In an effort to promote sustainability and reduce carbon footprint, the Universidad Estatal Amazónica (UEA) is considering the implementation of a mini hydroelectric plant (MHP) on its campus as a viable and sustainable renewable energy source. A study of the Puyo River’s flow near the campus, cost-benefit analysis (CBA), and environmental impacts were evaluated using standardized Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) methods. The analyses revealed an average annual flow rate of 25,85 m³/s at the proposed site, allowing for a generating capacity of 280 kW. Implementing a hydroelectric plant on the university campus is technically feasible and economically viable, with significant environmental benefits. The project will not only reduce the university's carbon footprint but also serve as an educational model for promoting sustainable practices. The research highlights the importance of integrating economic, technical, and environmental considerations in planning renewable energy infrastructure in the education sector., En un esfuerzo por promover la sostenibilidad y reducir la huella de carbono, la Universidad Estatal Amazónica (UEA) está considerando la implementación de una mini planta hidroeléctrica (MPH) en su campus como una fuente de energía renovable viable y sostenible. Se realizó el estudio del caudal del río puyo cerca al campus, análisis de coste-beneficio (ACB), y se evaluaron los impactos ambientales mediante métodos estandarizados de Evaluación de Impacto Ambiental (EIA). Los análisis revelaron un caudal medio anual de 25,85 m³/s en el sitio propuesto, permitiendo una capacidad de generación de 280 kW. La implementación de una central hidroeléctrica en el campus universitario es técnicamente viable y económicamente factible, con beneficios ambientales significativos. El proyecto no solo reducirá la huella de carbono de la universidad, sino que también servirá como un modelo educativo para la promoción de prácticas sostenibles. La investigación destaca la importancia de integrar consideraciones económicas, técnicas y ambientales en la planificación de infraestructuras energéticas renovables en el sector educativo.

The mass adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education raises significant questions about its impact on students' critical skills and autonomous learning. This quantitative study, based on surveys of 65 teachers, investigates the consequences of reliance on AI in education. Using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and linear regression, we examined how the overuse of AI to complete academic tasks influences student achievement. The results show a significant correlation (F(1, 63) = 5.12, p < .001) between dependence on AI and the development of critical skills, with a notable decrease in learning autonomy and problem-solving ability. Regression analysis confirmed that reliance on AI negatively predicts academic performance, underscoring the compromise of autonomous learning and the loss of research skills. This study concludes that, although AI offers useful tools for education, its inappropriate use can have adverse effects on the holistic development of students., La adopción masiva de la Inteligencia Artificial (IA) en educación plantea preguntas significativas sobre su impacto en las habilidades críticas y el aprendizaje autónomo de los estudiantes. Este estudio cuantitativo, basado en encuestas aplicadas a 65 docentes, investiga las consecuencias de la dependencia de la IA en la educación. Utilizando análisis de varianza (ANOVA) y regresión lineal, se examinó cómo el uso excesivo de la IA para completar tareas académicas influye en el rendimiento de los estudiantes. Los resultados muestran una correlación significativa (F(1, 63) = 5.12, p < .001)entre la dependencia de la IA y el desarrollo de habilidades críticas, con una disminución notable en la autonomía de aprendizaje y en la capacidad de resolución de problemas. El análisis de regresión confirmó que la dependencia de la IA predice negativamente el rendimiento académico, subrayando el compromiso del aprendizaje autónomo y la pérdida de habilidades de investigación. Este estudio concluye que, aunque la IA ofrece herramientas útiles para la educación, su uso inadecuado puede tener efectos adversos en el desarrollo integral de los estudiantes.

This dissertation consists of an ethnographic study of clinical social workers inside detention facilities for unaccompanied children in the Southwestern United States. In the U.S., unaccompanied children are detained by Border Patrol or the Bureau of Immigration Customs Enforcement (BICE) and then transferred to private nonprofit facilities funded by the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). Since the inception of the ORR system in 2003, over 600,000 children have been detained in enclosed facilities. This anthropological study sheds light on the complex articulations of care by professionals inside these detention facilities that are tasked with providing mental health and child advocacy within compulsory programs. The dissertation captures the voices of workers employed inside these facilities who currently or previously provided therapy, released recommendations, and performed child advocacy for children in detention awaiting reunification with a family member in the U.S. This research provides a critical perspective on the reception context, specifically on unaccompanied children and, more broadly, on governmentality and bordering practices. This research also highlights the various forms of disciplining and surveillance endured by NGO workers. Finally, this project also has an applied component. Findings from this dissertation may also inform immediate efforts to improve reception services for unaccompanied children and staff as they continue to face ongoing forms of violence within the detention system and after their release.

