Wireless networks have become essential in daily life, with a growing number of base stations and connected devices. However, increasing traffic and energy consumption pose challenges. This research proposes a Dual Step Hybrid Mechanism (DSHM) for energy optimization, incorporating MIMO technologies. The first step introduces an optimal algorithm that iteratively updates the probability distribution to achieve the best solution. The second step focuses on reducing energy consumption while maximizing energy efficiency, using specific techniques and strategies to minimize usage without compromising energy maximization. The proposed approach is evaluated using parameter settings, including block length, path loss, hardware impairments, and bandwidth. The research investigates the impact of hardware impairments on energy efficiency and analyzes performance under different SINR constraints. The study also examines energy efficiency in active user density and base station density, highlighting the superior energy efficiency achieved by MIMO configurations.

Thrust foil bearings operating at hydrodynamic conditions are self-acting (aerodynamic) bearings that support high-speed shafts at mild loading conditions with air as a lubricant and are generally used in low-power gas turbines. This paper presents an experimental study and a detailed computational analysis of dynamic characteristics of the foil thrust bearing (FTB) in terms of load-carrying capabilities as a function of thrust runner speed and gap between the bearing assembly and the runner by considering the effect of bearing parameters such as number of foils, shape of the foils, and assembly of foils on the bearing pad. The parametric study was conducted on a newly conceptualized bearing test rig capable of rotating up to 45,000 rpm speeds that measured the axial loads of the air foil thrust bearings (AFTB). The computational model of the foil thrust bearings for various configurations with top foils is simulated using multiphysics software for foil deflections and pressure distributions on the foil surface. The numerical results were compared with the experimental values, while the air foil thrust bearings with multilayered foils called cascaded foils (patented) had higher load capability in comparison to other conventional bearing models.

The Internet of Things ecosystem pertains to the web-enabled connected devices that operate built-in processors to record, send, and act on information from their surroundings via embedded communication hardware. IoT applications span from education, healthcare to self-driving cars. The high delay supplied through the connecting network to the data centers and huge data traffic can cause the system to become congested. Hence, the cloud is not suggested for the delay-sensitive applications and it is extremely difficult to provide educational applications, particularly in a mix of cloud and fog conditions. Fog computing was created to address this problem and improve time-sensitive applications by considering quality of service (QoS). The allocation of resources and scheduling of tasks are challenging issues for IoT applications in a fog environment. The resources are required for each educational application that includes several modules to run. In this paper, we used Weighted Greedy Knapsack (WGK) based algorithm for the resource allocation to the modules/components in the fog system. We have considered the smart parade application to provide certain services/resources and the proposed method was experimented in iFogSim. The proposed method shows a better energy consumption and execution cost than that of the concurrent, First-Come-First-Served (FCFS) and Delay-Priority algorithms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The high Li-ion conductivity and wide electrochemical stability of Li-rich garnets (Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 ) make them one of the leading solid electrolyte candidates for solid-state batteries. Dopants such as Al and Ga are typically used to enable stabilization of the high Li + ion-conductive cubic phase at room temperature. Although numerous studies exist that have characterized the electrochemical properties, structure, and lithium diffusion in Al- and Ga-LLZO, the local structure and site occupancy of dopants in these compounds are not well understood. Two broad 27 Al or 69,71 Ga resonances are often observed with chemical shifts consistent with tetrahedrally coordinated Al/Ga in the magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) spectra of both Al- and Ga-LLZO, which have been assigned to either Al and/or Ga occupying 24d and 96h/48g sites in the LLZO lattice or the different Al/Ga configurations