We present a supercontinuum pulse shaping method specifically designed for the generation of polarization-tailored multichromatic femtosecond laser fields. By combining a 4 f -polarization pulse shaper with a custom-made polarizer kit, we independently modulate different spectral bands of a white-light supercontinuum in amplitude, phase, and polarization. The scheme is highly modular, scalable to any number of bands supported by the input spectrum and aims at the physically motivated design of specific laser fields tailored to the relevant transitions and dynamics of the quantum system. The power and versatility of the scheme is showcased in three different scenarios based on atomic multiphoton ionization employing polarization-tailored trichromatic pulse sequences. (1) We demonstrate the creation of an $f_{x(x^2-3y^2)}$ -type free electron wave packet and reconstruct its 3D momentum distribution by a waveplate-free shaper-based photoelectron tomography technique. (2) We utilize the holographic properties of the wave packet to study time-resolved and phase-sensitive ultrafast dynamics of bound states. (3) We investigate the field-free time-evolution of a photoelectron wave packet in the continuum. Our results on an atomic model system demonstrate the great potential of the modular shaping scheme for a wide range of applications on more complex quantum systems, including polyatomic molecules, nanoscopic structures and solids.

Global plastic production exceeded 400 million tons in 2022, urgently demanding improved waste management and recycling strategies for a circular plastic economy. While the enzymatic hydrolysis of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) has become feasible on industrial scales, efficient enzymes targeting other hydrolyzable plastic types, such as polyurethanes (PURs), are lacking. Recently, enzymes of the amidase signature (AS) family, capable of cleaving urethane bonds in a polyether-PUR analog and a linear polyester-PUR, have been identified. Herein, we present high-resolution crystal structures of the AS enzyme UMG-SP3 in three states: ligand-free, bound with a suicidal inhibitor mimicking the transition state, and bound with a monomeric PUR degradation product. Besides revealing the conserved core and catalytic triad akin to other AS family members, the UMG-SP3 structures show remarkable flexibility of loop regions. Particularly, Arg209 in loop 3 adopts two induced-fit conformations upon ligand binding. Through structure-guided kinetic studies and enzyme engineering, we mapped structural key elements that determine the enhanced hydrolysis of urethane and amide bonds in various small molecules, including a linear PUR fragment analog. Ctenophora are basal marine metazoans, the sister group of all other animals. Mnemiopsis leidyi is one of the most successful invasive species worldwide with intense ecological and evolutionary research interest. Here, we generated a chromosome-level genome assembly of M. leidyi with a focus on its immune gene repertoire. The genome was 247.97 Mb, with N50 16.84 Mb, and 84.7% completeness. Its karyotype was 13 chromosomes. In this genome and that of two other ctenophores, Bolinopsis microptera and Hormiphora californensis, we detected a high number of protein domains related to potential immune receptors. Among those, proteins containing Toll/interleukin-1(TIR2) domain, NACHT domain, Scavenger Receptor Cystein-Rich (SRCR) domain, or C-type Lectin domain (CTLD) were abundant and presented unique domain architectures in M. leidyi. M. leidyi seems to lack bona fide Toll like Receptors, but it does possess a repertoire of 15 TIR2-domain containing genes. Besides, we detected a bona fide NOD-like receptor and 38 NACHT-domain containing genes. In order to verify the function of those domain containing genes, we exposed M. leidyi to the pathogen Vibrio coralliilyticus. Among the differentially expressed genes, we identified potential immune receptors, including four TIR2-domain containing genes, all of which were upregulated in response to pathogen exposure. To conclude, many common immune receptor domains, highly conserved across metazoans, are already present in Ctenophora. These domains have large expansions and unique architectures in M. leidyi, findings consistent with the basal evolutionary position of this group, but still might have conserved functions in immunity and host-microbe interaction., (© The Author(s) 2025. Esters are valuable aroma compounds and can be produced enzymatically by Baeyer-Villiger monooxygenases (BVMOs) from (aliphatic) ketone precursors. However, a genetically encoded biosensor system for the assessment of BVMO activity and the detection of reaction products is missing. In this work, we assembled a synthetic enzyme cascade - featuring an esterase, an alcohol dehydrogenase, and LuxAB - in the heterologous host Escherichia coli. Target esters are produced by a BVMO, subsequently cleaved, and the corresponding alcohol oxidized through the artificial pathway. Ultimately, aldehyde products are detected in vivo by LuxAB, a luciferase from Photorhabdus luminescens that emits bioluminescence upon the oxidation of aldehydes to the corresponding carboxylates. This biosensor system greatly accelerated the screening and selection of active BVMO variants from a focused library, omitting commonly used low-throughput chromatographic analysis. Background: Accurate and timely diagnosis of dementia is necessary to allow affected individuals to make informed decisions and access appropriate resources. When dementia goes undetected until a hospitalization or nursing home stay, this could reflect delayed diagnosis or misdiagnosis, and may reflect underlying disparities in healthcare access., Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we used 2012-2020 Medicare claims and other administrative data to examine variation in setting of dementia diagnosis among fee-for-service Medicare beneficiaries with an initial claims-based dementia diagnosis in 2016. We used multinomial logistic regression to evaluate the association of person and geographic factors with diagnosis location, and Cox proportional hazards regression to examine 4-year survival relative to diagnosis location., Results: Among 754,204 Medicare beneficiaries newly diagnosed with dementia in 2016, 60.3% were diagnosed in the community, 17.2% in hospitals, and 22.5% in nursing homes. Adjusted 4-year survival rates were significantly lower among those diagnosed in hospitals [-16.1 percentage points (95% CI: -17.0, -15.1)] and nursing homes [-16.8 percentage points (95% CI: -17.7, -15.9)], compared to those diagnosed in the community. Community-diagnosed beneficiaries were more often female, younger, Asian or Pacific Islander, Native American or Alaskan Native, Hispanic, had fewer baseline hospitalizations and higher homecare use, and resided in wealthier ZIP codes. Rural beneficiaries were more likely to be diagnosed in hospitals., Conclusions: Many older adults are diagnosed with dementia in a hospital or nursing home. These individuals have significantly lower survival than those diagnosed in the community, which may indicate diagnosis during an acute illness or care transition, or at a later disease stage, all of which are suboptimal. As global plastic consumption and littering escalate, innovative approaches to sustainable waste management are crucial. Enzymatic depolymerization has emerged as a promising recycling method for polyesters via monomer recovery under mild conditions. However, current research mainly focuses on using a single plastic feedstock, which can only be derived from complex and costly plastic waste sorting. This study investigated the enzymatic depolymerization of