Mental simulation is an important tool for managers who want consumers to imagine what life would be like if they engaged in positive consumption behaviors. However, research has found mixed effects of mental simulation on behavior. To understand this inconsistency, the authors conduct a meta-analysis to quantify the effect of different mental simulation prompts. This multivariate three-level meta-analysis of 237 effect sizes spanning four decades (1980–2020) and representing 40,705 respondents yields a positive but small effect of mental simulation on behavioral responses. Managers and researchers can amplify this effect by using dynamic visual inductions (e.g., augmented reality), inductions involving both visuals and verbal instructions, and repeated inductions spaced over time (e.g., weekly, akin to real-world marketing campaigns). Inducing simulations repeatedly but massed (e.g., using the same message at the same time across different platforms or retargeting ads) actually reduces subsequent behavioral performance. Cause-related marketing (CM), which links corporate donations to consumer purchases, has ongoing momentum in marketing. As the magnitude and direction of consumers' response to CM are inconclusive, this meta-analysis synthesizes evidence on main and moderator effects from 237 studies. On average, the authors find a moderate effect for attitudinal response (d = .458) and a weak effect for behavioral response (d = .283; both ps <.001), both with high underlying heterogeneity. A multivariate meta-regression on CM moderators grounded along four conceptual pillars—transparency, signals of sincerity, purchase context, and consumers' emotional attachment to CM—shows that attitudinal effects hinge mostly on emotional attachment. Suboptimal execution and poor communication of the donation appeal in particular can even have detrimental effects on attitudes. In addition, various moderators from other pillars play a relevant role. For behavioral outcomes, both emotional attachment and signals of sincerity are equally important. The visual prominence of the donation is the most relevant individual moderator, with only a few others related to the two pillars following at some distance. Therefore, CM requires different priorities depending on corporate objectives. This research further compares the effects of CM with those of discounts and other corporate social responsibility marketing instruments, simulates practical examples, and provides avenues for further research. Aims: To explore the causal relationship between ulcerative colitis (UC) and male infertility using Mendelian randomization method with single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) as the instrumental variables. Methods: Genetic loci closely associated with UC were extracted as instrumental variables and male infertility was the outcome variable in pooled data from the gene-wide association study (GWAS),which was derived from European ethnic groups. The UC data(ebi-a-GCST003045) contained a total sample size of 27432 individuals and 110944 SNPs, and the male infertility data(finn-b-N14_MALEINFERT) contained a total sample size of 73479 individuals and 16377329 SNPs. The SNPs highly correlated with UC were screened from ebi-a-GCST003045(P<5×10−8 as the screening condition, the linkage disequilibrium coefficient was 0.001,and the width of the linkage disequilibrium area was 10000 kb).SNPs related to male infertility from finn-b-N14_MALEINFERT (the minimum r2>0.8,replacing the missing SNPs with SNPs with high linkage, and deleting SNPs without substitution sites) were extracted. MR analysis was performed using MR-Egger regression, the weighted median and the inverse-variance weighted (IVW) respectively, and the causal relationship between UC and male infertility was evaluated by OR and 95% CI, and the Egger-intercept method was used to test for horizontal multiplicity, and the sensitivity analysis was performed using "leave-one-out method". Finally, we used Bayesian Weighted Mendelian Randomization (BWMR) approach to test the results of MR study. Results: A total of 86 SNPs were included as IVs, with OR and 95% CI of 1.095(0.820~1.462)、1.059(0.899~1.248)、1.125(1.002~1.264) for MR-Egger, the weighted median and IVW results respectively, and P value of less than 0.05 for IVW, indicating that a causal relationship between UC and male infertility was causally related. The results of MR analysis combined with BWMR analysis also showed positive genetic causal relationship between UC and male infertility.MR-Egger regression showed an intercept of -2.21×10−3 with a standard error of 0.006 and P = 0.751, there was no horizontal pleiotropy for the IVs of exposure factors. Heterogeneity tests showed no heterogeneity and the results of the "leave-one-out" sensitivity