This study compared the physical properties and mechanical strength development of PCBAs with water, sealed, standard, and open ambient air curing over 28 days to find a suitable curing method for the production of phosphogypsum-based cold-bonded aggregates. The types and relative amounts of hydration products, microstructural morphology and pore structure parameters were characterized utilizing XRD, TGA, FTIR, SEM and nitrogen adsorption methods. According to the results, water curing leads to rapid increases in single aggregate strength, reaching 5.26 MPa at 7 d. The standard curing condition improved the 28 d mechanical strength of the aggregates by 19.3% over others by promoting the generation of hydration products and the transformation of the C-S-H gel to a higher degree of polymerization and by optimizing the pore structure. Further, PCBAs achieved an excellent solidification of phosphorus impurities under all four curing conditions. The Wildlife Services—National Wildlife Research Center Mississippi Field Station, working in conjunction with Mississippi State University, conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of several non-lethal, commercial, physical bird deterrents. Deterrents were available on the open market to reduce double-crested cormorant (Nannopterum auritus) (DCCO) roosting time on floating oyster cages. We hypothesized that reducing bird loafing time on floating oyster cages would reduce the potential for bird defecation. Double-crested cormorant defecation can increase coliform counts in both the water and oysters, which could result in oyster farm closure. Shellfish farms often differ from one another due to environmental factors and farm locations. Six deterrent devices were selected as options for farmers, and the amount of time DCCOs occupied floats with deterrents was compared to the time they occupied those without deterrents (i.e., on a control pond). All deterrents except the Scarem Kite significantly reduced or halted DCCO use of floats compared to the control. Of note, the Scarem Kite is the only deterrent that requires consistent wind to operate effectively. The research facility is open-air, but we did not have sufficient wind for proper Scarem Kite function. Thus, it is possible that all deterrents would have produced significant reductions in DCCO use. Our results are encouraging and show that minimal deterrent applications to oyster cage floats can help farms achieve their operational plans' goals and reduce the potential for pathogen transfer by birds. Brown Pelican Pelecanus occidentalis populations are recovering in many parts of their geographical range in coastal areas of North and Central America following near‐decimation in the mid‐20th century. However, populations have exhibited varying recovery rates that could be rectified with improved understanding of influencing factors, including population stressors, particularly during the non‐breeding period. Brown Pelicans are central‐place foragers and sensitive to changes in surface fish distributions that may result from stochastic events such as the El Niño Southern Oscillation. We used 34 years of Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC) data (1984–2017) to evaluate long‐term density‐dependent and density‐independent population dynamics of Brown Pelican populations in coastal areas of Alabama, California, Louisiana and Mississippi. We used exploratory dynamic factor analysis across four population time series to model a linear combination of common trends from CBC data. We then developed a suite of state space models to assess effects of density‐dependent and density‐independent factors (e.g. Southern Oscillation Index) on Pelican populations dynamics over time. Generally, Brown Pelican populations increased substantially following recovery efforts in the mid‐1980s, but have stabilized and fluctuated over time, represented by three latent trends. Populations generally were subject to density‐dependent regulatory mechanisms, with only the Louisiana population exhibiting a significant negative association with the fall/winter Southern Oscillation Index from 2 years earlier. Improved understanding of underlying regulatory mechanisms driving or hindering Brown Pelican population recovery may help in targeting regional or sub‐regional conservation measures, particularly during lesser‐known periods of their annual cycle. UVA is the most common type of solar UV radiation in aquatic environments; however, the effects it causes in shrimp farming in recirculating water systems (RAS) is unclear. Thus, the growth performance, immune responses, antioxidant status and apoptosis-related gene expression in Pacific white shrimp, Penaeus vannamei (body weight 9.56 ± 0.10 g), reared with 12L: 12D full spectrum light as background light under five UVA (peak at 400 nm) photoperiods (0L: 24D, 2L: 22D, 4L: 20D, 8L: 16D and 12L: 12D) at a light intensity of 1 W/m2 were investigated. The results showed that the 2L: 22D and 4L: 20D UVA photoperiods enhanced the growth performance and reduced the feed conversion ratio and the shrimp mortality. Shrimp exposed to UVA (2L: 22D and 4L: 20D) also displayed higher levels of hepatopancreas catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), acid phosphatase (ACP), phenol oxidase (PO) and lysozyme (LZM) compared to the 8L: 16D and 12L: 12D groups. The malondialdehyde (MDA) levels increased in line with the extension of the UVA irradiation time. The mRNA expression of apoptosis-related genes in all the UVA treatments were significantly higher than with the control treatment, except for the 2L: 22D group. The results of the 2L: 22D and 4L: 20D treatments were significantly higher than those of the control group, except for LGBP. In conclusion, 2L: 22D and 4L: 20D UVA photoperiods increased growth performance and decreased FCR, improved the innate immunity and antioxidant response and reduced the mortality rate in adult shrimp.
