Inflorescences terminal or lateral, auxotelic, racemiform, with two pairs of flowers and late vegetative proliferation, puberulent; bracts 2–20 × 2–9.5 mm, oblanceolate to narrowly oblanceolate, puberulent; trichomes brownish; persistent after anthesis; flowers with pedicels 16–35 × 0.5 mm, flattened, pilose; trichomes brownish; bracteoles ca. 6 × 1 mm, linear, deciduous at or after anthesis; ciliate, trichomes brownish to whitish. Flower buds 3–3.5 mm in diam., orbiculate to obovoid. Flowers with smooth, puberulent or pilose hypanthia; trichomes brownish to whitish; calyx lobes 4, free, of two equal pairs, 5.5–7 × 3–4.8 mm, ovate or oblong, apices acute or obtuse, puberulent on both surfaces; trichomes brownish, oil glands markedly evident; petals 4, 8–16 × 6–8 mm, obovate, glabrate and glabrescent on both surfaces, oil glands inconspicuous; trichomes brownish; staminal ring ca. 2 mm, rounded, puberulent to glabrous; stamens with filaments 10–13.5 mm, anthers 0.5–1 mm, oblong or globose, longitudinally dehiscent; style 8.5–12 mm, glabrous, stigma punctiform; ovary 2-locular, ovules not counted, locule internally glabrous. Fruits 11–13.5 × 9.5–11.5 mm, globose or oblate, smooth, glabrous, dark purple when ripe; seeds 1–3 per fruit, ellipsoid or globose, testa smooth, cotyledons fused with visible hypocotyl. Distribution and Habitat: —The new species has been recorded in the Ombrophilous Forest of the Atlantic Forest Domain in the municipalities of Caraguatatuba and Ubatuba, S„o Paulo state, Brazil (Figure 3). Phenology: —Flowering specimens were collected from September to January, and fruiting from November to February. Preliminary conservation status: — Eugenia aeterna is known from 13 gatherings in five localities within protected areas—Serra do Mar State Park. The species has an Extent of Occurrence (EOO) of ca. 176 km ² and an Area of Occupancy (AOO) of 16 km ², falling within the thresholds of the Endangered category, under the criterion B. However, Eugenia aeterna occurs only in well protected areas, and it is assumed that is not under any major threats or continuing decline. Therefore, Eugenia aeterna is classified here as Least Concern (LC), as does not meet all required criteria. Etymology: —The epithet refers to the long-lasting cataphylls, being persistent until mature twigs. Affinities: —This species had been identified as Eugenia plicata as recorded in several Brazilian herbaria. However, careful examination of the type in P revealed that Eugenia plicata is best circumscribed as Eugenia acutata Miquel (1849: 535) which has priority (see Giaretta et al. 2021). Thus, Eugenia aeterna is newly described here. The species is assigned to Eugenia sect. Eugenia based on its cataphylls subtending new twigs and racemose inflorescences with late vegetative proliferation. It is a quite distinct species, especially by its persistent cataphylls. See the generic key (specifically group F) presented in Flora do Brasil 2020 (Mazine et al. 2020) to distinguish the new species (erroneously named as E. plicata in that occasion) from other Eugenia sect. Eugenia species. Valdemarin et al. (2022) also presented a key to Eugenia sect. Eugenia in S„o Paulo state, Brazil. Additionally, it is worth noting that Eugenia aeterna is the entity treated by Valdemarin et al. (2022) as Eugenia aff. plicata. Paratypes: — BRAZIL. 8. * Eugenia balancanensis Lundell, Phytologia 1: 481 (1941) EOO: 4 km ². AOO: 4 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Critically Endangered. Eugenia balancanensis is known only from the type locality in Tabasco, specifically in the municipality of Balancán. The biome of occurrence is the Humid tropical forest. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) fall within the thresholds of Critically Endangered category under the criterion B. The region where the specimen was found is 15 km from the conservation area known as the “Flora and Fauna Protection Area Cañón del Usumacinta” (CONANP 2015a). There is only one known location and an inferred continuing decline of habitat due to the high anthropic impact in Balancán, mainly caused by deforestation related to agricultural activities, which has affected about half of the tropical forests area (CONABIO 2018). Therefore, Eugenia balancanensis is classified as Critically Endangered (CR) as it meets the criteria B 2ab (iii). Specimen examined:— MEXICO. 53. * Eugenia pleurocarpa Standley, Publ. Field Columb. Mus., Bot. Ser. 4: 243 (1929) EOO: 124,027.522 km ². AOO: 44 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Near Threatened. Eugenia pleurocarpa is distributed along the Mexican Pacific coast mainly in the states of Nayarit, Jalisco, and Guerrero, but also with a record in central Mexico. Eleven collection records are known in Mexico. The occurrence biome is the Dry Tropical Forest and the Humid Montane Forest from 300 to 1,000 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) exceeds the thresholds for a threatened category under the criteria B. Potentially its area of occupancy (AOO) based on the habitat available also exceeds the thresholds of Endangered category, but currently there are only up to 10 known locations, and all of them have ongoing threats. The species’ habitat is impacted by the development of tourism and agricultural activity in the case of the Guerrero state, but in other locations the rate of ecological degradation is very low, since specimens were collected in the “El Tepozteco National Park”, in Hidalgo (CONABIO 2018, DOF 1937). Therefore, Eugenia pleurocarpa is classified here as Near Threatened (NT) due to the low number of locations and the continuing decline of habitat quality. Further field surveys and information on habitat trend is needed to confirm if its area of occupancy does not exceed the thresholds of a threatened category. Specimens examined:— MEXICO. 47. * Eugenia nigrita Lundell, Wrightia 3: 16 (1961b) EOO: 11,455.625 km ². AOO: 20 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Near Threatened. Eugenia nigrita has a restricted distribution only in the state of Chiapas, with seven collection records. The species occurs in the Humid Tropical Forest and Humid Montane Forest biomes, from 226 to 2926 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) falls within the thresholds of Vulnerable category, whilst the estimated area of occupancy falls within the thresholds of Endangered category under the criterion B. However, it would probably exceed the thresholds of this category if the remaining habitat available is taken in account. There are only up to five known locations and all of them have ongoing threats. The habitat is in a good state of conservation since it occurs in two ecological protection reserves relevant to the conservation and scientific study of Mexican biodiversity such as the “Reserva de la Biosfera La Sepultura”, and the “Reserva de la Biosfera Montes Azules” (CONABIO 2018, INE-SEMARNAP 1999c, INE-SEMARNAP 2000a). However, since there is not available information to infer a continuing decline or extreme fluctuation, and its status is dependent of protect areas, Eugenia nigrita is classified here as Near Threatened (NT), as it meets the criteria B 1a+ B 2a. It is worth mentioning that the last collection was made in 1999, therefore, efforts for new collections and information on threats and habitat trends must be made to confirm its status. Specimen examined:— MEXICO. Chiapas: Breedlove & Thorne 21107 (MEXU!)., Published as part of Uc Gala, Victor C., Valdemarin, Karinne Sampaio, Lucas, Eve, Negrão, Raquel & Mazine, Fiorella F., 2023, Eugenia (Myrtaceae) from Mexico: checklist, distribution, and conservation assessments, pp. 99-140 in Phytotaxa 583 (2) on pages 117-118, DOI: 10.11646/phytotaxa.583.2.1, http://zenodo.org/record/7609258, {"references":["CONABIO (2018) Indice de degradacion ecologica (IDE) por municipios, escala: 1: 250000. 1 ed. 27. Eugenia galalonensis (C.Wright ex Grisebach) Krug & Urban, Bot. Jahrb. Syst. 19: 641 (1895) Basionym: Eugenia disticha var. galalonensis C. Wright ex Grisebach (1866: 88). = Eugenia argyrea Lundell, Wrightia 3: 10 (1961b). EOO: 1,333,145.589 km ². AOO: 468 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Least Concern. Eugenia galalonensis has a wide distribution in the American continent, ranging from Florida (USA) to Colombia, even occurring in Cuba (WCSP 2020). In the Mexican territory the species is known in the biomes of Humid, Dry Tropical Forests and in the Humid Montane Forest, as well as in mangrove and swamp areas, from 0 to 1,400 m elev. Nine collection records were found for the country, located in reserves such as the “Calakmul Biosphere Reserve” in Campeche, and close to the “El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve”, Selva El Ocote Biosphere Reserve and “Reserva de la Biosphere” La Sepultura Biosphere, in Chiapas and the Pantanos de Centla Biosphere Reserve, in Tabasco (INESEMARNAP 1999a, INE-SEMARNAP 1999b, CONANP 2001, INE-SEMARNAP 2000b). The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) exceeds the thresholds for a threatened category under the criterion B. The area of occupancy (AOO) would likely exceed the thresholds of any threatened category when the remaining habitat available is taken in account, due to unbalanced surveys in the entire range. Regarding the occurrence within protected lands, the habitat of this species remains in good condition (CONABIO 2018), so Eugenia galalonensis is classified as Least Concern (LC). Specimens examined:— MEXICO. Campeche: Martínez 28636 (MO); Chiapas: Breedlove & Thorne 21014 (MEXU!); Oaxaca: Calderón 218 (MEXU!); Tabasco: Ventura A. 20050 (MEXU!). 