1. Integrability in Perturbed Black Holes: Background Hidden Structures

Abstract: In this work we investigate the presence of integrable hidden structures in the dynamics of perturbed non-rotating black holes (BHs). This can also be considered as a first step in a wider program of an effective identification of ``slow'' and ``fast'' degrees of freedom (DoFs) in the (binary) BH dynamics, following a wave-mean flow perspective. The slow DoFs would be associated with a nonlinear integrable dynamics, on which the fast ones propagate following an effective linear dynamics. BH perturbation theory offers a natural ground to test these properties. Indeed, the decoupling of Einstein equations into wave master equations with a potential provides an instance of such splitting into (frozen) slow DoFs (background potential) over which the linear dynamics of the fast ones (perturbation master functions) evolve. It has been recently shown that these wave equations possess an infinite number of symmetries that correspond to the flow of the infinite hierarchy of Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equations. Starting from these results, we systematically investigate the presence of integrable structures in BH perturbation theory. We first study them in Cauchy slices and then extend the analysis to hyperboloidal foliations. This second step introduces a splitting of the master equation into bulk and boundary contributions, unveiling an underlying structural relation with the slow and fast DoFs. 2. Efficient Massive Black Hole Binary parameter estimation for LISA using Sequential Neural Likelihood

Abstract: LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) is a space mission that has recently entered the implementation phase. The main goal of LISA is to survey, for the first time, the observable universe by detecting low-frequency gravitational waves (GWs). One of the main GW sources that LISA will detect is the coalescence and merger of Massive Black Hole Binaries (MBHBs). In this work, we explore the application of Sequential Neural Likelihood, a simulation-based inference algorithm, to the detection and parameter estimation of MBHBs signals in the LISA data. Instead of sampling from the conventional likelihood function, which typically relies on the assumptions of Gaussianity and stationarity of the noise and requires a forward simulation for each evaluation, this method constructs a surrogate likelihood that is ultimately described by a neural network trained from a dataset of simulations (noise + MBHB). Since the likelihood is independent of the priors, we can iteratively train models that target specific observations in a fraction of the time and computational cost that other traditional and machine learning-based strategies would require. One key aspect of the method is the compression of the data. Because of the iterative nature of the method, we are able to train models to obtain qualitatively similar posteriors with less than 2% of the simulator calls that Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods would require. We compare these posteriors with those obtained from standard techniques and discuss the differences that appear, some of which can be identified as caused by the loss of information from the data compression we use. 3. Gauge-Independent Metric Reconstruction of Perturbations of Vacuum Spherically-Symmetric Spacetimes

Abstract: Perturbation theory of vacuum spherically-symmetric spacetimes (including the cosmological constant) has greatly contributed to the understanding of black holes, relativistic compact stars and even inhomogeneous cosmological models. The perturbative equations can be decoupled in terms of (gauge-invariant) master functions satisfying $1+1$ wave equations. In this work, building on previous work on the structure of the space of master functions and equations, we study the reconstruction of the metric perturbations in terms of the master functions. To that end, we consider the general situation in which the perturbations are driven by an arbitrary energy-momentum tensor. Then, we perform the metric reconstruction in a completely general perturbative gauge. In doing so, we investigate the role of Darboux transformations and Darboux covariance, responsible for the isospectrality between odd and even parity in the absence of matter sources and also of the physical equivalence between the descriptions based on all the possible master equations. We also show that the metric reconstruction can be carried out in terms of any of the possible master functions and that the expressions admit an explicitly covariant form., Comment: 27 pages, comments are welcome

Abstract: LISA, the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, will usher in a new era in gravitational-wave astronomy. As the first anticipated space-based gravitational-wave detector, it will expand our view to the millihertz gravitational-wave sky, where a spectacular variety of interesting new sources abound: from millions of ultra-compact binaries in our Galaxy, to mergers of massive black holes at cosmological distances; from the beginnings of inspirals that will venture into the ground-based detectors' view to the death spiral of compact objects into massive black holes, and many sources in between. Central to realising LISA's discovery potential are waveform models, the theoretical and phenomenological predictions of the pattern of gravitational waves that these sources emit. Abstract: This document presents a summary of the 2023 Terrestrial Very-Long-Baseline Atom Interferometry Workshop hosted by CERN. The workshop brought together experts from around the world to discuss the exciting developments in large-scale atom interferometer (AI) prototypes and their potential for detecting ultralight dark matter and gravitational waves. The primary objective of the workshop was to lay the groundwork for an international TVLBAI proto-collaboration. This collaboration aims to unite researchers from different institutions to strategize and secure funding for terrestrial large-scale AI projects. The ultimate goal is to create a roadmap detailing the design and technology choices for one or more km-scale detectors, which will be operational in the mid-2030s. 8. Universality in Binary Black Hole Dynamics: An Integrability Conjecture

