Abstract Background With the ongoing prevalence of the emerging variant and global vaccination efforts, the optimal surgical timing for patients with resectable lung cancer in the Omicron-dominant period requires further investigation. Methods This prospective multicenter study involved patients who underwent radical surgery for lung cancer between January 29, 2023 and March 31, 2023. Patients were categorized into four groups based on the interval between SARS-CoV-2 infection and surgery. The main outcomes evaluated were 30-day mortality and 30-day morbidity. Results A total of 2081 patients were enrolled in the study, of which 1837 patients (88.3%) had a confirmed SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis before surgery. Notably, no instances of 30-day mortality were observed in any patient. Patients without prior infection had a 30-day morbidity rate of 15.2%, with postoperative pneumonia occurring in 7.0% of cases. In contrast, patients diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 before surgery had significantly higher rates of 30-day morbidity and postoperative pneumonia when surgery was performed within 4–5 weeks (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) (95% CI):2.18 (1.29–3.71) and 2.39 (1.21–4.79), respectively) or within 6–7 weeks (aOR (95% CI):2.07 (1.36–3.20) and 2.10 (1.20–3.85), respectively). Conversely, surgeries performed ≥ 8 weeks after SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis exhibited similar risks of 30-day morbidity and pneumonia compared to those in the no prior infection group (aOR (95% CI):1.13 (0.77–1.70) and 1.12 (0.67–1.99), respectively). Conclusions Thoracic surgery for lung cancer conducted 4–7 weeks after SARS-CoV-2 infection is still associated with an increased risk of 30-day morbidity in the Omicron-dominant period. Therefore, surgeons should carefully assess the individual risks and benefits to formulate an optimal surgical strategy for patients with lung cancer with a history of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Abstract Two major barriers hinder the holistic understanding of subsurface critical zone (CZ) evolution and its impacts: (a) an inability to measure, define, and share information and (b) a societal structure that inhibits inclusivity and creativity. In contrast to the aboveground portion of the CZ, which is visible and measurable, the bottom boundary is difficult to access and quantify. In the context of these barriers, we aim to expand the spatial reach of the CZ by highlighting existing and effective tools for research as well as the “human reach” of CZ science by expanding who performs such science and who it benefits. We do so by exploring the diversity of vocabularies and techniques used in relevant disciplines, defining terminology, and prioritizing research questions that can be addressed. Specifically, we explore geochemical, geomorphological, geophysical, and ecological measurements and modeling tools to estimate CZ base and thickness. We also outline the importance of and approaches to developing a diverse CZ workforce that looks like and harnesses the creativity of the society it serves, addressing historical legacies of exclusion. Looking forward, we suggest that to grow CZ science, we must broaden the physical spaces studied and their relationships with inhabitants, measure the “deep” CZ and make data accessible, and address the bottlenecks of scaling and data‐model integration. What is needed—and what we have tried to outline—are common and fundamental structures that can be applied anywhere and used by the diversity of researchers involved in investigating and recording CZ processes from a myriad of perspectives.

Seismic imaging and monitoring of the near-surface structure are crucial for the sustainable development of urban areas. However, standard seismic surveys based on cabled or autonomous geophone arrays are expensive and hard to adapt to noisy metropolitan environments. Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) with pre-existing telecom fiber optic cables, together with seismic ambient noise interferometry, have the potential to fulfill this gap. However, a detailed noise wavefield characterization is needed before retrieving coherent waves from chaotic noise sources. We analyze local seismic ambient noise by tracking five-month changes in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of Rayleigh surface wave estimated from traffic noise recorded by DAS along the straight university campus busy road. We apply the seismic interferometry method to the 800 m long part of the Penn State Fiber-Optic For Environment Sensing (FORESEE) array. We evaluate the 160 virtual shot gathers (VSGs) by determining the SNR using the slant-stack technique. We observe strong SNR variations in time and space. We notice higher SNR for virtual source points close to road obstacles. The spatial noise distribution confirms that noise energy focuses mainly on bumps and utility holes. We also see the destructive impact of precipitation, pedestrian traffic, and traffic along main intersections on VSGs. A similar processing workflow can be applied to various straight roadside fiber optic arrays in metropolitan areas.

Abstract Predicting the behavior, geometry, and flow properties of subsurface fractures remains a challenging problem. Seismic models that can characterize fractures usually suffer from low spatiotemporal resolution. Here, we develop a correlative double‐difference time‐lapse full waveform inversion of continuous active source seismic monitoring data for determining high‐spatiotemporal‐resolution time‐lapse Vp models of in‐situ fracture evolution at a shallow contamination site in Wyoming, USA. Assisted by rock physics modeling, we find that (a) rapidly increasing pore pressure initializes and grows the fracture, increasing the porosity slightly (from ∼13.7% to ∼14.6%) in the tight clay formation, thus decreasing Vp (∼50 m/s); (b) the fluid injection continues decreasing Vp, likely through the introduction of gas bubbles in the injectate; and (c) final Vp reductions reach over ∼150 m/s due to a posited ∼4.5% gas saturation. Our results demonstrate that high‐resolution Vp changes are indicative of mechanical and fluid changes within the fracture zone during hydrofracturing.

Lightning-induced seismic waves, termed "lightning quakes," are frequent natural sources in many storm-prone regions. Lightning quakes have been clearly observed in numerous environments by both seismic and acoustic instruments, for example, by distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) array. Despite these numerous observations, the physical nature of lightning quake wavefields detected by ground-based arrays remains poorly understood. The possibility of electroseismic (ES) conversion due to lightning's powerful electromagnetic fields was, until now, unstudied. This investigation uses 3D numerical simulations of acoustic-to-seismic and ES wavefields alongside a novel data-driven azimuthal strain-rate variation analysis technique to robustly reveal the complex nature of lightning quakes. We show that lightning quakes begin as airborne acoustic waves before coupling with the solid earth as air-coupled Rayleigh waves and Love waves that are generated by local sources near the receiver, such as topography or urban infrastructure. These conclusions suggest thunder observations from a DAS array can be used to infer the structure of the near surface around the receiver, but care needs to be taken in understanding the role of local sources. An estimate of the Rayleigh- and Love-wave phase velocities is produced using a novel data analysis method unique to DAS. Furthermore, we demonstrate that electroseismic coupling does not play a significant role in the lightning quake wavefields. Although these simulations do not fully capture the realistic frequency of the electroseismic coupled wavefield, theory suggests that the wavefield is high frequency and thus quickly attenuated in the saturated near-surface soils.
