Abstract The photocatalytic approach is known to be one of the most promising advanced oxidation processes for the tertiary treatment of polluted water. In this paper, β-NaYF4/TiO2 composite films have been synthetized through a novel sol–gel/spin-coating approach using a mixture of β-diketonate complexes of Na and Y, and Yb3+, Tm3+, Gd3+, Eu3+ as doping ions, together with the TiO2 P25 nanoparticles. The herein pioneering approach represents an easy, straightforward and industrially appealing method for the fabrication of doped β-NaYF4/TiO2 composites. The effect of the doped β-NaYF4 phase on the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) has been deeply investigated. In particular, the upconverting TiO2/β-NaYF4: 20%Yb, 2% Gd, x% Tm (x = 0.5 and 1%) and the downshifting TiO2/β-NaYF4: 10% Eu composite films have been tested on MB degradation both under UV and visible light irradiation. An improvement up to 42.4% in the degradation of MB has been observed for the TiO2/β-NaYF4: 10% Eu system after 240 min of UV irradiation.

In this study, we explore how the in vitro conditions chosen to cultivate and observe the long-term (up to 72 h) toxic effect of Cu(II) on the freshwater microalga Coccomyxa cimbrica sp.nov. can affect the dose response in time. We test three different cultivation protocols: (i) under static conditions in sealed glass cells, (ii) in a microfluidic device, where the sample is constantly circulated with a peristaltic pump, and (iii) under continuous agitation in plastic falcons on an orbital shaker. The advantage and novelty of this study resides in the fact that each condition can mimic different environmental conditions that alga cells can find in nature. The effect of increasing dose of Cu(II) as a function of time (24, 48, and 72 h) is monitored following chlorophyll a fluorescence intensity from single cells. Fluorescence lifetime imaging experiments are also explored to gain information on the changes induced by Cu(II) in the photosynthetic cycle of this microalga.

Piezoelectric materials are a class of compounds that is gaining increasing interest in various applications such as energy harvesting. During the last decade, lead-free ZnSnO3 perovskite ceramic has gained attention among the scientific community thanks to its unique symmetry-dependent and spontaneous polarization properties such as piezoelectricity and ferroelectricity. Nevertheless, only a few studies successfully prepared pure ZnSnO3, while most seem to mislead the product for its hydroxide precursor (ZnSn(OH)6) or a mixture of Zn2SnO4 and SnO2. In our work, we investigated the conversion of ZnSn(OH)6 at different temperatures (500, 600, 700, 750 and 800 °C) by X-ray powder diffraction analysis, and in-situ using synchrotron radiation up to 950 °C under ambient atmosphere and in a vacuum, to reproduce conventional reaction conditions. SEM and TEM have been used to understand the evolution of the particle shape and surface structure before and after the thermal treatments. Our results show the instability of the ZnSn(OH)6 phase, which converts into an amorphous structure at low temperature. Above 750 °C, the material segregates into Zn2SnO4 and SnO2, supporting the hypothesis that the thermal treatment of the hydroxide phase under typical conditions results in the formation of an oxide mixture rather than the phase pure ZnSnO3.

In the present work, an in-depth study on the sol-gel process for the fabrication of Eu-doped CaF2 materials in the form of thin films has been addressed for the production of down-shifting layers. Fine-tuning of the operative parameters, such as the annealing temperature, substrate nature and doping ion percentage, has been finalized in order to obtain Eu(III)-doped CaF2 thin films via a reproducible and selective solution process for down-shifting applications. An accurate balance of such parameters allows for obtaining films with high uniformity in terms of both their structural and compositional features. The starting point of the synthesis is the use of a mixture of Ca(hfa)2•diglyme•H2O and Eu(hfa)3•diglyme adducts, with a suited ratio to produce 5%, 10% and 15% Eu-doped CaF2 films, in a water/ethanol solution. A full investigation of the structural, morphological and compositional features of the films, inspected using X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), respectively, has stated a correlation between the annealing temperature and the structural characteristics and morphology of the CaF2 thin films. Interestingly, crystalline CaF2 films are obtained at quite low temperatures of 350–400 °C. The down-shifting properties, validated by taking luminescence measurements under UV excitation, have allowed us to correlate the local environment in terms of the degree of symmetry around the europium ions with the relative doping ion percentages. Significant work has recently focused on developing novel materials suitable for solar technologies with better conversion efficiencies, while maintaining low costs. BaF2 has been investigated as a fluoride host for doping with luminescent ions for energy conversion processes in photovoltaic cells. This work employed a metal–organic chemical vapor deposition technique to prepare nanostructured europium-doped BaF2 thin films on silicon and quartz substrates. Samples have been fabricated by varying the deposition temperature from 300 to 600 °C in order to examine how temperature affects the structure, morphology, and luminescence of Eu-doped BaF2 thin films. A multicomponent combination of fluorinated β-diketonate metal–organic precursors of barium and europium, Ba(hfa)2·tetraglyme and Eu(hfa)3·diglyme, in an appropriate molar ratio, is employed to fabricate BaF2 based thin films. These precursors serve as a single molten source by delivering all the elements required (Ba, Eu, and F) for forming the Eu-doped BaF2 phase due to the similar nature of the ligands. On silicon substrates, preliminary deposition tests have been carried out to confirm the purity, homogeneity, and appropriate stoichiometry of films. The obtained results pave the way for the production of BaF2 thin films doped with lanthanide ions, particularly interesting for their up-conversion (UC), down-conversion (DC), and down-shifting (DS) properties.