49. Eugenia octopleura Krug & Urban, Bot. Jahrb. Syst. 19: 653 (1895) EOO: 1,448,833.845 km ². AOO: 72 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Least Concern. Eugenia octopleura has a wide distribution that ranges from the Gulf and Southeast Mexico region, Central America, to Venezuela, including the Antilles (WCSP 2020). The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and the area of occupancy (AOO) based on the potential habitat available exceed the thresholds for a threatened category under the criterion B. There are more than 10 known locations based on 22 collections, from Mexico to Venezuela. Four records were found for Mexico, with three records in Chiapas and one in Hidalgo but on the continent. This species is one of the most well distributed Eugenia species. The species occurs mainly in the Humid Tropical Forest and the Humid Montane Forest from 226 to 2,070 m elev. The habitat is in a good state of conservation; in the areas of tropical occurrence, in two biodiversity conservation areas in Chiapas which are the “Monumento Natural Bonampak” and the “Monumento Natural Yaxchilán” with a humid tropical forest that is part of the “Mesoamerican Biological Corridor”. This corridor connects Mexican biological reserves with those of Central America, contributing to the continuity of biological interactions of species that occur in this region (CONABIO 2018, CCAD 1992, Corrales & Zuñiga 2001, Vázquez et al. 2011). 7. Eugenia bajaverapazana Lundell, Wrightia 5: 166 (1975) EOO: 8 km ². AOO: 8 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Least Concern. Eugenia bajaverapazana is known for Mexico, but also occurs in Guatemala (WCSP 2020). There is only one record in Mexico, collected in the state of Chiapas in the humid montane forest that is part of the “Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve” and in Guatemala it is known with a collection in the department of Baja Verapaz in the Biotopo El Quetzal conservation area (INE-SEMARNAP 2000a, CECON/USAC 2016). The habitat is considered well preserved, having a low rate of degradation according to CONABIO (2018). In addition, the area is known for its enormous biodiversity (Breedlove 1981, 1986, Castillo-Campos & Navare 1992, Martinez 1994, Levy-Tacher et al. 2006). The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) fall within the thresholds of Critically Endangered category under the criterion B. However, Eugenia bajaverapazana occurs only in well protected area, and it is assumed that is not under any major threats or continuing decline. 72. Eugenia tikalana Lundell, Wrightia 2: 210 (1961a) EOO: 155,110.419 km ². AOO: 276 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Least Concern. Eugenia tikalana occurs from southeastern Mexico to Guatemala and Belize (Barrie 2020, WCSP 2020). One hundred and eighteen collection records are known, including the Yucatan Peninsula, which covers the southeast of Mexico with the states of Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo, but it also has influence in Belize and a part of the territory that belongs to Guatemala. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) exceeds the thresholds for a threatened category under the criterion B, as well as the area of occupancy (AOO) would probably exceed the thresholds for any threatened category if the remaining habitat available is taken in account. The occurrence biome is the Humid Tropical Forest, the species being an element of primary and secondary forests, from 13 to 950 m elev. Important collections have been recorded in biodiversity conservation areas in Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize, such as Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, the Maya Biosphere Reserve, the Sierra Lacandon National Park, and the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. Therefore, Eugenia tikalana is classified here as Least Concern (LC) (BGCI & IUCN 2019i). Specimens examined:— MEXICO. 48. * Eugenia oaxacana O.Berg, Linnaea 30: 683 (1861) EOO: 4 km ². AOO: 4 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Critically Endangered. Eugenia oaxacana has a very restricted distribution, known for only two records in the municipality of San Felipe Usila, belonging to the state of Oaxaca in southeastern Mexico. This species occurs in higher areas of the Humid Montane Forest. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) fall within the thresholds of the Critically Endangered category under the criterion B. There is only one known location. The habitat of the species is under potential threats that produce the deterioration of the surface and quality of the habitat, due to the change of land use, agrarian conflicts for land tenure, small-scale agriculture, and livestock, as well as renewable energy projects. Despite many studies and analysis of the biological wealth of the Chinantla region, there are no actions for the implementation of the creation of protected natural areas. The region is well collected due to its high biodiversity of species (Rzedowski 1978, 1991, McVaugh 1963, Toledo 1988, Lorence & Mendoza 1989, Villaseñor & Ortiz 2014, Villaseñor 2016, Meave et al. 2017). Eugenia oaxacana is known only from specimens within the type locality, the last date of collection of the species is from 1842, and there are threats in the area and is classified here as Critically Endangered (CR), as it meets the criteria B 1ab(iii)+ B 2ab(iii). To confirm if this species could be also tagged as “Possibly Extinct” the documentation must summarize the lines of evidence for and against extinction (including population size, local threats, and habitat trends), describing the surveys carried out to search for the species and specifying the date and relevant details of the last confirmed record (IUCN 2020). 77. * Eugenia turneri McVaugh, Fieldiana, Bot. 29: 460 (1963) EOO: 4 km ². AOO: 4 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Critically Endangered. Eugenia turneri is known only from the type collection, made in 1950, at 1,521m elev., from the municipality of Coalcoman, state of Michoacán. The occurrence biome is the Humid Montane Forest of the Sierra de Coalcoman. Although the region is considered as presenting a good state of conservation since there are large areas of vegetation, from the satellite images (Google Earth—https://www.google.com.br/earth/) it is possible to observe areas with exposed soil due to deforestation, understory cleaning or burning, near to the locality where this species was collected. There are areas of crop production on small scale, but the region is known by a high level of flora endemism. There are intentions to transform the region of Rio Balsas into an area protected by the environmental services (CONABIO 2018, Brand 1960). However, currently there is no conservation measure in place for this species or its habitats, even though the state of Michoacán is known for having a great diversity of flora species (CONABIO 2005). Taking a precautionary approach Eugenia turneri is here classified as Critically Endangered (CR), under B2ab(iii). It is worth mentioning that the only existing collection was made in 1950, therefore, and new efforts must be made to collect the species in this region. To confirm if this species could be also tagged as “Possibly Extinct” the documentation must summarize the lines of evidence for and against extinction, describing the surveys carried out to search for the species and specifying the date and relevant details of the last confirmed record (IUCN 2019). 