2. Charge Exchange X-ray Emission Detected in Multiple Shells of Supernova Remnant G296.1-0.5

Abstract

Recent high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy revealed possible presence of charge exchange (CX) X-ray emission in supernova remnants (SNRs). Although CX is expected to take place at outermost edges of SNR shells, no significant measurement has been reported so far due to the lack of nearby SNR samples. Here we present an X-ray study of SNR G296.1$-$0.5, which has a complicated multiple-shell structure, with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) onboard XMM-Newton. We select two shells in different regions and find that in both regions O VII line shows a high forbidden-to-resonance ($f/r$) ratio that cannot be reproduced by a simple thermal model. Our spectral analysis suggests a presence of CX and the result is also supported by our new radio observation, where we discover evidence of molecular clouds associated with these shells. Assuming G296.1$-$0.5 has a spherical shock, we estimate that CX is dominant in a thin layer with a thickness of 0.2--0.3\% of the shock radius. The result is consistent with a previous theoretical expectation and we therefore conclude that CX occurs in G296.1$-$0.5., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

14. Pronounced Cold Crystallization and Hydrogen Bonding Distortion of Water Confined in Microphases of Double Zwitterionic Block Copolymer Aqueous Solutions

Abstract

Advanced materials leveraging water control are garnering considerable interest, with the state of water emerging as a critical aspect of material design. This study explored the impact of microphase separation on water using aqueous solutions of double zwitterionic diblock copolymers, specifically poly(carboxybetaine methacrylate) and poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PCB2-b-PSB4). These copolymers form a mesoscale periodic ordered lattice structure consisting of two distinct aqueous phases. Through differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray emission spectroscopy, it was found that water in these PCB2-b-PSB4 aqueous solutions exhibits pronounced cold crystallization and subtle distortions in hydrogen-bonding configurations.

Abstract

Background: We aimed to quantify the tortuosity of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) and assess its effects on radiological and clinical outcomes in patients with acute MCA occlusions who received mechanical thrombectomy (MT). Methods: This retrospective study enrolled 53 patients with acute ischemic stroke due to MCA M1 or M2 segment occlusion who underwent MT using stent retrievers (SRs). Tortuosity index (TI) was defined to quantify the tortuosity of the MCA M1 segment using the following formula: (actual distance / straight distance) × 100. For each patient, four TIs were measured in the anteroposterior and caudal views for both ipsilateral and contralateral sides to the occluded site (TI-APi, TI-APc, TI-CAUi, and TI-CAUc, respectively) using magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) or computed tomography angiography (CTA). We defined the first-pass effect (FPE) as first-pass mTICI classification ≥2b reperfusion. Results: Patients who did not achieve FPE had significantly higher TI-APi (112 vs. 106; P = 0.004), TI-APc (111 vs. 105; P = 0.005), TI-CAUi (110 vs. 105; P = 0.002), and TI-CAUc (110 vs. 105; P = 0.001) than those who achieved FPE. In multivariable analysis, higher TI-APi, TI-CAUi, and TI-APc were independently associated with an increased rate of unsuccessful FPE (odds ratio (OR) [95% confidence interval (CI)]: 1.25 [1.02–1.61], 1.21 [1.01–1.45], and 1.27 [1.03–1.73], respectively). TI-CAUi, TI-APc, and TI-CAUc were also independent predictors of the occurrence of intracranial hemorrhage after MT (OR [95% CI]: 1.15 [1.01–1.38], 1.14 [1.01–1.38], 1.25 [1.02–1.52], respectively). Abstract

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) modification, also known as PEGylation, has been extensively used to improve the stability of nanoparticles for nanomedical applications. However, PEG exhibits antigenicity in some formulations, motivating researchers to explore alternative polymers. Herein, poly(vinyl ether) (PVE) derivatives are highlighted as promising alternatives to PEG because they form intermediate water molecules that suppress non‐specific protein adsorption and platelet adhesion to the material surface. We prepared a water‐soluble PVE derivative, poly(2‐methoxyethyl vinyl ether) (PMOVE), and utilized it as a surface modifier for gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as model nanoparticles. PMOVE with a thiol terminus was synthesized and confirmed to form an intermediate water molecule using differential scanning calorimetry. Similar to the synthesis of PEGylated AuNPs (PEG‐AuNPs), PMOVE‐modified AuNPs (PMOVE‐AuNPs) were successfully fabricated with an appreciably high density of PMOVE palisades via a thiol‐gold coordination reaction. Similar to PEG‐AuNPs, PMOVE‐AuNPs showed reduced serum protein adsorption and prolonged blood circulation. Additionally, no significant cytotoxicity was observed after incubation of a murine macrophage cell line, RAW264.7, with PMOVE‐AuNPs. Abstract

