AlGaN multiple-quantum-well diode-based solar-blind ultraviolet emission-detection monolithic integration system shows great application value due to its advantages of multifunctionality, secure communication, and anti-interference ability. To reduce the lateral optical propagation loss and improve the emitting light detection efficiency, we have proposed a concentric ring-circle configuration for the system, where the out-ring light-emitting diode is the emitter at 253 and 267 nm, and the inner-circle detector is the receiver. The out-ring light-emitting diode exhibits about twice the injection current at the same bias and slightly higher light output power at the same current due to better current spreading and sidewall light extraction compared to the conventional square–square configuration. Simultaneously, the concentric inner-circle detector maximizes the collection of the emitted light flux. Under the emission-detection mode for the monolithic integration system, compared to the conventional square–square configuration, the concentric ring-circle design presents an improvement in the ratio of emitter injection current to detector output photocurrent and higher output signal amplitude under the same transmission work mode, demonstrating the improved system energy and coupling efficiency. Liver fibrosis is a severe global health problem. However, no effective antifibrotic drugs have been approved. Surf4 is primarily located in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and mediates the transport of secreted proteins from the ER to the Golgi apparatus. Knockout of hepatic Surf4 ( Surf4 LKO ) in mice impairs very-low-density lipoprotein secretion without causing overt liver damage. Here, we found that collagen levels are significantly reduced in the liver of Surf4 LKO mice compared with control Surf4 flox mice, as demonstrated by proteomics, Western blot, and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Therefore, this study aims to investigate whether and how hepatic Surf4 affects liver fibrosis. We observed that CCl 4 -induced liver fibrosis is significantly lower in Surf4 LKO mice than in Surf4 flox mice. Mechanistically, hepatic Surf4 deficiency reduces serum amyloid A1 (SAA1) secretion and hepatic stellate cell (HSC) activation. Surf4 coimmunoprecipitates and colocalizes with SAA1. Lack of hepatic Surf4 significantly reduces SAA1 secretion from hepatocytes, and SAA1 activates cultured human HSCs (LX-2 cells). Conditioned medium (CM) from Surf4-deficient primary hepatocytes activates LX-2 cells to a much lesser extent than CM from Surf4 flox primary hepatocytes, and this reduced effect is restored by the addition of recombinant SAA1 to CM from Surf4-deficient hepatocytes. Knockdown of SAA1 in primary hepatocytes or TLR2 in LX-2 cells significantly reduces LX-2 activation induced by CM from Surf4 flox hepatocytes but not from Surf4 LKO hepatocytes. Furthermore, knockdown of SAA1 significantly ameliorates liver fibrosis in Surf4 flox mice but does not further reduce liver fibrosis in Surf4 LKO mice. We also observe substantial expression of Surf4 and SAA1 in human fibrotic livers. In this work, we propose a highly reflective Ni/Pt/Al p-electrode for AlGaN-based deep ultraviolet (DUV) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with a wavelength of 276 nm. AlGaN-based DUV LEDs with traditional Al-based reflectivity electrodes suffer from device degradation and wall-plug efficiency (WPE) droop due to the Al diffusion during electrode annealing. By inserting a Pt layer between the Ni contact layer and the Al reflective layer, the contact characteristics of the p-electrode can be optimized by blocking the diffusion of the O and Al atoms, maintaining a high reflectivity of over 80% near 280 nm. Compared to the AlGaN-based DUV LEDs with Ni/Au traditional p-electrodes and Ni/Al traditional reflective p-electrodes, the WPE of the LED with a highly reflective Ni/Pt/Al p-electrode is improved by 10.3% and 30.5%, respectively. Besides, compared to the other novel reflective p-electrodes using multiple annealing or evaporation processes reported for the AlGaN-based DUV LEDs, we provide a new, to the best of our knowledge, optimization method for single evaporation and annealing p-type reflective electrodes, featured with a simpler and more convenient process flow.

AlGaN-based solar-blind ultraviolet avalanche detectors have huge potentials in the fields of corona discharge monitoring, biological imaging, etc. Here, we study the impact of the heterojunction polarization-related effects on the AlGaN-based solar-blind ultraviolet avalanche detectors. Our work confirms that the polarization heterojunction is beneficial to reducing avalanche bias and lifting avalanche gain by improving the electric field in the depletion region, while the polarization-induced fixed charges will lead to a redistribution of the electrons, in turn shielding the charges and weakening the electric field enhancement effect. This shielding effect will need external bias to eliminate, and that is why the polarization heterojunction cannot work at relatively low bias but has an enhancement effect at high bias. Controlling the doping level between the hetero-interface can affect the shielding effect. An unintentionally doped polarization heterojunction can effectively reduce the shielding effect, thus reducing the avalanche bias. The conclusions also hold true for the negative polarization regime. We believe our findings can provide some useful insights for the design of the AlGaN-based solar-blind ultraviolet detectors.

Difficulties of in vitro culture and genetic manipulation of Eimeria tenella have hindered the screening of virulence factors in this parasite. In this study, the E. tenella rhoptry protein 30 (EtROP30) was expressed in Toxoplasma gondii (RH∆Ku80-EtROP30), and its effect on the proliferation and virulence of parasites was investigated. The results revealed that the expression of EtROP30 had no impact on the invasion and egress processes. However, the RH∆Ku80-EtROP30 strain formed larger plaques compared to the RH∆Ku80, indicating that the EtROP30 expression promotes T. gondii proliferation. Furthermore, the RH∆Ku80-EtROP30 strain exhibited greater pathogenicity, resulting in earlier mortality and shorter overall survival time compared to RH∆Ku80. These results imply that EtROP30 expression facilitates parasite intracellular proliferation and virulence in mice, suggesting that EtROP30 might be a candidate virulence factor of E. tenella., (© 2023.
