Coastal areas are facing increasing heavy metal pollution as a result of various anthropogenic activities, posing a serious threat to ecosystems. Modeling and understanding the sorption behavior of heavy metals in soils are essential for assessing their mobility and risk in the coastal landscapes. The aim of this study was to examine the adsorption behavior of Pb²⁺, Ni²⁺, and Zn²⁺ by common soil types of the Lower Don and the Taganrog Bay coast in Russia to better understand their potential environmental implications. The soil capacities for heavy metal adsorption and retention were determined using isothermal models. The maximum adsorption capacity and the binding strength parameter for the heavy metals were calculated, revealing significant differences among the soils. Haplic Chernozem emerged with superior values, while Gleyic Solonchak Sulfidic and Umbric Fluvisol trailed the lowest. All soils exhibited a greater adsorption capacity and binding strength for Pb compared to the other metals. The influence of soil characteristics on sorption and retention was also examined. The Pseudo-second-order model provided a more accurate description of the adsorption kinetics of heavy metals by the studied soils. The co-presence of metals in the system affected their sorption by the soils due to competition: soils adsorbed fewer metals but retained them more strongly. These findings are important for developing effective strategies to reduce heavy metal pollution in coastal ecosystems.

In the course of the model experiment, extraction conditions of 16 priority PAHs in subcritical water medium were selected for soils of the chestnut-solonetz complex. For low molecular weight 2-ringed naphthalene and 3-ringed acenaphthene, acenaphthylene, anthracene, phenanthrene and fluorene, the optimal extraction conditions correspond to 10 minutes at a temperature of 200°C. For high molecular weight 4- and 5-ring benz(a)anthracene, fluoranthene, pyrene, chrysene, benz(b)fluoranthene, benz(k)fluoranthene, dibenz(a,h)anthracene, as well as the pollutant of the first hazard class - benz(a)pyrene, the optimal extraction time reached 20 minutes at a temperature of 250°C. For 6-ring benz(g,h,i)perylene and indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene, the optimum extraction time increased to 30 minutes and the temperature to 300°C. When comparing the methods of extraction of pollutants from soils, it is shown that the extraction methods can be placed in the following descending order by the value of the extraction coefficient of priority PAHs from the studied types of soils: ultrasonic extraction (1.05) > subcritical extraction (1.13) > saponification method (1.25). Using multivariate analysis of dispersion it is shown that the efficiency of subcritical aqueous extraction decreases with increasing number of benzene rings in the PAH molecule, as well as with increasing soil salinity in the following order: Gleyic Kastanozems < Endosalic Kastanozems < Kastanozems Sodic < Solonets.

Humus materials are considered complex organic substances generated through a chain of chemical reactions and responsible for many processes in soil that ultimately govern soil health. The structural and functional characteristics of humus depend upon the location, quality, and microbial abundance of the soils. However, the differential characteristics of soil organic matter, seasonal changes, parent rock, plant cover, microbial abundance, and anthropogenic activities majorly affect it. The present study has aimed toward the extraction of humus from five different locations in the Delhi region of India and their characteristics were investigated through elemental analysis, Fourier Transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and UV spectroscopy. The results showed that there was a higher degree of unsaturation detected in the Forest soil sample. The results of FT-IR showed the presence of characteristic peaks of humus in the samples however the intensity of bands was weak in sample disposable site soil sample and clayey soil sample due to the variation in soil physicochemical properties. The study also aimed to assess the growth of Oryza sativa (rice) plants observed in the hydroponics system. The significant finding was observed with the forest soil sample in 1000 mgL-1 and treatment in which the growth was minimum in clayey soil of 1500 mgL-1. Our investigation infers the diverse nature of humus in different soils and its implications for plant growth, highlighting the importance of understanding soil organic matter for sustainable agriculture and soil health management.

The research investigates the transformative impact of nano-zinc oxide and iron oxide formulations on prolonging the shelf life of strawberries. A total of 16 distinct treatments were applied through foliar application, and a nano-zinc oxide (ZnO) and iron oxide (FeO) formulations were administered. Each square meter received 42 ml of the solution in triplicate, ensuring a comprehensive exploration of the formulations' impact on shelf-life enhancement. Notably, the combined application of ZnO and FeO NPs at 150 mg/l, specifically T15 (Z3F3), exhibited superior effectiveness in preserving the crop. T11 (Z2F2), featuring 100 mg/l ZnO and 100 mg/l FeO, closely trailed T15, showcasing significant improvements in parameters such as ascorbic acid content (49.66 mg/100g), and anthocyanin content (39.82 mg/l), etc. at nine days after harvesting. Besides this, TSS (7.25 obrix) in T14 and acidity (0.65%) in T5 and T9 at nine days intervals. These findings advancing the strawberry preservation methods in the agriculture and food industries and establishes the superiority of simultaneous applications of nano-formulations in T15 (150 mg/l ZnO + 150 mg/l FeO) and T11 (100 mg/l ZnO + 100 mg/l FeO). These formulations emerge as optimal solutions for extending the shelf life of strawberry fruits, particularly the Cv. Winter Dawn under Punjab Region, India, and could implement in similar climatic condition around world.