40. Eugenia letreroana Lundell, Wrightia 3: 15 (1961b) EOO: 17,971.950 km ². AOO: 32 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Near Threatened. Eugenia letreroana is known to occurs from Mexico and Guatemala. The estimated of occurrence (EOO) based on records falls into the thresholds of Vulnerable category under B, whilst the estimated area of occupancy (AOO) falls into the thresholds of Endangered category under the criterion B but it would probably exceed the thresholds of this category if the remaining habitat available is taken in account. Up to five known locations are inferred. In total there are ten records available and this species is distributed in Humid Montane Forests from 1,300 to 1,400 m, in a good state of conservation, with low disturbance of anthropic activities, although presenting only use of resources for subsistence agriculture. In both countries the species occurs within protected areas in parts of its range, such as “El Triunfo” and “Laguna de Montebello”, There are only three records in Mexico collected in the state of Chiapas (WCSP 2020), and the habitat is under certain threats such as the inadequate management of forest resources and the modification of the habitat for agricultural use. However, according to CONABIO (2018) the ecological degradation is not high, given also that the indigenous population from this area still protects the forests in their lands. In addition, the area has a strong importance in terms of biodiversity for botanical and fauna studies for Mexico (Breedlove 1981, Breedlove 1986, Castillo & Narave 1992, Martínez et al. 1994, Levy-Tacher et al. 2006, INE-SEMARNAP 199b). The lack of records within Mexican territory is more related to the lack of collection effort and its unlikely related to any decline in the population. It is believed that the population of the species is in good condition. In this sense, Eugenia letreroana is classified as Near Threatened (NT) due to its restricted distribution and number of locations, meeting the criterion B1a+B1b, however under low level of habitat degradation from which is not possible to infer a continuing decline of habitat. 79. * Eugenia uxpanapensis P.E.Sánchez & L.M.Ortega, Phytologia 63: 404 (1987) EOO: 274.370 km ². AOO: 24 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Endangered. Eugenia uxpanapensis has a restricted distribution for the state of Veracruz from 150 to 350 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) fall between the thresholds of Critically Endangered and Endangered categories under the criterion B. There are up to five known locations, based on seven collection recorded, including five in the municipality of Hidalgotitlán and two in the municipality of San Andrés Tuxtla. The occurrence biome is the Humid Tropical Forest. Excepting the localities placed within the “Reserva de la Biosfera Los Tuxtlas”, which has a low level of ecological degradation (CONABIO 2018, CONANP 2006a), all the other localities are near urban areas or immerse in a fragmented landscape formed by fragmented habitats, from which is inferred a continuing decline of habitat quality. Therefore, Eugenia uxpanapensis is classified here as Endangered (EN), as it meets the criteria B1ab(iii)+B2ab(iii). Further field surveys and monitoring are needed to confirm population size, local threats, and habitat trend in the Los Tuxtlas region, which already which comprises an important region and yet studied by University National Autonomy of Mexico (UNAM). 57. * Eugenia purpusii Standley, Contr. U.S. Natl. Herb. 23: 1678 (1926) EOO: 24,552.553 km ². AOO: 12 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Vulnerable. Eugenia purpusii occurs only in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. With only three collection records distributed in the municipalities of “Santa María Huazolotitlán”, belonging to the Costa region, “San Lorenzo Victoria”, which belongs to the Mixteca region and in the municipality of “Santiago Pinotepa Nacional”, which is in the Costa region. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) nearly exceeds the thresholds of a threatened category under the criteria B, whilst the area of occupancy (AOO) falls within the thresholds of Endangered category, but it could fairly fall within the Vulnerable category due to the area of habitat still available. There are only up to three known locations based on records or literature, and different ongoing threats. The biomes where it occurs are the Humid Tropical Forest and the Humid Montane Forest, which can be found from 200 to 1,200 m elev. The habitat is mainly in a good state of conservation according to the ecological degradation index, apart from the habitat of the Mixteca region, where the species is found in forests with a high degradation due to the pressure of human activities (CONABIO 2018). Taking a precautionary approach, Eugenia purpusii is classified as Vulnerable under the criteria B 2ab(iii), D2, considering its restricted area of occupancy, the number of locations (3), an inferred continuing decline of habitat quality, plus plausible future threats which could drive the taxon to CR or EX in a very short time. Further field survey and information are needed to assess the population size, risk of stochastic events and habitat trends. Specimen examined:— MEXICO. 13. * Eugenia cantuana Lundell, Wrightia 3: 122 (1965) EOO: 126.662 km ². AOO: 12 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Vulnerable. Eugenia cantuana is endemic to Mexico and occurs in Morelos and Guerrero states, in Humid Montane Forests and in the Seasonally Dry Tropical Forests. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) fall between the thresholds of Critically Endangered and Endangered categories under the criterion B. There are only two known locations based in four records available: one location is represented by the records mainly in areas of well-preserved vegetation and lower anthropic pressure, in the borders of “Parque Nacional El Tepozteco” (state of Morelos), and another is within a locality known as Manchón Parotas (Guerrero). Although the species occurs within a protected area and in an area with low anthropic impact, from what is not possible to infer a continuing decline of habitat, it is near the urban area and any disruption caused by anthropic activities (fire events or agricultural or urban expansion) could drive the taxon to the CR or EX in a very short time. Therefore, considering its restricted area of occupancy and the number of locations, Eugenia cantuana is classified as Vulnerable (VU), as it meets the criterion D2. Specimens examined:— MEXICO. 64. Eugenia salamensis Donnell Smith, Bot. Gaz. 27: 333 (1899) EOO: 769,945.403 km ². AOO: 184 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Least Concern. Eugenia salamensis has a wide distribution within the Mexican territory, being able to be found from an area more to the north like Sinaloa to the South like Oaxaca, from 5 to 450 m elev. In addition, the species also occurs in Central America having been collected from Guatemala (Smith 1899) to Nicaragua (Barrie 2020, WCSP 2020). The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and potentially area of occupancy (AOO) based on the habitat available fairly exceed the thresholds for a threatened category under the criterion B. The most prevalent biome is Seasonally Dry Tropical Forests close to the coast. There are more than 10 known locations, based on the total of 55 collections available throughout the Mexican Pacific coast to Costa Rica. In Mexico, 29 collection records were found in eight states. Therefore, Eugenia salamensis can be classified as Least Concern (LC). Specimens examined:— MEXICO. Eugenia yautepecana has a wide distribution within the Mexican territory, from 20 to 2,460 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) exceeds the thresholds for a threatened category under the criterion B, as well as the area of occupancy (AOO) would likely exceed the thresholds of any threatened category when the remaining habitat available is taken in account. There are up to six known locations, based on six collections, three in the state of Veracruz, and one in each of the following states: Morelos, Estado de Mexico, and Tabasco. The biome is the Humid Tropical Forest and the Humid Montane Forest. The habitat is fragmented, and the records are spread across different states; however, from some localities the habitat is in a better state of conservation and with low ecological degradation (EDI, see CONABIO 2018). For example, this species occurs within the flora and fauna protection area “Biological Corridor Chichinautzin” (Morelos) and also in the proximity to the “Natural Resources Protection Area Cuencas de los ríos Valle de Bravo, Malacatepec, Tilostoc y Temascaltepec” (State of Mexico). In the states of Veracruz and Tabasco, the habitat is impacted by economic activities (CONABIO 2018, DOF 2005, CONNAP 2013) from which is inferred a continuing decline of habitat quality. Eugenia yautepecana is classified as Least Concern (LC), taking in account the remaining area of habitat available, its broad altitudinal range and low habitat specificity, despite the restricted number of locations and continuing decline of habitat in some localities. Its assessment as a threatened species based on AOO will be pending on further field surveys to confirm its current distribution, population size, local threats, and habitat trend. 