mixed plastics using a dual-enzyme system in a one-pot approach. Employing the polyester hydrolase PES-H1 FY and the (poly)urethanase UMG-SP-2, mixed or blended polymers consisting of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT), and thermoplastic polyester-polyurethane (TPU) were depolymerized into their monomers. Chromatographic quantification revealed a total yield of monomeric products of up to 39.8±4.4 % after 96 h reactions, which was consistent with the weight loss measurements of 40.9±2.5 %. In addition, a modified dissolution-precipitation method was shown to easily blend the three different polymers while improving their degradability. Our findings suggest that using mixed enzymes is a viable method for recycling mixed or blended waste plastics without polymer sorting. Individual monomers can be separated and purified to produce virgin polymers, while their mixture in the hydrolysate can easily serve as feedstock for microbial upcycling into value-added products., (© 2024 The Author(s). Fish early life stages are particularly vulnerable and heavily affected by changing environmental factors. The interactive effects of multiple climate change-related stressors on fish larvae remain, however, largely underexplored. As rising temperatures can increase the abundance and virulence of bacteria, we investigated the combination of a spring heat wave and bacterial exposure on the development of Atlantic herring larvae (Clupea harengus). Eggs and larvae of Western Baltic Spring-spawners were reared at a normal and high temperature ramp and exposed to Vibrio alginolyticus and V. anguillarum, respectively. Subsequently, mRNA and miRNA transcriptomes, microbiota composition, growth and survival were assessed. Both high temperature and V. alginolyticus exposure induced a major downregulation of gene expression likely impeding larval cell proliferation. In contrast, interactive effects of elevated temperature and V. alginolyticus resulted in minimal gene expression changes, indicating an impaired plastic response, which may cause cellular damage reducing survival in later larval stages. The heat wave alone or in combination with V. alginolyticus induced a notable shift in miRNA expression leading to the down- but also upregulation of predicted target genes. Moreover, both increased temperature and the Vibrio exposures significantly altered the larval microbiota composition, with warming reducing microbial richness and diversity. The outcomes of this study highlight the high sensitivity of herring early life stages towards multiple climate change-related stressors. Objective: To compare image quality and diagnostic performance of 3T and 7T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for direct depiction of finger flexor pulleys A2, A3 and A4 before and after artificial pulley rupture in an ex-vivo model using anatomic preparation as reference., Materials and Methods: 30 fingers from 10 human cadavers were examined at 3T and 7T before and after being subjected to iatrogenic pulley rupture. MRI protocols were comparable in duration, both lasting less than 22 min. Two experienced radiologists evaluated the MRIs. Image quality was graded according to a 4-point Likert scale. Anatomic preparation was used as gold standard., Results: In comparison, 7T versus 3T had a sensitivity and specificity for the detection of A2, A3 and A4 pulley lesions with 100% vs. 95%, respectively 98% vs. 100%. In the assessment of A3 pulley lesions sensitivity of 7T was superior to 3T MRI (100% vs. 83%), whereas specificity was lower (95% vs. 100%). Image quality assessed before and after iatrogenic rupture was comparable with 2.74 for 7T and 2.61 for 3T. Visualization of the A3 finger flexor pulley before rupture creation was significantly better for 7 T (p < 0.001). Interobserver variability showed substantial agreement at 3T (κ = 0.80) and almost perfect agreement at 7T (κ = 0.90)., Conclusion: MRI at 3T allows a comparable diagnostic performance to 7T for direct visualization and characterization of finger flexor pulleys before and after rupture, with superiority of 7T MRI in the visualization of the normal A3 pulley., (© 2024. A concept of combining photocatalytically generated hydrogen with green enzymatic reductions is demonstrated. The developed photocatalytic formic acid (FA) dehydrogenation setup based on Pt(x)@TiO 2 shows stable hydrogen generation activity, which is two orders of magnitude higher than reported values of state-of-the-art systems. Mechanistic studies confirm that hydrogen generation proceeds via a photocatalytic pathway, which is entirely different from purely thermal reaction mechanisms previously reported. The viability of the presented approach is demonstrated by the synthesis of value-added compounds 3-phenylpropanal and (2R, 5S)-dihydrocarvone at ambient pressure and room temperature, which should be applicable for many other hydrogenation processes, e. g., for the preparation of flavours and fragrance compounds, as well as pharmaceuticals., (© 2024 The Authors. Importance: Although older adults may use potentially driver-impairing (PDI) medications that can produce psychomotor impairment, little is known about changes to PDI medication use among older adults from the time before to the time after a motor vehicle crash (MVC)., Objective: To quantify use of and changes in PDI medications among older adults before and after an MVC., Design, Setting, and Participants: This cohort study used linked Medicare claims and police-reported MVC data on 154 096 person-crashes among 121 846 older drivers. Eligible persons were drivers aged 66 years or older, involved in a police-reported MVC in New Jersey from May 1, 2007, through December 31, 2017, and with continuous enrollment in Medicare fee-for-service Parts A and B for at least 12 months and Part D for at least 120 days prior to the MVC. Data were analyzed from January 2022 to May 2024., Main Outcomes and Measures: Use of benzodiazepines, nonbenzodiazepine hypnotics, opioid analgesics, and other PDI medications in the 120 days before and 120 days after the MVC. Because each person could contribute multiple MVCs during the study period if they met eligibility criteria, the unit of analysis was the number of person-crashes. The proportion of person-crashes after which PDI medications were started, discontinued, or continued was quantified as well., Results: Among 154 096 eligible person-crashes, the mean (SD) age of the drivers was 75.2 (6.7) years at the time of the MVC. Of 121 846 unique persons, 51.6% were women. In 80.0% of the person-crashes, drivers used 1 or more PDI medications before the crash, and in 81.0% of the person-crashes, drivers used 1 or more PDI medications after the crash. Use of benzodiazepines (8.1% before the crash and 8.8% after the crash), nonbenzodiazepine hypnotics (5.9% before the crash and 6.0% after the crash), and opioid analgesics (15.4% before the crash and 17.5% after the crash) was slightly higher after the MVC. After the MVC, drivers in 2.1% of person-crashes started benzodiazepines and 1.4% stopped benzodiazepines, drivers in 1.2% of person-crashes started nonbenzodiazepine hypnotics and 1.2% stopped nonbenzodiazepine hypnotics, and drivers in 8.4% of person-crashes started opioid analgesics and 6.3% stopped opioid analgesics., Conclusions and Relevance: This cohort study suggests that most older drivers involved in MVCs did not use fewer PDI medications after crashes than before crashes. Qualitative research of perceived risks vs benefits of PDI medications is necessary to understand the reasons why MVCs do not appear to motivate clinicians to deprescribe PDI medications as a strategy to avert potential harms, including additional MVCs.

