Application of redox-active polymers (RAPs) in redox flow batteries (RFBs) can potentially reduce the stack cost through substitution of costly ion-exchange membranes by cheap size-exclusion membranes. However, intermolecular interactions of polymer molecules, i.e. , entanglements, particularly in concentrated solutions, result in relatively high electrolyte viscosities. Furthermore, the large size and limited mobility of polymers lead to slow diffusion and more sluggish heterogeneous electron transfer rates compared to quickly diffusing small molecules. Although a number of RAPs with varying electrolyte viscosities have been reported in the literature, the relation between the RAP structure and the hydrodynamic properties has not been thoroughly investigated. Herein, hyperbranched 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyloxyl (TEMPO)-based polymers intended for application as low-viscosity catholytes for RFBs are presented and the influence of the structure and the molar mass distribution on the hydrodynamic properties is investigated. A new synthesis approach for TEMPO-based polymers is established based on step-growth polymerization of a TEMPO-containing monomer using an aza-Michael addition followed by a postpolymerization modification to improve solubility in aqueous solutions. The compact structure of hyperbranched polymers was demonstrated using size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) with viscometric detection and the optimum molar mass was found based on the results of viscometric and crossover investigations. The resulting RAP revealed a viscosity of around 21 mPas at a concentration corresponding to around 1 M TEMPO-containing units, according to the calculated mass of the repeating unit, showing potential for high capacity polymer-based catholytes for RFBs. Nevertheless, possible partial deactivation of TEMPO units lowered the active TEMPO concentration of the hyperbranched RAPs. A faster diffusion and higher charge transfer rate were observed for the hyperbranched polymer compared to the previously reported linear polymers. However, in RFB tests, a poor performance was observed, which is attributed to the side reactions of the oxidized TEMPO moieties. Finally, pathways for overcoming the main remaining challenges, i.e. , high loss of material during dialysis as an indication of being prone to crossover, the partial deactivation of TEMPO moieties, and the subsequent side reactions under battery conditions, are suggested., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Domestic cat (Felis catus) mothers may rely on offspring cries to allocate resources in use of individuals with greater chances for survival and sacrifice the weak ones in case of impossibility to raise the entire large litter. Potential victims of this maternal strategy can enhance their chances of survival, by producing vocalizations with traits mimicking those of higher-quality offspring. We compared acoustic traits of 4990 cries produced during blood sampling by 57 two-week-old captive feral kittens (28 males, 29 females); 47 of them survived to 90 days of age and 10 died by reasons not related to traumas or aggression. No relationship was found between acoustic parameters and kitten survival, however, positive relationship was found between survival and body weight. The cries had moderate cues to individuality and lacked cues to sex. Body weight correlated positively with fundamental frequency and negatively with call rate, duration, peak frequency and power quartiles. We discuss that dishonesty of acoustic traits of kitten quality could develop as adaptation for misleading a mother from allocation resources between the weaker and stronger individuals, thus enhancing individual chances for survival for the weaker littermates. In mammalian cross-species hybrids, parameters of voice calls, produced by vocal fold vibrations, are intermediate between parental species. Inheritance of ultrasonic calls, produced by whistle mechanism, is unstudied for hybrids. We examined 4000 pup ultrasonic isolation-induced calls for peak power of call fundamental frequency and for call duration in 4-8-day-old captive hamsters of four Study Groups: pure Phodopus sungorus; pure P. campbelli of two populations (Mongolian and Kosh-Agach) and hybrids between male P. sungorus and female P. campbelli (Kosh-Agach). All Study Groups produced two categories of ultrasonic calls: Low-Frequency centered around 41 kHz and High-Frequency centered around 60 kHz, but in different percentages. Between populations, only Low-Frequency calls were shorter and higher-frequency in Mongolian P. campbelli. Between species, only High-Frequency calls were shorter and higher-frequency in P. sungorus. In hybrids, Low-Frequency calls were shorter and lower-frequency than in either parental species, whereas High-Frequency calls were longer and lower-frequency in hybrids than in pure P. sungorus but similar with another parental species. Studying pup isolation calls of wild rodents provides background for developing new early-life animal models for biomedical research and drug testing. This study discovered a highly complex acoustic phenotype of pup isolation calls in 4-5-day-old Mongolian hamsters Allocricetulus curtatus . We analyzed the acoustic structure of 5,010 isolation calls emitted in the broad range of frequencies (sonic, below 20 kHz, and ultrasonic, from 20 to 128 kHz) by 23 pups during 2-min isolation test trials, 1 trial per pup. In addition, we measured 5 body size parameters and the body weight of each pup. The calls could contain up to 3 independent fundamental frequencies in their spectra, the low (f0), the medium (g0), and the high (h0), or purely consisted of chaos in which the fundamental frequency could not be tracked. By presence/absence of the 3 fundamental frequencies or their combinations and chaos, we classified calls into 6 distinctive categories (low-frequency [LF]-f0, LF-chaos, high-frequency [HF]-g0, HF-h0, HF-g0 + h0, and HF-chaos) and estimated the relative abundance of calls in each category. Between categories, we compared acoustic parameters and estimated their relationship with pup body size index. We discuss the results of this study with data on the acoustics of pup isolation calls reported for other species of rodents. We conclude that such high complexity of Mongolian hamster pup isolation calls is unusual for rodents. Aqueous-organic redox flow batteries (RFBs) have gained considerable interest in recent years, given their potential for an economically viable energy storage at large scale. This, however, strongly depends on both the robustness of the underlying electrolyte chemistry against molecular decomposition reactions as well as the device's operation. With regard to this, the presented study focuses on the use of in situ IR spectroscopy in combination with a multivariate curve resolution approach to gain insight into both the molecular structures of the active materials present within the electrolyte as well as crucial electrolyte state parameters, represented by the electrolyte's state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH). To demonstrate the general applicability of the approach, methyl viologen (MV) and bis(3-trimethylammonium)propyl viologen (BTMAPV) are chosen, as viologens are frequently used as negolytes in aqueous-organic RFBs. The study's findings highlight the impact of in situ spectroscopy and spectral deconvolution tools on the precision of the obtainable SOC and SOH values. Acoustic individuality is present in diverse taxa of mammals and birds, becoming especially prominent in those age groups for which discriminating conspecifics by voice is critically important. This study compares, for the first time, the ontogenetic changes of acoustic individuality of ultrasonic and audible calls (USVs and AUDs) across 12 age-classes (from neonates to adults) in captive yellow steppe lemmings Eolagurus luteus. We found that, in this rodent species, the isolation-induced USVs and AUDs are not individually distinct at any age. We discuss that this result is unusual, because discriminating individuals by individualistic vocal traits may be important for such a social species as yellow steppe lemming.
