adapted to the Morse-Bott Reeb dynamics of these plumbing examples, to provide the algebraic torsion and contact invariant calculations for the concave boundaries of linear plumbings., Comment: 66 pages, 26 figures, comments welcome!

3. Spinal open books and symplectic fillings with exotic fibers

Abstract

Spinal open book decompositions provide a natural generalization of open book decompositions. We show that any minimal symplectic filling of a contact 3-manifold supported by a planar spinal open book is deformation equivalent to the complement of a positive multisection in a bordered Lefschetz fibration, which generalizes a result of Wendl. Along the way, we give an explicit local model for a non-compactly supported singularity in a generalized version of bordered Lefschetz fibrations, given by pseudoholomorphic foliations associated to the spinal open books. This provides new tools to classify symplectic fillings of a contact 3-manifold that is not supported by an amenable spinal open book, by studying monodromy factorizations in the newly defined spinal mapping class group. As an application, we complete the classification of strong fillings of all parabolic torus bundles, and make progress towards classifying symplectic fillings of contact 3-manifolds supported by non-planar open books., Comment: 51 pages, 15 figures, comments welcome

Abstract

Background Cardiovascular disease, mainly atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, is the first cause of death for urban and rural residents in China. Low density lipoprotein cholesterol is the pathogenic risk factor of ASCVD. Objective By establishing a new outpatient model for blood lipid management, to analyze the awareness rate of abnormal blood lipids in patients before and after the establishment of the new model, the proportion of rational drug use, patient compliance, and medication compliance rate. Methods From September 1, 2023 to February 28, 2024, has established a comprehensive outpatient model for managing blood lipid abnormalities based on scientific research projects by integrating medical resources. The model takes the outpatient service of "patients with dyslipidemia" as the carrier, and collaborates with specialized doctors and general practitioners to standardize the management of dyslipidemia patients, optimize the consultation and follow-up process, effectively screen the population with dyslipidemia, diagnose hyperlipidemia patients, and provide correct treatment methods. Results The model of patients with dyslipidemia included in the management of chronic diseases has shifted from a dispersed model to a comprehensive, standardized, and centralized management of lipid management outpatient services, and the number of patients managed has significantly increased compared to before. The proportion of standardized medication for first-time patients in our blood lipid management outpatient department has increased from 25.3% (147/580) to 30.3% (242/798), the proportion of adherence to medication has increased from 32.7% (190/580) to 41.6% (332/798), and the compliance rate of medication has increased from 15.8% (92/580) to 22.5% (180/798) (P

6. Spin(7)-instantons on Joyce's first examples of compact Spin(7)-manifolds

Abstract

We construct $Spin(7)$-instantons on one of Joyce's compact $Spin(7)$-manifolds. The underlying compact $Spin(7)$-manifold given by Joyce is the same as in Lewis' construction of $Spin(7)$-instantons. However, our construction method and the resulting instantons are new. The compact $Spin(7)$-manifold is constructed by gluing a $Spin(7)$-orbifold and certain local model spaces around the orbifold singularities. We construct our instantons by gluing non-flat connections on the local model spaces to a flat connection on the $Spin(7)$-orbifold. Abstract

We prove that the examples by Smith and McMullen-Taubes provide infinitely many counterexamples to one direction of Donaldson's 4-6 question and the closely related Stabilising Conjecture. These are the first known counterexamples. In the other direction, we show that the Gromov-Witten invariants of two simply-connected closed symplectic $4$-manifolds, whose products with $(S^2,\omega_{\text{std}})$ are deformation equivalent, agree. In particular, when $b_2^+ \geq 2$, these $4$-manifolds have the same Seiberg-Witten invariants. Furthermore, one can replace $(S^2,\omega_{\text{std}})$ by $(S^2,\omega_{\text{std}})^k$ for any $k \geq 1$ in both results., Comment: 19 pages, no figures, comments welcome

Vianna constructed infinitely many exotic Lagrangian tori in the complex projective plane. We lift these tori to higher-dimensional projective spaces and show that they remain non-symplectomorphic. Abstract

