Abstract Air pollution impacts on human health are of serious concern in northern India, and over the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR) in particular. The Kharif crop residue burning (CRB) is often blamed for degradation of Delhi-NCR’s seasonal air quality. However, the concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) remained stable in Delhi, while the fire detection counts (FDCs) from satellites over Punjab and Haryana declined by 50% or more during 2015–2023. We measured PM2.5, carbon monoxide (CO) and related parameters over Delhi-NCR, Haryana and Punjab from a network of 30 low-cost sensors (CUPI-Gs) in a selected period (September–November) of 2022 and 2023. Measured PM2.5 showed lower concentration in 2023 compared to 2022 at Punjab and Haryana sites, in compliance with FDC reductions. Using the CUPI-G measurements, airmass trajectories, particle dispersion and chemical-transport model simulations, we show that the CRB emissions over Punjab contributed only a meagre ~14% to the overall PM2.5 over Delhi-NCR during October-November 2022. This indicates that there exists only a very weak coupling between PM2.5 mass over Delhi-NCR and the CRB over Punjab, highlighting the effectiveness of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in controlling air pollution in the region.

Background Although there is increasing awareness of the health risks of air pollution as a global issue, few studies have focused on the methods for assessing individuals’ perceptions of these risks. This scoping review aimed to identify previous research evaluating individuals’ perceptions of air pollution and its health effects, and to explore the measurement of perceptions, as a key resource for health behaviour. Methods The review followed the methodological framework proposed by Arksey and O’Malley. PubMed and Web of Science were searched. After initial and full-text screening, we further selected studies with standardised scales that had previously been tested for reliability and validity in assessing awareness and perceptions. Results After full-text screening, 95 studies were identified. ‘Perception/awareness of air quality’ was often measured, as well as ‘Perception of health risk.’ Only nine studies (9.5%) used validated scaled questionnaires. There was considerable variation in the scales used to measure the multiple dimensions of risk perception for air pollution. Conclusion Few studies used structured scales to quantify individuals’ perceptions, limiting comparisons among studies. Standardised methods for measuring health risk perception are needed.

Abstract In the region where heat stress has become evident, the elevation of air temperature could reduce yield of heat stress-susceptible crops, such as rice (Oryza sativa L.), which is a major food staple in Asia. In addition to air temperature, atmospheric CO2 is projected to be elevated in the future. To project rice yield in the future, it is necessary to clarify the responses of rice to concurrent elevations of air temperature and atmospheric CO2. In the present study, two japonica rice cultivars with different heat tolerance, Hinohikari (sensitive) and Nikomaru (tolerant), were grown in pots inside open-top chambers and exposed to elevated air temperature and/or CO2. The degrees of increase in the air temperature and CO2 concentration by the treatments were approximately 1 °C and 120 µmol mol−1 (ppm). The study was conducted in Nagasaki, Japan, where heat stress on rice has become evident. Elevated air temperature significantly decreased both whole-plant growth and grain yield. Elevated CO2 significantly increased the growth but significantly decreased the yield. The effects of elevated air temperature and elevated CO2 on growth and yield did not significantly differ between two cultivars. In both cultivars, the main cause of yield reduction by both treatments was reduction in spikelet fertility, which is typical heat stress on rice. The elevated CO2-induced reduction in spikelet fertility could be explained partially by high-temperature regime during flowering due to acceleration of heading and by increase in canopy temperature via stomatal closure in flag leaves. Because elevated air temperature and elevated CO2 treatments additively reduced spikelet fertility in both cultivars, concurrent elevations of air temperature and CO2 caused considerable reduction in grain yield.

The spatial–temporal variations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Akure, a city in southwestern Nigeria, are examined based on multi-year continuous observations using low-cost PM2.5 sensors at six different sites. The average annual concentration of PM2.5 across these sites was measured at 41.0 µg/m3, which surpassed both the Nigerian national air quality standard and the World Health Organization air quality guideline level. PM2.5 levels were significantly higher during the dry season (November–March), often exceeding hazardous levels (over 350 µg/m3), than during the wet season. The analyses of trends in air mass trajectories and satellite data on fire occurrences imply that the transport of dust and accumulation of PM2.5 originating from local/regional open burning activities played crucial roles in increased PM2.5 concentrations during the dry season. Further, site-to-site variations in the PM2.5 levels were observed, with relatively high concentrations at less urbanized sites, likely due to high local emissions from solid fuel combustion, waste burning, and unpaved road dust. Diurnal patterns showed morning and evening peaks at less urbanized sites, accounting for an estimated 51–77% of local emissions. These results highlight the importance of local emission sources in driving spatial–temporal PM2.5 variations within the city and the need for targeted mitigation strategies to address the significant air pollution challenges in Akure and similar regional cities in West Africa.