Analytical techniques for elemental analysis in the soil-plant system have significance importance, especially emerging techniques such as synchrotron radiation (SR). Improved techniques allow samples to be examined in a non-invasive manner at high speed and resolution, resulting in better sample data. By applying various analytical techniques based on SR, it is possible to gather different information about the structure of the studied samples. In mining ecology, such techniques are widely used in assessing heavy metal-polluted sites, i.e., overburden dumps and areas around operating and mothballed mines. The present review elaborated insights into different analytical techniques for applying SR in plant-soil samples. The review also compared traditional research techniques with SR-based emerging and improved techniques. The need to use SR techniques for the complex diagnostics of sample structures to study their elemental and phase composition is substantiated. Using an integrated approach with SR, we can study the dynamics and speciation of HMs with carrier phases and uncover the mechanisms underlying the interactions between the adsorption centers of minerals, organic components, and heavy metals. It also improves the efficiency and accuracy of analysis and broadens the range of information obtained, which could lead to a more precise analysis of samples.

The main regularities of pollutant distribution through the soil profile were established based on the analysis of the content of 15 priority PAHs in 29 soil sections of different soil types located in the coastal zone of the Lower Don and Taganrog Bay with different anthropogenic loads. It was shown that the total content of PAHs in the 0-20 cm layer of soils of coastal territories varies from 172 µg kg-1 to 16006 µg kg-1. In addition, according to the total pollution indicator, (Zc) determines the level of soil pollution, which varies from "not polluted" to "extremely polluted". The influence of pollution sources falls on the 0-20 cm layer of soils of different types and is especially pronounced for subordinate landscapes. With increasing sampling depth, the total PAH content decreases with the redistribution of individual compounds of the PAH group towards the dominance of low molecular weight and 4-ring compounds in the composition of the sum of 15 PAHs and depends largely on the content of organic matter and soil pH. Based on the cluster analysis results, the main factor determining the profile distribution of PAHs is the type of pollutant origin source and its intensity.

Soil plays a pivotal role in ecosystem health and agricultural productivity. This study focuses on a critical region for soil research, Kalmykia's central dry steppe zone in southern Russia, characterized by arid conditions and unique challenges. Our investigation aimed to evaluate the current state of soil properties and assess trace element accumulation within this environment. The region's distinctive characteristics, including being home to Europe's first desert, present a complex scenario for soil conservation and management. A thorough analysis of key physicochemical properties, including organic matter content, soil texture, pH levels, and the concentrations of trace elements (V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, and Pb) using established methodologies, was conducted. Our findings revealed several crucial insights into the soil conditions of this arid region. Soil samples predominantly consisted of Haplic Kastanozems Sodic, characterized by low organic carbon content (0.3-1.9%). Soil texture analysis indicated a predominantly light and medium loamy granulometric composition with a prevalence of sandy fractions. Soil pH values ranged from neutral (pH = 7.6-7.9) to slightly alkaline (pH = 8.0-8.4). Furthermore, the study provided the first assessment of soil conditions in residential areas of the Caspian Lowland's arid region. Notably, trace element analysis showed elevated concentrations of several metals, with Sr having the highest levels. Co, Cr, and Zn concentrations did not significantly increase compared to the background values. The results of this soil fertility evaluation hold significance for soil restoration and conservation efforts in this unique and fragile ecosystem. In conclusion, this study underscores the urgent need for soil monitoring and management practices to address soil degradation and desertification driven by overgrazing and erosion. Understanding the physicochemical properties and trace element dynamics in arid regions is essential for developing strategies to restore and conserve these valuable soils.

DFOS (distributed fiber-optic sensing) technology has shown the potential to increase the accuracy of measurement after years of development and experimenting in geoengineering monitoring. To better understand the development of DFOS technology and its contribution to geoengineering, an objective and data-driven review of the development process of DFOS technology in construction was completed. The review was accomplished by using text mining methods on the Web of Science, covering a wide range of relevant data, including 3970 articles from 1989 to 2023. The results indicate that DFOS technology research demonstrates the typical characteristics of multi-author, multi-country, and multi-institution collaborations, spanning various research fields. Over the past 35 years, the number of published articles has exhibited exponential growth, with China making significant contributions and leading in terms of its total publication growth rate, which has been higher than that of the United States since 2016. In the analysis of author keywords, emerging technologies, such as machine learning and distributed acoustic sensing, have garnered attention. The findings contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the development, impact, and future trends of DFOS technology in geotechnical engineering, offering valuable insights for researchers, scholars, and students in the field and inspiring new approaches for research methods in this domain.

The PAHs transformation in the soils of the coal mining enterprises impact zones and thermal power plants remains poorly studied. In turn, coal mining can be considered as a primary cycle in the production of electricity. One of the main sources of negative environmental impact is the coal mining industry located on the territory of the upland in the south of the East European Plain. The features of PAHs accumulation in the soils of fuel and energy enterprises have been studied on the example of mines impact zones with different service life and the current coal-fired power plant. It was established that, regardless of the period and intensity of the emission source, as well as its current status, the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) content in the soils of the impact zones was significantly higher than in the soils of the background territory. The content of low molecular and high molecular weight PAHs in the impact zones soils differed depending on the land use type, as well as the period and intensity of an industrial effect type. The pollutants content of in the soils of all considered impact zones significantly exceeded the background values and according to the low molecular weight PAHs content in the soils, they formed the following decreasing series: Mayskiy ≥ Ayutinsky > Novoshahtinsk > Power station > Background. According the high molecular weight PAHs content, the series changed to: Novoshahtinsk >Mayskiy ≥ Ayutinsky > Power station > Background. Soil pollution markers for enterprises of the fuel and energy complex were identified as pyrene and chrysene, which are part of coal, formed from the hydrocarbon sources. The influence of the power plant was accompanied by the benzo(g,h,i)perylene concentration increase.

