Phlebotomine sand flies are vectors of Leishmania parasites that cause leishmaniases. Both sexes of sand flies feed on plants primarily for sugars, although the chemical cues that mediate attraction to host plants remain largely unknown. Previously, using coupled gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry, the authors identified several volatile organic compounds (VOCs) common to preferred host plants for selected Afrotropical sand flies from the Fabaceae family. Of the identified volatiles, the significance of the monoterpenes linalool oxide, ocimene and p‐cymene and the benzenoid m‐cresol, p‐cresol in sand fly behaviour is unknown. In olfactometer assays, the authors tested these compounds singly and in blends for their attractiveness to Phlebotomus duboscqi, cutaneous leishmaniasis vector in Kenya. In dose–response assays, single compounds increased the responses of males and females over controls, but their optimum attractive doses varied between the sexes. Two five‐component blends, referred to as Blend‐f and Blend‐m for females and males respectively, were formulated and tested in dose–response assays against 1‐octen‐3‐ol (positive control). The results of the present study showed that males and females were significantly attracted to varying levels of the two blends. In pairwise assays, the authors evaluated the most attractive of these blends to each sex (i.e., Blend Am for male against Blend Bf for female), revealing that males were attracted to both blends at varying levels, whereas females were indifferent. The genus Stasimopus is endemic to South Africa but has never undergone a phylogeographic review. This study aims to unravel the phylogeographic patterns and history of the many Stasimopus species which occur in the greater Karoo region. A fossil-calibrated phylogeny was produced based on three gene regions (CO1, 16S and EF-1ɣ) for Stasimopus (Cor-k-lid trapdoor spiders) specimens collected in the Karoo region, to infer dates of origin and diversification. Demographic analyses were performed on species with sufficient sample sizes (> 4). Haplotype networks were constructed for each gene region and plotted on a map to infer phylogeographic patterns. Lastly, Mantel tests were performed to test for isolation by distance. It was found that 15 species occur in the Karoo and that the genus radiation in the area is in the early Palaeocene. Most diversification occurred between the late Eocene and the Miocene, coinciding with significant changes in climate. Several species show signals of demographic expansions. Isolation by distance was detected, but only with a slight correlation. It is apparent that aridification has played a vital role in the diversification of the genus in the Karoo region. This is a shared biogeographic influence between the mygalomorph fauna of the Karoo and arid region of western Australia. Stasimopus has radiated from the late Eocene and through the Miocene resulting in 15 extant species in the region. The Tankwa Karoo has been identified as a possible Pleistocene glacial cycle refugia for the species S. leipoldti . Many of the species in the Karoo are short-range endemics, making them of high conservation concern. The genus Stasimopus Simon 1892 is endemic to Southern Africa, but is historically largely understudied. This paper provides a taxonomic revision for the Stasimopus species of the Karoo region of South Africa and includes the description of nine new species (S. dylani sp. nov., S. finni sp. nov., S. hamartia sp. nov., S. ignis sp. nov., S. karooensis sp. nov., S. malesociatus sp. nov., S. tera sp. nov., S. theaei sp. nov. and S. venterstadensis sp. nov.). A description of the genetically matched S. maraisi Hewitt 1914 male is provided. The original S. maraisi male is designated to its own new species (S. malesociatus sp. nov.). An identification key is provided for species occurring in the Karoo region. This is the first integrative taxonomy for the genus that includes morphological, geometric morphometric as well as genetic data.

Purpose or Objective: Primary sarcoma of the urinary bladder (SUB) is a rare but aggressive form of bladder cancer (BCa). Available evidence on SUB is limited to case reports and small series. The aim of the present multi-institutional study was to assess the clinical features, treatments, and outcomes of patients with SUB., Materials and Methods: Using a standardized database, 7 institutions retrospectively collected the demographics, risk factors, clinical presentation, treatment modalities and follow-up data on patients with SUB between January 1994 and September 2021. The main inclusion criteria included BCa with soft tissue tumor histology and sarcomatoid differentiation., Results: Fifty-three patients (38 men and 15 women) were identified. Median follow-up was 18 months (range 1-263 months). Median age at presentation was 69 years (range 16-89 years). Twenty-six percent of patients had a prior history of pelvic radiotherapy (RT), and 37% were previous smokers. The main presenting symptoms at diagnosis were hematuria (52%), pelvic pain (27%), and both hematuria and pelvic pain (10%). American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) 8 th edition stage II, III and IV at diagnosis were 21%, 63% and 16%, respectively. Treatment modalities included surgery alone (45%), surgery plus neo- or adjuvant-chemotherapy (17%), surgery plus neo- or adjuvant-RT (11%), RT with concurrent chemotherapy (4%), neo-adjuvant chemotherapy plus surgery plus adjuvant RT (2%) and palliative treatment (21%). Rates of local and distant recurrences were 49% and 37%, respectively. Five-year overall survival and progression-free survival (PFS) were 66.5% and 37.6%, respectively. No statistically significant differences in PFS between the treatment modalities were observed., Conclusions: Primary SUB is a heterogeneous disease group, commonly presenting at advanced stages and exhibiting aggressive disease evolution. In contrast to urothelial carcinoma, the primary pattern of recurrence of SUB is local, suggesting the need for multimodal approaches. Continuous international collaborative efforts seem warranted to provide guidance on how to best tailor treatments based on SUB-specific indices.

The Karoo region of South Africa is a unique and sensitive ecosystem which is facing pressure for development due to economic incentives such as mining, farming and shale gas exploration. The species diversity of many taxa in the area is largely unknown. A phylogenetic analysis of the cork-lid trapdoor spider genus, Stasimopus (Stasimopidae) was undertaken in order to gain insight into the relationships between the species that may be present in the area. The species within Stasimopus are challenging to identify and define using traditional morphological methods due to a high degree of morphological conservatism within the genus. For this reason, multiple coalescent based species delimitation methods were used to attempt to determine the species present for Stasimopus in the region which was tested against the morphological identifications and genetic clades (based on CO1, 16S and EF-1ɣ). We tested single-locus methods Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery (ABGD), Bayesian implementation of Poisson Tree Processes (bPTP) and General Mixed Yule- Coalescent (GMYC), as well as multi-locus Brownie. The phylogenetic analysis of Stasimopus in the Karoo showed that there is a high degree of genetic diversity within the genus. The species delimitation results proved unfruitful for the genus, as they appear to delimit population structure rather than species for most methods. Spinal cord injuries affect nearly five to ten individuals per million every year. Spinal cord injury causes damage to the nerves, muscles, and the tissue surrounding the spinal cord. Depending on the severity, spinal injuries are linked to degeneration of axons and myelin, resulting in neuronal impairment and skeletal muscle weakness and atrophy. The protection of neurons and promotion of myelin regeneration during spinal cord injury is important for recovery of function following spinal cord injury. Current treatments have little to no effect on spinal cord injury and neurogenic muscle loss. Clemastine, an Food and Drug Administration-approved antihistamine drug, reduces inflammation, protects cells, promotes remyelination, and preserves myelin integrity. Recent clinical evidence suggests that clemastine can decrease the loss of axons after spinal cord injury, stimulating the differentiation of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells into mature oligodendrocytes that are capable of myelination. While clemastine can aid not only in the remyelination and preservation of myelin sheath integrity, it also protects neurons. However, its role in neurogenic muscle loss remains unclear. This review discusses the pathophysiology of spinal cord injury, and the role of clemastine in the protection of neurons, myelin, and axons as well as attenuation of skeletal muscle loss following spinal cord injury., Competing Interests: None