analysis were stable. The objective of this research is to help reconcile the mixed findings on the effect of vape advertising campaigns on consumers' vaping tendency. In a meta-analysis of 43 papers (140 studies, with 77,452 observations; 33% women, 67% men; Mage = 30.5 years), this research shows that in situations where perceived risk is less salient (e.g., social media vs. traditional advertising, ads using picture-dominant vs. text-dominant cues, adolescents vs. adults, nonsmokers vs. smokers), the positive effect of vape advertising campaigns on consumers' vaping tendency is stronger. In addition, this research provides evidence that vape advertising campaigns reduce, rather than increase, smokers' tendency to quit smoking, which is contradictory to the claims made by vaping product manufacturers. The authors discuss the theoretical contributions of those findings and provide specific tools that policy makers can use to combat the influence of vape advertising campaigns. Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the safety, efficacy, and long-term outcomes of endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for treating colorectal adenomas and tumors. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted using databases including PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase. Parameters such as number of patients or lesions, histological diagnosis, lesion size, surgery time, en-bloc resection, R0 resection, severe postoperative complications, and local recurrence were extracted and pooled for analysis. Results: A total of 12 retrospective studies involving 1289 patients and 1850 lesions were included in the analysis. EMR was found to have a shorter operation time by 53.6 minutes (95% CI: 51.3, 55.9, P<0.001) and fewer incidences of severe postoperative complications such as perforation and delayed bleeding (OR = 0.40, 95%CI: 0.23, 0.71, P<0.001). On the other hand, ESD had higher rates of en-bloc resection (OR = 0.15, 95%CI: 0.07, 0.30, P<0.001) and R0 resection (OR = 0.32, 95%CI: 0.16, 0.65, P<0.001). Recurrence after EMR was found to be significantly higher than that after ESD surgery (OR = 5.88, 95%CI: 2.15, 16.07, P = 0.037). Conclusions: The study suggests that the choice of surgical method may have a greater impact on recurrence compared to the pathological type, and that ESD may be more suitable for the treatment of malignant lesions despite its higher rates of severe postoperative complications and longer operation time. An aneurysm is a pathological widening of a blood vessel. Aneurysms of the aorta are often asymptomatic until they rupture, killing approximately 10,000 Americans per year. Fortunately, rupture can be prevented through early detection and surgical repair. However, surgical risk outweighs rupture risk for small aortic aneurysms, necessitating a policy of surveillance. Understanding the growth rate of aneurysms is essential for determining appropriate surveillance windows. Further, identifying risk factors for fast growth can help identify potential interventions. However, studies in the literature have applied many different methods for defining the growth rate of abdominal aortic aneurysms. It is unclear which of these methods is most accurate and clinically meaningful, and whether these heterogeneous methodologies may have contributed to the varied results reported in the literature. To help future researchers best plan their studies and to help clinicians interpret existing studies, we compared five different models of aneurysmal growth rate. We examined their noise tolerance, temporal bias, predictive accuracy, and statistical power to detect risk factors. We found that hierarchical mixed effects models were more noise tolerant than traditional, unpooled models. We also found that linear models were sensitive to temporal bias, assigning lower growth rates to aneurysms that were detected earlier in their course. Our exponential mixed model was noise-tolerant, resistant to temporal bias, and detected the greatest number of clinical risk factors. We conclude that exponential mixed models may be optimal for large studies. Because our results suggest that choice of method can materially impact a study's findings, we recommend that future studies clearly state the method used and demonstrate its appropriateness. People with high levels of intelligence are more aware of risk factors, therefore choosing a healthier lifestyle. This assumption seems reasonable, but is it true? Previous studies appear to agree and disagree. To cope with the uncertainty, we designed a mendelian randomization (MR) study to examine the causal effects of genetically proxied intelligence on alcohol-, smoking-, and physical activity (PA)-related behaviors. We obtained genome-wide association study (GWAS) datasets concerning these variables from separate studies or biobanks and used inverse-variance weighted (IVW) or MR-Egger estimator to evaluate the causal effects according to an MR protocol. The MR-Egger intercept test, MR-PRESSO, and funnel plots were employed for horizontal pleiotropy diagnosis. The Steiger test (with reliability test), Cochran's Q test, MR-PRESSO, and leave-one-out method were employed for sensitivity analysis. We found significant or potential effects of intelligence on alcohol dependence (OR = 0.749, p = 0.003), mental and behavioral disorders due to alcohol (OR = 0.814, p = 0.009), smoking (OR = 0.585, p = 0.005), and smoking cessation (OR = 1.334, p = 0.001). Meanwhile, we found significant or potential effects on walking duration (B = −0.066, p < 0.001), walking frequency (B = −0.055, p = 0.031), moderate PA frequency (B = −0.131, p < 0.001), and vigorous PA frequency (B = −0.070, p = 0.001), but all in a negative direction. In conclusion, our findings reinforce some existing knowledge, indicate the complexity of the health impacts of human intelligence, and underline the value of smoking and alcohol prevention in less intelligent populations. Despite advances in identifying malnutrition at hospital admission, decline in nutritional status of well-nourished patients can be overlooked. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the incidence of hospital-acquired malnutrition (HAM), diagnostic criteria and health-related outcomes. PubMed, CINAHL, Embase and Cochrane Library were searched up to July 2021. Studies were included if changes in nutritional status was assessed with a validated nutrition assessment tool in acute and subacute adult (≥18 yrs) hospitalised patients. A random-effects method was used to pool the incidence proportion of HAM in prospective studies. The certainty of evidence was appraised using the Grading of Recommendation Assessment, Development and Evaluation system. We identified 12 observational cohort studies (10 prospective and 2 retrospective), involving 35,324 participants from acute (9 studies) and subacute settings (3 studies). Retrospective studies reported a lower incidence of HAM (<1.4%) than prospective studies (acute: 9–38%; subacute: 0–7%). The pooled incidence of HAM in acute care was 25.9% (95% confidence interval (CI): 17.3–34.6). Diagnostic criteria varied, with use of different nutrition assessment tools and timeframes for assessment (retrospective studies: >14 days; prospective studies: ≥7 days). Nutritional decline is probably associated with longer length of stay and higher 6-month readmission (moderate certainty of evidence) and may be association with higher complications and infections (low certainty of evidence). The higher incidence of HAM in the acute setting, where nutritional assessments are conducted prospectively, highlights the need for consensus regarding diagnostic criteria and further studies to understand the impact of HAM. Judgments of learning are most accurate when made at a delay from the initial encoding of the assessed material. A wealth of evidence suggests that this is because a delay encourages participants to base their predictions on cues retrieved from long-term memory, which are generally the most diagnostic of later memory performance. We investigated the hypothesis that different types of study techniques affect delayed JOL accuracy by influencing the accessibility of cues stored in long-term memory. In two experiments, we measured the delayed-JOL accuracy of participants who encoded semantically unrelated and weakly related word pairs through one of three study techniques: reading the pairs twice (study practice), generating keywords (elaborative encoding), or taking a cued-recall test with feedback (retrieval practice). We also measured the accessibility, utilization, and diagnostic quality of two long-term memory cues at the time of the delayed JOL: (a) retrieval of the target, and (b) noncriterial cues (retrieval of contextual details pertaining to the encoding of the target). We found that the accessibility of targets was positively associated with delayed-JOL accuracy. Mendelian randomisation (MR) is an increasingly popular method for strengthening causal inference in epidemiological studies. cis-MR in particular uses genetic variants in the gene region of a drug target protein as an instrumental variable to provide quasi-experimental evidence for on-target drug effects. A limitation of this framework is when the genetic variant is correlated to another variant that also effects the outcome of interest (confounding through linkage disequilibrium). Methods for correcting this bias, such as multivariable MR, struggle in a cis setting because of the high correlation among genetic variants. Here, through simulation