62. Eugenia riograndis Lundell, Field & Lab. 13: 10 (1945) EOO: 77,063.486 km ². AOO: 100 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Least Concern. Eugenia riograndis is distributed from southeastern Mexico to Guatemala and Belize (Barrie 2020, WCSP 2020). With 29 records of collections distributed in the state of Chiapas, Tabasco in Mexico and in Guatemala and Belize. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and potentially the area of occupancy (AOO) based on the habitat available, fairly exceed the thresholds for a threatened category under the criterion B. There are more than 15 known locations and all of them have different ongoing threats. The occurrence biome is the Humid Tropical Forest from 13 to 957 m elev. The state of conservation of the habitat of this species can vary from region to region, but it is mainly affected by activities such as agriculture and the growth of small cities. As there are no information on population severely fragmented or population size to access this taxon under different criteria, Eugenia riograndis is classified as Least Concern (LC). 34. * Eugenia inconspicua Standley, Contr. U.S. Natl. Herb. 23: 1043 (1924) EOO: 4 km ². AOO: 4 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Critically Endangered. Eugenia inconspicua is endemic to Mexico and has a very restricted distribution in the city of Culiacan, in the state of Sinaloa. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) fall within the thresholds of Critically Endangered category under the criterion B. Eugenia inconspicua is known from only 2 records very close to each other in disturbed areas of the Dry Tropical Forest, from which is inferred only one location. The region has a high level of degradation, being unprotected and under enormous pressure from urban expansion (CONABIO 2018). The threats that lead to continuing decline of habitat quality are urban expansion, forest fires and other human activities. The region has very few botanical studies and floristic inventories, but efforts are particularly important due to the physiographic and climatic variations and biological diversity in this region as it is estimated that it presents around 3,500 vascular plants (Vega et al. 1989, Hernández & Vega 1989, Rzedowski 1991, Vega et al. 2000, Villaseñor & Ortiz 2014, Villaseñor 2016). The low number of records for E. inconspicua is an indicator that in the region need more efforts of collection and studies that can evaluate a more precise status of its population and habitat. Taking a precautionary approach, Eugenia insconspicua is here classified as Critically Endangered (CR) as it meets the criterion B 2ab (iii). Specimen examined: — MEXICO. 45. * Eugenia mozomboensis P. E. Sánchez, Phytologia 81: 126 (1986) EOO: 5,083.443 km ². AOO: 12 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Endangered. Eugenia mozomboensis has a distribution known only in the states of Veracruz and Hidalgo, occurring in the remnants of Humid Tropical Forest and Humid Montane Forest. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) falls within the thresholds of Endangered and Vulnerable categories under the criterion B, whilst the estimated area of occupancy (AOO) falls into the thresholds of Endangered category. Three collection records were found, two in Veracruz and one for Hidalgo, representing two different locations and all of them have ongoing threats. The habitat is impacted by anthropic activity, such as agriculture, extraction of miners and native forests, in addition to urban growth (CONABIO 2018) from which is inferred a continuing decline of habitat quality. Taking a precautionary approach, Eugenia mozomboensis is classified as Endangered (EN) considering that it is closer the thresholds for Endangered category than Vulnerable (VU), based on its estimated extent of occurrence and number of locations (less than 5). Therefore, it meets the criteria B 1ab(iii)+ B 2ab(iii). Specimens examined:— MEXICO. 1. Eugenia acapulcensis Steudel, Nomencl. Bot., ed. 2, 1: 601 (1840) = Eugenia campechiana Lundell, Contr. Univ. Michigan Herb. 7: 32 (1942). EOO: 5,208,765.006 km ². AOO: 1,148.00 km². Evaluation of IUCN: Least Concern. This species has a wide distribution in the American continent, occurring from Mexico to Brazil, in addition to the Antilles (WCSP 2020). In the Mexican territory it is known in 13 states, with records in the northwest, northeast (states along the Gulf of Mexico coast), central, southwest, and southeast Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula. The species’ habitats occur in remnants of Humid and Dry tropical forests. There are two occurrence records in two important Mexican reserves for the protection of biodiversity managed by the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP). These are the “Calakmul Biosphere Reserve” and the “Selva el Ocote Biosphere Reserve” (INE-SEMARNAP 1999a, CONANP 2001). In Belize there are records in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve and in Guatemala in the Maya Biosphere Reserve. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) exceeds the thresholds for a threatened category under the criterion B. Eugenia acapulcensis area of occupancy (AOO) would likely exceed the threshold of a threatened category when remaining habitat available is considered since the species occurs within several protected areas. However, the area of occupancy (AOO) is underestimated due to its low habitat specificity and unbalanced surveys across its entire range. According to recent assessment by BGCI & IUCN (2019a), the species is currently in the Least Concern (LC) category. Specimens examined:— MEXICO. 78. * Eugenia uliginosa Lundell, Wrightia 3: 20 (1961b) EOO: 114,240.681 km ². AOO: 32 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Near Threatened. Eugenia uliginosa is distributed in the states of Veracruz, Chiapas, and Oaxaca from 270 to 950 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) exceeds the thresholds for a threatened category under the criterion B, as well as the area of occupancy (AOO) would likely exceed the thresholds of Endangered category if the remaining habitat available is taken in account. There are eight known locations based on 10collections recorded. The occurrence biome is the Humid Tropical Forest. The habitat is mostly conserved and with little alteration. Some localities in Chiapas that are within the region known as “Selva Lacandona”, are in excellent condition, as well as the “Reserva de la Biosfera Los Tuxtlas”, in Veracruz, which has conserved forests. However, the situation in Oaxaca is different, and the species is found in remnants of impacted forests and under a lot of pressure from the urban area expansion (CONABIO 2018, CONANP 2006a), from where a continuing decline of habitat quality is inferred. Eugenia uliginosa is classified as Near Threatened (NT) due to the restricted number of locations related to an inferred decline of habitat quality, especially in Oaxaca and uncertainties on its area of occupancy (AOO). Its assessment as a threatened species based on AOO will be pending of further field surveys to confirm its current distribution, population size, local threats, and habitat trend. 46. * Eugenia naraveana Cházaro & Franco-Gutiérrez, Phytotaxa 286(4): 292 (2016) EOO: 0 km². AOO: 4 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Critically Endangered. Eugenia naraveana is known only in the vicinity of the “Cofre de Perote” volcano hills in Veracruz, growing in the Humid Montane Forest, with only the type of collection as the only record, being found from 2,100 to 2,600 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) fall into the Critically Endangered category, under the criterion B. The habitat is highly impacted by agricultural activity and the extraction of native forest, but there have been efforts to restore vegetation since 2008 in the region (CONABIO 2018, Vázquez et al. 2014). In addition, as an interesting data, there are numerous research describing the importance of the floristic biodiversity of this region as it contains ca. 1,500 vascular plants (Castillo-Campos et al. 2009, Sánchez-Vindas 1990, Rzedowski 1978, Vázquez et al. 2014). Regarding its restricted distribution related to only one location and an inferred continuing decline of habitat, Eugenia naraveana is here classified as Critically Endangered (CR), as it meets the criterion B 2ab (iii). Further field surveys and information on population size, local threats and habitat trends are recommended, as well as monitoring. Specimen examined:— MEXICO. Veracruz: A. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) exceeds the thresholds for a threatened category under the criterion B. The area of occupancy (AOO) would likely exceed the thresholds of any threatened category when the remaining habitat available is taken in account. There are more than 10 known locations based on 46 collections, including records from Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and Honduras. In Mexico, this species has a distribution in the state of Chiapas, in the rainforest reserves with a good state of conservation such as the “Reserva de la Biosfera Montes Azules” and the “Reserva de la Biosfera Lacan-Tun”, which count on efforts of the Mayan Lacandones indigenous communities for the conservation of forests and studies that argue the great value of biodiversity of flora in the region (CONABIO 2018, Marion 1991, Nations & Nigh 1981, Martínez et al. 1994, INE-SEMARNAP 2000a). Eugenia chinajensis Standley & Steyermark, Publ. Field Columb. Mus., Bot. Ser. 23: 129 (1944) This species was excluded due to lack of testimonial information that it was collected in Mexican territory. Eugenia chinajensis was only mentioned by Villaseñor (2016), in the Checklist of vascular plants native to Mexico, occurring in the Mexican state of Chiapas, but for lack of a voucher it was excluded. According to Barrie (2020), Eugenia chinajensis is endemic to Guatemala., Published as part of Uc Gala, Victor C., Valdemarin, Karinne Sampaio, Lucas, Eve, Negrão, Raquel & Mazine, Fiorella F., 2023, Eugenia (Myrtaceae) from Mexico: checklist, distribution, and conservation assessments, pp. 99-140 in Phytotaxa 583 (2) on page 131, DOI: 10.11646/phytotaxa.583.2.1, http://zenodo.org/record/7609258, {"references":["Villasenor, J. Evaluation of IUCN: Least Concern. Eugenia trunciflora has a distribution in five states of Mexico, mainly on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, from 39 to 2,040 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) exceeds the thresholds for a threatened category under the criterion B, as well as the area of occupancy (AOO) would likely exceed the thresholds of Endangered category if the remaining habitat available is taken in account. There are 10 to 11 known locations based on 11 records, and all of them have different ongoing threats. The occurring biomes are the Humid Tropical Forest and the Humid Montane Forest. The habitat in some regions such as Veracruz and San Luis Potosi, is represented by conserved forests, with a low rate of degradation. However, in the state of Puebla, Chiapas, and Tabasco it was found in remnants of forests with a high impact of human activities such as extensive agriculture and urban development (CONABIO 2018) from which is inferred a continuing decline of habitat quality. The species occurs at least in one protected area (Reserva de la Biosfera Sierra Gorda). Therefore, Eugenia trunciflora is classified as Least Concern (LC). Specimens examined:— MEXICO. 56. * Eugenia pueblana Lundell, Wrightia 2: 167 (1961a) EOO: 9.531, 752 km ². AOO: 20 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Vulnerable. Eugenia pueblana is endemic to Mexico, with distribution in three states, Puebla, Veracruz, and Querétaro, from 920 to 1,200 m elev. The biome where it occurs is the Humid Montane Forest. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) falls between the thresholds of Endangered and Vulnerable categories, under the criterion B, whilst the area of occupancy (AOO) falls within the thresholds of Endangered category, but it could fairly fall within the Vulnerable category due to the area of habitat still available. There are only up to five known locations, based on five records, and there are different ongoing threats. The habitat is in a good state of conservation in the state of Querétaro, as some collections were carried out within the protected area “Reserva de la Biosfera Sierra Gorda”, an area of great biological richness of both fauna and flora (CONABIO 2018, Luna et al. 1988, 1989, 1994, INE-SEMARNAP 1999d). The species can be considered rare due to the low number of collections within the region. Considering its occurrence in lower altitudinal range, potentially more affected by human activities and the occurrence within only a protected area, Eugenia pueblana is classified as Vulnerable (VU), as it meets the criteria B 1ab(iii)+ B 2ab(iii), D2. Further, field survey and information is needed to assess the population size, risk of stochastic events and habitat trends. Specimens examined:— MEXICO. 83. Eugenia winzerlingii Standley, Trop. Woods 11: 20 (1927) EOO: 172,921.205 km ². AOO: 284 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Least Concern. Eugenia winzerlingii has a wide distribution in the Mexican territory, occurring mainly in the southeast of Mexico, but also in Central American countries like Guatemala and Belize (WCSP 2020). The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) exceeds the thresholds for a threatened category under the criterion B, as well as the area of occupancy (AOO) would likely exceed the thresholds of any threatened category when the remaining habitat available is taken in account. There are more than 10 known locations based on 106 collections recorded. The occurring biomes are the Humid Tropical Forest and the Humid Montane Forest, from 11 to 1,363 m elev. The habitat is mostly in a good state of conservation and with a low rate of ecological degradation, including occurrences within protected areas such as “Reserva de la Biosfera de Calakmul” and “Campo Experimental El Tormento”, both in Campeche and the “Reserva de la Biosfera Montes Azules”, in Chiapas (Mexico), the Maya Biosphere Reserve and the San Miguel La Palotada El Zotz Protected Biotope (Guatemala), and the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary (Belize) (CONABIO 2018, INESEMARNAP 1999a, INE-SEMARNAP 2000a). Therefore, according to the analysis by the BGCI & IUCN (2019L), Eugenia winzerlingii is classified as Least Concern (LC). Specimens examined:— MEXICO. 66. * Eugenia siltepecana Lundell, Amer. Midl. Naturalist 19: 430 (1938) EOO: 3,855.100 km². AOO: 24 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Vulnerable. Eugenia siltepecana has a restricted distribution, occurring only in the state of Chiapas, from 600 to 2,000 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) falls within the thresholds of Endangered category under the criterion B, whilst the area of occupancy (AOO) falls between the thresholds of Critically Endangered and Endangered categories. There are up to six known locations based on seven records from five municipalities that are divided into three important regions, such as “La Sierra Mariscal” and “La Frailesca,” which comprise part of the “Reserva de la Biosfera El Triunfo”, and Metropolitan region”. The occurrence biome is mainly the Humid Montane Forest. Most of the species’ habitat is in a good state of conservation due to its proximity to the “Reserva de la Biosfera El Triunfo” (CONABIO 2018, INE-SEMARNAP 1999b). However, the species also occurs near the Metropolitan region, where the threats are the expansion of cities and economic growth, from which is inferred a continuing decline of habitat quality. Therefore, Eugenia siltepecana is classified here as Vulnerable (VU), under criteria B 1ab(iii)+ B 2ab(iii), regarding its restricted distribution in only six known locations and an inferred continuing decline of habitat quality, especially in the areas outside the protected area. Further field survey is needed to confirm if this taxon occurs within the protected area, as well as, on population size, habitat trend and potential future threats such as stochastic effects related to climate change on Humid Montane Forests. Specimen examined:— MEXICO. 63. Eugenia rubella Lundell, Wrightia 3: 18 (1961b) EOO: 56,533.444 km ². AOO: 48 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Least Concern. Eugenia rubella is distributed only in the state of Chiapas, Mexico, and Guatemala (Barrie 2020, WCSP, 2020). The occurrence biome is the Humid Montane Forest, from 950 to 1,550 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and potentially its area of occupancy (AOO) based on the habitat available, fairly exceed the thresholds for a threatened category under the criterion B. There are more than 10 known locations, considering based on the 16 collections from southern Mexico to Guatemala. In Mexico, only three collection records are known in three different localities in the state of Chiapas (municipalities of Ocozocuatla de Espinoza, Oxchuc and La Trinidad). The conservation status of the tropical forests in that region is under protection by government agencies, and international cooperation has been important for the study and conservation of the tropical forests of the Maya Biosphere Reserve and the Mesoamerican biological corridor. 