Abstract: The waveform of a binary black hole coalescence appears to be both simple and universal. In this essay we argue that the dynamics should admit a separation into 'fast and slow' degrees of freedom, such that the latter are described by an integrable system of equations, accounting for the simplicity and universality of the waveform. Given that Painlev\'e transcendents are a smoking gun of integrable structures, we propose the Painlev\'e-II transcendent as the key structural element threading a hierarchy of asymptotic models aiming at capturing different (effective) layers in the dynamics. Ward's conjecture relating integrable and (anti)self-dual solutions can provide the avenue to encode background binary black hole data in (non-local) twistor structures., Comment: 17 pages, no figures. 9. Black Hole Greybody Factors from Korteweg-de Vries Integrals: Computation

Abstract: It has recently been shown that the dynamics of perturbed non-rotating black holes (BHs) admits an infinite number of symmetries that are generated by the flow of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. These symmetries lead to an infinite number of conserved quantities that can be obtained as integrals of differential polynomials in the potential appearing in the gauge-invariant master equations describing the BH perturbations, the KdV integrals. These conserved quantities are the same for all the possible potentials, which means that they are invariant under Darboux transformations, and they fully determine the BHs transmission amplitudes, or greybody factors, via a moment problem. In this paper we introduce a new semi-analytical method to obtain the greybody factors associated with BH scattering processes by solving the moment problem using only the KdV integrals. The method is based on the use of Pad\'e approximants and we check it first by comparing with results from the case of a P\"oschl-Teller potential, for which we have analytical expressions for the greybody factors. Abstract: The dynamics of perturbed non-rotating black holes (BHs) can be described in terms of master equations of the wave type with a potential. In the frequency domain, the master equations become time-independent Schr\"odinger equations with no discrete spectrum. It has been recently shown that these wave equations possess an infinite number of symmetries that correspond to the flow of the infinite hierarchy of Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equations. As a consequence, the infinite set of associated conserved quantities, the KdV integrals, are the same for all the different master equations that we can consider. In this paper we show that the BH scattering reflection and transmission coefficients characterizing the continuous spectrum can be fully determined via a moment problem, in such a way that the KdV integrals provide the momenta of a distribution function depending only on the reflection coefficient. We also discuss the existence and uniqueness of solutions, strategies to solve the moment problem, and finally show the case of the P\"oschl-Teller potential where all the steps can be carried out analytically., Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has the potential to reveal wonders about the fundamental theory of nature at play in the extreme gravity regime, where the gravitational interaction is both strong and dynamical. In this white paper, the Fundamental Physics Working Group of the LISA Consortium summarizes the current topics in fundamental physics where LISA observations of GWs can be expected to provide key input. We provide the briefest of reviews to then delineate avenues for future research directions and to discuss connections between this working group, other working groups and the consortium work package teams. Abstract: The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has two scientific objectives of cosmological focus: to probe the expansion rate of the universe, and to understand stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds and their implications for early universe and particle physics, from the MeV to the Planck scale. However, the range of potential cosmological applications of gravitational wave observations extends well beyond these two objectives. This publication presents a summary of the state of the art in LISA cosmology, theory and methods, and identifies new opportunities to use gravitational wave observations by LISA to probe the universe.

Abstract: The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will be a transformative experiment for gravitational wave astronomy, and, as such, it will offer unique opportunities to address many key astrophysical questions in a completely novel way. The synergy with ground-based and space-born instruments in the electromagnetic domain, by enabling multi-messenger observations, will add further to the discovery potential of LISA. The next decade is crucial to prepare the astrophysical community for LISA's first observations. This review outlines the extensive landscape of astrophysical theory, numerical simulations, and astronomical observations that are instrumental for modeling and interpreting the upcoming LISA datastream. To this aim, the current knowledge in three main source classes for LISA is reviewed; ultracompact stellar-mass binaries, massive black hole binaries, and extreme or intermediate mass ratio inspirals. The relevant astrophysical processes and the established modeling techniques are summarized. Likewise, open issues and gaps in our understanding of these sources are highlighted, along with an indication of how LISA could help making progress in the different areas. New research avenues that LISA itself, or its joint exploitation with upcoming studies in the electromagnetic domain, will enable, are also illustrated. Improvements in modeling and analysis approaches, such as the combination of numerical simulations and modern data science techniques, are discussed. This review is intended to be a starting point for using LISA as a new discovery tool for understanding our Universe.