While plastics like polyethylene terephthalate can already be degraded efficiently by the activity of hydrolases, other synthetic polymers like polyurethanes (PUs) and polyamides (PAs) largely resist biodegradation. In this study, we solved the first crystal structure of the metagenomic urethanase UMG-SP-1, identified highly flexible loop regions to comprise active site residues, and targeted a total of 20 potential hot spots by site-saturation mutagenesis. Engineering campaigns yielded variants with single mutations, exhibiting almost 3- and 8-fold improved activity against highly stable N-aryl urethane and amide bonds, respectively. Furthermore, we demonstrated the release of the corresponding monomers from a thermoplastic polyester-PU and a PA (nylon 6) by the activity of a single, metagenome-derived urethanase after short incubation times. Thereby, we expanded the hydrolysis profile of UMG-SP-1 beyond the reported low-molecular weight carbamates. Together, these findings promise advanced strategies for the bio-based degradation and recycling of plastic materials and waste, aiding efforts to establish a circular economy for synthetic polymers., (© 2024 The Authors. We introduce an extreme ultraviolet (XUV)-beamline designed for the time-resolved investigation and coherent control of attosecond (as) electron dynamics in atoms and molecules by polarization-shaped as-laser pulses. Shaped as-pulses are generated through high-harmonic generation (HHG) of tailored white-light supercontinua (WLS) in noble gases. The interaction of shaped as-pulses with the sample is studied using velocity map imaging (VMI) techniques to achieve the differential detection of photoelectron wave packets. The instrument consists of the WLS-beamline, which includes a hollow-core fiber compressor and a home-built 4f polarization pulse shaper, and the high-vacuum XUV-beamline, which combines an HHG-stage and a versatile multi-experiment vacuum chamber equipped with a home-built VMI spectrometer. The VMI spectrometer allows the detection of photoelectron wave packets from both the multiphoton ionization (MPI) of atomic or molecular samples by the tailored WLS-pulses and the single-photon ionization (SPI) by the shaped XUV-pulses. To characterize the VMI spectrometer, we studied the MPI of xenon atoms by linearly polarized WLS pulses. To validate the interplay of these components, we conducted experiments on the SPI of xenon atoms with linearly polarized XUV-pulses. Our results include the reconstruction of the 3D photoelectron momentum distribution (PMD) and initial findings on the coherent control of the PMD by tuning the spectrum of the XUV-pulses with the spectral phase of the WLS. Our results demonstrate the performance of the entire instrument for HHG-based photoelectron imaging spectroscopy with prototypical shaped pulses. Objective: Wandering behavior in nursing home (NH) residents could increase risk of infection. The objective of this study was to assess the association of wandering behavior with SARS-CoV-2 infection in Veterans Affairs (VA) Community Living Center (CLC) residents., Design: Retrospective cohort study., Setting & Participants: Veterans residing in 133 VA CLCs., Methods: We included residents with SARS-CoV-2 test from March 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020 from VA electronic medical records. We identified CLC residents with wandering on Minimum Data Set 3.0 assessments and compared them with residents without wandering. The outcome was SARS-CoV-2 infection, as tested for surveillance testing, in those with and without wandering. Generalized linear model with Poisson link adjusted for relevant covariates was used., Results: Residents (n = 9995) were included in the analytic cohort mean, (SD) age 73.4 (10.7); 388 (3.9%) women. The mean (SD) activities of daily living score in the overall cohort was 13.6 (8.25). Wandering was noted in 379 (3.8%) (n = 379) of the cohort. The exposure groups differed in prior dementia (92.6% vs 62.1%, standardized mean difference [SMD] = 0.8) and psychoses (41.4% vs 28.1%, SMD = 0.3). Overall, 12.5% (n = 1248) tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 and more residents among the wandering group were SARS-CoV-2 positive as compared with those in the group without wandering (19% [n = 72] vs 12.2% [n = 1176], SMD = 0.19). Adjusting for covariates, residents with wandering had 34% higher relative risk for SARS-CoV-2 infection (adjusted relative risk, 1.34; 95% CI, 1.04-1.69)., Conclusions and Implications: CLC residents with wandering had a higher risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Biocatalysis provides an attractive approach to facilitate synthetic reactions in aqueous media. Motivated by the discovery of promiscuous aminolysis activity of esterases, we exploited the esterase from Pyrobaculum calidifontis VA1 (PestE) for the synthesis of carbamates from different aliphatic, aromatic, and arylaliphatic amines and a set of carbonates such as dimethyl-, dibenzyl-, or diallyl carbonate. Thus, aniline and benzylamine derivatives, aliphatic and even secondary amines could be efficiently converted into the corresponding benzyloxycarbonyl (Cbz)- or allyloxycarbonyl (Alloc)-protected products in bulk water, with (isolated) yields of up to 99 %., (© 2024 The Authors. Age and longevity are key parameters for demography and life-history evolution of organisms. In clonal species, a widespread life history among animals, plants, macroalgae and fungi, the sexually produced offspring (genet) grows indeterminately by producing iterative modules, or ramets, and so obscure their age. Here we present a novel molecular clock based on the accumulation of fixed somatic genetic variation that segregates among ramets. Using a stochastic model, we demonstrate that the accumulation of fixed somatic genetic variation will approach linearity after a lag phase, and is determined by the mitotic mutation rate, without direct dependence on asexual generation time. The lag phase decreased with lower stem cell population size, number of founder cells for the formation of new modules, and the ratio of symmetric versus asymmetric cell