Angiogenesis, the natural mechanism by which fresh blood vessels develop from preexisting ones, is altered in arterial hypertension (AH), impacting renal function. Studies have shown that hypertension-induced renal damage involves changes in capillary density (CD), indicating alterations in vascularization. We aimed to elucidate the role of the apelin receptor (APLNR), neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in hypertension-induced renal damage. We used two groups of spontaneously hypertensive rats aged 6 and 12 months, representing different stages of AH, and compared them to age-matched normotensive controls. The kidney tissue samples were prepared through a well-established protocol. All data analysis was conducted with a dedicated software program. APLNR was localized in tubular epithelial cells and the endothelial cells of the glomeruli, with higher expression in older SHRs. The localization of nNOS and VEGF was similar. The expression of APLNR and nNOS increased with AH progression, while VEGF levels decreased. CD was lower in young SHRs compared to controls and decreased significantly in older SHRs in comparison to age-matched controls. Our statistical analysis revealed significant differences in molecule expression between age groups and varying correlations between the expression of the three molecules and CD. Background: The aim of this study was to elucidate the clinical impact of the CALLY index in patients with gastric cancer (GC) undergoing gastrectomy., Methods: Between January 2014 and December 2020, 617 patients who underwent gastrectomy for GC at the Osaka City General Hospital were enrolled in this study. The CALLY index was calculated using the following formula: [albumin (g/dL) × lymphocytes (/μl)]/[CRP (mg/dL) × 10 4 ]. We compared the predictive value of four biomarkers [CALLY index, modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR)] for short- and long-term outcomes and focused on the CALLY index to elucidate its clinical value., Results: Receiver operating characteristic analysis showed that the area under the curve for the CALLY index was the highest among the four biomarkers. The 5-year overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) rates in the low and the high CALLY groups were statistically significant. Multivariate analysis identified the CALLY index as an independent factor for OS and CSS but not NLR or PLR. The mGPS was an independent factor for OS but not for CSS in multivariate analysis. The role of adenosine deaminase acting on RNA1 (ADAR1) in colorectal cancer (CRC) is poorly understood. This study investigated the roles and underlying molecular mechanisms of ADAR1 and its isoforms, explored the correlations between ADAR1 expression and the immune microenvironment and anticancer drug sensitivity, and examined the potential synergy of using ADAR1 expression and clinical parameters to determine the prognosis of CRC patients. CRC samples showed significant upregulation of ADAR1, and high ADAR1 expression was correlated with poor prognosis. Silencing ADAR1 inhibited the proliferation, invasion, and migration of CRC cells and induced ferroptosis by suppressing FAK/AKT activation, and the results of rescue assays were consistent with these mechanisms. Both ADAR1-p110 and ADAR1-p150 were demonstrated to regulate the FAK/AKT pathway, with ADAR1-p110 playing a particularly substantial role. In evaluating the prognosis of CRC patients, combining ADAR1 expression with clinical parameters produced a substantial synergistic effect. The in vivo tumorigenesis of CRC was significantly inhibited by silencing ADAR1. Furthermore, ADAR1 expression was positively correlated with tumor mutational burden (TMB) and microsatellite status (p < 0.05), indicating that ADAR1 plays a complex role in CRC immunotherapy. In conclusion, ADAR1 plays oncogenic roles in CRC both in vitro and in vivo, potentially by inhibiting ferroptosis via downregulation of the FAK/AKT pathway. Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute febrile vasculitis that occurs mostly in children younger than five years. KD involves multiple intricately connected inflammatory reactions activated by a cytokine cascade. Despite therapeutic advances, coronary artery damage may develop in some patients, who will be at risk of clinical cardiovascular events and even sudden death. The etiology of KD remains unclear; however, it may involve both genetic and environmental factors leading to aberrant inflammatory responses. Given the young age of onset, prenatal or perinatal exposure may be etiologically relevant. Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, a post-infectious hyper-inflammatory disorder associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, has features that overlap with those of KD. Available evidence indicates that vascular endothelial dysfunction is a critical step in the sequence of events leading to the development of cardiovascular lesions in KD. Oxidative stress and the dysregulation of the nitric oxide (NO) system contribute to the pathogenesis of inflammatory responses related to this disease. This review provides current evidence and concepts highlighting the adverse effects of oxidative injury and NO system derangements on the initiation and progression of KD and potential therapeutic strategies for cardiovascular pathologies in affected children. Apelin is an endogenous ligand for the G protein-coupled receptor APJ and has multiple biological activities in human tissues and organs, including the heart, blood vessels, adipose tissue, central nervous system, lungs, kidneys, and liver. This article reviews the crucial role of apelin in regulating oxidative stress-related processes by promoting prooxidant or antioxidant mechanisms. Following the binding of APJ to different active apelin isoforms and the interaction with several G proteins according to cell types, the apelin/APJ system is able to modulate different intracellular signaling pathways and biological functions, such as vascular tone, platelet aggregation and leukocytes adhesion, myocardial activity, ischemia/reperfusion injury, insulin resistance, inflammation, and cell proliferation and invasion. As a consequence of these multifaceted properties, the role of the apelinergic axis in the pathogenesis of degenerative and proliferative conditions (e.g., Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, osteoporosis, and cancer) is currently investigated. In this view, the dual effect of the apelin/APJ system in the regulation of oxidative stress needs to be more extensively clarified, in order to identify new potential strategies and tools able to selectively modulate this axis according to the tissue-specific profile. Wearing a face mask has become essential to contain the spread of COVID-19 and has become mandatory when collecting fMRI data at most research institutions. Here, we investigate the effects of wearing a surgical mask on fMRI data in n = 37 healthy participants. Activations during finger tapping, emotional face matching, working memory tasks, and rest were examined. Preliminary fMRI analyses show that despite the different mask states, resting-state signals and task activations were relatively similar. Resting-state functional connectivity showed negligible attenuation patterns in mask-on compared with mask-off. Task-based ROI analysis also demonstrated no significant difference between the two mask states under each contrast investigated. Notwithstanding the overall insignificant effects, these results indicate that wearing a face mask during fMRI has little to no significant effect on resting-state and task activations. Hydrogen is an energy carrier that can be a sustainable solution for alternative energy with zero greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrogen storage is a key point for hydrogen energy. Metals provide an access for safe, controlled and reversible hydrogen storage and release. Magnesium, due to its outstanding hydrogen storage capacity, high natural abundance, low cost and non-toxicity is one of the most attractive materials for hydrogen storage. The economic efficiency of Mg as a hydrogen accumulator is limited by its sluggish hydrogen sorption kinetics and high stability of its hydride MgH2. Many attempts have been made to overcome these shortcomings. On a microscopic level, hydrogen absorption by metal is a complex multistep process that is impossible to survey experimentally. Theoretical studies help to elucidate this process and focus experimental efforts on the design of new effective Mg-based materials for hydrogen storage. This review reports on the results obtained within a density functional theory approach to studying hydrogen interactions with magnesium surfaces, diffusion on Mg surfaces, into and in bulk Mg, as well as hydrogen induced phase transformations in MgHx and hydrogen desorption from MgH2 surfaces. Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute form of systemic vasculitis that may promote atherosclerosis in adulthood. This study examined the relationships between KD, atherosclerosis, and the long-term effects of HMG-CoA inhibitors (statins). Candida albicans water-soluble fraction (CAWS) was injected intraperitoneally into 5-week-old male apolipoprotein-E-deficient (Apo E-/-) mice to create KD-like vasculitis. Mice were divided into 4 groups: the control, CAWS, CAWS+statin, and late-statin groups. They were sacrificed at 6 or 10 weeks after injection. Statin was started after CAWS injection in all groups except the late-statin group, which was administered statin internally 6 weeks after injection. Lipid plaque lesions on the aorta were evaluated with Oil Red O. The aortic root and abdominal aorta were evaluated with hematoxylin and eosin staining and immunostaining. CAWS vasculitis significantly enhanced aortic atherosclerosis and inflammatory cell invasion into the aortic root and abdominal aorta. Statins significantly inhibited atherosclerosis and inflammatory cell invasion, including macrophages. CAWS vasculitis, a KD-like vasculitis, promoted atherosclerosis in Apo E-/- mice. The long-term oral administration of statin significantly suppressed not only atherosclerosis but also inflammatory cell infiltration. TiVCrAl films were co-sputtered from TiVCr and Al targets at room temperature. The effects of Al target power on the phase, microstructure, and mechanical, and electrical properties of the TiVCrAl films were investigated. The Al concentration in the films varied from 0 at.