Pseudomonas bacteria are renowned for their remarkable capacity to synthesize antibiotics, namely mupirocin, gluconic acid, pyrrolnitrin, and 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (DAPG). While these substances are extensively employed in agricultural biotechnology to safeguard plants against harmful bacteria and fungi, their potential for human medicine and healthcare remains highly promising for common science. However, the challenge of obtaining stable producers that yield higher quantities of these antibiotics continues to be a pertinent concern in modern biotechnology. Although the interest in antibiotics of Pseudomonas bacteria has persisted over the past century, many uncertainties still surround the regulation of the biosynthetic pathways of these compounds. Thus, the present review comprehensively studies the genetic organization and regulation of the biosynthesis of these antibiotics and provides a comprehensive summary of the genetic organization of antibiotic biosynthesis pathways in pseudomonas strains, appealing to both molecular biologists and biotechnologists. In addition, attention is also paid to the application of antibiotics in plant protection.

Land degradation especially as a result of the rapid increase in demand and pressure in the population, have emerged as one of the most important problems. Degradation leads to the loss of biological and economic productivity due to the fact that the soil loses its functional properties, which are one of the most important elements of the terrestrial ecosystem. Combined with excessive biophysical and socio-economic damage in arid areas, land degradation causes irreversible consequences leading to desertification. Thus, land degradation is an environmental threat not only on a local or regional scale, but also on a continental or even global scale. The change in the state of soils as a result of anthropogenic impact and climatic changes determines the relevance of conducting a study of the soils of the Republic of Kalmykia. Endosalic Calcisols of sandy loam and sandy granulometric composition predominate in the structure of the soil cover of the southern part of the Caspian lowland, significant areas are occupied by sands. More than 70% of agricultural land is subject to wind erosion. Salt marshes are widely distributed.

Abstract For effective soil remediation, it is vital to apply environmentally friendly and cost-effective technologies following the notion of green sustainable development. In the context of recycling waste and preserving nutrients in the soil, biochar production and utilization have become widespread. There is an urgent need to develop high-efficiency biochar-based sorbents for pollution removal from soil. This research examined the efficacy of soil remediation using biochar made from three distinct sources: wood, and agricultural residues (sunflower and rice husks). The generated biochars were characterized by SEM/SCEM, XRF, XRD, FTIR, BET Specific Surface Area, and elemental compositions. The presence of hydroxyl and phenolic functional groups and esters in wood, sunflower and rice husk biochar were noted. The total volume of pores was in the following descending order: rice husk > wood > sunflower husk. However, wood biochar had more thermally stable, heterogeneous, irregular-shaped pores than other samples. Adsorption of soil-heavy metals into biochars differed depending on the type of adsorbent, according to data derived from distribution coefficients, sorption degree, Freundlich, and Langmuir adsorption models. The input of biochars to Calcaric Fluvic Arenosol increased its adsorption ability under contamination by Cu(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II) in the following order: wood > rice husk > sunflower husk. The addition of sunflower husk, wood, and rice husk biochar to the soil led to an increase in the removal efficiency of metals in all cases (more than 77%). The increase in the percentage adsorption of Cu and Pb was 9–19%, of Zn was 11–21%. The present results indicated that all biochars functioned well as an absorbent for removing heavy metals from soils. The tailor-made surface chemistry properties and the high sorption efficiency of the biochar from sunflower and rice husks could potentially be used for soil remediation.

In modern economic and industrial realities, agricultural lands are often located next to industrial areas, which leads to soil contamination and, as a result, agricultural products with pollutants. Pollution of soils and plants by several pollutants of various nature has acquired huge proportions. There is a threat of migration of dangerous ecotoxicants, including heavy metals and benz[a]pyrene, one of the main persistent compounds, a marker of PAH soil contamination, along trophic chains that may be dangerous to public health. This study examines the use of various types of mineral sorbents (Tripoli, Brown coal, Diatomite) and mineral sorbents (Biochar, Granular activated coal) to reduce the toxic effects of pollutants on the sources of anthropogenic emissions of heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons adjacent to the sources. Using scanning electron microscopy, it was found that the sorbents have a high specific surface area. With the help of phytotesting in combined contaminated soils, the optimal dose of sorbent administration was determined at the level of 1% and 2% for various pollution variants. In addition, the analyzed sorbents are ordered by the effect of reducing the phytotoxicity of combined soil pollution. It was found that the introduction of sorbents into contaminated soil contributed to an increase in the morphometric parameters of the test culture - barley (Hordeum sativum distichum), which confirms the effectiveness of the sorption remediation of jointly contaminated soils with heavy metals and benz(a)pyrene.

Soil standing may be studied indirectly using remote sensing through an assessment of state of the plants growing on it. The ability to evaluate the physiological state of plants using the hyperspectral survey data also provides a tool to characterize vegetation cover and individual samples of woody plants. In the present work the hyperspectral imaging was applied to identify the species of the woody plants evaluating the differences in their physiological state. Samples of Quercus macrocarpa Michx., Q. robur L. and Q. rubra L. were studied using Cubert UHD-185 hyperspectral camera over five periods with an interval of 7-10 days. In total, 80 vegetation indices (VIs) were calculated. Sample sets of values of VIs were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), principal component analysis (PCA), decision tree (DT), random forest (RF) methods. It was shown using the ANOVA, that the following VIs are the most dependent on the species affiliation of the samples: Carter2, Carter3, Carter4, CI, CI2, CRI4, Datt, Datt2, GMI2, Maccioni, mSR2, MTCI, NDVI2, OSAVI2, PRI, REP_Li, SR1, SR2, SR6, Vogelmann, Vogelmann2, Vogelmann4. VIs that are effective for the separation of oak species, were also revealed using the DT method – these are Boochs, Boochs2, CARI, CRI1, CRI3, D1, D2, Datt, Datt3; Datt4, Datt5, DD, DDn, EGFN, Gitelson, MCARI2, MTCI, MTVI, NDVI3, PRI, PSND, PSRI, RDVI, REP_Li, SPVI, SR4, Vogelmann, Vogelmann2, Vogelmann3. PCA and RF methods reliably differentiated Q. rubra from Q. robur and Q. macrocarpa. Q. rubra, unlike other species, was under stress from the impact of soil pH against the background of drought. This was manifested in leaf chlorosis. Influence of the environmental stress factors on the reliability and efficiency of species identification was demonstrated. Q. robur and Q. macrocarpawere were poorly separated by PCA and RF methods all over the five periods of the experiment.

