Upper Cretaceous–Miocene alkaline SiO2-undersaturated volcanic rocks in the southern Central European Volcanic Province (CEVP) comprise two distinct rock series: (i) Upper Cretaceous–Eocene (~73–47 Ma) olivine nephelinites, basanitic nephelinites, and nepheline basanites have moderate to high MgO (8–16 wt. %), CaO, Ni, Co, Cr, Nb, and Ba, coupled with low F and SiO2 concentrations. These rocks contain abundant clinopyroxene and variable amounts of olivine macrocrysts as well as nepheline, K-dominated F-poor mica, and hydroxyapatite. Evolved and less common apatite-rich (phonolitic) haüynites/noseanites and haüyne nephelinites (~68–62 Ma) represent differentiated counterparts within this older group, showing higher alkali, Al2O3, P2O5, Nb, Zn, REE, and SO3 concentrations at low MgO (4–6 wt. %), CaO, Ni, Co, and Cr contents. (ii) Oligocene–Miocene (~27–9 Ma) olivine melilitites and melilite-bearing olivine nephelinites are characterized by even higher MgO (10–22 wt. %), CaO, Ni, Co, Cr, Nb, Ba, and high F contents at lower SiO2 concentrations, as reflected by the presence of abundant olivine macrocrysts, melilite, perovskite, Cr-rich spinel, F- and Ba-rich mica, and fluorapatite in addition to clinopyroxene and nepheline. Distinct mineral assemblages, crystallization trends, and various xenocrysts indicate different melt sources, a varying extent of enrichment, retention, and loss of volatiles (including timing of H2O and CO2 saturation), and limited wall rock interaction for the two rock groups. Partly resorbed, Fo-depleted olivine cores in the younger rocks and green-core pyroxenes in the older ones suggest early magma mixing. The nephelinitic–basanitic magmas derived from up to 6% partial melting of amphibole-bearing garnet/spinel lherzolite at or just above the lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary. This source was metasomatized involving hydrous melts or fluids. On the other hand, the melilite-bearing rocks probably originated in the upper asthenosphere by less than 3.5% partial melting of amphibole ± phlogopite-bearing garnet wehrlite, previously generated by subduction-related metasomatism with high CaO/MgO and CO2/(CO2 + H2O) ratios. Infiltration and storage of the metasomatic agents occurred in the former lower lithosphere, following continuous recycling of oceanic crust, comprising the release of Ca, CO2, H2O, further volatiles, and incompatible elements. Both volcanic episodes coincide with topographic uplift, erosion, rifting, and reactivation of lithosphere-scale faults, probably related to phases of strong mechanical coupling between Alpine orogen and European foreland. The first period overlapped with an era of prolonged N-directed intraplate compressional stress due to the Adriatic-Eurasian collision, provoking large-scale deformation, isostatic compensation, erosion, and consequent lithosphere thinning in the future CEVP. The second period is associated with the Oligocene–Miocene main stage of the European Cenozoic Rift System. Onset of volcanism was accompanied by a change in deformation in the Upper Rhine Graben from (W)NW extension to (E)NE extension and transtension by a complex interplay of evasive movements responding to shortening in Alps and Jura. Magma compositions, barely magmatic graben structures, volcanic activity outside rifts, and extensive exhumation suggest that in response to rifting, passive asthenospheric doming also contributed to magmatism by causing strong lithosphere–asthenosphere interaction and providing heat. The Miocene Kaiserstuhl volcanic complex in the Rhine graben rift is known for simultaneously exposing both intrusive and erupted (pyroclastic) calciocarbonatites. This makes Kaiserstuhl a promising candidate for studying the field and genetic relations between intrusive calciocarbonatite and its eruptive equivalent, and the processes enabling eruption of the calciocarbonatite at the surface in particular. Eruptive calciocarbonatites in Kaiserstuhl are represented by carbonatite tuff and lapillistone beds covering a debrite fan on the western flank of the volcano. The debrites are interpreted as lahar (debris flow) and possibly also debris-avalanche deposits. Based on the observed textures, the debris flows were most likely derived by water dilution from debris avalanches resulting from edifice failure, which occurred in the central part of the Kaiserstuhl volcanic complex. The edifice failure ultimately exposed the intrusive system, and the carbonatite pyroclasts (lapilli and ash) were ejected from narrow vents represented by open-framework tuff-breccias aligned along the detachment scarp. Since the Ca-carbonates break down rapidly at high temperatures and low pressures, calciocarbonatites are unlikely to form surface lavas. On the other hand, the presence of the calciocarbonatite