divisions. We calibrated the somatic genetic clock on cultivated eelgrass Zostera marina genets (4 and 17 years respectively). In a global data set of 20 eelgrass populations, genet ages were up to 1,403 years. The somatic genetic clock is applicable to any multicellular clonal species where the number of founder cells is small, opening novel research avenues to study longevity and, hence, demography and population dynamics of clonal species., (© 2024. In the last decades, biocatalysis has offered new perspectives for the synthesis of (chiral) amines, which are essential building blocks for pharmaceuticals, fine and bulk chemicals. In this regard, amidases have been employed due to their broad substrate scope and their independence from expensive cofactors. To expand the repertoire of amidases, tools for their rapid identification and characterization are greatly demanded. In this work an ultra-high throughput growth selection assay based on the production of the folate precursor p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) is introduced to identify amidase activity. PABA-derived amides structurally mimic the broad class of commonly used chromogenic substrates derived from p-nitroaniline. This suggests that the assay should be broadly applicable for the identification of amidases. Unlike conventional growth selection assays that rely on substrates as nitrogen or carbon source, our approach requires PABA in sub-nanomolar concentrations, making it exceptionally sensitive and ideal for engineering campaigns that aim at enhancing amidase activities from minimally active starting points, for example. The presented assay offers flexibility in the adjustment of sensitivity to suit project-specific needs using different expression systems and fine-tuning with the antimetabolite sulfathiazole. Application of this PABA-based assay facilitates the screening of millions of enzyme variants on a single agar plate within two days, without the need for laborious sample preparation or expensive instruments, with transformation efficiency being the only limiting factor. Background: To reduce hardware-related complications in coracoid graft fixation to the anterior aspect of the glenoid, a metal-free Latarjet technique was recently introduced. The aim of this study was to compare the primary stability of a classic Latarjet procedure with 2 metal screws to a novel metal-free, all-suture cerclage method. It is hypothesized that fixation of the coracoid graft with 2 malleolar screws will provide higher primary stability compared with an all-suture cerclage technique., Methods: This biomechanical in vitro study was conducted on 12 fresh-frozen cadaveric shoulders (6 matched pairs) with a mean donor age of 80 years (range, 67-89 years). Coracoid graft fixation was performed using a recently introduced all-suture cerclage technique (group A) or a classic Latarjet technique with two 4.5-mm malleolar screws (group B). The conjoint tendon was loaded with a static force of 10 N to simulate the sling effect. Graft loading with a probe head consisted of 6 ascending load levels (10-50 N, 10-100 N, 10-150 N, 10-200 N, 10-250 N, and 10-300 N) with 100 cycles each at 1 Hz. Relative motion of the bone graft to the glenoid was measured using an optic 3-dimensional system., Results: While loading the conjoint tendon with 10 N, no difference in mean displacement of the bone-graft was found between both groups (P = .144). During cyclic loading, a significant difference in relative displacement for both groups was already detected in load level 1 (group A: 2398.8 μm vs. group B: 125.7 μm; P = .024), and this trend continued with the following load levels (P < .05)., Discussion and Conclusion: The study demonstrated that the innovative metal-free, all-suture cerclage fixation technique results in higher micromotion than the classic coracoid graft fixation with 2 malleolar screws. In patients with premature ventricular contractions (PVCs), non-invasive mapping could locate the PVCs' origin on a personalized 3-dimensional (3D) heart model and, thus, facilitate catheter ablation therapy planning. The aim of our report is to evaluate its accuracy compared to invasive mapping in terms of assessing the PVCs' early activation zone (EAZ). For this purpose, non-invasive electrocardiographic imaging (ECGI) was performed using the Amycard 01C system (EP Solutions SA, Switzerland) in three cases. In the first step, a multichannel ECG (up to 224 electrodes) was recorded, and the dominant PVCs were registered. Afterward, a cardiac computed tomography (in two cases) or magnetic resonance imaging (in one case) investigation was carried out acquiring non-contrast torso scans for 8-electrode strip visualization and contrast heart acquisition. For the reconstructed epi/endocardial meshes of the heart, non-invasive isochronal maps were generated for the selected multichannel ECG fragments. Then, the patients underwent an invasive electrophysiological study, and the PVCs' activation was evaluated by a 3D mapping system (EnSite NavX Precision, Abbott). Finally, using custom-written software, we performed 3D fusion of the non-invasive and invasive models and compared the resulting isochronal maps. A qualitative analysis in each case showed the same early localization of the dominant PVC on the endocardial surface when comparing the non-invasive and invasive isochronal maps. The distance from the EAZ to the mitral or tricuspid annulus was comparable in the invasive/non-invasive data (36/41 mm in case N1, 73/75 mm in case N2, 9/12 mm in case N3). The area of EAZ was also similar between the invasive/non-invasive maps (4.3/4.5 cm 2 in case N1, 7.1/7.0 cm 2 in case N2, 0.4/0.6 cm 2 in case N3). The distances from the non-invasive to invasive earliest activation site were 4 mm in case N1, 7 mm in case N2, and 4 mm in case N3. Such results were appropriate to trust the clinical value of the preoperative data in these cases. In conclusion, the non-invasive identification of PVCs before an invasive electrophysiological study can guide clinical and interventional decisions, demonstrating appropriate accuracy in the estimation of focus origin.