Soil Zn amended is an efficient agronomical Zn biofortification approach in rice. However, it is still need to know if higher rate of Zn over recommended dose can influence other essential nutrient uptake, high accumulation of Zn in soils and health risk for human consumption. This study was conducted by taking ten treatments (T1: control, T2: RDF, T3: RDF + 1.25 mg kg-1, T4: RDF + 2.5 mg kg-1, T5: RDF + 3.75 mg kg-1, T6: RDF + 5 mg kg-1, T7: RDF + 6.25 mg kg-1, T8: RDF + 7.5 mg kg-1, T9: RDF + 8.75 mg kg-1, T10: RDF + 10 mg kg-1) on hybrid rice in Zn (1.20 mg kg-1) enriched soil. The findings have shown that 6.25 mg kg-1 Zn application significantly increased crop growth and grain concentrations of N, K, Zn, Cu and Fe by 71.4, 125, 78.9, 28.5 and 2.4%, respectively. Nutrient harvest index was significantly affected by ranged between 29.1–36.4%. Application of Zn at 6.25 mg kg-1 (T7) recorded the highest Zn concentration in grain (28.2 mg kg-1) and bioavailability of the fortified Zn (2.05 mg Zn day-1). The lowest phytatic acid concentration in grain was recorded in T8 (RDF + Zn at 7.5 mg kg-1) and after that a significant increase was observed. Transfer coefficient was inversely behaving with Zn application and ranged between 6.03–18.0 grain. The average daily intake of Zn was ranged between 0.075–0.118 mg-1 kg-1 day. Across different treatments the Zn build-up factor, geo-accumulation index and soil enrichment factor was ranged between 0.98–4.90, -0.61–1.70 and 0.24–1.82, respectively in post-harvest soil. In conclusion, agronomic biofortification of Zn through soil applications at 6.25 mg Zn kg-1 was a sustainable way to improving growth and grain Zn, N, K, Cu and Fe uptake of hybrid rice to meet human recruitment.

Present work aimed to assess the impact of pyrogenic effect on the flora, and quality and health of soils of the Utrish Reserve. Studies performed on the territory of reserve within a month after the fire revealed that the areas showed varying degrees of damaged characteristics due to catastrophic fire. The entire damage was recorded in a 40-hectare region, while the vegetation on another 26 hectares of the reserve was damaged to a lesser extent. In total, 4,800 trees were eliminated, 73% of them belonged to rare and endangered species, such as Junipers (Juniperus spp.), Mt. Atlas mastic trees (Pistacia mutica), and Pitsunda pines (Pinus brutia var. pityusa). In the areas of severe disturbance, the soil surface was covered with a constant layer of ash two weeks after the fire. As a result, there was an increase in the pH values, and the chemical composition of brown soil (Cambisol) was determined after the fire. There was also an increase in the organic carbon content and peroxidase activity. Catalase activity, which is sensitive to pyrogenic effects, decreased in all soil samples obtained at post-pyrogenic areas. The effect of fire on the biological state of soils may diminish over time, however, the restoration of the damaged ecosystems may take hundreds of years. The results of this study can be used in assessing the damage to ecosystems after the wildfires, as well as in developing methods to accelerate the restoration of soils after a fire impact.

Field peas are one of the most common crops and are grown in various climatic zones. However, the productivity of this crop can be largely limited by climatic factors. This study investigated the influence of climatic factors on pea grain yield in the semi-arid conditions of the Rostov region of Russia in 2008–2020. To quantify climatic factors, agro-climatic variables were used, such as total temperatures below the minimum temperature, the number of days with temperatures below the minimum temperature, total temperatures above the critical temperature, the number of days with temperatures above the critical temperature, and the Selyaninov hydrothermal coefficient. Agro-climatic variables were calculated using daily climatic variables, such as maximum and minimum temperatures, relative air humidity, and precipitation during pea growing season (April–June). The yield of the pea varied from 90 to 250 kg/ha. In general, the productivity of peas is negatively affected by high temperatures and low humidification level. The yield is negatively correlated with accumulative temperatures above the critical temperature and the number of days with temperatures above the critical temperature and positively correlated with the Selyaninov hydrothermal coefficient and the precipitation in all analyzed areas. The influence of the accumulative temperatures above the critical temperature is the most significant. It explains between 6.6% and 78.9% of the interannual variability of the pea yield. The increase in accumulative temperatures above the critical threshold by every 1 °C will contribute to a decrease in pea grain yield by an average of 0.150 kg/ha. The maximum temperatures in May and June (the period of flowering–grain filling) have the most negative impact on the yield. A 1 °C increase in the average maximum temperature during this period will contribute to a decrease in pea yield by an average of 19.175 kg/ha. The influence of total precipitation during the growing season explains between 12.3% and 50.0% of the variability. The 1 mm decrease in the total precipitation for the growing season will lead to a decrease in pea yields by an average of 0.736 kg/ha. The results of this study can be applied to regional yield forecasting, as well as predicting the impact of climate variability on the grain yield of pea crops in arid areas.