Abstract: We summarize the discussions at a virtual Community Workshop on Cold Atoms in Space concerning the status of cold atom technologies, the prospective scientific and societal opportunities offered by their deployment in space, and the developments needed before cold atoms could be operated in space. The cold atom technologies discussed include atomic clocks, quantum gravimeters and accelerometers, and atom interferometers. Prospective applications include metrology, geodesy and measurement of terrestrial mass change due to, e.g., climate change, and fundamental science experiments such as tests of the equivalence principle, searches for dark matter, measurements of gravitational waves and tests of quantum mechanics. We review the current status of cold atom technologies and outline the requirements for their space qualification, including the development paths and the corresponding technical milestones, and identifying possible pathfinder missions to pave the way for missions to exploit the full potential of cold atoms in space. Abstract: Perturbation theory of vacuum spherically-symmetric spacetimes (including the cosmological constant) has greatly contributed to the understanding of black holes, relativistic compact stars, and even inhomogeneous cosmological models. The perturbative equations can be decoupled in terms of (gauge-invariant) master functions satisfying 1+1 wave equations. In this work, building on previous work on the structure of the space of master functions and equations, we study the reconstruction of the metric perturbations in terms of the master functions. To that end, we consider the general situation in which the perturbations are driven by an arbitrary energy-momentum tensor. Then, we perform the metric reconstruction in a completely general perturbative gauge. In doing so, we investigate the role of Darboux transformations and Darboux covariance, responsible for the isospectrality between odd and even parity in the absence of matter sources, and also of the physical equivalence between the descriptions based on all the possible master equations. We also show that the metric reconstruction can be carried out in terms of any of the possible master functions and that the expressions admit an explicitly covariant form.

Abstract: The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will be a transformative experiment for gravitational wave astronomy, and, as such, it will offer unique opportunities to address many key astrophysical questions in a completely novel way. The synergy with ground-based and space-born instruments in the electromagnetic domain, by enabling multi-messenger observations, will add further to the discovery potential of LISA. The next decade is crucial to prepare the astrophysical community for LISA’s first observations. This review outlines the extensive landscape of astrophysical theory, numerical simulations, and astronomical observations that are instrumental for modeling and interpreting the upcoming LISA datastream. To this aim, the current knowledge in three main source classes for LISA is reviewed; ultra-compact stellar-mass binaries, massive black hole binaries, and extreme or interme-diate mass ratio inspirals. The relevant astrophysical processes and the established modeling techniques are summarized. Likewise, open issues and gaps in our understanding of these sources are highlighted, along with an indication of how LISA could help making progress in the different areas. New research avenues that LISA itself, or its joint exploitation with upcoming studies in the electromagnetic domain, will enable, are also illustrated. Improvements in modeling and analysis approaches, such as the combination of numerical simulations and modern data science techniques, are discussed. 25. Charging of free-falling test masses in orbit due to cosmic rays: Results from LISA Pathfinder

Abstract: A comprehensive summary of the measurements made to characterize test-mass charging due to the space environment during the LISA Pathfinder mission is presented. Measurements of the residual charge of the test mass after release by the grabbing and positioning mechanism show that the initial charge of the test masses was negative after all releases, leaving the test mass with a potential in the range from −12 to −512. Variations in the neutral test-mass charging rate between 21.7 and 30.7es−1 were observed over the course of the 17-month science operations produced by cosmic ray flux changes including a Forbush decrease associated with a small solar energetic particle event. A dependence of the cosmic ray charging rate on the test-mass potential between −30.2 and −40.3es−1V−1 was observed resulting in an equilibrium test-mass potential between 670 and 960 mV, and this is attributed to a contribution to charging from low-energy electrons emitted from the gold surfaces of the gravitational reference sensor. Data from the onboard particle detector show a reliable correlation with the charging rate and with other environmental monitors of the cosmic ray flux. This correlation is exploited to extrapolate test-mass charging rates to a 20-year period giving useful insight into the expected range of charging rate that may be observed in the LISA mission.

Abstract: The dynamics of perturbed nonrotating black holes (BHs) can be described in terms of master equations of the wave type with a potential. In the frequency domain, the master equations become time-independent Schrödinger equations with no discrete spectrum. It has been recently shown that these wave equations possess an infinite number of symmetries that correspond to the flow of the infinite hierarchy of Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equations. As a consequence, the infinite set of associated conserved quantities, the KdV integrals, are the same for all the different master equations that we can consider. In this paper we show that the BH scattering reflection and transmission coefficients characterizing the continuous spectrum can be fully determined via a moment problem, in such a way that the KdV integrals provide the momenta of a distribution function depending only on the reflection coefficient. We also discuss the existence and uniqueness of solutions, strategies to solve the moment problem, and finally show the case of the Pöschl-Teller potential where all the steps can be carried out analytically.

