Prior research on e-cigarettes' health impacts is inconclusive due to confounding by previous tobacco smoking. Studies of e-cigarette use among people without an established smoking history are informative for this question. A cross-sectional survey was administered across six geopolitical world regions to adults aged 18+ without a history of established cigarette smoking or regular use of other nicotine/tobacco products. Two cohorts were defined based on e-cigarette use: "Vapers Cohort" (N = 491) who used e-cigarettes in the past 7 days and "Control Cohort" (N = 247) who never regularly used e-cigarettes. Frequency of respiratory symptoms (Respiratory Symptom Evaluation Score (RSES)) were compared between cohorts, adjusting for sociodemographics. Tobacco use history and patterns of e-cigarette use was also examined. Respiratory symptoms were rare among both the Vapers and Control Cohorts: 83.3% and 88.4%, respectively, reported "rarely" or "never" experiencing all five RSES items (p = 0.125). The Vapers (vs. Control) Cohort reported modestly more frequent respiratory symptoms (adjusted mean RSES 1.61 vs. 1.43, respectively, p < 0.001); however, this difference (0.18) did not reach the threshold of clinical relevance (0.57). The Vapers (vs. Control) Cohort more often reported former cigarette experimentation (30.8% vs. 12.1%) and former infrequent use of other nicotine/tobacco products (18.1% vs. 5.8%). The Vapers Cohort most often used disposable devices (63.7%) and multiple flavors (approximately 70-80% across primary device type). In this cohort of adults without a history of established combustible tobacco use, e-cigarette use was statistically linked to more frequent respiratory symptoms, though not in a clinically meaningful way. In this study, the garrigues occurring in Apulia and neighboring territories (southern Italy) were surveyed in order to clarify their syntaxonomical arrangement. Many contributions previously focused on this vegetation type, often adopting different and sometimes contrasting treatments from both the nomenclature and syntaxonomical aspects. Our investigations are supported by the multivariate analysis of a dataset containing 292 phytosociological relevés, whose resulting cluster dendrogram highlights the hierarchical relationships between the examined plant communities. Overall, twenty-one associations with several sub-associations were recognized. Some of them are already known in the literature, whereas others are described here for the first time. As concerns the syntaxonomical framework, this vegetation is attributable to the class Cisto cretici-Micromerietea julianae , which in this territory is represented by the order Cisto eriocephali-Ericetalia manipuliflorae and by two alliances: Cisto eriocephali-Ericion multiflorae , grouping the more thermophilous associations usually distributed along coastlines and at low altitudes; and Cytiso spinescentis-Saturejion montanae , including the mesophilic associations occurring in mountain and sub-mountain belts.

Lagoecia cuminoides L. is a very rare and threatened taxon in Italy, never studied before for its ecology and potential use for human consumption. Furthermore, few data are available on the biological activities of its metabolites. A phytosociological study was carried out in the only two Italian sites, and its state of conservation was also evaluated according to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) protocol. The collected plant material was used to make two types of extracts: hot water infusion to evaluate the use of this plant as tea and hydroalcoholic extraction to evaluate the use of it in herbal liqueur preparation. The presence of functional compounds in the extracts were investigated by gas and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry techniques. Ten non volatiles compounds were identified in the extracts, most of which derivatives of quercetin. Thirty-five volatiles compounds were also identified in the plant aerial part and extracts belonging to the chemical class of terpenoids, and among them β-farnesene, thymol, γ-terpinene and p-cymene were the most abundant. The species is characterized by compounds known for their health effects and for its potential applications for human consumption, being this species already used as decoction in some countries of Middle East. Background: Several pretreatment variables have been found to correlate with the clinical outcome of patients treated with NACT plus radical hysterectomy, such as FIGO stage, tumor size, and lymph node status., Methods: A single-center retrospective observational study to evaluate the use of NACT in LACC, particularly in the lymph-node-positive subpopulation. The study, conducted at the Maternal and Child Department of "Cannizzaro Hospital" in Catania, included patients treated between 2009 and 2019. Multivariate analysis was performed to analyze responses to NACT according to clinicopathologic parameters. Kaplan-Meyer disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) curves were generated according to different lymph node status subgroups., Results: A total of 151 consecutive patients were enrolled in the study. Significant independent risk factors for response to NACT were preoperative tumor diameter, parametrium involvement, and lymphoma vascular space invasion (LVSI). T initial diameter at NMR was found to be the independent prognostic predictor for general ( p = 0.024) and lymph node (LND) response ( p = 0.028). Tumors between 2 and 6 cm have a better response to NACT than tumors > 6 cm, and LVSI absence was an independent prognostic factor for LND response to NACT. Survival DFS and OS curves were significant for positive vs. negative pathologic LND., Conclusions: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgery cannot be considered a standard of care in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer, particularly in the subgroup with pre-NACT imaging suspected for LND metastases.