Hibiscus moscheutos L. ‘Berry Awesome’ is a complex hybrid of the new Proven Winners Summerific series of varieties with highly ornamental characteristics. Micropropagation of highly ornamental varieties is important for mass production of planting material for commercial purposes. The traditional methods for propagating Hibiscus varieties, such as cuttings or seed propagation, however, do not guarantee high rates of production of high-quality seedlings. To solve this problem, an attempt was made to develop protocols for micropropagation of Hibiscus moscheutos L. ‘Berry Awesome’ in vitro on agar and liquid medium using a bioreactor system, followed by ex vitro adaptation of the regenerants. The optimal method for sterilization of nodal explants as well as the optimal composition of the initiation medium for shoot proliferation and rooting were determined. For micropropagation on a liquid medium, a rocker-type bioreactor was used, and its advantages over micropropagation on an agar medium were demonstrated. The results showed that the best sterilization method for nodal segment explants was as follows: pretreatment by rinsing with running tap water, sterile water, and distilled water for 70 min and soaking for 5 min in a mixture of solutions of ethyl alcohol (96%), hydrogen peroxide (38%), and water in a ratio of 1:1:2. In this case, live and sterile explants accounted for 62.6%. The optimal initiation medium for axillary buds in nodal segments was the Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 0.1 mg L−1 N-(2-chloro-4-pyridinyl)-N’-phenylurea (CPPU), which resulted in 73.3% of axillary buds being induced. The optimal solid proliferation medium was MS medium supplemented with 0.1 mg L−1 CPPU with a proliferation coefficient of 5.8. In a liquid medium, the optimal concentration of CPPU was 0.05 mg L−1 with a proliferation coefficient of 9.2. The best medium for rooting/shoots with agar and in bioreactors was MS medium with the addition of 0.1 mg L−1 indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). The highest rooting rate was 99.0% in both types of media, and the survival rate of plantlets was 88.7% in solid media and 98.7% in the bioreactor.

It was evaluated the impact of biochar on the petroleum hydrocarbons degradation intensity and the ecological condition of Haplic Chernozem. The study was conducted in the model experiment conditions with Haplic Chernozem contaminated with 5% of petroleum hydrocarbons with application of 10 and 20% biochar. The number of soil bacteria, the activity of catalase and dehydrogenases, germination ability and radish root and shoot length, soil respiration considered to evaluate biological activity. It has been established that 10% biochar application led to intensification of petroleum hydrocarbons degradation up to 17% compare to contaminated soil. Upon adding 10% biochar the СО2 emission increased up to 70-85% on the 18-19th days, then reduced by the 28-30th days till soil emission with the application of biochar in the amount of 20% from soil mass. Activity of dehydrogenases of Haplic Chernozem were stimulated after application of 10% biochar up to 49% compared to control. Biochar application in the doses of 10 and 20% increased the number of soil bacteria up to 209 and 203%, respectively. Application of 20% biochar intensified the germination and early growth of radish seeds. The germination ability, length of radish shoots and roots increased to 44, 66 and 44%, respectively, compare to control. The biochar application in petroleum contaminated soil increased the activity of catalase, dehydrogenases and the number of soil bacteria. Biochar using in doses 10% and 20% contributes to acceleration of petroleum hydrocarbons degradation and improvement of the soil ecological condition.

The emergence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from a variety of natural and anthropogenic sources, such as coal gasification and liquefaction plants, coke and aluminum production, catalytic cracking towers, and motor vehicle exhaust, among others, results in significant soil pollution, and a threat to human health, igniting a surge of interest in advanced research. Even though the cleanup of PAHs-contaminated areas received a great consideration. In the last decade, nanotechnology has exploded in popularity as a result of several unique properties of nanomaterials, and remediation is no exception. Thus, nano-enhanced bioremediation reported to act as a viable and effective strategy for PAHs remediation. Further, the integration of nano-enabled materials with microorganisms emerged as a promising biodegradation approach for PAHs remediation. As a result, the focus of this mini review is on depicting the possible roles of various nanomaterials in decontaminating PAHs as a green strategy by boosting the efficacy of microbial functionality, and mechanism of nanoparticles-microbes interaction in PAHs degradation. The future perspective of nano-enhanced microbial remediation of PAHs in realistic environments are also discussed.

Plant diseases are still the main problem for the reduction in crop yield and a threat to global food security. Additionally, excessive usage of chemical inputs such as pesticides and fungicides to control plant diseases have created another serious problem for human and environmental health. In view of this, the application of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) for controlling plant disease incidences has been identified as an eco-friendly approach for coping with the food security issue. In this review, we have identified different ways by which PGPRs are capable of reducing phytopathogenic infestations and enhancing crop yield. PGPR suppresses plant diseases, both directly and indirectly, mediated by microbial metabolites and signaling components. Microbial synthesized anti-pathogenic metabolites such as siderophores, antibiotics, lytic enzymes, hydrogen cyanide, and several others act directly on phytopathogens. The indirect mechanisms of reducing plant disease infestation are caused by the stimulation of plant immune responses known as initiation of systemic resistance (ISR) which is mediated by triggering plant immune responses elicited through pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs). The ISR triggered in the infected region of the plant leads to the development of systemic acquired resistance (SAR) throughout the plant making the plant resistant to a wide range of pathogens. A number of PGPRs including Pseudomonas and Bacillus genera have proven their ability to stimulate ISR. However, there are still some challenges in the large-scale application and acceptance of PGPR for pest and disease management. Further, we discuss the newly formulated PGPR inoculants possessing both plant growth-promoting activities and plant disease suppression ability for a holistic approach to sustaining plant health and enhancing crop productivity.