pyroclastic deposits suggests that some geological process faster than the high-temperature breakdown of Ca-carbonate may facilitate calciocarbonatite eruption. We suggest that the sudden exposure and decompression of a suprasolidus high-level carbonatite intrusion by edifice collapse may be a suitable scenario enabling calciocarbonatite eruption. The absence of edifice failures on alkaline volcanoes, where carbonatite intrusion is either supposed or exposed, may explain the overall scarcity of erupted calciocarbonatites. Exploration for rare earth element (REE)-deposits hosted in carbonatites and associated rocks is challenging because of the heterogeneous distribution of REE and the variable and often complex mineralogy of such REE mineralisation. The Keishöhe in southwestern Namibia is a subvolcanic intrusion consisting of calcite-carbonatite, dolomite-carbonatite, ankerite-carbonatite dykes, ring dykes and diatremes, and is regarded to be a part of the Kudu lineament carbonatite complexes. Importantly, it exemplifies many of the problems associated with REE exploration -- particularly regarding its heterogeneous REE distribution. It is therefore an excellent site in which to explore the processes related to REE precipitation in detail. Petrography, whole rock geochemistry and microXRF imaging of xenolith-bearing and xenolith-free carbonatites provide insight into the role of silicate xenoliths in the development of a hydrothermal or supergene REE mineralisation in a subvolcanic environment. Xenolith-rich carbonatites are almost barren, whereas xenolith-free carbonatites show REE-contents of up to 10 wt. % total REE (TREE). Therefore, the probability for REE-enrichment in the various Keishöhe carbonatites is significantly higher in the absence of silicate rock xenoliths. The REE mineralisation is dominated by REE-F-carbonates, while monazite is a minor constituent. In contrast to other complexes, where Si assimilation caused REE depletion in the melt during the magmatic stage, this study demonstrates post-magmatic hydrothermal or supergene REE mobilisation and enrichment. REE remobilisation and enrichment is caused by hydrothermal or supergene alteration of silicate xenoliths (Si release) by aqueous fluid(s). In combination with previous studies this study clearly shows that silicate xenoliths have 1) a significant influence on REE-mineralisation in general and 2) may act either positively (precipitation/incorporation) or negatively (mobilisation) on the mineralisation of discrete REE phases depending upon the related syn-magmatic or post-magmatic processes. This work evaluates an exceptionally complex natural laboratory, the Middle Triassic Latemar isolated platform in the northern Italian Dolomite Mountains and explores spatial and temporal gradients in processes and products related to contact metamorphism, dolomitization and dedolomitization of marine limestones. The relation between petrographic change and re‐equilibration of geochemical proxy data is evaluated from the perspective of carbonate‐archive research. Hydrothermal dolomitization of the limestone units is triggered by dykes and associated hydrothermal fluids radiating from the nearby Predazzo Intrusion. Detailed petrography, fluid inclusion analysis, δ13C and δ18O data and 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios shed light on the extreme textural and geochemical complexity. Metamorphic and diagenetic patterns include: (i) peak‐metamorphic and retrograde‐metamorphic phases including three dolomite marbles, two dedolomite marbles, brucite, magnesium silicates and late‐stage meteoric/vadose cement at the contact aureole; (ii) four spatially defined episodes of dolomitization, authigenic quartz, low magnesium calcite and late‐stage meteoric cement at the Latemar isolated platform; and (iii) kilometre‐scale gradients in δ13C values from the contact aureole towards the platform interior. Results shown here are relevant for two reasons: first, the spatial analysis of alteration products ranging from high‐grade metamorphic overprint of marbles at temperatures of 700°C in the contact aureole to moderately altered limestones in the platform interior at temperatures <100°C, allows the observation of processes that commonly occur along vertical (prograde) gradients from shallow burial to metamorphism at depths >20 km. Second, under rock‐buffered conditions, and irrespective of metamorphic to diagenetic fluid−rock interactions, both marbles, and low‐temperature hydrothermal dolomites have conservative marine δ13C and δ18O values. The fact that metamorphism and hydrothermal dolomitization of precursor limestones and early diagenetic dolostones did not per se reset environmental proxy data is of interest for those concerned with carbonate archive research in Earth's deep time.