A wireless federated learning system is investigated by allowing a server and workers to exchange uncoded information via orthogonal wireless channels. Since the workers frequently upload local gradients to the server via bandwidth-limited channels, the uplink transmission from the workers to the server becomes a communication bottleneck. Therefore, a one-shot distributed principle component analysis (PCA) is leveraged to reduce the dimension of uploaded gradients such that the communication bottleneck is relieved. A PCA-based wireless federated learning (PCA-WFL) algorithm and its accelerated version (i.e., PCA-AWFL) are proposed based on the low-dimensional gradients and the Nesterov's momentum. For the non-convex loss functions, a finite-time analysis is performed to quantify the impacts of system hyper-parameters on the convergence of the PCA-WFL and PCA-AWFL algorithms. The PCA-AWFL algorithm is theoretically certified to converge faster than the PCA-WFL algorithm. Besides, the convergence rates of PCA-WFL and PCA-AWFL algorithms quantitatively reveal the linear speedup with respect to the number of workers over the vanilla gradient descent algorithm. Numerical results are used to demonstrate the improved convergence rates of the proposed PCA-WFL and PCA-AWFL algorithms over the benchmarks.

11. Legendrian embedded contact homology

Abstract

We give a construction of embedded contact homology (ECH) for a contact $3$-manifold $Y$ with convex sutured boundary and a pair of Legendrians $\Lambda_+$ and $\Lambda_-$ contained in $\partial Y$ satisfying an exactness condition. The chain complex is generated by certain configurations of closed Reeb orbits of $Y$ and Reeb chords of $\Lambda_+$ to $\Lambda_-$. The main ingredients include: a general Legendrian adjunction formula for curves in $\mathbb{R} \times Y$ with boundary on $\mathbb{R} \times \Lambda$; a relative writhe bound for curves in contact $3$-manifolds asymptotic to Reeb chords; and a Legendrian ECH index with an accompanying ECH index inequality. The (action filtered) Legendrian ECH of any pair $(Y,\Lambda)$ of a closed contact $3$-manifold $Y$ and a Legendrian link $\Lambda$ can also be defined using this machinery after passing to a sutured link complement. This work builds on ideas present in Colin-Ghiggini-Honda's proof of the equivalence of Heegaard-Floer homology and ECH. 12. Fast-BEV: Towards Real-time On-vehicle Bird's-Eye View Perception

Abstract

Recently, the pure camera-based Bird's-Eye-View (BEV) perception removes expensive Lidar sensors, making it a feasible solution for economical autonomous driving. However, most existing BEV solutions either suffer from modest performance or require considerable resources to execute on-vehicle inference. This paper proposes a simple yet effective framework, termed Fast-BEV, which is capable of performing real-time BEV perception on the on-vehicle chips. Towards this goal, we first empirically find that the BEV representation can be sufficiently powerful without expensive view transformation or depth representation. Starting from M2BEV baseline, we further introduce (1) a strong data augmentation strategy for both image and BEV space to avoid over-fitting (2) a multi-frame feature fusion mechanism to leverage the temporal information (3) an optimized deployment-friendly view transformation to speed up the inference. Through experiments, we show Fast-BEV model family achieves considerable accuracy and efficiency on edge. In particular, our M1 model (R18@256x704) can run over 50FPS on the Tesla T4 platform, with 47.0% NDS on the nuScenes validation set. Our largest model (R101@900x1600) establishes a new state-of-the-art 53.5% NDS on the nuScenes validation set. 14. Fixed-point-free pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms, knot Floer homology and the cinquefoil