experiments and an applied example considering the effect of interleukin 6 receptor signaling on coronary artery disease risk, we present an alternative method for attenuating bias that does not suffer from this problem. As our method uses both MR and the product and difference method for mediation analysis, our proposal inherits all assumptions of these methods. Bias from weak instruments may undermine the ability to estimate causal effects in instrumental variable regression (IVR). We present here a new approach to handling weak instrument bias through the application of a new type of instrumental variable coined 'Cross-Fitted Instrument' (CFI). CFI splits the data at random and estimates the impact of the instrument on the exposure in each partition. These estimates are then used to perform an IVR on each partition. We adapt CFI to the Mendelian randomization (MR) setting and term this adaptation 'Cross-Fitting for Mendelian Randomization' (CFMR). We show that, even when using weak instruments, CFMR is, at worst, biased towards the null, which makes it a conservative one-sample MR approach. In particular, CFMR remains conservative even when the two samples used to perform the MR analysis completely overlap, whereas current state-of-the-art approaches (e.g., MR RAPS) display substantial bias in this setting. Another major advantage of CFMR lies in its use of all of the available data to select genetic instruments, which maximizes statistical power, as opposed to traditional two-sample MR where only part of the data is used to select the instrument. Consequently, CFMR is able to enhance statistical power in consortia-led meta-analyses by enabling a conservative one-sample MR to be performed in each cohort prior to a meta-analysis of the results across all the cohorts. In addition, CFMR enables a cross-ethnic MR analysis by accounting for ethnic heterogeneity, which is particularly important in meta-analyses where the participating cohorts may have different ethnicities. To our knowledge, none of the current MR approaches can account for such heterogeneity. Finally, CFMR enables the application of MR to exposures that are either rare or difficult to measure, which would normally preclude their analysis in the regular two-sample MR setting. An interaction in a fixed effects (FE) regression is usually specified by demeaning the product term. However, algebraic transformations reveal that this strategy does not yield a within-unit estimator. Instead, the standard FE interaction estimator reflects unit-level differences of the interacted variables. This property allows interactions of a time-constant variable and a time-varying variable in FE to be estimated but may yield unwanted results if both variables vary within units. In such cases, Monte Carlo experiments confirm that the standard FE estimator of x ⋅ z is biased if x is correlated with an unobserved unit-specific moderator of z (or vice versa). A within estimator of an interaction can be obtained by first demeaning each variable and then demeaning their product. Background: Genetic studies previously reported that variants in TERT-CLPTM1L genes were related to susceptibility of cancer and non-cancer diseases. However, conclusions were not always concordant. Methods: We performed meta-analyses to assess correlations between 23 variants within TERT-CLPTM1L region and susceptibility to 12 cancers and 1 non-cancer disease based on data in 109 papers (involving 139,510 cases and 208,530 controls). Two approaches (false-positive report probability test and Venice criteria) were adopted for assessing the cumulative evidence of significant associations. Current study evaluated the potential role of these variants based on data in Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE) Project. Results: Thirteen variants were statistically associated with susceptibility to 11 cancers and 1 non-cancer disease (p < 0.05). Besides, 12 variants with eight cancers and one non-cancer disease were rated as strong evidence (rs2736098, rs401681, and rs402710 in bladder cancer; rs2736100, rs2853691, and rs401681 in esophageal cancer; rs10069690 in gastric cancer; rs2736100 and rs2853676 in glioma; rs2242652, rs2736098, rs2736100, rs2853677, rs31489, rs401681, rs402710, rs465498, and rs4975616 in lung cancer; rs2736100 in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and myeloproliferative neoplasms; and rs401681 in pancreatic and skin cancer). According to data from ENCODE and other public databases, 12 variants with strong evidence might fall within putative functional regions. Conclusions: This paper demonstrated that common variants of TERT-CLPTM1L genes were related to susceptibility to bladder, esophageal, gastric, lung, pancreatic, and skin cancer, as well as to glioma, myeloproliferative