1. Discovery of late-time X-ray flare and anomalous emission line enhancement after the nuclear optical outburst in a narrow-line Seyfert 1 Galaxy

Abstract

CSS J102913+404220 is a peculiar narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy with an energetic nuclear optical outburst. We present a detailed analysis of its multi-wavelength photometric and spectroscopic observations covering a period of decade since outburst. We detect mid-infrared (MIR) flares delayed by about two months relative to the optical outburst, with an extremely high peak luminosity of log(L_4.6um)>44 erg/s. The MIR peak luminosity is at least an order of magnitude higher than any known supernovae explosions, suggesting the optical outburst might be due to a stellar tidal disruption event (TDE). We find late-time X-ray brightening by a factor of >30 with respect to what is observed about 100 days after the optical outburst peak, followed by a flux fading by a factor of ~4 within two weeks, making it one of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) with extreme variability. Despite the dramatic X-ray variability, there are no coincident strong flux variations in optical, UV and MIR bands. This unusual variability behavior has been seen in other highly accreting AGNs and could be attributed to absorption variability. In this scenario, the decrease in the covering factor of absorber with accretion rate could cause the X-ray brightening, possibly induced by the TDE. Most strikingly, while the UV/optical continuum remains little changes with time, an evident enhancement in the flux of H_alpha broad emission line is observed, about a decade after the nuclear optical outburst, which is an anomalous behavior never seen in any other AGNs. Such an H_alpha anomaly could be explained by the replenishment of gas clouds and excitation within Broad Line Region (BLR) that originates, perhaps from the interaction of outflowing stellar debris with BLR. Abstract

The long-lived $^{60}$Fe (with a half-life of 2.62 Myr) is a crucial diagnostic of active nucleosynthesis in the Milky Way galaxy and in supernovae near the solar system. The neutron-capture reaction $^{59}$Fe(n,$\gamma$)$^{60}$Fe on $^{59}$Fe (half-life = 44.5 days) is the key reaction for the production of $^{60}$Fe in massive stars. This reaction cross section has been previously constrained by the Coulomb dissociation experiment, which offered partial constraint on the $E$1 $\gamma$-ray strength function but a negligible constraint on the $M$1 and $E$2 components. In this work, for the first time, we use the surrogate ratio method to experimentally determine the $^{59}$Fe(n,$\gamma$)$^{60}$Fe cross sections in which all the components are included. We derived a Maxwellian-averaged cross section of 27.5 $\pm$ 3.5 mb at $kT$= 30 keV and 13.4 $\pm$ 1.7 mb at $kT$= 90 keV, roughly 10 - 20% higher than previous estimates. We analyzed the impact of our new reaction rates in nucleosynthesis models of massive stars and found that uncertainties in the production of $^{60}$Fe from the $^{59}$Fe(n,$\gamma$)$^{60}$Fe rate are at most of 25%. Abstract

We present an experimental demonstration of high conversion efficiency Betatron x-ray radiation from petawatt laser irradiated near critical plasmas. Direct laser acceleration serves as the dominant regime when laser pulse of ~5e20 W/cm2 intensity is focused into plasmas with electron density of 3e20 /cm3. Electron beam with a charge of ~35 nC is accelerated up to a maximum energy of 70 MeV and emit x-rays when oscillating in the laser field. The deduced energy conversion efficiency from laser to x-rays is up to 1e-4, orders of magnitude higher than other betatron regimes. Enhancement of acceleration and radiation with sharp plasma density boundary is also obtained and further interpretated with 2D particle-in-cell simulations., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Utilizing a simplified quantum model approach, the low-energy inelastic collision processes between yttrium atoms (ions) and hydrogen atoms have been studied. Rate coefficients corresponding to the mutual neutralization, ion-pair formation, excitation, and de-excitation processes for the above collision systems have been provided in the temperature range of 1000–10 000 K. Three ionic states and 73 covalent states are considered in calculations for the collisions of yttrium atoms with hydrogen atoms, which include six molecular symmetries and 4074 partial inelastic reaction processes. For the collisions of yttrium ions with hydrogen atoms, one ionic state and 116 covalent states are included, which are related to three molecular symmetries and 13 572 partial inelastic collision processes. It is found that the rate coefficients for the mutual neutralization process have a maximum at T = 6000 K, which is an order of magnitude higher than those of other processes. Notably, the positions of optimal windows for the collisions of yttrium atoms and ions with hydrogen atoms are found near electronic binding energy −2 eV (Y) and −4.4 eV (Y+), respectively. The scattering channels located in or near these optimal windows have intermediate-to-large rate coefficients (greater than 10−12 cm3 s−1). 18. Crystallization mechanism of the Pt50Au50 alloy with grain boundary segregation during the solidification process.