Background: This study evaluated a deep learning (DL) algorithm for detecting vessel steno-occlusions in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). It utilised a private dataset, which was acquired and annotated by the authors through their institution and subsequently validated by two blinded readers., Methods: A single-centre retrospective study analysed 105 magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) images using an EfficientNet B0 DL model. Initially, inter-reader variability was assessed using the complete dataset. For a subset of these images (29 from the left side and 35 from the right side) where digital subtraction angiography (DSA) data was available as the ground truth, the model's accuracy and the area under the curve at receiver operating characteristics analysis (ROC-AUC) were evaluated., Results: A total of 105 patient examinations (mean age, 75 years ±12 [mean ± standard deviation], 61 men) were evaluated. Radiologist-DL model agreement had a quadratic weighted Cohen κ ≥ 0.72 (left side) and ≥ 0.66 (right side). Radiologist inter-reader agreement was ≥ 0.90 (left side) and ≥ 0.87 (right side). The DL model achieved a 0.897 accuracy and a 0.913 ROC-AUC (left side) and 0.743 and 0.830 (right side). Radiologists achieved 0.931 and 0.862 accuracies, with 0.930 and 0.861 ROC-AUCs (left side), and 0.800 and 0.799 accuracies, with 0.771 ROC-AUCs (right side)., Conclusion: The DL model provided valid results in identifying arterial steno-occlusion in the superficial femoral and popliteal arteries on MRA among PAD patients. We present chromosome-level genome assemblies from representative species of three independently evolved seagrass lineages: Posidonia oceanica, Cymodocea nodosa, Thalassia testudinum and Zostera marina. We also include a draft genome of Potamogeton acutifolius, belonging to a freshwater sister lineage to Zosteraceae. All seagrass species share an ancient whole-genome triplication, while additional whole-genome duplications were uncovered for C. nodosa, Z. marina and P. acutifolius. Comparative analysis of selected gene families suggests that the transition from submerged-freshwater to submerged-marine environments mainly involved fine-tuning of multiple processes (such as osmoregulation, salinity, light capture, carbon acquisition and temperature) that all had to happen in parallel, probably explaining why adaptation to a marine lifestyle has been exceedingly rare. Major gene losses related to stomata, volatiles, defence and lignification are probably a consequence of the return to the sea rather than the cause of it. These new genomes will accelerate functional studies and solutions, as continuing losses of the 'savannahs of the sea' are of major concern in times of climate change and loss of biodiversity., (© 2024. Objective: Fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is broadly used as a method for assessing prognosis in congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). In addition to the extent of lung hypoplasia, determined by measuring the lung volume, cardiac impairment due to pulmonary hypertension and left cardiac hypoplasia is decisive for the prognosis. The percentage area of left ventricle (pALV) describes the percentage of the inner area of the left ventricle in relation to the total area, whereas the mediastinal shift angle (MSA) quantifies the extent of cardiac displacement. The prognostic value of pALV and MSA should be evaluated in terms of survival, the need for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy, and the development of chronic lung disease (CLD)., Methods: In a total of 122 fetal MRIs, the MSA and pALV were measured retrospectively and complete outcome parameters were determined regarding survival for all 122 subjects, regarding ECMO therapy in 109 cases and about the development of CLD in 78 cases. The prognostic value regarding the endpoints was evaluated using logistic regression and ROC analysis., Results: The MSA was significantly higher in children who received ECMO therapy ( p = 0.0054), as well as in children who developed CLD ( p = 0.0018). ROC analysis showed an AUC of 0.68 for ECMO requirement and 0.77 with respect to CLD development. The pALV showed a tendency towards higher levels in children who received ECMO therapy ( p = 0.0824). The MSA and the pALV had no significant effect on survival (MSA: p = 0.4293, AUC = 0.56; pALV: p = 0.1134, AUC = 0.57)., Conclusions: The MSA determined in fetal MRI is a suitable prognostic parameter for ECMO requirement and CLD development in CDH patients and can possibly be used as a supplement to the established parameters.

The deep pelagic ocean is increasingly subjected to human-induced environmental change. While pelagic animals provide important ecosystem functions including climate regulation, species-specific responses to stressors remain poorly documented. Here, we investigate the effects of simulated ocean warming and sediment plumes on the cosmopolitan deep-sea jellyfish Periphylla periphylla, combining insights gained from physiology, gene expression and changes in associated microbiota. Metabolic demand was elevated following a 4 °C rise in temperature, promoting genes related to innate immunity but suppressing aerobic respiration. Suspended sediment plumes provoked the most acute and energetically costly response through the production of excess mucus (at ≥17 mg L -1 ), while inducing genes related to aerobic respiration and wound repair (at ≥167 mg L -1 ). Microbial symbionts appeared to be unaffected by both stressors, with mucus production maintaining microbial community composition. If these responses are representative for other gelatinous fauna, an abundant component of pelagic ecosystems, the effects of planned exploitation of seafloor resources may impair deep pelagic biodiversity and ecosystem functioning., (© 2023. Purpose: To compare bone substitutes composed of glycated collagen with synthetic micro-sized (1 to 10 μm) hydroxyapatite (OB) vs non-cross-linked collagen matrix with large-particle (250 to 1,000 μm) bovine-derived hydroxyapatite (BOC)., Materials and Methods: The P1 to P4 premolars were bilaterally extracted from the mandibles of 19 Beagle dogs. After 21 days, osteotomies were created in each dog that received OB or BOC and were covered with a collagen membrane or were left untreated. The animals were randomly divided into three groups based on sacrifice time (4, 12, or 24 weeks). The right and left hemimandibles were trimmed to facilitate imaging and histology, and all tissues were placed in 10% neutral-buffered formalin. Microcomputed tomography (MicroCT 40 Scanner, Scanco) was used to analyze bone sections. Bone volume, residual material volume, and bone mineral density were determined for each treatment site (OB and BOC) based on a volume of interest that encompassed the original defect. Additionally, blinded histopathologic assessment (based on the ISO 10993-6 scoring system) and histomorphometry were performed on sections ground to < 100 μm thick and stained with Stevenel's blue., Results: No clinical side effects were noted. No statistical differences were observed for OB vs BOC regarding the mineral volume percentage. Compared to OB, BOC had significantly higher mean mineralization densities at 12 weeks (P < .01), but this difference did not extend to 24 weeks. For residual grafting material, bone maturation, alveolar ridge restoration, and inflammatory response, OB showed a residual amount of bone graft and no statistical differences compared to BOC., Conclusion: Both OB and BOC represent valid treatment options for critically sized bone defects. Both bone fillers outperformed the sham-operated, ungrafted (empty) control, demonstrating statistically improved bone growth and ridge restoration.