26. Eugenia foetida Persoon, Syn. Pl. 2: 29 (1806) EOO: 328,652.348 km ². AOO: 300 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Least Concern. Eugenia foetida has a wide distribution in the American continent, occurring from southeastern Mexico to Central America, in addition to the Antilles (WCSP 2020). The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) exceeds the thresholds for a threatened category under the criterion B. The area of occupancy (AOO) would likely exceed the thresholds of a threatened category when the remaining habitat available is taken in account due to unbalanced surveys in its entire range. Eugenia foetida occurs in protected areas for the Humid Tropical Forest biome. There are more than 10 known locations based on 103 records, where the species is distributed in Dry and Humid Tropical Forests, ranging from 20 to 500 m elev. The habitat has a low rate of environmental degradation, however, there is a high anthropic pressure on these forests, regarding the interest for extensive agriculture (CONABIO 2018). In Mexico, the species occurs within the “Reserva de la Biosfera de Calakmul” and “Reserva de la Biosfera Los Petenes”, both in Campeche, a state which concentrated more collections (INE-SEMARNAP 1999a, CONANP 2006c). The species is also protected within the Maya Biosphere Reserve, El Mirador National Park (Guatemala) and in the Rio Bravo Conservation Area (Belize), all of the aforementioned make up an important network of natural areas that extend to the Mexican territory. According to the analysis by the IUCN & BGCI (2020), E. foetida is considered as Least Concern (LC). Specimens examined:— MEXICO. 30. * Eugenia harkerae E. Sánchez-Chávez & Zamudio, Brittonia 71(4): 394 (2019) EOO: 4 km ². AOO: 4 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Critically Endangered. Eugenia harkerae is considered endemic to Mexico and restricted to the state of Jalisco, in the “Sierra Occidental” region, municipality of San Sebastian del Oeste. The species occurs in the Humid Montane Forest, between 1,400 to 1,850 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) fall within the thresholds of Critically Endangered category under the criterion B. There is only one location for this species, as it is known only from the type collection. A continuing decline of habitat quality is inferred as its habitat is slowly deteriorating due to the impact of new roads, growing urban settlements and extensive tourism (Reynoso Dueñas et al. 2007), besides being in the polygon of the Protection Area “CADNR 043”, in Jalisco (DOF 1949). For this reason, Eugenia harkerae is classified as Critically Endangered (CR) criterion. Specimen examined:— MEXICO. 15. Eugenia capulioides Lundell, Contr. Univ. Michigan Herb. 7: 32 (1942) EOO: 154,633.510 km ². AOO: 32 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Least Concern. Eugenia capulioides has a distribution on the Pacific coast, in the states of Chiapas, Guerrero and Morelos, in addition to Guatemala (Barrie 2020). The species can be found from 660 to 1,800 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) exceeds the threshold for a threatened category under criterion B, whilst the estimated area of occupancy (AOO) falls into the Endangered category. However, the area of occupancy (AOO) is considered underestimated due to the area of habitat available. Six collection records were found in Mexico, four in Chiapas and one for Guerrero and Morelos, and two in Guatemala. The occurring biomes are the Humid Tropical Forest and the Humid Montane Forest. The habitat is in a good state of conservation as it occurs within the “Sierra Mariscal” in Chiapas next to the “Reserva de la Biosfera El Triunfo”, in areas of conserved forest with low ecological degradation (Guerrero) and within the “Parque Nacional El Tepozteco” (Morelos) an important area for the conservation of mountain rainforests (CONABIO 2018, INE-SEMARNAP 1999b, DOF 1937). Therefore, Eugenia capulioides is classified as Least Concern (LC) considering it does not meet all the required criteria and occurs mainly in protected areas. Specimens examined:— MEXICO. 25. Eugenia flavoviridis Lundell, Amer. Midl. Naturalist 29: 479 (1943) EOO: 292,572.606 km ². AOO: 84 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Least Concern. Eugenia flavoviridis has a distribution in southeastern Mexico and in Guatemala and Belize (WCSP 2020). The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) exceeds the thresholds for a threatened category under the criterion B. The area of occupancy (AOO) would likely exceed the thresholds of any threatened category when the remaining habitat available is taken in account, due to unbalanced surveys in its entire range. There is only one record for Eugenia flavoviridis from Mexico, based in a collection made in the Humid tropical forest within the protected area known as Reserva de la Biosfera Montes Azules, in Chiapas (INE-SEMARNAP 2000a). The region has a low threat of habitat degradation, mainly due to the conservation of the forest carried out a long time ago by the Maya Lacandon indigenous people, which works to conserve the habitat of several species of flora and fauna, as well as cultural activities of food cultivation (CONABIO 2018). The region is rich in biodiversity, constituting the biological corridor “Laguna Lachua National Park”, (Guatemala), where the tropical forests of Mexico and Guatemala together represent the second largest rainforest reserve (Breedlove 1981, Martínez et al. 1994). The scarcity of records of Eugenia flavoviridis in Mexico is related to effort of field surveys and is not related to local risk of extinction. The species is classified here as Least Concern (LC). 73. Eugenia toledinensis Lundell, Phytologia 1: 307 (1939) EOO: 11,286.360 km ². AOO: 36 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Vulnerable. The distribution of Eugenia toledinensis in Mexico is in the state of Chiapas, but it occurs even in Guatemala and Belize (Barrie 2020, WCSP 2020). The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) falls within the thresholds of Vulnerable category under the criterion B, whilst the area of occupancy (AOO) would probably exceed the thresholds of Endangered category if the remaining habitat available is taken in account. There are between six to nine known collections based on the records available and all of them are under different ongoing threats. In Mexico, only one collection record was made, in the municipality of Ocosingo, in Chiapas, but a total of 11 collections have been registered in the region among neighboring countries. The occurrence biome is the Humid Tropical Forest and Humid Montane Forest, from 0 to 1,232 m elev. The habitat is in a good state of conservation, due to the history of human settlements of indigenous origin who have conserved most of the area however, there are no records in natural areas that are under protection. In addition, considering that this species occurs across a low altitudinal range, usually more affected by anthropic activities, it is inferred a continuing decline of habitat quality. The species can be considered rare due to the extremely low number of collections within Mexican territory. In this way, Eugenia toledinensis is classified here as Vulnerable (VU), as it meets the criteria B1ab(iii)+B2ab(iii). Specimens examined:— MEXICO. Chiapas: González et al. 1720 (MEXU!). 68. * Eugenia sotoesparzae P.E.Sánchez, Phytologia 61: 139 (1986) EOO: 107,927.030 km ². AOO: 24 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Near Threatened. Eugenia sotoesparzae occurs only in Oaxaca, Veracruz, and Nayarit, from 2 to 2,078 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) exceeds the thresholds for a threatened category under the criterion B, as well as its area of occupancy (AOO) would probably exceed the thresholds of the Endangered category if the remaining habitat available is taken in account. Currently, there are up to four known locations based on seven records, with five from the state of Veracruz, one collection from Oaxaca in the “Mixteca” region and one collection from the Nayarit in the municipality of Compostela on the coast. The occurrence biome is the Humid Montane Forest and the Humid Tropical Forest. The habitat is fragmented, especially in the localities of Nayarit and Oaxaca where forests are being affected by human activities such as agriculture and tourism. In Veracruz, the specimens were collected within the “Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve”, which is in good environmental condition (CONABIO 2018, CONANP 2006a). The species can be considered rare due to the low number of collections. Eugenia sotoesparzae could be classified as Vulnerable under the criterion D2, due to the number of locations (Eugenia sotoesparzae is classified here as Near Threatened (NT) based on area of occupancy, number of location and an inferred continuing decline of habitat quality. The assessment as a threatened species is dependent of further field surveys to confirm its current distribution, population size, local threats, and habitat trend. 