Abstract

The crystalline mechanism of the Pt50Au50 alloy with grain boundary (GB) segregation during the rapid solidification process is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. The cluster evolution and phase transformation processes during the GB segregation are analyzed by means of the energy temperature (E–T) curve, the pair distribution function (g(r)) curves, common neighborhood analysis (CNA), cluster-type index method (CTIM) and three-dimensional visualizing analyses. It is found that the GB segregation phenomenon of the Pt50Au50 alloy comes from various solidification temperatures of Pt- and Au-centered clusters. Four critical temperatures T1 (1153 K), T2 (1073 K), T3 (853 K) and T4 (753 K) are discovered during the liquid–solid transition, corresponding to the supercooled liquid, Pt-centered atom nucleation, Pt-centered cluster growth, Au-centered atom nucleation and grain growth process, respectively, which is observably different to the solidification process of other alloys. The Pt atoms begin to gather together in the high-temperature liquid before the liquid–solid transition. Abstract

To clarify the effects of straw return and biochar application on the amelioration of soils with different salinity levels and cotton growth, in this soil column simulation test, straw and biochar were applied to soils with different salinity levels (1.5 (S1), 5 (S2) and 10 (S3) g/kg), with application rates equal to the same amount of carbon (two carbon levels: 6 t/hm² of straw (C1) = 2.25 t/hm² of biochar (B1); 12 t/hm² of straw (C2) = 4.5 t/hm² of biochar (B2)). Then, changes in soil physicochemical properties and cotton physiology were determined. The results showed that straw return and biochar application reduced soil salinity at S1, S2, and S3 levels. Besides, both of them increased soil water, total nitrogen, organic matter, available phosphorus, and available potassium contents, but there was no difference between S3 soil and S1 soil and between S3 soil and S2 soil (p > 0.05). Straw return and biochar application also increased chlorophyll and soluble sugar contents in cotton leaves (p < 0.05), and decreased the relative conductivity and malondialdehyde content in S1 and S2 soils (p < 0.05). However, in S3 soil, there was no difference between C1 treatments and CK and between B1 treatments and CK (p > 0.05). Thus, straw return and biochar application can improve the physicochemical properties of saline soil and regulate osmolytes in cotton, but the amelioration effect of low application rates on high-salinity soils is insignificant (p > 0.05). Abstract

The nature of two high-spin bands in 136Nd built on the two-quasiparticle configuration πh211/2, predicted by the triaxial projected shell model as good candidates of transverse wobbling bands, are investigated experimentally. The mixing ratio of one ΔI=1 transition connecting the one-phonon and the zero-phonon wobbling bands is established from a high-statistics JuroGam II γ-ray spectroscopy experiment by using the combined angular correlation and linear polarization method. The resulting wobbling excitation energy and ratios of reduced electromagnetic transition probabilities are in good agreement with results of a new particle-rotor model which rigidly couples the total angular momentum of two quasiparticles to a triaxial core in an orthogonal geometry, confirming thus the transverse wobbling nature of the bands. peerReviewed

Abstract

Three new negative-parity bands have been identified in 120Ba, two of them forming a strongly coupled band. The previously known negative-parity band is significantly extended to high spin, while the lower part of the yrare positive-parity band has been modified. From the analysis of the band properties and comparison with the neighboring nuclei a coherent description of all bands is achieved. In particular, a simple explanation of the evolution of the positive-parity bands at high spin is proposed, including the possible occupation of the νf7/2[541]1/2− intruder orbital. Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations reveal similar quadrupole deformations but different triaxiality of the bands, while particle number conserving cranked shell model calculations qualitatively reproduce the experimental data and support the assigned configurations. The new measured ratios of reduced transition probabilities B(E1)/B(E2) complete the systematics in the 118–124Ba nuclei, exhibiting a decrease with decreasing neutron number, and are compared with the known values in the 116–120Xe nuclei, which are larger. Extended calculations with the quadrupole and octupole collective Hamiltonian based on the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model employing the relativistic DD-PC1 density functional nicely reproduce the decreasing trend towards lower neutron numbers for Ba and Xe nuclei, as well as the larger values in Xe nuclei, but are much larger in amplitude than the experimental values. On the other hand, particle number conserving cranked shell model calculations without octupole deformation overestimate the low-spin values, while those with octupole deformation included reproduce the experimental values in 120Ba, suggesting the possible existence of moderate octupole collectivity in the negative-parity bands of nuclei in this mass region. peerReviewed

Abstract

The fluid front motion is an important phenomenon during anisotropic fluid flow in rock engineering. The pore pressure and mechanical responses may be significantly influenced and show an obvious difference near the moving fluid front. However, few studies have been conducted to investigate the front motion of different types of fluids during anisotropic fluid flow. In this work, a numerical model was proposed to detect the front motion of water, nitrogen, and CO2 in anisotropic shale reservoirs. The full coupling effects among mechanical deformation, fluid flow, and moving boundary in anisotropic porous media were considered in the model construction. The impacts of different fluid properties among water, nitrogen, and CO2 on the anisotropic fluid flow have been discussed. Then, the proposed model was applied to study the differences in front motion among different types of fluids in anisotropic shales. The impacts of permeability and mobility on fluid front motion were investigated. The theoretical equations for predicting the fluid front motion of different types of fluids were established by introducing corresponding correction coefficients to the previous formulas. The results showed that the model can well describe the anisotropic fluid permeation process. The fluid front motion increased with the increase of permeability and mobility. At the same permeability or mobility, the nitrogen front motion was the largest and the water front motion was the smallest. The difference in fluid front motion among water, nitrogen, and CO2 was caused by the difference of their viscosity and compressibility.