27. Black hole greybody factors from Korteweg-de Vries integrals: Computation

Abstract: It has recently been shown that the dynamics of perturbed nonrotating black holes (BHs) admits an infinite number of symmetries that are generated by the flow of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. These symmetries lead to an infinite number of conserved quantities that can be obtained as integrals of differential polynomials in the potential appearing in the gauge-invariant master equations describing the BH perturbations, the KdV integrals. These conserved quantities are the same for all the possible potentials, which means that they are invariant under Darboux transformations, and they fully determine the BHs transmission amplitudes, or greybody factors, via a moment problem. In this paper we introduce a new semianalytical method to obtain the greybody factors associated with BH scattering processes by solving the moment problem using only the KdV integrals. The method is based on the use of Padé approximants and we check it first by comparing with results from the case of a Pöschl-Teller potential, for which we have analytical expressions for the greybody factors. Then, we apply it to the case of a Schwarzschild BH and compare with results from computations based on the Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin (WKB) approximation. It turns out that the new method provides accurate results for the BH greybody factors for all frequencies. The method is also computationally very efficient.

28. Universality in binary black hole dynamics: An integrability conjecture

Abstract: The waveform of a binary black hole coalescence appears to be both simple and universal. In this essay we argue that the dynamics should admit a separation into “fast and slow” degrees of freedom, such that the latter are described by an integrable system of equations, accounting for the simplicity and universality of the waveform. Given that Painlevé transcendents are a smoking gun of integrable structures, we propose the Painlevé-II transcendent as the key structural element threading a hierarchy of asymptotic models aiming at capturing different (effective) layers in the dynamics. Ward’s conjecture relating integrable and (anti-)self-dual solutions can provide the avenue to encode background binary black hole data in (nonlocal) twistor structures.

Abstract: We present a study of the tilt-to-length coupling noise during the LISA Pathfinder mission and how it depended on the system’s alignment. Tilt-to-length coupling noise is the unwanted coupling of angular and lateral spacecraft or test mass motion into the primary interferometric displacement readout. It was one of the major noise sources in the LISA Pathfinder mission and is likewise expected to be a primary noise source in LISA. We demonstrate here that a recently derived and published analytical model describes the dependency of the LISA Pathfinder tilt-to-length coupling noise on the alignment of the two freely falling test masses. This was verified with the data taken before and after the realignments performed in March (engineering days) and June 2016, and during a two-day experiment in February 2017 (long cross-talk experiment). The latter was performed with the explicit goal of testing the tilt-to-length coupling noise dependency on the test mass alignment. Using the analytical model, we show that all realignments performed during the mission were only partially successful and explain the reasons why. In addition to the analytical model, we computed another physical tilt-to-length coupling model via a minimizing routine making use of the long cross-talk experiment data. A similar approach could prove useful for the LISA mission.

To view a copy of this licence, visit http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/., The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will be a transformative experiment for gravitational wave astronomy, and, as such, it will offer unique opportunities to address many key astrophysical questions in a completely novel way. The synergy with ground-based and space-born instruments in the electromagnetic domain, by enabling multi-messenger observations, will add further to the discovery potential of LISA. The next decade is crucial to prepare the astrophysical community for LISA’s first observations. This review outlines the extensive landscape of astrophysical theory, numerical simulations, and astronomical observations that are instrumental for modeling and interpreting the upcoming LISA datastream. To this aim, the current knowledge in three main source classes for LISA is reviewed; ultra-compact stellar-mass binaries, massive black hole binaries, and extreme or interme-diate mass ratio inspirals. The relevant astrophysical processes and the established modeling techniques are summarized. Likewise, open issues and gaps in our understanding of these sources are highlighted, along with an indication of how LISA could help making progress in the different areas. New research avenues that LISA itself, or its joint exploitation with upcoming studies in the electromagnetic domain, will enable, are also illustrated. Improvements in modeling and analysis approaches, such as the combination of numerical simulations and modern data science techniques, are discussed. Abstract: Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will be a transformative experiment for gravitational wave astronomy as it will offer unique opportunities to address many key astrophysical questions in a completely novel way. The synergy with ground-based and other space-based instruments in the electromagnetic domain, by enabling multi-messenger observations, will add further to the discovery potential of LISA. The next decade is crucial to prepare the astrophysical community for LISA's first observations. This review outlines the extensive landscape of astrophysical theory, numerical simulations, and astronomical observations that are instrumental for modeling and interpreting the upcoming LISA datastream. To this aim, the current knowledge in three main source classes for LISA is reviewed: ultra-compact stellar-mass binaries, massive black hole binaries, and extreme or intermediate mass ratio inspirals. The relevant astrophysical processes and the established modeling techniques are summarized. Likewise, open issues and gaps in our understanding of these sources are highlighted, along with an indication of how LISA could help make progress in the different areas. New research avenues that LISA itself, or its joint exploitation with studies in the electromagnetic domain, will enable, are also illustrated. Improvements in modeling and analysis approaches, such as the combination of numerical simulations and modern data science techniques, are discussed. Abstract: The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has the potential to reveal wonders about the fundamental theory of nature at play in the extreme gravity regime, where the gravitational interaction is both strong and dynamical. In this white paper, the Fundamental Physics Working Group of the LISA Consortium summarizes the current topics in fundamental physics where LISA observations of gravitational waves can be expected to provide key input. We provide the briefest of reviews to then delineate avenues for future research directions and to discuss connections between this working group, other working groups and the consortium work package teams. These connections must be developed for LISA to live up to its science potential in these areas.