% to 70.3 at.% by modulating the Al target power. Results showed that all the TiVCrAl films exhibited a single body-centered cubic phase. Columnar structures became dense and featureless with the increase in Al target power because of the enhanced bombardment with sputtered species and gas ions. Moreover, valence electron concentration decreased when the Al alloys were prepared with TiVCr. Accordingly, mechanical and electrical properties improved. The incorporation of Al increased hardness and reduced electrical resistivity to 12.0 GPa and 164 μΩ·cm, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Metal hydrides are promising hydrogen storage materials. Their extraordinary hydrogen adsorption capacity and selectivity make them ideal adsorbents for hydrogen purification. In particular, Mg-based materials demonstrate ultrahigh adsorption capacity and the starting materials are widely available. However, the utilization of metal hydrides in gas purification is limited due to surface poisoning which accounting for reduction on H2 adsorption. In this study, fluorinated MgNi0.1Fe0.05Ti0.05 alloy was proposed and synthesized by vacuum induction melting and impregnation method. At 300 °C, when the H2 partial pressure was 1.0 MPa, the adsorption capacity was up to 25 mmol/g. However, for the alloy without fluorination treatment, the adsorption capacity decreased sharply after the exposure to CO2 and CO, while the fluorinated sample still kept considerable adsorption capacity. In cyclic breakthrough experiments, the breakthrough time did not decrease over multiple experimental runs for the fluorinated samples. The adsorbent successfully separated H2 from CO2 when the CO2 and CO concentration was up to 50% and 100 ppm respectively. A bench scale test was conducted on a one-bed vacuum pressure swing adsorption apparatus to verity the feasibility of warm hydrogen purification technology using fluorinated MgNi0.1Fe0.05Ti0.05 adsorbent. The hydrogen in the warm mixed gas (30% H2 + 70% CO2) was captured and purified. The hydrogen recovery rate reached 95% while the purity was 95.1%. This study demonstrated one promising method for direct hydrogen separation, which could be possibly applied for separating hydrogen from carbonaceous gas mixtures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Aims: Apelin and its G protein-coupled receptor APLNR (also known as APJ) are widely expressed within the central nervous system and peripheral organs including heart, lung and kidney. Several studies have shown that the apelin/APJ system is involved in various important physiological processes such as energy metabolism, cardiovascular functions and fluid homeostasis. In the kidney, the apelin/APJ system performs a wide range of activities. We recently demonstrated that apelin antagonises the hydro-osmotic effect of vasopressin on aquaporin-2 water channel (AQP-2) expression by reducing its mRNA and protein levels in collecting duct principal cells. The central role of these cells in water and sodium transport is governed by AQP-2 and the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC). The coordination of these channels is essential for the control of extracellular fluid volume, sodium homeostasis and blood pressure. This study aimed at investigating the role of apelin in the regulation of sodium balance in the distal nephron, and more specifically its involvement in modulating the expression and activity of ENaC in collecting duct principal cells. Methods: mpkCCD cells were incubated in the presence of aldosterone and treated with or without apelin-13. Transepithelial Na+ current was measured and the changes in ENaC expression determined by RT-PCR and immunoblotting. Results: Our data show that apelin-13 reduces the transepithelial sodium amiloride-sensitive current in collecting duct principal cells after 8h and 24h treatment. This effect was associated with a decrease in αENaC subunit expression and mediated through the ERK pathway as well as SGK1 and Nedd4-2. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that apelin is involved in the fine regulation of sodium balance in the renal collecting duct by opposing the effects of aldosterone, likely by activation of ENaC ubiquitination.
