An increase in the proportion of elderly in the population has been reported. Aging is often associated with a reduction in an individual’s general health status, which may have a negative influence on oral health. More elderly also retain their own teeth longer. These factors may lead to a change in the need for oral health care. In order to plan for future dental health services, oral health status data in the population are necessary. This thesis aimed to describe the periodontal and chemosensory status in a 65-year-old population living in Oslo, in addition to associated sociodemographic, behavioral, and general health factors. Furthermore, the participants’ awareness of chemosensory disorders and the impact of periodontitis on quality of life, were investigated. The results showed that periodontitis was present in half of the participants. One-third had reduced smell function and one-fourth had reduced taste function. Risk indicators for periodontitis and smell and taste disorders were identified. The results showed a weak association between periodontitis and oral health-related quality of life, and low awareness of reduced smell and taste function among affected individuals.