85. * Eugenia xilitlensis McVaugh, Fieldiana, Bot. 29: 462 (1963) EOO: 100.364 km ². AOO: 12 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Endangered. Eugenia xilitlensis occurs only in Querétaro and San Luis Potosi, from 1,200 to 1,300 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) falls between the thresholds of Critically Endangered and Endangered categories under the criterion B, as well as the area of occupancy (AOO). There are three known locations based on three collections recorded, two in Querétaro and one in San Luis Potosi. This species occurs in Humid Montane Forest biome. The habitat is important for biodiversity as it is estimated that about 774 species, that represent 25% of Mexico’s floristic wealth, are within the “Reserva de la Biosfera Sierra Gorda” (Rzedowski 1991, INE-SEMARNAP 1999d). However, data on the conservation status of this reserve indicate that the mountain rainforests in this region are under pressure due to the impact of changes in soil use into coffee production and other agricultural production from the local communities. Recently, however, a sustainable production proposal has been carried out to preserve the natural resources offered from the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve (Ruiz-Corzo & Pedraza 2007). Taking a precautionary approach, considering that there is no specific conservation in place for this species yet, Eugenia xilitlensis is here classified as Endangered (EN) due to its restricted distribution, related to only three locations and continuing decline of habitat, meeting the criteria B1ab(iii)+B2ab(iii). Specimens examined:— MEXICO. 16. Eugenia cerrocacaoensis Barrie, Novon 15: 7 (2005) EOO: 30,355.546 km ². AOO: 12 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Least Concern. Eugenia cerrocacaoensis is an endemic species of the region known as Mesoamerica that covers the Mexican states of the Southeast and Costa Rica (WCSP 2020). In Mexico, two collections were recorded only in the state of Oaxaca, which occur in an area with good conservation status, with the collection zone not having a decline in the observed habitat and there are no obvious threats (CONABIO 2018). In the case of Costa Rica, the specimen collected in the Guanacaste National Park at an altitude of 1000 m, the area is heavily wooded and preserved. The biome of occurrence is the Humid Tropical Forest. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) exceeds the threshold for a threatened category under criterion B, whilst the estimated area of occupancy (AOO) falls into the Endangered category. However, the area of occupancy (AOO) is considered underestimated due to the area of habitat available. At present, Eugenia cerrocacaoensis is classified as Least Concern (LC). 81. Eugenia verapazensis Lundell, Wrightia 5: 3 (1972) EOO: 52.673 km ². AOO: 8 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Endangered. Eugenia verapazensis occurs in Chiapas, Mexico, and Guatemala (WCSP 2020). The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) fall within the thresholds of Critically Endangered category under the criterion B. There are only two known locations based on three collections, with two records from the municipality of Palenque, in the Mexican territory, and one record from Baja Verapaz (Guatemala). The occurrence biome is the Humid Tropical Forest, from 50 to 60 m elev. The species’ habitat is fragmented and degraded due to agricultural activities within the region, from which is inferred a continuing decline of habitat quality. The low collections are due to few efforts to document the species. Considering that this species occurs in a low altitudinal range, usually more affected by anthropic activities, and that there is no conservation measure in place for this species, a precautionary approach is taken and Eugenia verapazensis is classified as Endangered (EN) due its restricted distribution, related to two different locations and inferred continuing decline of habitat, meeting the criteria B1ab(iii)+B2ab(iii). Considering that the last collection was recorded more than 30 years ago, further field efforts and information on population size, local threats, and habitat trend are urgently needed to guarantee that this species is not driven to categories of higher risk in a very short time. Specimens examined:— MEXICO. 6. Eugenia axillaris (Swartz) Willdenow, Sp. Pl., ed. 4, 2: 960 (1799) Basionym: Myrtus axillaris Swartz (1788: 68). EOO: 1,035,176.908 km ². AOO: 120 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Least Concern. Eugenia axillaris has a wide distribution in the American continent, occurring from Florida (United States) to Central America, in addition to the Antilles (WCSP 2020). Just 30 records are known for Mexico, where the species is distributed in the Dry and Humid Tropical Forests close to the coast and in the Federal Biosphere Reserves as the “Reserva de la Biosfera de Calakmul”, “Reserva de la Biosfera Montes Azules”, “Reserva de la Biosfera Selva El Ocote” and “Reserva de la Biosfera Sian Ka´an” from sea level to 1,100 m elev. (INE-SEMARNAP 1999a, INESEMARNAP 2000a, CONANP 2001, CONANP 2014). The habitat has a high rate of environmental degradation due to direct anthropogenic impacts on coastal ecosystems (CONABIO 2018). According to recent assessment by BGCI & IUCN (2019b), Eugenia axillaris is currently in the Least Concern (LC) category. Specimens examined:— MEXICO. 4. * Eugenia amatenangensis Lundell, Wrightia 3: 10 (1961b) EOO: 11,095.596 km ². AOO: 24 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Near Threatened. Eugenia amatenangensis has a known distribution only in the state of Chiapas, exclusively on the tops of the hills, oscillating between 750 and 1,880 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) falls within the thresholds of Vulnerable category whilst the estimated area of occupancy (AOO) falls within the thresholds of the Endangered category, under the criterion B. Six collection records were found in 6 different municipalities, from which is inferred 5 locations due to the proximity between two localities around Horizonte. The type of biome where it occurs is the Humid Montane Forest. The habitat of occurrence of the species is under low threat and is an area of high altitude and low agricultural interest (CONABIO 2018). Therefore, Eugenia amatenangensis is currently classified as Near Threatened (NT) due to restricted distribution and number of locations, meeting the criteria B 1a+ B 2a and it is not under any kind of protected area or conservation measure, even though currently it is not possible to infer a decline of habitat. Thus, attention and further information on population, potential threats and habitat trend are needed to ensure that it would be not threatened in a very short time. Specimen examined:— MEXICO. 36. Eugenia karwinskyana O.Berg, Linnaea 29: 244 (1858) EOO: 653,188.825 km ². AOO: 288 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Least Concern. = Eugenia tabascensis Lundell, Phytologia 1: 482 (1941). = Eugenia yucatanensis Standley, Publ. Field Columb. Mus., Bot. Ser. 8: 28 (1930). Eugenia karwinskyana has a wide distribution within Mexico, but it also occurs in Belize and Guatemala (WCSP 2020). The biome of occurrence of the species in Mexican territory is the Dry and Humid Tropical Forest, from 0 to 1,500 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) exceeds the thresholds for a threatened category under the criterion B. The area of occupancy (AOO) would likely exceed the thresholds of any threatened category when the remaining habitat available is taken in account. There are more than 10 known locations based on 24 collection records in Mexico within protected areas such as “Reserva de la Biosfera Los Tuxtlas”, in Veracruz, “Reserva de la Biosfera de Sian Ka´an”, “Porción norte de la franja costera oriental, terrestre y marinas de la Isla de Cozumel”, in Quintana Roo and “Reserva de la Biosfera Ria Lagartos”, in Yucatán. The habitat of the species for being in protected areas is in a good state of conservation, thus allowing its development (CONABIO 2018, CONANP 2006a, CONANP 2014, DOF 2012, INE-SEMARNAP 1999e). Therefore, according with the BGCI & IUCN (2019f), Eugenia karwinskyana is classified as Least Concern (LC) in terms of its degree of threat due to EOO greater than 20,000 km ² and occurring in protected areas without imminent threats into several countries. Specimens examined:— Aguascalientes (Maury 6349 (MEXU!); Chiapas: Ton 2280 (LL); Puebla: Meza 566 (MEXU!); Quintana Roo: Cabrera & Téllez 11125 (MEXU!); San Luis Potosí: Maury 6349 (MEXU!); Tabasco: Matuda 3561 (K!); Veracruz: Robledo et al. 838 (MEXU!); Yucatán: Cabrera & Cabrera 11189 (MEXU!). 