Background: Family socioeconomic indicators (education, occupation, and household income) are key determinants influencing children's physical activity (PA). This study aims to systematically review the current research about the association between family socioeconomic indicators and PA among primary school-aged children and to quantify the distribution of reported associations by childs' and parents' sex and according to analysis and assessment methods. Methods: A systematic literature research in multiple scientific databases (MEDLINE via PubMed, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, SPORTDiscus and ERIC) was performed for literature published between 1st January 2010 and 31st March 2022. Only studies reporting statistical associations between an SES indicator of at least one parent (education, occupation, income, or an SES index) and different types and intensities of PA in primary school-aged children (6 to 12 years) were included in the analysis. The distributions of the reported associations were evaluated across and differentiated by sub-group analysis of assessment methods (objectively measured vs. self-reported PA) and analysis methods (univariate vs. multivariate models). Results: Overall, 93 studies reported in 77 publications were included in this review. Most of the studies were conducted in Europe and used self-reports (questionnaires) to assess PA. Most studies used only a single SES indicator (commonly maternal education), and only two studies calculated an SES index. The majority of the studies focused on moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), total physical activity (TPA), and organized physical activity (OPA). Results showed predominantly positive associations between SES indicators and OPA. In contrast, results regarding different intensities of daily PA (TPA, LPA, MPA, MVPA, VPA, LTPA) were heterogeneous, with overwhelmingly no associations. Conclusion: Overall, the results expand the knowledge about the association between family socioeconomic indicators and children's PA and disprove the hypothesis of a clear positive association. However, large multicenter studies are lacking using a real SES index as a predictor and analyzing gender-specific multivariate models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Digitized assessments have a considerable potential to guide clinicial decision making and monitor progress and disease trajectories. The Timed Up and Go test (TUG) has been long established for assessment in geriatric medicine and instrumented versions (iTUG) have been developed and validated. This scoping review includes studies that applied the iTUG and aims to identify use cases to show where and how iTUG assessment could guide interventions and clinical management. The literature search was limited to peer-reviewed studies that performed pre- and post-intervention measurements with a 3-meter TUG instrumented with body-worn technology in samples of at least 20 subjects aged 60+ years. Of 3018 identified articles 20 were included. Four clinical use cases were identified: stratification for subsequent therapy, monitoring of disease or treatment-associated changes and evaluation of interventions in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (1), and patients with Parkinson’s disease (2); monitoring after joint replacement surgery (3), and evaluation after different exercise and rehabilitation interventions (4). The included studies show diversity in terms of iTUG technology and procedures. The identified use cases highlight clinical relevance and high potential for the clinical application of the iTUG. A consensual approach as well as comprehensive reporting would help to further exploit the potential of the iTUG to support clinical management. Future studies should investigate the benefits of segmental iTUG analysis, responsiveness and participants’ perspectives on clinically meaningful changes in iTUG. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this systematic review and meta‐analysis (PROSPERO ID: CRD42021250467) was to evaluate the effects of exercise on low‐trauma overall and major osteoporotic fractures (hip, spine, forearm, or humerus fractures) and to determine the corresponding effect of supervision of the exercise program. Our systematic search of six literature databases according to the PRISMA guideline was conducted from January 1, 2013 (ie, date of our last search) to May 22, 2021, and included controlled clinical exercise trials with (i) individuals aged ≥45 years, (ii) cohorts without therapies/diseases related to fractures, (iii) observation periods of ≥3 months, and (iv) the number of low‐trauma fractures listed separately for the exercise (EG) and control (CG) groups. We included 20 intervention studies with 21 EGs and 20 CGs comprising a pooled number of participant‐years of n = 11.836 in the EG and n = 11.275 in the CG. The mixed‐effects conditional Poisson regression revealed significant effects of exercise on low‐trauma overall incidence (rate) ratio (IR 0.67, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 0.51–0.87) and major osteoporotic fractures IR (0.69, 95% CI 0.52–0.92). Heterogeneity between the trials was moderate for low‐trauma overall (I2 = 40%) and negligible (I2 < 1%) for major osteoporotic fractures. Supervision of the exercise program plays a significant role in the reductions of overall and major osteoporotic fractures with IR about twice as favorable in the predominately supervised (IR 0.44; 95% CI 0.27–0.73 and 0.38; 0.19–0.76) versus the predominately non‐supervised exercise trials (IR 0.83; 95% CI 0.60–1.14 and 0.82; 0.64–1.05). In summary, the present study provides evidence for the positive effect of exercise on low‐trauma overall and major osteoporotic fractures in middle aged to older adults. Supervision of the exercise program is a crucial aspect in exercise programs on fracture reduction. Thus, home‐based exercise protocols should increasingly implement online classes to ensure widely consistent supervision and monitoring of the exercise program. © 2022 The Authors.