Abstract: We summarise the discussions at a virtual Community Workshop on Cold Atoms in Space concerning the status of cold atom technologies, the prospective scientific and societal opportunities offered by their deployment in space, and the developments needed before cold atoms could be operated in space. The cold atom technologies discussed include atomic clocks, quantum gravimeters and accelerometers, and atom interferometers. Prospective applications include metrology, geodesy and measurement of terrestrial mass change due to, e.g., climate change, and fundamental science experiments such as tests of the equivalence principle, searches for dark matter, measurements of gravitational waves and tests of quantum mechanics. We review the current status of cold atom technologies and outline the requirements for their space qualification, including the development paths and the corresponding technical milestones, and identifying possible pathfinder missions to pave the way for missions to exploit the full potential of cold atoms in space. Finally, we present a first draft of a possible road-map for achieving these goals, that we propose for discussion by the interested cold atom, Earth Observation, fundamental physics and other prospective scientific user communities, together with the European Space Agency (ESA) and national space and research funding agencies.

Abstract: We present an in depth analysis of the transient events, or glitches, detected at a rate of about one per day in the differential acceleration data of LISA Pathfinder. We show that these glitches fall in two rather distinct categories: fast transients in the interferometric motion readout on one side, and true force transient events on the other. The former are fast and rare in ordinary conditions. The second may last from seconds to hours and constitute the majority of the glitches. We present an analysis of the physical and statistical properties of both categories, including a cross-analysis with other time series like magnetic fields, temperature, and other dynamical variables. Based on these analyses we discuss the possible sources of the force glitches and identify the most likely, among which the outgassing environment surrounding the test-masses stands out. We discuss the impact of these findings on the LISA design and operation, and some risk mitigation measures, including experimental studies that may be conducted on the ground, aimed at clarifying some of the questions left open by our analysis.

Abstract: The exploration of the universe has recently entered a new era thanks to the multi-messenger paradigm, characterized by a continuous increase in the quantity and quality of experimental data that is obtained by the detection of the various cosmic messengers (photons, neutrinos, cosmic rays and gravitational waves) from numerous origins. They give us information about their sources in the universe and the properties of the intergalactic medium. Moreover, multi-messenger astronomy opens up the possibility to search for phenomenological signatures of quantum gravity. On the one hand, the most energetic events allow us to test our physical theories at energy regimes which are not directly accessible in accelerators; on the other hand, tiny effects in the propagation of very high energy particles could be amplified by cosmological distances. After decades of merely theoretical investigations, the possibility of obtaining phenomenological indications of Planck-scale effects is a revolutionary step in the quest for a quantum theory of gravity, but it requires cooperation between different communities of physicists (both theoretical and experimental). This review, prepared within the COST Action CA18108 “Quantum gravity phenomenology in the multi-messenger approach”, is aimed at promoting this cooperation by giving a state-of-the art account of the interdisciplinary expertise that is needed in the effective search of quantum gravity footprints in the production, propagation and detection of cosmic messengers.

Abstract: K. G. Arun et al., The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has the potential to reveal wonders about the fundamental theory of nature at play in the extreme gravity regime, where the gravitational interaction is both strong and dynamical. In this white paper, the Fundamental Physics Working Group of the LISA Consortium summarizes the current topics in fundamental physics where LISA observations of gravitational waves can be expected to provide key input. We provide the briefest of reviews to then delineate avenues for future research directions and to discuss connections between this working group, other working groups and the consortium work package teams. These connections must be developed for LISA to live up to its science potential in these areas., E.