Abstract

Given any genus-two, hyperbolic, fibered knot in $S^3$ with nonzero fractional Dehn twist coefficient, we show that its pseudo-Anosov representative has a fixed point. Combined with recent work of Baldwin--Hu--Sivek, this proves that knot Floer homology detects the cinquefoil knot $T(2,5)$, and that the cinquefoil is the only genus-two L-space knot in $S^3$. Our results have applications to Floer homology of cyclic branched covers over knots in $S^3$, to $\mathit{SU}(2)$-abelian Dehn surgeries, and to Khovanov and annular Khovanov homology. Along the way to proving our fixed point result, we describe a small list of train tracks carrying all pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms in most strata on the punctured disk. As a consequence, we find a canonical track $\tau$ carrying all pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms in a particular stratum $\mathcal{Q}_0$ on the genus-two surface, and describe every fixed-point-free pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism in $\mathcal{Q}_0$., Comment: Reorganized the paper, corrected typos and added more expositions on tight splitting. Abstract

We propose a novel bootstrap procedure for conducting inference for factor model-based average treatment effects estimators. Our method overcomes bias inherent to existing bootstrap procedures and substantially improves upon existing large sample normal inference theory in small sample settings. The finite sample improvements arising from the use of our proposed procedure are illustrated via a set of Monte Carlo simulations, and formal justification for the procedure is outlined. 34. New structures on embedded contact homology and applications to low-dimensional topology

Abstract

Embedded contact homology (ECH) is a powerful three-manifold invariant that encodes information about the underlying contact manifold. It has been shown that embedded contact homology is isomorphic to certain versions of Seiberg-Witten Floer homology and Heegaard Floer homology. This thesis highlights the relations of ECH to other three-dimensional Floer theories. In Chapter 2, we use ideas from periodic Floer homology, a cousin of ECH, and techniques from pseudo-Anosov maps to answer a knot detection question in knot Floer homology. This is joint work with Ethan Farber and Braeden Reinoso. In Chapter 3, we show a connected sum formula for ECH by studying pseudo-holomorphic curves in the symplectization of the contact connected sum, without going through the tremendous isomorphisms to Seiberg-Witten Floer homology or Heegaard Floer homology. Our chain level description of the connected sum complex is useful for studying studying similar formulas for other contact homologies and ECH spectral invariants in the future. In Chapter 3, we give a relative version of ECH for contact three-manifolds with convex sutured boundaries. This generalizes both sutured ECH and Lipshitz's cylindrical reformulation of Heegaard Floer homology, and provides a potential framework for bordered ECH. 43. Accelerating Wireless Federated Learning via Nesterov’s Momentum and Distributed Principal Component Analysis

Abstract

A wireless federated learning system is investigated by allowing a server and multiple workers to exchange uncoded information via orthogonal wireless channels. Since the workers frequently upload local gradients to the server via band-limited channels, the uplink transmission from the workers to the server becomes a communication bottleneck. Therefore, a one-shot distributed principal component analysis (PCA) is leveraged to reduce the dimension of uploaded gradients to relieve the communication bottleneck. A PCA-based wireless federated learning (PCA-WFL) algorithm and its accelerated version (i.e., PCA-AWFL) are proposed based on the low-dimensional gradients and the Nesterov’s momentum. For the non-convex empirical risk, a finite-time analysis is performed to quantify the impacts of system hyper-parameters on the convergence of the PCA-WFL and PCA-AWFL algorithms. The PCA-AWFL algorithm is theoretically certified to converge faster than the PCA-WFL algorithm. Besides, the convergence rates of PCA-WFL and PCA-AWFL algorithms quantitatively reveal the linear speedup with respect to the number of workers over the vanilla gradient descent algorithm. Numerical results are used to demonstrate the improved convergence rates of the proposed PCA-WFL and PCA-AWFL algorithms over the benchmarks.

Abstract

Recently, self-supervised vision transformers have attracted unprecedented attention for their impressive representation learning ability. However, the dominant method, contrastive learning, mainly relies on an instance discrimination pretext task, which learns a global understanding of the image. This paper incorporates local feature learning into self-supervised vision transformers via Reconstructive Pre-training (RePre). Our RePre extends contrastive frameworks by adding a branch for reconstructing raw image pixels in parallel with the existing contrastive objective. RePre equips with a lightweight convolution-based decoder that fuses the multi-hierarchy features from the transformer encoder. The multi-hierarchy features provide rich supervisions from low to high semantic information, crucial for our RePre. Our RePre brings decent improvements on various contrastive frameworks with different vision transformer architectures. Transfer performance in downstream tasks outperforms supervised pre-training and state-of-the-art (SOTA) self-supervised counterparts.