Heavy metal pollutants in the environment are of global concern due to their risk of contaminating drinking water and food supplies. Removal of these metals can be achieved by adsorption to mixed-valent magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) due to their high surface area, reactivity, and ability for magnetic recovery. The adsorption capacity and overall efficiency of MNPs are influenced by redox state as well as surface charge, the latter of which is directly related to solution pH. However, the influence of microbial redox cycling of iron (Fe) in magnetite alongside the change of pH on the metal adsorption process by MNPs remains an open question. Here we investigated adsorption of Cd 2+ and Cu 2+ by MNPs at different pH values that were modified by microbial Fe(II) oxidation or Fe(III) reduction. We found that the maximum adsorption capacity increased with pH for Cd 2+ from 256 μmol/g Fe at pH 5.0 to 478 μmol/g Fe at pH 7.3 and for Cu 2+ from 229 μmol/g Fe at pH 5.0 to 274 μmol/g Fe at pH 5.5. Microbially reduced MNPs exhibited the greatest adsorption for both Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ (632 μmol/g Fe at pH 7.3 for Cd 2+ and 530 μmol/g Fe at pH 5.5 for Cu 2+ ). Magnetite oxidation also enhanced adsorption of Cu 2+ but inhibited Cd 2+ . Purpose: Sport climbing may lead to tissue adaptation including finger cartilage before apparent surface damage is detectable. The main aim was to assess finger cartilage composition with T2 mapping in young, active climbers and to compare the results to a non-climbers' collective. A secondary aim was to compare whether differences in cartilage T2 times are observed between older vs. younger volunteers., Methods and Materials: 7 Tesla MRI of the fingers Dig.2-4 was performed using a multi-echo spin echo sequence. Manual segmentation of 3 ROIs at the metacarpal heads, 1 ROI at the base phalanx and 1 ROI at the proximal interphalangeal joint was performed. Included were 13 volunteers without history of trauma who are regularly performing climbing activities as a recreational sport (>20 h/month). These were age-matched with 10 control subjects not performing climbing activities., Results: Mean age was 32.4 years for the climbing group and 25.8 years for the controls. Mean T2 values for the 5 different ROIs were 42.2 ± 7.8 msec for climbers and 41.4 ± 6.8 msec for non-climbers. No significant differences were observed for T2 values between both groups. However, higher age had a significant impact on T2 values for all assessed ROIs (higher age 44.2 ± 9.5, younger age 32.9 ± 5.7, p  = 0.001)., Discussion: This study evaluated the cartilage composition of young, engaged climbers with a T2 mapping MRI technique with the purpose to depict early onset joint changes. Laboratory-based studies on microbial Fe(II) oxidation are commonly performed for 5-10 days in small volumes with high substrate concentrations, resulting in geochemical gradients and volumetric effects caused by sampling. We used a chemostat to enable uninterrupted supply of medium and investigated autotrophic nitrate-reducing Fe(II)-oxidizing culture KS for 24 days. We analysed Fe- and N-speciation, cell-mineral associations, and the identity of minerals. Results were compared to batch systems (50 and 700 mL-static/shaken). The Fe(II) oxidation rate was highest in the chemostat with 7.57 mM Fe(II) d -1 , while the extent of oxidation was similar to the other experimental setups (average oxidation of 92% of all Fe(II)). Short-range ordered Fe(III) phases, presumably ferrihydrite, precipitated and later goethite was detected in the chemostat. The 1 mM solid phase Fe(II) remained in the chemostat, up to 15 μM of reactive nitrite was measured, and 42% of visualized cells were partially or completely mineral-encrusted, likely caused by abiotic oxidation of Fe(II) by nitrite. Despite (partial) encrustation, cells were still viable. Our results show that even with similar oxidation rates as in batch cultures, cultivating Fe(II)-oxidizing microorganisms under continuous conditions reveals the importance of reactive nitrogen intermediates on Fe(II) oxidation, mineral formation and cell-mineral interactions., (© 2023 The Authors. Objective: We aimed to further improve knowledge about volar plate (VP) motion of the finger proximal interphalangeal joint (PIP), by analyzing the dynamic VP shape during a full range of finger flexion using magnetic resonance cinematography of the fingers (MRCF), and to compare the results with anatomical cross sections from cadaver specimens., Materials and Methods: The dynamic sagittal VP shape was visualized with MRCF in a total number of 23 healthy volunteers. The length, angle, and thickness as well as the contact length of the VP to the PIP joint base were measured. Statistical analysis included t-test or rank-sum testing. Anatomical cross sections with differing degrees of PIP joint flexion were obtained from 12 cadaver specimens (fingers) for comparison., Results: Significant positive correlations between PIP joint flexion angle and VP area, length, depth and the VP contact length were found. This matched histologically to fiber rearrangements especially within the loose third VP layer., Conclusion: Our study analyzed the full range of motion dynamic VP shape of the PIP joint using MRCF. Purpose: To compare glycated multilayered membranes (OV) to a commercially available thin-layer membrane (OP) in a lateral ridge augmentation model in dogs. Materials and Methods: This was designed as a three-arm study, where one negative control (empty defect) was compared to two test arms: alveolar bone defects grafted with a mixture of 90% deproteinized bovine bone mineral and 10% porcine collagen, then covered with either a thick- (OV) or thin-layered (OP) membrane. Animals were randomly divided into three groups corresponding to the final sacrifice times of 4 weeks, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks. Sections underwent microCT, histology, histopathology, and histomorphometry. Results: No statistical differences were observed for OV compared to OP regarding the percentage of mineral volume and mean mineral density, amount of bone maturation, percentage of bone graft and membrane remaining in the grafted area, alveolar ridge width measurements, membrane mineralization, or ossification. Test groups presented significantly higher values compared to the empty control for all the endpoints. Conclusions: Within its limitations, this in vivo study highlighted that multilayered thick glycated membranes can serve as effective occlusive barriers for up to 6 months.