The purpose of this research focuses on understanding the socioeconomic situation of women affiliated with the Rural Social Security in the Mayancela medical dispensary, located in the parish of Sinincay, in the Cuenca canton, in the year 2023. This is done based on the postulates of the Human Scale Development Theory and the Ecological Theory. To achieve this, 150 questionnaires were applied to affiliated and retired women in this medical dispensary, which were the product of the application of simple random sampling. The approach used in this research was quantitative with a non-experimental - transversal nature and responds to a descriptive research design. Finally, the population under study corresponds to adult and older Ecuadorian women from rural areas, whose main activities are agriculture, livestock and crafts. These women also have the support of pensions, bonuses and remittances, which help provide adequate income to cover their fundamental needs. The analysis highlights that, according to the findings, the income of these women is lower than their expenses, underscoring the importance of additional sources of financial support to maintain a satisfactory economic balance.

Wildlife must adapt to human presence to survive in the Anthropocene, so it is critical to understand species responses to humans in different contexts. We used camera trapping as a lens to view mammal responses to changes in human activity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Across 163 species sampled in 102 projects around the world, changes in the amount and timing of animal activity varied widely. Under higher human activity, mammals were less active in undeveloped areas but unexpectedly more active in developed areas while exhibiting greater nocturnality. Carnivores were most sensitive, showing the strongest decreases in activity and greatest increases in nocturnality. Wildlife managers must consider how habituation and uneven sensitivity across species may cause fundamental differences in human–wildlife interactions along gradients of human influence.

Tumor dedifferentiated cells exhibit a higher capacity to survive to chemo and radiotherapies and have the ability to incite tumor relapse. Inducing cancer cell differentiation would abolish their self-renewal and invasive capacity and could be combined with the current standard of care, especially in poorly differentiated and aggressive tumors (with worst prognosis). However, differentiation therapy is still in its early stages and the intrinsic complexity of solid tumor heterogeneity demands innovative approaches in order to be efficiently translated into the clinic. We demonstrate here that microRNA 203, a potent driver of differentiation in pluripotent stem cells (ESCs and iPSCs), promotes the differentiation of mammary gland tumor cells. Combining mouse in vivo approaches and both mouse and human-derived tridimensional organoid cultures, we report that miR-203 influences the self-renewal capacity, plasticity and differentiation potential of breast cancer cells and prevents tumor cell growth in vivo. As the space industry continues to grow rapidly, the development of reusable launch vehicles has become crucial in achieving cost-effective and sustainable access to space. Payload capacity optimisation has been at the forefront of this effort, leading to a renewed interest in hammerhead or bulbous payload fairing (PLF) configurations. These designs feature a larger diameter in the PLF than in the rest of the launch vehicle, enabling the same structure to be used for large payloads. However, the transonic regime poses unique challenges for these PLFs due to their susceptibility to flow separation and strong pressure fluctuations. This master thesis investigates the influence of nose and boat-tail geometries on flow phe-nomena, particularly shock wave generation, around hammerhead configurations in transonic conditions. The research was conducted through three distinct experimental campaigns in the transonic wind tunnel TST-27 at the high-speed laboratory of TU Delft, employing schlieren, oil flow, and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) techniques. The study revealed notable insights into the aerodynamics of the hammerhead PLF con-figurations. Boat-tails set at five and 15-degree angles were observed to broaden the range of shock wave oscillations, introducing an additional shock wave that could occasionally merge with existing ones. Moreover, the conic nose design induced higher shock wave oscillations, while the bi-conic nose introduced an extra shock wave compared to the conic and ogive noses. The study also found that altering the nose shape while keeping the boat-tail constant, or vice versa, resulted in similar effects on flow dynamics. These findings underscore the critical role that nose and boat-tail geometries play in shap-ing the aerodynamic behaviour of hammerhead PLF configurations. El envejecimiento conlleva un deterioro progresivo a nivel comunicativo. La identificación de alteraciones en el lenguaje de adultos mayores podría ayudar a prevenir o ralentizar el desarrollo de un posible trastorno neurocognitivo. El objetivo del trabajo es evaluar las manifestaciones psicopatológicas en el lenguaje y la comunicación mediante un protocolo de evaluación psicopatológica en un grupo control de sujetos pareado por edad y sexo a un grupo personas con deterioro cognitivo leve. La conclusión a la que se llega es que la anomia, las perseveraciones, el lenguaje disgregado, el concretismo y el paragramatismo son posibles indicadores precoces de deterioro cognitivo.