Abstract

The incidence of cholestatic liver disease (CLD), which is primarily marked by abnormal bile acids (BAs) metabolism and can result in significant hepatic injury, is rising. Nevertheless, there remains a lack of effective treatments and drugs in clinical practice. Silphium perfoliatum L. (SP) is rich in various structural types of caffeoylquinic acid (CQA) compounds, and it is a traditional herb of North American Indians with hepatobiliary therapy effects. However, its therapeutic effect and mechanism of action on CLD have never been studied. To determine if SP-8, an extract rich in CQAs from SP, protects against cholestatic liver injury induced by alpha-naphthylisothiocyanate (ANIT) and to clarify its mechanism based on the farnesoid x receptor (FXR) signaling pathway and enterohepatic circulation of BAs. The therapeutic efficacy of SP-8 was evaluated by assessing the serum biochemical indices, inflammatory factors, and liver histopathology. Targeted metabolomics of the BAs was studied in the feces, liver, serum, and bile using UPLC-MS/MS. Additionally, a Western blot analysis was used to examine the expression levels of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ), the FXR, and proteins related to the synthesis and transport of BAs. 16S rRNA gene sequencing was performed to evaluate the gut microbiota (GM). Finally, molecular docking simulations were conducted to assess the interaction between seven types of CQAs from SP-8 with FXR and PPARγ. SP-8 significantly enhanced the health status of cholestatic mice induced by ANIT as evidenced by a notable reduction in the liver function indices and pro-inflammatory factors, restoration of liver pathological damage, and acceleration of BAs excretion through the feces. In addition, the levels of harmful secondary BAs in the liver and blood were significantly reduced by SP-8. Furthermore, the results of the study on the mechanism of action confirmed that SP-8 not only regulated FXR and PPARγ but also significantly ameliorated the GM structure, thereby promoting the enterohepatic circulation of BAs and achieving the homeostasis of the BAs in the blood and liver. In addition, SP-8 successfully reduced the inflammatory response by strongly suppressing the nuclear translocation of NF-κBp65. According to the molecular docking results, the extract's primary active ingredients could be the seven CQAs in SP-8, as they exhibited a strong affinity for both FXR and PPARγ. Finally, the Mantel test analysis revealed a significant correlation among cholestatic-associated parameters, the GM, and BAs. It was confirmed for the first time that the SP-8 extract of Silphium perfoliatum L. that is rich in seven CQAs had a strong therapeutic effect on ANIT-induced CLD. Its mechanism may involve the regulation of the FXR signaling pathway and the amelioration of the GM structure to promote the homeostasis of BAs enterohepatic circulation. This study provides a potential candidate medicinal herb and its components for the development of CLD therapeutic drugs. Abstract

[Display omitted] • First identification of alkaloids composition of NRK fruit. • First evaluation of sucrase and maltase inhibitory effects in vivo and in vitro. • Identification of one new β -carboline alkaloid and five new cyclic peptides. Nitraria roborowskii Kom (NRK), with high economic and ecological value, is mainly distributed in the Qaidam Basin, China. However, research on its chemical components and bioactivities is still rare. In this study, its chemical constituents (52) including 10 β -carboline alkaloids, nine cyclic peptides, three indole alkaloids, five pyrrole alkaloids, eight phenolic acids and 17 flavonoids were identified tentatively using UPLC-triple-TOF-MS/MS. Notablely, one new β -carboline alkaloid and five new cyclic peptides were confirmed using MS/MS fragmentation pathways. In addition, experiments in vitro indicated that NRK-C had strong maltase and sucrase inhibitory activities (IC 50 of 0.202 and 0.103 mg/mL, respectively). Polysaccharide tolerance experiments confirmed NRK-C (400 mg/kg) was associated with decreased postprandial blood glucose (PBG) in diabetic mice.