Nanotechnological approaches are emerging as one of the most contemporary restoration strategies that may be used to remove a variety of contaminants from the environment, including heavy metals, organic and inorganic pollutants. The application of nanoparticles (NPs) is entrenched with biological processes to boost up the removal of toxic compounds from contaminated soils. Many efforts have been taken to increase the effectiveness of phytoremediation such as the addition of chemical additives, application of rhizobacteria, and genetic engineering, etc. In this context, the integration of nanotechnology with bioremediation has introduced new dimensions to the reclamation methods. Thus, advanced remediation methods that combine nanotechnology with phytoremediation and bioremediation, where nano-scale process regulation aids in the absorption and breakdown of pollutants. NPs absorb/adsorb a variety of contaminants and also catalyze reactions by lowering the energy required for their breakdown due to unique surface properties. As a result, these nanobioremediation procedures decrease the accumulation of contaminants while simultaneously limiting their dispersal from one medium to another. Therefore, the present review is dealing with all the possibilities of the application of NPs for restoration of contaminated soils.

Agriculture is a backbone of global economy and most of the population relies on this sector for their livelihood. Chitosan as a biodegradable material thus can be explored for in various fields in its nano form to replace non-biodegradable and toxic compounds. The chitosan has appealing properties like biocompatibility, non-toxicity, biodegradability, and low allergenic, making it useful in several applications including in agriculture sector. Because of their unique properties, chitosan nanoparticles (ChNPs) are extensively applied as a bioagent in various biological and biomedical processes, including wastewater treatment, plant growth promoter, fungicidal agent, wound healing, and scaffold for tissue engineering.Furthermore, the biocompatibility of chitosan nanoparticles (ChNPs) is reported to have other biological properties such as anti-cancerous, antifungal, antioxidant activities, even induces an immune response in the plant, and helps manage biotic and abiotic stresses. Chitosan can also find its application in wastewater treatment, hydrating agents in cosmetics, the food industry, paper, and the textile industry as adhesive, drug-delivering agent in medical as well as for bioimaging. Since chitosan has low toxicity, the nano-formulation of chitosan can be used for the controlled release of fertilizers, pesticides, and plant growth promoters in agriculture fields. The ChNPs applications in precision farming being a novel approach in recent developments. Here we have comprehensively reviewed the major points in this review are; the synthesis of ChNPs by biological resources, their modification and formulation for increasing its applicability, their modified types, and the different agricultural applications of ChNPs.

Salinity is a global conundrum that negatively affects various biometrics of agricultural crops. Jasmonic acid (JA) is a phytohormone that reinforces multilayered defense strategies against abiotic stress, including salinity. This study investigated the effect of JA (60 μM) on two wheat cultivars, namely ZM9 and YM25, exposed to NaCl (14.50 dSm−1) during two consecutive growing seasons. Morphologically, plants primed with JA enhanced the vegetative growth and yield components. The improvement of growth by JA priming is associated with increased photosynthetic pigments, stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2, maximal photosystem II efficiency, and transpiration rate of the stressed plants. Furthermore, wheat cultivars primed with JA showed a reduction in the swelling of the chloroplast, recovery of the disintegrated thylakoids grana, and increased plastoglobuli numbers compared to saline-treated plants. JA prevented dehydration of leaves by increasing relative water content and water use efficiency via reducing water and osmotic potential using proline as an osmoticum. There was a reduction in sodium (Na+) and increased potassium (K+) contents, indicating a significant role of JA priming in ionic homeostasis, which was associated with induction of the transporters, viz., SOS1, NHX2, and HVP1. Exogenously applied JA mitigated the inhibitory effect of salt stress in plants by increasing the endogenous levels of cytokinins and indole acetic acid, and reducing the abscisic acid (ABA) contents. In addition, the oxidative stress caused by increasing hydrogen peroxide in salt-stressed plants was restrained by JA, which was associated with increased α-tocopherol, phenolics, and flavonoids levels and triggered the activities of superoxide dismutase and ascorbate peroxidase activity. This increase in phenolics and flavonoids could be explained by the induction of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity. The results suggest that JA plays a key role at the morphological, biochemical, and genetic levels of stressed and non-stressed wheat plants which is reflected in yield attributes. Hierarchical cluster analysis and principal component analyses showed that salt sensitivity was associated with the increments of Na+, hydrogen peroxide, and ABA contents. The regulatory role of JA under salinity stress was interlinked with increased JA level which consequentially improved ion transporting, osmoregulation, and antioxidant defense.

Non-ribosomal peptides (NRPs) are a diverse group of bioactive compounds synthesized by microorganisms, and their antimicrobial properties make them ideal candidates for use as biocontrol agents against pathogens. Non-ribosomal peptides produced by Plant-Growth-Promoting Bacteria (PGPB) have gained interest for the biocontrol of plants’ bacterial and fungal pathogens. In this review, the structure and mode of action of NRPs, including their characterization and the characterization of NRP-producing microorganisms, are discussed. The use of NRPs in soilless agriculture and their potential as part of a sustainable plant disease control strategy are also highlighted. In addition, the review debates the commercial aspects of PGPB’s formulations and their potential as a biocontrol agent. Overall, this review emphasizes the importance of NRPs derived from PGPB in the biocontrol of plant pathogens and their potential to be used as an environmentally friendly and sustainable plant disease control strategy.