that arise from different arrangements of Li around these dopants. In this work, we unambiguously show that the side products γ-LiAlO 2 and LiGaO 2 lead to the high frequency resonances observed by NMR spectroscopy and that both Al and Ga only occupy the 24d site in the LLZO lattice. Furthermore, it was observed that the excess Li often used during synthesis leads to the formation of these side products by consuming the Al/Ga dopants. In addition, the consumption of Al/Ga dopants leads to the tetragonal phase formation commonly observed in the literature, even after careful mixing of precursors. The side-products can exist even after sintering, thereby controlling the Al/Ga content in the LLZO lattice and substantially influencing the lithium-ion conductivity in LLZO, as measured here by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2023 The Authors. Gelatin hydrogels are attractive scaffold materials for tissue engineering applications as they provide motifs for cell attachment, undergo large deformations, and are tunable. Low toughness and brittle fractures however limit their use in load bearing applications. An investigation of crack tip processes and mechanisms of crack propagation is warranted to link fracture properties with material microstructure. We cross-linked gelatin using glutaraldehyde to obtain low cross-linked control hydrogels and used an additional cross-linker, methylglyoxal, to fabricate MGO hydrogels with higher cross-links. We quantified fractures in the gelatin hydrogels from both groups using pure shear notch tests and characterized strain fields near the crack tip using 2-D digital image correlation. We used a numerical method based on Taylor's series expansion to measure the crack tip curvatures in the hydrogels. This method captures tip curvatures better than the parabolic method routinely used in studies. Results from our study show that cracks in gelatin hydrogels underwent frequent arrests during propagation through the specimen width in both groups. MGO hydrogels had 85% enhanced fracture toughness and a significantly higher number of stalls compared to the control group. Crack initiations following stalls in the sample correlated with low tip curvatures in both hydrogel groups. We also show that mechanical stretching blunts the crack tip before crack propagation; the degree of blunting was independent of the cross-link density and elastic modulus of the gelatin hydrogels. These results show a link between crack growth and the tip curvature in cross-linked gelatin hydrogels, and offer potential insights for the development of tougher hydrogels.

Garnet solid-electrolyte-based Li-metal batteries can be used in energy storage devices with high energy densities and thermal stability. However, the tendency of garnets to form lithium hydroxide and carbonate on the surface in an ambient atmosphere poses significant processing challenges. In this work, the decomposition of surface layers under various gas environments is studied by using two surface-sensitive techniques, near-ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction. It is found that heating to 500 °C under an oxygen atmosphere (of 1 mbar and above) leads to a clean garnet surface, whereas low oxygen partial pressures (i.e., in argon or vacuum) lead to additional graphitic carbon deposits. The clean surface of garnets reacts directly with moisture and carbon dioxide below 400 and 500 °C, respectively. This suggests that additional CO 2 concentration controls are needed for the handling of garnets. By heating under O 2 along with avoiding H 2 O and CO 2 , symmetric cells with less than 10 Ωcm 2 interface resistance are prepared without the use of any interlayers; plating currents of >1 mA cm -2 without dendrite initiation are demonstrated., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2023 The Authors. Background and Aims: We aim to determine the prevalence of anemia in hospitalized patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) and estimate the relationship between the severity of anemia and diabetic foot ulcer., Materials and Methods: We retrospectively collected and evaluated the data of 323 patients hospitalized with diabetic foot ulcer (DFU). We included 299 type 2 diabetic patients with foot ulcers of neuropathic or neuroischemic nature with infection. Anemia was defined based on World Health Organization (WHO) criteria, and the severity of DFU was classified in University of Texas (UT) grades., Results: Anemia was detected in 94.3% of DFU, and the prevalence of mild, moderate, and severe anemia was 16.7%, 55.7%, and 27.6%, respectively. There was a significant difference in the mean hemoglobin (Hb) levels among the patients with