Abstract: A high-throughput crystallization-to-structure pipeline for structural genomics was recently developed at the Advanced Protein Crystallography Research Group of the RIKEN SPring-8 Center in Japan. The structure determination pipeline includes three newly developed technologies for automating X-ray protein crystallography: the automated crystallization and observation robot system “TERA”, the SPring-8 Precise Automatic Cryosample Exchanger “SPACE” for automated data collection, and the Package of Expert Researcher’s Operation Network “PERON” for automated crystallographic computation from phasing to model checking. During the 5 years following April, 2002, this pipeline was used by seven researchers to determine 138 independent crystal structures (resulting from 437 purified proteins, 234 cryoloop-mountable crystals, and 175 diffraction data sets). The protocols used in the high-throughput pipeline are described in this paper.

Abstract

The validity of dietary variety score (DVS) using a short-form questionnaire has not been investigated using dietary diversity based on a quantitative distribution of consumed foods in older Japanese. We examined the association between DVS and objective dietary diversity using a Quantitative Index for Dietary Diversity (QUANTIDD) based on the quantitative distribution of foods consumed by older Japanese community dwellers. The subjects were 65 older Japanese community dwellers aged 60–79 years. We used two kinds of scores for assessment of dietary diversity. At first, dietary diversity was determined using DVS calculated from answers to a questionnaire about frequencies of intake of 10 food groups. Second, dietary intake was assessed using a 3-day dietary record with photographs, and dietary diversity was determined using QUANTIDD. The relationships between DVS and QUANTIDD were assessed using partial correlation coefficients controlling for confounders. The correlation coefficient between DVS and QUANTIDD was moderate (r = 0.212-0.458). After controlling for confounders, those correlation coefficient between DVS and QUANTIDD remained moderate. The findings suggest that there was a moderate relationship between DVS and QUANTIDD, and DVS using a short-form questionnaire may be useful for assessing dietary diversity in older Japanese community dwellers.

41. Reduced innate lymphoid cells in the endometrium of women with endometriosis.

Abstract

Problem: Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), a recently discovered family of innate immune cells, are responsible for the early immune response, and control both innate and adapted immune system via cytokine secretion. The role of ILCs in endometriosis has not been investigated; therefore, here, we aimed to investigate how the proportion of ILCs changes in endometriosis. Method of study: The percentage of each ILC group in CD45+ cells was examined in the peripheral blood, peritoneal fluid, endometrium, and ovarian endometrioma obtained from women with and without endometriosis (ERB‐C‐1216) using flow cytometry. Results: Specimens were obtained from 19 women with endometriosis and 15 without endometriosis. In the endometrium, patients with endometriosis had lower proportion of ILC2 and 3 compared to control specimens (ILC2:.02±.01% vs.07±.03%; P <.05, ILC3:.31±.14% vs 1.10±.93%; P <.05). There was no significant change in the peripheral blood or the peritoneal fluid between the two groups. Additionally, ovarian endometrioma increased the proportion of ILCs (ILC1:.92±1.12%, ILC2:.08±.08%, ILC3:.70±.39%) compared to the endometrium samples of patients with endometriosis each with P <.05. Immunohistochemistry of IL‐1β and IL‐23, which are ILC3‐inducing factors, showed no significant change in the H‐score of the epithelium of the two groups, but a significant increase was found in ovarian endometrioma. Conclusion: The proportion of ILC2 and 3 was reduced in the endometrium of patients with endometriosis, and ILCs were increased in ovarian endometrioma. 42. Observing the repulsion layers on blood-compatible polymer-grafted interfaces by frequency modulation atomic force microscopy

Abstract

Blood-compatible materials that do not promote reactions in contact with human blood are required to support emerging medical technologies. The interfaces of poly(2-methoxyethyl acrylate) (PMEA), a blood-compatible polymer, and its analogues were investigated by frequency modulation atomic force microscopy (FM-AFM). The grafted polymers exhibited phase separation into polymer-rich and water-rich domains. Thin repulsive layers of hydrated polymer chains were observed in the water-rich domains of the blood-compatible polymers; on the other hand, such layers were not observed for the non-blood-compatible polymers. We report for the first time that FM-AFM enables characteristic repulsive layers composed of hydrated polymer chains in water-rich domains to be observed, which is a significant design factor for blood-compatible polymers.