neoplasms, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and, besides, the crucial function of the TERT-CLPTM1L region in the genetic predisposition to human diseases is elucidated. Meta-analysis is a statistical method that combines quantitative findings from previous studies. It has been increasingly used to obtain more credible results in a wide range of scientific fields. Combining the results of relevant studies allows researchers to leverage study similarities while modeling potential sources of between-study heterogeneity. This article provides a review of the core methodologies of meta-analysis that we consider most relevant to sociological research. After developing the foundation of the fixed- and random-effects models of meta-analysis models, this article illustrates the utility of the method with regression coefficients reported from two sets of social science studies. We explain the various steps of the process including constructing the meta-sample from primary studies, estimating the fixed- and random-effects models, analyzing the source of heterogeneity across studies, and assessing publication bias. We conclude with a discussion of steps that could be taken to strengthen the development of meta-analysis in sociological research, which will eventually increase the credibility of sociological inquiry via a knowledge-cumulative process. This study examines the duration of fixed exchange rate regimes to determine the factors that impact the probability of an exit from a peg. Using de facto exchange rate regime classification, we find that duration of a peg is non-monotonic. The results of the semi-parametric proportional hazard model highlight that GDP growth and openness decrease the probability of an exit from a peg, while growing unemployment and increasing claims on government increase the likelihood of abandoning a peg. The negative impact of economic growth on the hazard rate is robust when we use marginal risk analysis and net foreign assets and inflation are found to influence the pegged regime duration. Purpose: To systematically assess the efficacy and side effects of scalp cooling in patients with breast cancer. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in October 2020 across Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus, and four Chinese databases (CNKI, Wanfang, SinoMed, and VIP database). Our review included all randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, and cross-sectional studies. Two authors independently searched databases, screened studies, extracted data, and evaluated each included study's methodological quality and risk bias. Meta-analysis was performed using Stata 15.1 software package and Revman 5.3 software, with estimates of scalp cooling effect and its side effects from pooled using a random-effects model. This study has been registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO, CRD42020216224). Results: In total, 755 articles were screened and data from 27 studies involving 2202 participants were used in the meta-analysis. Studies meeting inclusion and exclusion criteria were three randomized clinical trials, 12 cohort studies, and 12 cross-sectional studies. The effectiveness rate of using a scalp cooling device to protect hair was 61% (95% CI: 55 to 67%, I2 = 88%, P = 0.000). However, scalp cooling therapy's side effects are not be ignored, such as headache, dizziness, scalp pain, neck pain, feeling cold, heaviness of the head, skin rash, nausea, and overtightened strap. Conclusions: This review shows that scalp cooling devices can significantly improve the patients with breast cancer chemotherapy–induced alopecia, but the implications of its side effects provide guide for the implementation of this technology. Participant attrition is a major concern for the validity of longer or complex surveys. Unlike paper-based surveys, which may be discarded even if partially completed, multi-page online surveys capture responses from all completed pages until the time of abandonment. This can result in different item response rates, with pages earlier in the sequence showing more completions than later pages. Using data from a multi-page online survey administered to cohorts recruited on Reddit, this paper analyses the pattern of attrition at various stages of the survey instrument and examines the effects of survey length, time investment, survey format and complexity, and survey delivery on participant attrition. The participant attrition rate (PAR) differed between cohorts, with cohorts drawn from Reddit showing a higher PAR than cohorts targeted by other means. Common to all was that the PAR was higher among younger respondents and among men. Changes in survey question design resulted in the greatest rise in PAR irrespective of age, gender or cohort.