Genetically encoded biosensor systems operating in living cells are versatile, cheap, and transferable tools for the detection and quantification of a broad range of small molecules. This review presents state-of-the-art biosensor designs and assemblies, featuring transcription factor-, riboswitch-, and enzyme-coupled devices, highly engineered fluorescent probes, and emerging two-component systems. Importantly, (bioinformatic-assisted) strategies to resolve contextual issues, which cause biosensors to miss performance criteria in vivo , are highlighted. The optimized biosensing circuits can be used to monitor chemicals of low molecular mass (<200 g mol -1 ) and physicochemical properties that challenge conventional chromatographical methods with high sensitivity. Examples herein include but are not limited to formaldehyde, formate, and pyruvate as immediate products from (synthetic) pathways for the fixation of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), industrially important derivatives like small- and medium-chain fatty acids and biofuels, as well as environmental toxins such as heavy metals or reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. Lastly, this review showcases biosensors capable of assessing the biosynthesis of platform chemicals from renewable resources, the enzymatic degradation of plastic waste, or the bioadsorption of highly toxic chemicals from the environment. Objective: To examine prevalence of Alzheimer Disease and related dementias (ADRD) and patient characteristics as a function of comorbid insomnia and/or depression among heart failure (HF) patients discharged from hospitals., Design: Retrospective cohort descriptive epidemiology study., Setting: VA Hospitals., Participants: N = 373,897 Veterans hospitalized with heart failure from October 1, 2011 until September 30, 2020., Measurements: We examined VA and Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) coding in the year prior to admission using published ICD-9/10 codes for dementia, insomnia, and depression. The primary outcome was the prevalence of ADRD and the secondary outcomes were 30-day and 365-day mortality., Results: The cohort were predominantly older adults (mean age = 72 years, SD = 11), male (97%), and White (73%). Dementia prevalence in participants without insomnia or depression was 12%. In those with both insomnia and depression, dementia prevalence was 34%. For insomnia alone and depression alone, dementia prevalence was 21% and 24%, respectively. Mortality followed a similar pattern with highest 30-day and 365-day mortality higher in those with both insomnia and depression., Conclusions: These results suggest that persons with both insomnia and depression are at an increased risk of ADRD and mortality compared to persons with one or neither condition. Screening for both insomnia and depression, especially in patients with other ADRD risk factors, could lead to earlier identification of ADRD. The unique male pregnancy in pipefishes and seahorses ranges from basic attachment (pouch-less species: Nerophinae) of maternal eggs to specialized internal gestation in pouched species (e.g. Syngnathus and Hippocampus) with many transitions in between. Due to this diversity, male pregnancy offers a unique platform for assessing physiological and molecular adaptations in pregnancy evolution. These insights will contribute to answering long-standing questions of why and how pregnancy evolved convergently in so many vertebrate systems. To understand the molecular congruencies and disparities in male pregnancy evolution, we compared transcriptome-wide differentially expressed genes in four syngnathid species, at four pregnancy stages (nonpregnant, early, late and parturition). Across all species and pregnancy forms, metabolic processes and immune dynamics defined pregnancy stages, especially pouched species shared expression features akin to female pregnancy. The observed downregulation of adaptive immune genes in early-stage pregnancy and its reversed upregulation during late/parturition in pouched species, most notably in Hippocampus, combined with directionless expression in the pouch-less species, suggests immune modulation to be restricted to pouched species that evolved placenta-like systems. We propose that increased foeto-paternal intimacy in pouched syngnathids commands immune suppression processes in early gestation, and that the elevated immune response during parturition coincides with pouch opening and reduced progeny reliance. Immune response regulation in pouched species supports the recently described functional MHC II pathway loss as critical in male pregnancy evolution. Seaweeds are colonized by a microbial community, which can be directly linked to their performance. This community is shaped by an interplay of stochastic and deterministic processes, including mechanisms which the holobiont host deploys to manipulate its associated microbiota. The Anna Karenina principle predicts that when a holobiont is exposed to suboptimal or stressful conditions, these host mechanisms may be compromised. This leads to a relative increase of stochastic processes that may potentially result in the succession of a microbial community harmful to the host. Based on this principle, we used the variability in microbial communities (i.e., beta diversity) as a proxy for stability within the invasive holobiont Gracilaria vermiculophylla during a simulated invasion in a common garden experiment. Independent of host range, host performance declined at elevated temperature (22°C) and disease incidence and beta diversity increased. Under thermally stressful conditions, beta diversity increased more in epibiota from native populations, suggesting that epibiota from non-native holobionts are thermally more stable. This pattern reflects an increase in deterministic processes acting on epibiota associated with non-native hosts, which in the setting of a common garden can be assumed to originate from the host itself. Therefore, these experimental data suggest that the invasion process may have selected for hosts better able to maintain stable microbiota during stress. Claims data are a valuable resource for studying Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). Alzheimer's disease and related dementias is often identified using a list of claims codes and a fixed lookback period of 3 years of data. However, a 1-year lookback or an approach using all-available lookback data could be beneficial based on different research questions. Thus, the purpose of this study was to compare 1-year and all-available lookback approaches to ascertaining ADRD compared to the standard 3-year approach. Using a cohort of Veterans hospitalized for heart failure (N = 373, 897), our results suggested high agreement (93% or greater) between the lookback periods. The 1-year lookback period had lower sensitivity (60%) and underestimated the prevalence of ADRD. These results suggest that 1-year and all-available lookback periods are viable approaches when using claims data.

Arsenic (As)-bearing water treatment residuals (WTRs) from household sand filters are usually disposed on top of floodplain soils and may act as a secondary As contamination source. We hypothesized that open disposal of these filter-sands to soils will facilitate As release under reducing conditions. To quantify the mobilization risk of As, we incubated the filter-sand, the soil, and a mixture of the filter-sand and soil in anoxic artificial rainwater and followed the dynamics of reactive Fe and As in aqueous, solid, and colloidal phases. Microbially mediated Fe(III)/As(V) reduction led to the mobilization of 0.1-4% of the total As into solution with the highest As released from the mixture microcosms equaling 210 μg/L. Due to the filter-sand and soil interaction, Mössbauer and X-ray absorption spectroscopies indicated that up to 10% Fe(III) and 32% As(V) were reduced in the mixture microcosm. Additionally, the mass concentrations of colloidal Fe and As analyzed by single-particle ICP-MS decreased by 77-100% compared to the onset of reducing conditions with the highest decrease observed in the mixture setups (>95%). Overall, our study suggests that (i) soil provides bioavailable components (e.g., organic matter) that promote As mobilization via microbial reduction of As-bearing Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides and (ii) As mobilization as colloids is important especially right after the onset of reducing conditions but its importance decreases over time.