54. * Eugenia praeterita McVaugh, Fieldiana, Bot. 29: 450 (1963) EOO: 8 km ². AOO: 8 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Endangered. Eugenia praeterita is distributed in the state of Chiapas and Oaxaca, occurring in the ecotone between the Humid Montane Forest and the Temperate Forest, from 1,250 to 2,134 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) fall within the thresholds of the Critically Endangered category, under the criterion B. It is only known by two records, representing two different locations. The habitat has a low rate of ecological degradation due to a smaller number of people living in the region known as “Sierra Morena”, in Chiapas; however, in the case of the locality in Oaxaca, the region is severely fragmented, threatening the habitat of the species due to the impact of human activities (CONABIO 2018). Considering that there is no information on population size or population severely fragmented, Eugenia praeterita is classified here as Endangered (EN), as it meets the criterion B 1ab(iii)+ B 2ab(iii) due to its restricted distribution, number of locations and continuing decline of habitat quality. 21. * Eugenia colipensis O.Berg, Linnaea 29: 243 (1858) EOO: 2,429.969 km ². AOO: 16 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Endangered. Eugenia colipensis is endemic to Mexico and has a restricted distribution within the state of Veracruz and only known from 5 collections. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) fall into the thresholds of Endangered category under the criterion B. The type of biome in which the species occurs is the Humid Tropical Forest. There are inferred only four well known locations and all of them have different ongoing threats. The species’ habitat is under very high threat due to the region’s agricultural history and urban development, these factors are the major threats (CONABIO 2018) from which is inferred a continuing decline of habitat quality. Eugenia colipensis is classified as Endangered (EN) as it meets this category under the criteria B 1ab(iii)+ B 2ab(iii). Specimen examined:— MEXICO. Veracruz: Velasco 768 (MEXU!)., Published as part of Uc Gala, Victor C., Valdemarin, Karinne Sampaio, Lucas, Eve, Negrão, Raquel & Mazine, Fiorella F., 2023, Eugenia (Myrtaceae) from Mexico: checklist, distribution, and conservation assessments, pp. 99-140 in Phytotaxa 583 (2) on page 109, DOI: 10.11646/phytotaxa.583.2.1, http://zenodo.org/record/7609258, {"references":["CONABIO (2018) Indice de degradacion ecologica (IDE) por municipios, escala: 1: 250000. 1 ed. 18. Eugenia choapamensis Standley, Publ. Field Columb. Mus., Bot. Ser. 22: 93 (1940) EOO: 138,775.826 km ². AOO: 60 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Least Concern. Eugenia choapamensis has a distribution in the Mesoamerican region from the Southeast and Gulf of Mexico to Honduras (WCSP 2020). In Mexico the species is known only in the states of Chiapas, Veracruz, and Oaxaca, ranging from 200 to 1,200 m elev. Nineteen collection records were found in the Mesoamerican region. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) exceeds the threshold for a threatened category under criterion B, whilst the estimated area of occupancy (AOO) falls into the Endangered category. However, the area of occupancy (AOO) is considered underestimated due to the area of habitat available. The habitat of occurrence is the Humid Tropical Forest. The habitat is under high threat in the region of Veracruz and north of Chiapas in the municipality of Pichucalco. The development of cities, expansion of the agricultural frontier, forest fires and other anthropic activities are the major threats from which is inferred a continuing decline of habitat quality. Eugenia choapamensis also occurs within the “Reserva de la Biosfera Selva El Ocote” located in Chiapas and in the “Selva las Chimalapas” in Oaxaca, where the habitat presents better conditions (CONABIO 2018). In Central American countries there are records the species, in Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve (Honduras) located, and only in areas of preserved Tropical Forests in Guatemala and Belize. As such, Eugenia choapamensis is classified here as Least Concern (LC). Specimens examined:— MEXICO. Chiapas: Miranda 8488 (MEXU!); Oaxaca: Hernández 5 8, ASU); Veracruz: Vázquez et al. 17. * Eugenia chiapensis Lundell, Amer. Midl. Naturalist 20: 238 (1938) EOO: 251.482 km ². AOO: 12 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Vulnerable. Eugenia chiapensis is an endemic species that occurs in the Humid Montane Forest and Temperate Forest in the state of Chiapas. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) fall into the Endangered category. There are only 3 known locations and all of them have different ongoing threats. Eugenia chiapensis occurs mainly in areas of well-preserved vegetation and under lower anthropic pressure (CONABIO 2018), such as in the vicinity of “Reserva de la Biosfera El Triunfo” in the state of Chiapas (INE-SEMARNAP 1999b) but near to urban areas, excluded from any conservation measure. In this case, any disruption caused by anthropic activities (fire events, agricultural or urban expansion) could drive the taxon to the CR or EX in a very short time. Therefore, considering the restricted area of occupancy and the number of locations, Eugenia chiapensis is classified as Vulnerable (VU), as it meets the criterion D2. Specimen examined:— MEXICO. Chiapas: Heath & Long 945 (MEXU!)., Published as part of Uc Gala, Victor C., Valdemarin, Karinne Sampaio, Lucas, Eve, Negrão, Raquel & Mazine, Fiorella F., 2023, Eugenia (Myrtaceae) from Mexico: checklist, distribution, and conservation assessments, pp. 99-140 in Phytotaxa 583 (2) on page 108, DOI: 10.11646/phytotaxa.583.2.1, http://zenodo.org/record/7609258, {"references":["CONABIO (2018) Indice de degradacion ecologica (IDE) por municipios, escala: 1: 250000. 1 ed. 69. * Eugenia standleyi McVaugh, Fieldiana, Bot. 29: 458 (1963) EOO: 23,288.315 km ². AOO: 16 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Near Threatened. Eugenia standleyi has a distribution only in the southeast of Mexico, in the states of Chiapas and Oaxaca, from 132 to 2,098 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) nearly meets the thresholds of Vulnerable category under the criterion B, whilst the area of occupancy (AOO) based on the habitat available probably exceeds the thresholds of the Endangered category under the criterion B. There are up to four known locations, based on five specimens recorded, two for the state of Chiapas (in the municipalities of Cintalapa and Arriaga) and three records in Oaxaca (in the municipalities of Santo Domingo Tehuantepec and Asunción Cuyotepeji). The biomes are the Humid Tropical Forest and the Humid Montane Forest. The habitat in Oaxaca is fragmented and impacted by human activities; and in the state of Chiapas the habitat is in better condition, since the records were found in the vicinity of the “Reserva de la Biosfera La Sepultura”, which has low impact, and the degradation of the habitat has been lower (CONABIO 2018). Eugenia standleyi can be considered as rare, due to the low number of collections. This species could be assessed as Vulnerable under the criterion B 2ab (iii)+D2, due to the number of locations (Eugenia standleyi is classified here as Near Threatened (NT) based on restricted distribution and number of locations and its dependency on protected areas. However, the assessment as a threatened species based on AOO will be pending of further field surveys to confirm its current distribution, population size, local threats, and habitat trend. Specimens examined:— MEXICO. Chiapas: Breedlove & Almeda 64899 (MEXU!), Oaxaca: Alexander 346 (MEXU!)., Published as part of Uc Gala, Victor C., Valdemarin, Karinne Sampaio, Lucas, Eve, Negrão, Raquel & Mazine, Fiorella F., 2023, Eugenia (Myrtaceae) from Mexico: checklist, distribution, and conservation assessments, pp. 99-140 in Phytotaxa 583 (2) on pages 124-125, DOI: 10.11646/phytotaxa.583.2.1, http://zenodo.org/record/7609258, {"references":["CONABIO (2018) Indice de degradacion ecologica (IDE) por municipios, escala: 1: 250000. 1 ed.