The populations usually attributed to Solenopsisbivonae (Tineo) M.B.Crespo, Serra & A.Juan are investigated from a taxonomical and morphological viewpoint. Within this species complex, four new subspecies occurring in Sicily and Calabria are recognized, such as subsp. bivonae, subsp. madoniarum, subsp. peloritana and subsp. brutia. In addition, a new species from Cyprus described as S.meikleana and S.bacchettae from Sardinia must be included in this group. The synonymy, typification, description, seed testa morphology, chorology, ecology, illustrations, conservation status, and examined specimens for each taxon are provided. Background: The aim of this study was to assess predictors of remission in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), treated with intra-articular corticosteroid injection (IACI) as monotherapy or in combination with methotrexate (MTX)., Methods: A retrospective study of 43 patients diagnosed with different JIA subtypes and followed-up at a tertiary center between 2000 and 2014. We included patients treated with IACI as monotherapy or in combination with MTX at onset or thereafter. We excluded patients treated with MTX as monotherapy or in combination with biologics. Patients were divided into two groups on the basis of assigned treatment. Primary outcomes were disease remission and duration. We performed descriptive analysis, bivariate analysis and cross-correlation analysis between variables. Statistically significant results (P value <0.05) were chosen as variables for multivariate analysis., Results: Median age of onset was 4.56 years (SD±3.85). Median time between disease onset and first IACI was 16.9 months (SD±34.7). We evaluated between time to remission in relation to age, time interval between onset and first IACI, time between onset and start of treatment with MTX, and time between first and second IACI. All of these were statistically significant (P value <0.05) in bivariate analysis, but time between onset and first IACI was the only statistically significant result, using multiple linear regression analysis. Therefore, in our study, 37 patients (86%) of patients went into remission on medication after a median disease duration of 48.8 months., Conclusions: We found that remission was related to time between onset and first IACI. Our predictive model showed that early IACI can be considered as a strong predictor of remission.

The Mediterranean basin is rich in wild edible species which have been used for food and medicinal purposes by humans throughout the centuries. Many of these species can be found near coastal areas and usually grow under saline conditions, while others can adapt in various harsh conditions including high salinity. Many of these species have a long history of gathering from the wild as a source of food. The aim of this contribution is an overview on the most important halophyte species ( Salicornia sp. pl., Arthrocaulon macrostachyum (Moric.) Piirainen & G. Kadereit, Soda inermis Fourr., Cakile maritima Scop., Crithmum maritimum L., Reichardia picroides (L.) Roth., Silene vulgaris (Moench) Garcke subsp. tenoreana (Colla) Soldano & F. Conti, Allium commutatum Guss., Beta vulgaris L. subsp. maritima (L.) Arcang., Capparis spinosa L.) that traditionally have been gathered by rural communities in southern Italy, with special interest on their ecology and distribution, traditional uses, medicinal properties, marketing and early attempts of cultivation. It is worth noting that these species have an attractive new cash crop for marsh marginal lands.