Background: COVID-19 has had a severe impact on morbidity and mortality among nursing home (NH) residents. Earlier detection of SARS-CoV-2 may position us to better mitigate the risk of spread. Both asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic transmission are common in outbreaks, and threshold temperatures, such as 38C, for screening for infection could miss timely detection in the majority of residents. We hypothesized that in long-term care residents, temperature trends with SARS-CoV-2 infection could identify infection in pre-symptomatic individuals earlier than standard screening., Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using electronic health records in 6176 residents of the VA NHs who underwent SARS-CoV-2 testing triggered by symptoms. We collected information about age and other demographics, baseline temperature, and specific comorbidities. We created standardized definitions, and a hypothetical model to test measures of temperature variation and compare outcomes to the VA standard of care., Results: We showed that a change from baseline of 0.4C identified 47% of NH residents who became SARS-CoV-2 positive, earlier than standard testing by an average of 42.2 h. Temperature variability of 0.5C over 3 days when paired with a 37.2C temperature cutoff identified 55% of NH residents who became SARS-CoV-2 positive earlier than the standard of care testing by an average of 44.4 h. A change from baseline temperature of 0.4C when combined with temperature variability of 0.7C over 3 days identified 52% of NH residents who became SARS-CoV-2 positive, earlier than standard testing by an average of 40 h, and by more than 3 days in 22% of the residents. Histone deacetylases (HDACs) are important epigenetic regulators involved in many diseases, especially cancer. Five HDAC inhibitors have been approved for anticancer therapy and many are in clinical trials. Among the 11 zinc-dependent HDACs, HDAC10 has received relatively little attention by drug discovery campaigns, despite its involvement, e. g., in the pathogenesis of neuroblastoma. This is due in part to a lack of robust enzymatic conversion assays. In contrast to the protein lysine deacetylase and deacylase activity of most other HDAC subtypes, it has recently been shown that HDAC10 has strong preferences for deacetylation of oligoamine substrates like acetyl-putrescine or -spermidine. Hence, it is also termed a polyamine deacetylase (PDAC). Here, we present the first fluorescent enzymatic conversion assay for HDAC10 using an aminocoumarin-labelled acetyl-spermidine derivative to measure its PDAC activity, which is suitable for high-throughput screening. Using this assay, we identified potent inhibitors of HDAC10-mediated spermidine deacetylation in vitro. Based on the oligoamine preference of HDAC10, we also designed inhibitors with a basic moiety in appropriate distance to the zinc binding hydroxamate that showed potent inhibition of HDAC10 with high selectivity, and we solved a HDAC10-inhibitor structure using X-ray crystallography. We could demonstrate selective cellular target engagement for HDAC10 but a lysosomal phenotype in neuroblastoma cells that was previously associated with HDAC10 inhibition was not observed. Nanocellulose is a sustainable material which holds promise for many energy-related applications. Here, nanocrystalline cellulose is used to prepare proton exchange membranes (PEMs). Normally, this nanomaterial is highly dispersible in water, preventing its use as an ionomer in many electrochemical applications. To solve this, we utilized a sulfonic acid crosslinker to simultaneously improve the mechanical robustness, water-stability, and proton conductivity (by introducing -SO 3 - H + functional groups). The optimization of the proportion of crosslinker used and the crosslinking reaction time resulted in enhanced proton conductivity up to 15 mS/cm (in the fully hydrated state, at 120 °C). Considering the many advantages, we believe that nanocellulose can act as a sustainable and low-cost alternative to conventional, ecologically problematic, perfluorosulfonic acid ionomers for applications in, e. fuel cells and electrolyzers.

Fatty aldehydes (FALs) can be derived from fatty acids (FAs) and related compounds and are frequently used as flavors and fragrances. Although chemical methods have been conventionally used, their selective biotechnological production aiming at more efficient and eco-friendly synthetic routes is in demand. α-Dioxygenases (α-DOXs) are heme-dependent oxidative enzymes biologically involved in the initial step of plant FA α-oxidation during which molecular oxygen is incorporated into the C α -position of a FA (C n ) to generate the intermediate FA hydroperoxide, which is subsequently converted into the shortened corresponding FAL (C n-1 ). α-DOXs are promising biocatalysts for the flavor and fragrance industries, they do not require NAD(P)H as cofactors or redox partner proteins, and they have a broad substrate scope. Atomic and molecular free electron vortices (FEVs), characterized by their spiral-shaped momentum distribution, have recently attracted a great deal of attention due to their varied shapes and their unusual topological properties. Shortly after their theoretical prediction by the single-photon ionization (SPI) of He atoms using pairs of counterrotating circularly polarized attosecond pulses, FEVs have been demonstrated experimentally by the multiphoton ionization (MPI) of alkali atoms using single-color and bichromatic circularly polarized femtosecond pulse sequences. Recently, we reported on the analysis of the experimental results employing a numerical model based on the ab initio solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) for a two-dimensional (2D) atom interacting with a polarization-shaped ultrashort laser field. Here, we apply the 2D TDSE model to study molecular FEVs created by SPI and MPI of a diatomic molecule using polarization-tailored single-color and bichromatic femtosecond pulse sequences. We investigate the influence of the coupled electron-nuclear dynamics on the vortex formation dynamics and discuss the effect of CEP- and rotational averaging on the photoelectron momentum distribution. Background: The impact of suture type on tensile strength, re-rupture rates and infection risk in Achilles tendon rupture repair is not been well established. The aim of this review is to evaluate existing literature on the associated risk of postoperative infection with absorbable and non-absorbable suture materials in Achilles tendon rupture repair., Methods: A systematic review of search databases PubMed; Google Scholar; and OVID Medline was made to identify studies related to complications associated with Achilles tendon rupture repair. PRISMA guidelines were utilised for this review. Meta-analysis was used to compare rupture rates and infections following rupture repair., Results: 12 studies with a total of 460 patients, 230 in both nonabsorbable and absorbable suture groups were included for analysis. Risk of wound complications was significantly higher in patients with non-absorbable sutures (p < 0.001)., Conclusion: Nonabsorbable braided sutures is associated with the highest risk of postoperative wound complications following Achilles tendon rupture repair., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Plastic waste imposes a serious problem to the environment and society. Hence, strategies for a circular plastic economy are demanded. One strategy is the engineering of polyester hydrolases toward higher activity for the biotechnological recycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). To provide tools for the rapid characterization of PET hydrolases and the detection of degradation products like terephthalic acid (TPA), we coupled a carboxylic acid reductase (CAR) and the luciferase LuxAB. CAR converted TPA into the corresponding aldehydes in Escherichia coli , which yielded bioluminescence that not only semiquantitatively reflected amounts of TPA in hydrolysis samples but is suitable as a high-throughput screening assay to assess PET hydrolase activity. Furthermore, the CAR-catalyzed synthesis of terephthalaldehyde was combined with a reductive amination cascade in a one-pot setup yielding the corresponding diamine, suggesting a new strategy for the transformation of TPA as a product obtained from PET biodegradation., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing interests., (© 2022 The Authors.)