varying grades of severity of DFU (1B: Hb=10.17±2.08 gm/dL, 2B: Hb=9.27±2.04 gm/dL, 3B: Hb=8.03±1.829 gm/dL; p value=<0.0001). The iron study was available in 141 (47.15%) patients and was suggestive of anemia of chronic disorder (mean serum iron=40.22±23.81 mcg/dL, mean total iron-binding capacity (TIBC)=239.34±67.24 mcg/dL, mean ferritin=378.05±141.337 ng/mL). TIBC significantly decreased (1B=262.13±61.05, 2B=233.65±71.26, 3B=222.43±74.18; p=0.04), and ferritin significantly increased (1B=309.9±70.76, 2B=351.73±94.22, 3B=488.58±170.4; p<0.0001) with increasing DFU severity. Hemoglobin was significantly decreased at the time of discharge in comparison to that at admission (9.3±2.1 gm/dL versus 8.8±1.5 gm/dL; p value=0.01). Red blood cell (RBC) counts, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), lymphocyte counts, albumin, calcium, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) significantly decreased with the increase of DFU severity. The duration of hospitalization, total leucocyte counts, neutrophil counts, and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) increased with the severity of DFU., Conclusions: The prevalence of anemia was very high in DFU and more than three-fourths of the patients had moderate to severe anemia. The severity of anemia was associated with the severity of DFU. The most common cause of anemia was anemia of chronic disorder secondary to diabetic foot infection. The deployment of predictive analytic algorithms that can safely and seamlessly integrate into existing healthcare workflows remains a significant challenge. Here, we present a scalable, cloud-based, fault-tolerant platform that is capable of extracting and processing electronic health record (EHR) data for any patient at any time following admission and transferring results back into the EHR. This platform has been successfully deployed within the UC San Diego Health system and utilizes interoperable data standards to enable portability.Clinical relevance- This platform is currently hosting a deep learning model for the early prediction of sepsis that is operational in two emergency departments.

Reported herein is a reactivity of propargyl alcohols as "Three-Carbon Synthons" in a Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H functionalization of acetanilides, leading to the synthesis of core structures of isocryptolepine, γ-carbolines, dihydrochromeno[2,3-b]indoles, and diindolylmethanes (DIM) derivatives. The transformation involves a rhodium(III)-catalyzed C-H functionalization and heteroannulation to yield indoles followed by a cascade cyclization with both external and internal nucleophiles to afford diverse products. The role of the hydroxy group, the key function of the silver additive, the origin of the reverse regioselectivity and the rate-determining step, are rationalized in conformity with the combination of experimental, noncovalent interaction analysis and DFT studies. Smart alloying and microstructural engineering mitigate challenges associated with laser-powder bed fusion additive manufacturing (L-PBFAM). A novel Al-Ni-Ti-Zr alloy utilized grain refinement by heterogeneous nucleation and eutectic solidification to achieve superior performance-printability synergy. Conventional mechanical testing cannot delineate complex micromechanics of such alloys. This study combined multiscale nanomechanical and microstructural mapping to illustrate mechanical signatures associated with hierarchical heat distribution and rapid solidification of L-PBFAM. The disproportionate hardening effect imparted by Al 3 (Ti,Zr) precipitates in the pool boundaries and the semi-solid zone was successfully demonstrated. Nanomechanical response associated with heterogeneity in particle volume fraction and coherency across melt pool was interpreted from nanoindentation force-displacement curves. The hardness map effectively delineated the weakest and strongest sections in the pool with microscopic accuracy. The presented approach serves as a high throughput methodology to establish the chemistry-processing-microstructure-properties correlation of newly designed alloys for L-PBFAM., (© 2022. Li - and Mn-rich layered oxides (Li 1.2 Ni 0.2 Mn 0.6 O 2 ) are actively pursued as high energy and sustainable alternatives to the current Li-ion battery cathodes that contain Co. However, the severe decay in discharge voltage observed in these cathodes needs to be addressed before they can find commercial applications. A few mechanisms differing in origin have been proposed to explain the voltage fade, which may be caused by differences in material composition, morphology and electrochemical testing protocols. Here, these challenges are addressed by synthesising