43. Predictive factors for improvement of symptomatic cerebral vasospasm following subarachnoid hemorrhage by selective intra-arterial administration of fasudil hydrochloride

Abstract

Background Symptomatic cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a significant cause of delayed cerebral ischemia that leads to poor outcomes. Selective intra-arterial administration of fasudil hydrochloride (IAF) has been adopted for its vasodilatory effect on spasm arteries to prevent delayed cerebral ischemia. However, its effect on clinical outcomes and predictive factors for good recovery are not fully understood. This study aimed to investigate the outcomes of selective IAF and identify predictive factors for good outcomes in patients with cerebral vasospasm after SAH.Methods A retrospective study of 36 patients with cerebral vasospasm following SAH who underwent selective IAF at our institution between January 2014 and May 2022 was conducted. We evaluated the improvements in neurological findings before and after selective IAF. Statistical analyses were performed to determine factors associated with good outcomes.Results Selective IAF improved the neurological findings in 26 patients (72.2%). Pre-therapeutic absence of cerebral infarction in more than 1/3 of the spasm artery perfusion area was significantly associated with an improvement in neurological findings (p< 0.0001). Furthermore, there was a tendency for a good outcome when the age was younger (p= 0.093), and the spasm was limited to peripheral vessels (p= 0.065).Conclusion Our study indicates that selective IAF has a promising effect in improving symptomatic vasospasm, except when a large cerebral infarction exists in the spasm artery perfusion area. Early consideration of selective IAF could be recommended once patients experience symptomatic cerebral vasospasm after SAH.

Abstract

The intermediate water (IW) concept has been hypothesized to predict the biocompatibility of polymers and inorganic materials. This study, for the first time, prepared the composite biomaterials of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA)/titanium-doped bioactive glasses (BGT) for bone regeneration by applying the IW concept. The homogeneous distribution of BGT and the mechanical stability of the composites were confirmed using X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, and rheological characterization. In vitro tests with immersion in simulated body fluid showed that titanium doping improved the biomineralization properties. The IW level ranged from 10.4 wt% with 0% titanium doped to 25.6 wt% with 7.5% titanium doped. Cell viability tests on osteosarcoma cells revealed that the growth rate increased with increasing titanium concentration, reaching up to 150%. Based on single-cell force spectroscopy, an appropriate titanium concentration for cell adhesion was estimated to be 5%. The hydrated PHEMA gels with 5% BGT exhibited a high IW level of 19.3% and less hydrophilic wettability than the gels without titanium or with 10% BGT. 45. A case of bilateral vertebral artery dissection treated by bilateral surgical occlusion and low-flow bypass.

Background: Bilateral vertebral artery dissection aneurysm (VADA) is a rare condition that leads to severe stroke. However, the surgical strategy for its treatment is controversial because the pathology is very complicated and varies in each case. Here, we report a case of bilateral VADA that was successfully treated with staged bilateral VADA occlusion and low-flow bypass., Case Description: A Japanese man in his 40s presented with bilateral VADA with subarachnoid hemorrhage. He had only mild headaches without any other neurological deficits. Subsequently, the ruptured left VADA was surgically trapped. However, on postoperative day 11, the contralateral VADA enlarged. The right VADA was then proximally clipped via a lateral suboccipital approach. Furthermore, a superficial temporal artery-superior cerebellar artery bypass was performed through a subtemporal approach in advance to preserve cerebral flow in the posterior circulation. The bilateral VADA was obliterated, and the patient had an uneventful postoperative course during the 1-year and 6-month follow-up period., Conclusion: Bilateral VADA can be successfully treated with staged bilateral VADA obstruction and low-flow bypass. In this case, as the posterior communicating arteries were the fetal type and the precommunicating segments of the posterior cerebral arteries (P1) were hypoplastic, a low-flow bypass was used to supply the basilar and cerebellar arteries, except the posterior cerebral and posterior inferior cerebellar arteries.