Based on 10 years of environmental monitoring located around the emission zone of an electricity supplier, the main regularities have been studied for the content of heavy metals (HMs), such as Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu, Ni, Mn, and Cr, and 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the soils of agricultural landscapes and their accumulation in Triticum aestivum. It has been shown that one of the most significant factors for the pollutants accumulation in soils and plants was the prevailing wind direction on the territory and atmospheric transfer of the dust particles of the enterprise with adsorbed pollutants. As the content of pollutants in the soil increased, their accumulation in Triticum aestivum increased with each season to a level exceeding maximum permissible concentrations (MPC), especially for Pb, Cd, and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP). The unambiguous influx of pollutants from the soil into the roots and further into the aboveground organs of the plant was typical only for Mn, Cr, and BaP, and the accumulation of other studied pollutants can be explained by their foliar influx. It has been established that Triticum aestivum was a more tolerant plant with respect to heavy metals pollution than PAHs.

The article presents results for the magnetic nanoparticles sol–gel method synthesis of cobalt (II) ferrite and organic–inorganic composite materials based on it. The obtained materials were characterized using X-ray phase analysis, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, Scherrer, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) methods. A composite materials formation mechanism is proposed, which includes a gelation stage where transition element cation chelate complexes react with citric acid and subsequently decompose under heating. The fundamental possibility of obtaining an organo–inorganic composite material based on cobalt (II) ferrite and an organic carrier using the presented method has been proved. Composite materials formation is established to lead to a significant (5–9 times) increase in the sample surface area. Materials with a developed surface are formed: the surface area measured by the BET method is 83–143 m2/g. The resulting composite materials have sufficient magnetic properties to be mobile in a magnetic field. Consequently, wide possibilities for polyfunctional materials synthesis open up for various applications in medicine.

Global issues such as soil deterioration, pollution, and soil productivity loss induced by industrialization and intensive agriculture pose a serious danger to agricultural production and sustainability. Numerous technical breakthroughs have been applied to clean up soil or boost the output of damaged soils, but they have failed to restore or improve soil health to desired levels owing to expense, impossibility in a practical setting, or, to a lesser extent, high labor consumption. Recent nanotechnology advancements promise to improve soil quality indicators and crop yields while ensuring environmental sustainability. As previously discovered, the inclusion of nanomaterials (NMs) in soils could manipulate rhizospheric microbes or agriculturally important microbes and improve their functionality, facilitating the availability of nutrients to plants and improving root systems and crop growth in general, opening a new window for soil health improvement. A viewpoint on the difficulties and long-term outcomes of applying NMs to soils is provided, along with detailed statistics on how nanotechnology can improve soil health and crop productivity. Thus, evaluating nanotechnology may be valuable in gaining insights into the practical use of NMs for soil health enhancement.

Due to anthropogenic activities, potentially toxic elements cause severe soil pollution worldwide. Therefore, remediation of contaminated soils is exigent and imperative. One cost-effective and environmentally friendly remediation approach is the application of biochar, which is a solid carbonaceous material. Biochar degrades slowly in soil and can persist there for thousands of years, according to various estimations. In addition, coal obtained from crop wastes has a developed porous structure, a high specific surface area, and does not contain toxic compounds such as heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Biochar with optimal values for specific surface area and porosity was obtained from rice husk by stepwise pyrolysis. The pyrolysis parameters such as the heating rate (11 °C∙min−1), temperature (700 °C), and holding time (45 min) were established. At the same time, the surface area of the biochar increased by almost three times with a change in the pyrolysis conditions. As a part of this research, the efficacy of adsorption of Cu(II) from Haplic Chernozem using biochar made from rice husk was examined. The Langmuir and Freundlich models were employed to describe the adsorption data. The isotherm data of heavy metals was better fitted to the Langmuir adsorption model. The addition of rice husk biochar to the soil presented greater removal efficiencies of Cu(II) than soil in pure form. The analysis of the structural characteristics of the sorbent suggest that this material may work efficiently for the restoration of contaminated soil.

Vermicompost (VC) is a nutrient-rich material that is mixed with soil, and it is used in this study. Four different environments were created such as control (Soil:VC:100–0%), mix one (Soil:VC:70–30% w/w), mix two (Soil:VC:50–50% w/w), and mix three (Soil:VC:40:60% w/w), and three well-developed roses (Vinca rosea valiant, Pelargonium peltatum, Pegasus patio) seedlings were transferred to individual pots. Plant growth parameters, i.e., the number of flowers, plant height, stem diameter, chlorophyll reading value, fresh flower weight, and flower dry weight height, were compared with respect to control seedlings. The improvement in the number of flowers, plant height, stem diameter, chlorophyll reading value, fresh flower weight, and flower dry weight height by 264, 71, 58, 255, and 193% for Vinca rosea valiant rosea, 138, 12, 160, 13, 55 and 112% for P. patio rose, and 50, 14, 23, 8, 61, and 41% for P. peltatum, respectively, grown in soil mixed with VC as compared to control. As a result of the research, the optimum growth parameter values and chlorophyll Meter SPAD values were obtained from the mix-three mediums for all three roses species. These results showed that 40% soil and 60% VC application could be proposed as the most effective medium in ornamental plant production.