The conservation actions of endangered plant species require a clear knowledge of their habitats. Urtica rupestris Guss. (Urticaceae) is a rare endemic plant species occurring on shady cliffs in the southern-eastern part of Sicily. In the last century, the extreme anthropogenic alterations of Hyblaean plateau have caused the continuous and unrestrained fragmentation of natural habitats and consequently the reduction and disappearance of some plant species. A total of 52 vegetation plots, of which 34 are unpublished, were analyzed in order to characterize the floristic composition of the U. rupestris community. All the relevés were classified using classification and ordination methods. The species is mainly linked to shady and wet rock habitats, and only secondarily colonizes the undergrowth shrubs. According to IUCN criteria, we propose a new risk status for this species and the establishment of a new habitat (92/43CEE) for correct long-term conservation. Finally, a new association, Urtico rupestris-Adiantetum capilli-veneris , which falls within the Polysticho setiferi-Phyllitidion scolopendrii alliance ( Adiantetea capilli-veneris class), was described. This study can provide useful information for the management and conservation of U. rupestris .

Identifying diseases from images of plant leaves is one of the most important research areas in precision agriculture. The aim of this paper is to propose an image detector embedding a resource constrained convolutional neural network (CNN) implemented in a low cost, low power platform, named OpenMV Cam H7 Plus, to perform a real-time classification of plant disease. The CNN network so obtained has been trained on two specific datasets for plant diseases detection, the ESCA-dataset and the PlantVillage-augmented dataset, and implemented in a low-power, low-cost Python programmable machine vision camera for real-time image acquisition and classification, equipped with a LCD display showing to the user the classification response in real-time. Experimental results show that this CNN-based image detector can be effectively implemented on the chosen constrained-resource system, achieving an accuracy of about 98.10%/95.24% with a very low memory cost (718.961 KB/735.727 KB) and inference time (122.969 ms/125.630 ms) tested on board for the ESCA and the PlantVillage-augmented datasets respectively, allowing the design of a portable embedded system for plant leaf diseases classification. A syntaxonomical revision of the Isoëto-Nanojuncetea class for the Sicilian territory is provided. This syntaxon gathers the ephemeral herbaceous hygrophilous plant communities linked to periodically submerged soils, widely distributed in the European, circum-Mediterranean and Macaronesian territories. Within this class, two orders are recognized, lsoëtetalia , with a prevalently Mediterranean distribution, and Nanocyperetalia chiefly occurring in the central-European and Atlantic territories, with scattered and marginal occurrence in the Mediterranean area. The order Isoëtetalia in Sicily is represented by four alliances, i.e., Isoëtion , Preslion cervinae , Cicendio-Solenopsion laurentiae and Agrostion salmanticae , while within Nanocyperetalia three alliances can be recognized, namely Nanocyperion , Verbenion supinae and Lythrion tribracteati . Overall, 32 plant communities are recognized, 11 of which are described for the first time. Each higher rank syntaxa and related associations are examined from a nomenclatural, floristic, ecological and chorological point of view. In particular, the associations were processed using cluster analysis in order to highlight the correlations between them. Regarding the floristic aspects, a checklist of the species occurring in the phytosociological relevés is provided, as well as a new combination concerning Solenopsis gasparrinii , a critical species of the Sicilian flora, is proposed.

While the role of active smoking on response to vaccines is yet to be fully understood, some real-world studies have outlined a possible link between smoking and humoral response to COVID-19 vaccines. Thus, the present rapid systematic review aimed at summarizing the current epidemiological evidence on this association. Following PRISMA and WHO guidelines on rapid systematic reviews, we systematically reviewed published literature on this topic and discussed the findings according to the aim of analysing smoking and its impact on humoral response to COVID-19 postvaccination antibody titres. The search strategy yielded a total of 23 articles. The sample size amongst the studies ranged between 74 and 3475 participants (median, 360), with the proportion of smokers being between 4.2% and 40.8% (median, 26.0%). The studies included in this review analysis investigated the dynamics of antibody response to different type of COVID-19 vaccines. In 17 out of 23 studies, current smokers showed much lower antibody titres or more rapid lowering of the vaccine-induced IgG compared with nonsmokers. This rapid systematic review indicates that active smoking negatively impacts humoral response to COVID-19 vaccines, although the pathophysiologic mechanisms for this association have not been entirely suggested. The results advocate targeted policies to promote tailored health promotion initiatives, which can increase risk perception and ensure appropriate protection measures to be taken to avoid the health consequences of COVID-19 in smokers.
