Abstract The CMS detector, including its muon system, has been operating at the CERN LHC in increasingly challenging conditions for about 15 years. The muon detector was designed to provide excellent triggering and track reconstruction for muons produced in proton–proton collisons at an instantaneous luminosity ( $$\mathcal {L}$$ L ) of $$1 \times 10^{34}$$ 1 × 10 34 cm $$^{-2}$$ - 2 s $$^{-1}$$ - 1 . During the Run 2 data-taking period (2015–2018), the LHC achieved an instantaneous luminosity of twice its design value, resulting in larger background rates and making the efficient detection of muons more difficult. While some backgrounds result from natural radioactivity, cosmic rays, and interactions of the circulating protons with residual gas in the beam pipe, the dominant source of background hits in the muon system arises from proton–proton interactions themselves. Charged hadrons leaving the calorimeters produce energy deposits in the muon chambers. In addition, high-energy particles interacting in the hadron calorimeter and forward shielding elements generate thermal neutrons, which leak out of the calorimeter and shielding structures, filling the CMS cavern. We describe the method used to measure the background rates in the various muon subsystems. These rates, in conjunction with simulations, can be used to estimate the expected backgrounds in the High-Luminosity LHC. This machine will run for at least 10 years starting in 2029 reaching an instantaneous luminosity of $$\mathcal {L} = 5 \times \text {10}^\text {34}\,\text {cm}^\text {-2}\,\text {s}^\text {-1}$$ L = 5 × 10 34 cm -2 s -1 and increasing ultimately to $$\mathcal {L} = 7.5 \times \text {10}^\text {34}\,\text {cm}^\text {-2}\,\text {s}^\text {-1}$$ L = 7.5 × 10 34 cm -2 s -1 . These background estimates have been a key ingredient for the planning and design of the muon detector upgrade.

It is self-evident that our chests expand and contract during breathing but, surprisingly, exactly how individual alveoli change shape over the respiratory cycle is still a matter of debate. Some argue that all the alveoli expand and contract rhythmically. Others claim that the lung volume change is due to groups of alveoli collapsing and reopening during ventilation. Although this question might seem to be an insignificant detail for healthy individuals, it might be a matter of life and death for patients with compromised lungs. Past analyses were based on static post-mortem preparations primarily due to technological limitations, and therefore, by definition, incapable of providing dynamic information. In contrast, this study provides the first comprehensive dynamic data on how the shape of the alveoli changes, and, further, provides valuable insights into the optimal lung volume for efficient gas exchange. Background: Exercise is known to reduce adverse side effects of androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) on quality of life, bone health and fatigue for prostate cancer (PCa) patients. We conducted a systematic review with meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of multidisciplinary interventions on body composition and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in ADT-treated PCa patients., Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted based on searches of EMBASE, MEDLINE, CENTRAL and Scopus databases from inception to March 2023. Participants included ADT-treated PCa patients who received multidisciplinary interventions including exercise, diet, nutrition, pharmacotherapy, bariatric surgery, or psychological/behavioural therapy. Primary outcomes were changes in body composition and MetS, with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) as a secondary outcome. After meta-analysis, results were reported in mean difference, 95% confidence interval and p-value, with forest plots. Additionally, we conducted subgroup analyses to compare the effect of different interventions., Results: Thirty-three articles met the eligibility criteria out of 1443 articles and 28 studies were included in meta-analysis. Of 33 studies, 17 included exercise-only interventions and 10 included exercise + diet/nutrition interventions, but no studies included diet/nutrition-only interventions. All studies employed multidisciplinary approaches in developing or delivering the interventions. Most studies (85%) had low-moderate risk of bias, thus providing good evidence to this review. Overall, interventions had a positive effect on body composition measures; lean mass (LM):0.82 kg (95% CI:0.47,1.17;p < 0.00001), body fat mass (BFM):-0.68 kg (95% CI:-1.12,-0.24;p = 0.002), fat-free mass:0.75 kg (95% CI:0.14,1.37;p = 0.02) and body fat percentage (BFP):-0.99% (95% CI:-1.29,-0.68;p < 0.00001), as well as on MetS; waist circumference:-1.95 cm (95% CI:-3.10,-0.79;p = 0.0009), systolic blood pressure:-3.43 mmHg (95% CI:-6.36,-0.50;p = 0.02) and diastolic blood pressure:-2.48 mmHg (95% CI:-4.19,-0.76;p = 0.005). Subgroup-analyses showed that a combined approach including exercise + diet/nutrition was most effective in improving BFP, WC, SBP and DBP whereas exercise was more effective in improving LM and BFM., Conclusions: In ADT-treated PCa patients, multidisciplinary interventions, especially those combining exercise and diet/nutrition, can improve body composition and metabolic health., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare no conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2023 The Author(s). Introduction: With technical advances, confocal and super-resolution microscopy have become powerful tools to dissect cellular pathophysiology. Cell attachment to glass surfaces compatible with advanced imaging is critical prerequisite but remains a considerable challenge for human beta cells. Recently, Phelps et al. reported that human beta cells plated on type IV collagen (Col IV) and cultured in neuronal medium preserve beta cell characteristics., Methods: We examined human islet cells plated on two commercial sources of Col IV (C6745 and C5533) and type V collagen (Col V) for differences in cell morphology by confocal microscopy and secretory function by glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS). Collagens were authenticated by mass spectrometry and fluorescent collagen-binding adhesion protein CNA35., Results: All three preparations allowed attachment of beta cells with high nuclear localization of NKX6.1, indicating a well-differentiated status. All collagen preparations supported robust GSIS. However, the morphology of islet cells differed between the 3 preparations. C5533 showed preferable features as an imaging platform with the greatest cell spread and limited stacking of cells followed by Col V and C6745. A significant difference in attachment behavior of C6745 was attributed to the low collagen contents of this preparation indicating importance of authentication of coating material. Biopolymers are essential building blocks that constitute cells and tissues with well-defined molecular structures and diverse biological functions. Their three-dimensional (3D) complex architectures are used to analyze, control, and mimic various cells and their ensembles. However, the free-form and high-resolution structuring of various biopolymers remain challenging because their structural and rheological control depend critically on their polymeric types at the submicron scale. Here, direct 3D writing of intact biopolymers is demonstrated using a systemic combination of nanoscale confinement, evaporation, and solidification of a biopolymer-containing solution. A femtoliter solution is confined in an ultra-shallow liquid interface between a fine-tuned nanopipette and a chosen substrate surface to achieve directional growth of biopolymer nanowires via solvent-exclusive evaporation and concurrent solution supply. The evaporation-dependent printing is biopolymer type-independent, therefore, the 3D motor-operated precise nanopipette positioning allows in situ printing of nucleic acids, polysaccharides, and proteins with submicron resolution. By controlling concentrations and molecular weights, several different biopolymers are reproducibly patterned with desired size and geometry, and their 3D architectures are biologically active in various solvents with no structural deformation. Notably, protein-based nanowire patterns exhibit pin-point localization of spatiotemporal biofunctions, including target recognition and catalytic peroxidation, indicating their application potential in organ-on-chips and micro-tissue engineering., (© 2023 The Authors. Research has shown that sensor data generated by a user during a VR experience is closely related to the user's behavior or state, meaning that the VR user can be quantitatively understood and modeled. Eye-tracking as a sensor signal has been studied in prior research, but its usefulness in a VR context has been less examined, and most extant studies have dealt with eye-tracking within a single environment. Our goal is to expand the understanding of the relationship between eye-tracking data and user modeling in VR. In this paper, we examined the role and influence of eye-tracking data in predicting a level of cybersickness and types of locomotion. We developed and applied the same structure of a deep learning model to the multi-sensory data collected from two different studies (cybersickness and locomotion) with a total of 50 participants. The experiment results highlight not only a high applicability of our model to sensor data in a VR context, but also a significant relevance of eye-tracking data as a potential supplement to improving the model's performance and the importance of eye-tracking data in learning processes overall. Spatiotemporal pH monitoring of single living cells across rigid cell and organelle membranes has been challenging, despite its significance in understanding cellular heterogeneity. Here, we developed a mechanically robust yet tolerably thin nanowire waveguide that enables in situ monitoring of pH dynamics at desired cellular compartments via direct optical communication. By chemically labeling fluorescein at one end of a poly(vinylbenzyl azide) nanowire, we continuously monitored pH variations of different compartments inside a living cell, successfully observing organelle-exclusive pH homeostasis and stimuli-selective pH regulations. Importantly, it was demonstrated for the first time that, during the mammalian cell cycle, the nucleus displays pH homeostasis in interphase but a tidal pH curve in the mitotic phase, implying the existence of independent pH-regulating activities by the nuclear envelope. The rapid and accurate local pH-reporting capability of our nanowire waveguide would be highly valuable for investigating cellular behaviors under diverse biological situations in living cells.
