ABSTRACTInternal checking is a wood-drying defect that affects many tree species, including eucalypts, and can adversely affect the recovery of high-quality timber. We studied the patterns of within- and between-tree variation in wood checking from three Eucalyptus nitenssilvicultural trials and determined the predictability of wood checking from wood properties. We hypothesised that changed wind exposure and inter-tree competition due to thinning would increase wood checking. In total, 144 trees from two silvicultural treatments (thinned/unthinned) and three social status classes per site (dominant/subdominant/suppressed) were sampled. Regardless of site, social status and silvicultural treatment, longitudinal and radial variation within trees was the major source of variation in checking. Checking was concentrated longitudinally in bottom logs and radially in the middle of wedges, with a shift in checking towards the cambium in the thinned treatment. On average, dominant trees in the thinned treatment had higher levels of checking than dominant trees in unthinned treatments at all sites, but the opposite trend was found for suppressed trees. Wedge checking was poorly predicted using non-destructive traits assessed on standing trees. Our models accounted for at most 22% of the variation in wedge checking and the best predictors were the destructive measures of wedge collapse. With most checking occurring in lower logs, future studies should concentrate on reducing checking in bottom logs, which are typically pruned for clearwood products.

The circulating form of human endoglin (sEng) is a cleavage product of membrane-bound endoglin present on endothelial cells. Because sEng encompasses an RGD motif involved in integrin binding, we hypothesized that sEng would be able to bind integrin αIIbβ3, thereby compromising platelet binding to fibrinogen and thrombus stability.

La détection du cancer de prostate (CaP) a été révolutionnée par l’avènement de l’imagerie par rayonnance magnétique (IRM) multiparamétrique et des biopsies prostatiques ciblées. Certains auteurs prônent alors l’abandon des biopsies randomisées. Les critères secondaires anatomopathologiques comme l’engainement péri-nerveux (EPN), déjà controversés, ont encore perdu de l’importance. L’objectif était d’évaluer l’impact de l’EPN sur biopsies avec fusion échographie-IRM, sur les résultats opératoires et notamment sur le risque d’extension extra-capsulaire (EEC), pour le CaP de risque faible ou intermédiaire. Les dossiers des patients ayant eu des biopsies avec fusion Échographie-IRM, puis une prostatectomie Totale ont été étudiés, de manière monocentrique et rétrospective sur six ans. Les patients étaient classés en deux groupes selon la présence ou non d’EPN sur les biopsies. Le critère de jugement principal était l’association entre l’EPN sur BP et l’EEC sur pièce de prostatectomie. 187 patients ont été inclus, 93 présentaient un EPN sur les biopsies. Il n’y avait pas de différence significative sur les caractéristiques de base des deux groupes. Avec 42 % de maladie extra-prostatique (pT3), l’EPN était associé à une augmentation du risque d’EEC en analyse univariée et multivariée. La présence de l’EPN sur les biopsies randomisées uniquement semblait même mieux prédire le risque d’EEC en analyse univariée. À l’ère de l’IRM et des biopsies ciblées, l’étude des caractéristiques anatomopathologiques secondaires des biopsies, comme l’EPN, semble garder un intérêt pour mieux prédire le stade tumoral sur prostatectomie, afin de proposer aux patients une prise en charge adaptée.

Los estudios del tracto digestivo con control fluoroscópico cada vez se practican con menos frecuencia debido a la introducción de otras técnicas de imagen como la tomografía computarizada o la resonancia magnética y la mayor accesibilidad a la endoscopia. No obstante, continúan apareciendo en muchas guías de práctica clínica y siguen teniendo indicaciones vigentes. Son exploraciones dinámicas y dependientes del operador, que requieren de un entrenamiento para obtener la máxima rentabilidad. Esta revisión pretende repasar la técnica y actualizar las indicaciones de esta modalidad de imagen.

After confinement by COVID-19, interest has arisen to study its effect on the population. This study aimed to describe the impact of changes in physical activity during the COVID-19 pandemic on the progression of MAFLD.

The Mediterranean diet has been proposed as an effective option in the initial treatment of these patients. The Regional diet is based on traditional Mexican food, favoring the consumption of fiber and antioxidants. This study aimed to compare the Mediterranean diet (MD) versus the regional diet (RD) in patients with MAFLD in a three-month cohort.