Li 1.2 Ni 0.2 Mn 0.6 O 2 using three different hydrothermal and solid-state approaches and studying their degradation using the same cell design and cycling protocols. The voltage fade is found to be similar under the same electrochemical testing protocols, regardless of the synthesis method. X-ray absorption near edge, extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopies, and energy loss spectroscopy in a scanning transmission electron microscope indicate only minor changes in the bulk Mn oxidation state but reveal a much more reduced particle surface upon extended cycling. No spinel phase is seen via the bulk structural characterisation methods of synchrotron X-ray diffraction, 7 Li magic angle spinning solid state nuclear magnetic resonance and Raman spectroscopy. Thus, the voltage fade is believed to largely result from a heavily reduced particle surface. This hypothesis is further confirmed by galvanostatic intermittent titration technique analysis, which indicates that only very small shifts in equilibrium potential take place, in contrast to the overpotential which builds up after cycling. The fundamental challenge of C-F bond formation by reductive elimination has been met by compounds of select transition metals and fewer main group elements. The work detailed herein expands the list of main group elements known to be capable of reductively eliminating a C-F bond to include tellurium. Surprising and novel modes of both sp 2 and sp 3 C-F bond formation were observed alongside formation of Te IV cations during two separate attempts to synthesize/characterize fluorinated organotellurium(VI) cations in superacidic media (SbF 5 /SO 2 ClF). Following detailed low-temperature NMR experiments, the mechanisms of the two unique reductive elimination reactions were probed and investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Background: Primary aim to identify the ideal medial joint gap in extension needed to prevent post-operative flexion contracture following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in varus osteoarthritic knees by the modified gap balancing technique. A secondary aim was to analyze multiple factors that influence knee extension in TKA by modified gap balancing., Methods: This is a prospective cohort study of 150 patients diagnosed with osteoarthritic varus knee who underwent TKA using the modified gap balancing technique. Operative and clinical records were assessed to determine factors including age, BMI (Body mass index), pre-operative extension angle and the medial extension laxity. Patients were followed for 6-months post-operatively and reviewed for knee extension angle., Results: Six months final follow-up information was available for 148 patients with an average age of 75.5 years. Pre-operative knee extension and BMI were significantly associated with post-operative knee extension. Post-operative flexion contracture of ≧ 10 0 was not seen in any of 34 patients with a medial extension laxity ≧ 0 mm who had no pre-existing flexion contracture, and in 1/9 (11.1%) patients with a medial extension laxity ≧ 1 mm who had pre-existing flexion contracture., Conclusions: Pre-operative extension angle and BMI significantly influence the post-operative knee extension angle in TKA using the modified gap balancing technique. Background: The relative role of skeletal muscle mechano-transduction in comparison with systemic hormones, such as testosterone (T), in regulating hypertrophic responses to exercise is contentious. We investigated the mechanistic effects of chemical endogenous T depletion adjuvant to 6 weeks of resistance exercise training (RET) on muscle mass, function, myogenic regulatory factors, and muscle anabolic signalling in younger men., Methods: Non-hypogonadal men (n = 16; 18-30 years) were randomized in a double-blinded fashion to receive placebo (P, saline n = 8) or the GnRH analogue, Goserelin [Zoladex (Z), 3.6 mg, n = 8], injections, before 6 weeks of supervised whole-body RET. Participants underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), ultrasound of m. vastus lateralis (VL), and VL biopsies for assessment of cumulative muscle protein synthesis (MPS), myogenic gene expression, and anabolic signalling pathway responses., Results: Zoladex suppressed endogenous T to within the hypogonadal range and was well tolerated; suppression was associated with blunted fat free mass [Z: 55.4 ± 2.8 to 55.8 ± 3.1 kg, P = 0.61 vs. P: 55.9 ± 1.7 to 57.4 ± 1.7 kg, P = 0.006, effect size (ES) = 0.31], composite strength (Z: 40 ± 2.3% vs. P: 49.8 ± 3.3%, P = 0.03, ES = 1.4), and muscle thickness (Z: 2.7 ± 0.4 to 2.69 ± 0.36 cm, P > 0.99 vs. P: 2.74 ± 0.32 to 2.91 ± 0.32 cm, P < 0.0001, ES = 0.48) gains.