Abstract Two Japanese rice cultivars with different heat-tolerance, Hinohikari (sensitive) and Nikomaru (tolerant), were grown in pots inside open-top chambers and exposed to ambient CO2 (400 µmol mol−1) or elevated CO2 (550 µmol mol−1) from the beginning of the tillering stage to maturity. The study was conducted in Nagasaki, in the Kyushu region of Japan, where heat stress on rice has become increasingly evident. Although elevated CO2 significantly improved the net photosynthesis and whole-plant growth of the cultivars, there were no significant effects on grain yield, which in turn reduced harvest index. In both cultivars, adverse effects occurred with elevated CO2, such as reductions in spikelet fertility and grain appearance quality, which are typical manifestations of heat stress in rice. During the flowering period, the air temperature was high that spikelet fertility was reduced even under ambient CO2 conditions for both cultivars. These results suggest that, under high-temperature conditions, elevated CO2 could induce or exacerbate the manifestations of heat stress in rice. Because transpiration rate in the flag leaf was significantly reduced by the exposure to elevated CO2, it is possible that elevated CO2 increased plant temperature via a reduction in transpiration during flowering period, although we did not detect significance of the increase in leaf and panicle temperature. To ensure a more confident conclusion, further studies focusing on the effects of elevated CO2 on the determinants of spikelet fertility and grain appearance quality with other cultivars in different year are required.

Abstract The present study investigated the long-term inter-annual, seasonal, and monthly trend analysis and variability of PM2.5 on different times scales over the national capital, Delhi, India, using high-resolution surface observations from six stations during 2007–2021. The non-parametric Mann-Kendall and Theil-Sen slope estimator were used to study the temporal variations. The long-term PM2.5 concentration showed an overall small but statistically significant decreasing trend with an average decrease of −1.35 (95% CI: −2.3, −0.47) µg m−3 year−1. Seasonal trends revealed a significant decreasing value of −3.05 µg m−3 year−1 (p < 0.1) for summer, an insignificant declining trend of −1.95 µg m−3 year-1 for monsoon. Similarly no significant trend detected for the post the post monsoon and winter season. Except for December and January, all months displayed a decreasing trend for PM2.5 concentration. These findings indicate that particle pollution over the city is declining at a very slow rate. A rising trend was found for relative humidity and surface pressure, whereas a declining trend for wind speed and PBLH was observed. No trend was observed for temperature and rainfall. The Pearson linear correlation between PM2.5 and meteorological variables was studied using monthly mean data. Rainfall, air temperature, PBLH, and wind speed showed a negative correlation with PM2.5, whereas surface pressure had a positive correlation and relative humidity displayed an inverted U-shape relationship. The average concentration of PM2.5 in the study period of 15 years remained 125 ± 86 µg m−3 (ranging between 20 to 985 µg m−3) and during winter, summer, monsoon, and post-monsoon seasons it was 174 ± 75, 101 ± 48, 66 ± 50, and 192 ± 93 µg m−3 respectively. Minimum of the monthly averaged PM2.5 concentration was observed in August, while maximum is November. Satellite data of fire events showed that the crop residue burning over the Punjab region had a significant contribution to the peak PM2.5 levels in Delhi during the crop burning period. Government agencies need more strict action plans, especially during winter, to comply with air quality standards.

Abstract The genesis, dynamics, and impacts of a severe dust storm over the central Himalaya during June 13–17, 2018 have been investigated using in situ measurements, satellite data, and model reanalysis. A low‐pressure system over northern India and prevalence of strong winds (∼20 ms−1) triggered the dust storm leading to poor visibility conditions and five‐fold enhancement in the fine particulate matter (PM2.5) over the central Himalaya. Enhancements in Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) were observed to be stronger over the Himalayan foothills site (Lumbini) than that over the Indo‐Gangetic Plain (IGP) site‐Gandhi College. The sharp reductions in Angstrom exponent (α) from about 1.2 to 0.3 indicated the dominance of coarse‐mode aerosols during the dust episode. Model results show an enhancement in the dust from 1.5 to 2.5 Tg (∼70%) over the northern Indian subcontinent, with about half of the contribution from the regional source (Thar Desert). Interestingly, dust storm also had significant impacts on turbulent kinetic energy (2.9–9.6 m2 s−2), vertical momentum flux (0.9–3.3 Nm−2), and sensible heat flux (34.8 to −33.9 Wm−2), suggesting turbulent mixing of aerosols and cooling near the surface over the Himalayas. Our study highlights that the large‐scale dust storms exposed to additional dust and pollution from regional sources can profoundly impact the air quality, heat fluxes, and radiative balance over the northern Indian subcontinent. The study would also help in evaluating the results of climate models and to assess the impacts of dust on the hydrological processes and melting Himalayan glaciers.

This study reports the results of an empirical investigation of Japanese museum curators' perceptions of the role of museums in the school-museum relationship. Findings are based on data collected through semi-structured interviews with seven museum curators located in Aichi and Gifu prefectures and analyzed using M-GTA (Kinoshita, 2003; 2007; 2016). Interviews with seven curators indicate that perceptions of museums' role were formed not only by their relationship with the schools they worked with but also by the interconnectedness of the curators' individual work experiences and their responsibility to the expectations of the local community, including the government and visitors. These findings suggest that curators confront collections based on foundations while coordinating with relationships with schools and considering local community demands. Curator recognizes museums' role as a social space through interactions with schools and communities. In this case study, we observed a museum that faced difficulties in its relationship with the local community, including schools. Therefore, conceptualizing curators as "creators" in social studies classes may help schools and museums establish a closer relationship. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