The “Zero Hunger” goal is one of the key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. Therefore, improvements in crop production have always been a prime objective to meet the demands of an ever-growing population. In the last decade, studies have acknowledged the role of photosynthesis augmentation and enhancing nutrient use efficiency (NUE) in improving crop production. Recently, the applications of nanobionics in crop production have given hope with their lucrative properties to interact with the biological system. Nanobionics have significantly been effective in modulating the photosynthesis capacity of plants. It is documented that nanobionics could assist plants by acting as an artificial photosynthetic system to improve photosynthetic capacity, electron transfer in the photosystems, and pigment content, and enhance the absorption of light across the UV-visible spectrum. Smart nanocarriers, such as nanobionics, are capable of delivering the active ingredient nanocarrier upon receiving external stimuli. This can markedly improve NUE, reduce wastage, and improve cost effectiveness. Thus, this review emphasizes the application of nanobionics for improving crop yield by the two above-mentioned approaches. Major concerns and future prospects associated with the use of nanobionics are also deliberated concisely.

Antibiotic resistance is one of the major growing concerns for public health. Conventional antibiotics act on a few predefined targets and, with time, several bacteria have developed resistance against a large number of antibiotics. The WHO has suggested that antibiotic resistance is at a crisis stage and identification of new antibiotics and targets could be the only approach to bridge the gap. Filamentous Temperature Sensitive-Mutant Z (Fts-Z) is one of the promising and less explored antibiotic targets. It is a highly conserved protein and plays a key role in bacterial cell division by introducing a cytokinetic Z-ring formation. In the present article, the potential of over 165 cyanobacterial compounds with reported antibiotic activity against the catalytic core domain in the Fts-Z protein of the Bacillus subtilis was studied. The identified cyanobacterial compounds were screened using the GLIDE module of Maestro v-2019-2 followed by 100-ns molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Ranking of the potential compound was performed using dock score and MMGBSA based free energy. The study reported that the docking score of aphanorphine (−6.010 Kcalmol−1) and alpha-dimorphecolic acid (ADMA) (−6.574 Kcalmol−1) showed significant role with respect to the reported potential inhibitor PC190723 (−4.135 Kcalmol−1). A 100 ns MD simulation infers that Fts-Z ADMA complex has a stable conformation throughout the progress of the simulation. Both the compounds, i.e., ADMA and Aphanorphine, were further considered for In-vitro validation by performing anti-bacterial studies against B. subtilis by agar well diffusion method. The results obtained through In-vitro studies confirm that ADMA, a small molecule of cyanobacterial origin, is a potential compound with an antibacterial activity that may act by inhibiting the novel target Fts-Z and could be a great drug candidate for antibiotic development.

The advancements in nanoparticles (NPs) may be lighting the sustainable and eco-friendly path to accelerate the removal of toxic compounds from contaminated soils. Many efforts have been made to increase the efficiency of phytoremediation, such as the inclusion of chemical additives, the application of rhizobacteria, genetic engineering, etc. In this context, the integration of nanotechnology with bioremediation has introduced new dimensions for revamping the remediation methods. Hence, advanced remediation approaches combine nanotechnological and biological remediation methods in which the nanoscale process regulation supports the adsorption and deterioration of pollutants. Nanoparticles absorb/adsorb a large variety of contaminants and also catalyze reactions by lowering the energy required to break them down, owing to their unique surface properties. As a result, this remediation process reduces the accumulation of pollutants while limiting their spread from one medium to another. Therefore, this review article deals with all possibilities for the application of NPs for the remediation of contaminated soils and associated environmental concerns.

Reduced graphite oxide (rGO)-based materials have demonstrated promising potential for advanced oxidation processes. Along with its distinctive 2D characteristics, rGO offers the prospect of catalytic degradation of various kinds of organic pollutants from aqueous environments. The practical application of rGO as a metal-free catalyst material to promote the Fenton reaction depends on the degree of rGO reduction. In this regard, the rGO was prepared according to oxidation by modified Hummers’ method and two-step reduction via hydrothermal and calcination in the N2 atmosphere. The as-prepared rGO was characterized in terms of X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The effectiveness of as-prepared rGO as a photocatalyst and the metal-free catalyst to decolorize different textile dyes, including basic red 46, basic red 18, and methylene blue, was investigated in visible/rGO and visible/rGO/H2O2 systems. The impact of operational factors such as catalyst dose, pH, and initial dye concentration was examined. The dye degradation process was investigated by the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. In addition, the recyclability of rGO in the visible/rGO/H2O2 system was examined.

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous and constitute a global hazard to the environment because of their robustness, resilience, and long-term presence in the ecosystem. For now, the majority of research has primarily focused on marine and freshwater ecosystems, with just a small amount of attention towards the terrestrial ecosystems. Although terrestrial ecosystems are recognized as the origins and routes for MPs to reach the sea, there is a paucity of knowledge about these ecological compartments, which is necessary for conducting effective ecological risk assessments. Moreover, because of their high persistence and widespread usage in agriculture, agribusiness, and allied sectors, the presence of MPs in arable soils is undoubtedly an undeniable and severe concern. Consequently, in the recent decade, the potential risk of MPs in food production, as well as their impact on plant growth and development, has received a great deal of interest. Thus, a thorough understanding of the fate and risks MPs, as well as prospective removal procedures for safe and viable agricultural operations in real-world circumstances, are urgently needed. Therefore, the current review is proposed to highlight the potential sources and interactions of MPs with agroecosystems and plants, along with their remediation strategies.
