We report investigations of the magnetic textures in periodic multilayers [Pt(1 nm)/(CoFeB(0.8 nm)/Ru(1.4 nm)]10 using polarised neutron reflectometry (PNR) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The multilayers are known to host skyrmions stabilized by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions induced by broken inversion symmetry and spin–orbit coupling at the asymmetric interfaces. From depth-dependent PNR measurements, we observed well-defined structural features and obtained the layer-resolved magnetization profiles. The in-plane magnetization of the CoFeB layers calculated from fitting of the PNR profiles is found to be in excellent agreement with magnetometry data. Using SANS as a bulk probe of the entire multilayer, we observe long-period magnetic stripe domains and skyrmion ensembles with full orientational disorder at room temperature. No sign of skyrmions is found below 250 K, which we suggest is due to an increase of an effective magnetic anisotropy in the CoFeB layer on cooling that suppresses skyrmion stability. Using polarised SANS at room temperature, we prove the existence of pure Néel-type windings in both stripe domain and skyrmion regimes. No Bloch-type winding admixture, i.e. an indication for hybrid windings, is detected within the measurement sensitivity, in good agreement with expectations according to our micromagnetic modelling of the multilayers. Our findings using neutron techniques provide valuable microscopic insights into the rich magnetic behavior of skyrmion-hosting multilayers, which are essential for the advancement of future skyrmion-based spintronic devices.

Abstract 3D printing technologies such as fused filament fabrication (FFF) offer great opportunities to enable the fabrication of complex geometries without access to a workshop or knowledge of machining. By adding filler materials to the raw filaments used for FFF, the material properties of the plastic can be adapted. With the addition of neutron absorbing particles, filaments can be created that enable 3D printing of neutron shielding with arbitrary geometry. Two materials for FFF are presented with different mixing ratios of hexagonal Boron nitride (h-BN) and Polylactic acid (PLA). BNPLA25 with 25 %wt h-BN and BNPLA35 with 35 %wt h-BN are compared to the commercially available Addbor N25 material. To qualify the applicability of BNPLA25 and BNPLA35 as shielding material for neutron instrumentation, such as neutron imaging, we investigated the overall neutron attenuation, the influence of non-optimized print settings, as well as characterized the incoherent neutron scattering and the microstructure using neutron imaging, and time-of-flight small-angle-neutron-scattering. Finally, the tensile strength of the material was determined in standardized tensile tests. The measured neutron attenuation shows excellent agreement with analytical calculations, thus validating both the material composition and the calculation method. Approximately 6 mm (8 mm) BNPLA35 are needed for $$1\times 10^{-3}$$ 1 × 10 - 3 transmission of a cold (thermal) neutron beam. Lack of extrusion due to suboptimal print settings can be compensated by increased thickness, clearly visible defects can be mitigated by 11–18% increase in thickness. Incoherent scattering is shown to be strongly reduced compared to pure PLA. The tensile strength of the material is shown not to be impacted by the h-BN filler. The good agreement between the measured attenuation and calculation, combined with the adoption of safety factor enables the quick and easy development as well as the performance estimation of shielding components. BNPLA is uniquely suited for 3D printing neutron shielding because of the combination of non-abrasive h-BN particles in standard PLA, which results in a filament that can be printed with almost any off-the-shelf printer and virtually no prior experience in 3D printing. This mitigates the slightly lower attenuation observed as compared to filaments containing $${\hbox {B}_{4}}\hbox {C}$$ B 4 C , which is highly abrasive and requires extensive additive manufacturing experience.

Abstract Magnetic skyrmions, topological vortex-like spin textures, garner significant interest due to their unique properties and potential applications in nanotechnology. While they typically form a hexagonal crystal with distinct internal magnetisation textures known as Bloch- or Néel-type, recent theories suggest the possibility for direct transitions between skyrmion crystals of different lattice structures and internal textures. To date however, experimental evidence for these potentially useful phenomena have remained scarce. Here, we discover the polar tetragonal magnet EuNiGe3 to host two hybrid skyrmion phases, each with distinct internal textures characterised by anisotropic combinations of Bloch- and Néel-type windings. Variation of the magnetic field drives a direct transition between the two phases, with the modification of the hybrid texture concomitant with a hexagonal-to-square skyrmion crystal transformation. We explain these observations with a theory that includes the key ingredients of momentum-resolved Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions that compete at the observed low symmetry magnetic skyrmion crystal wavevectors. Our findings underscore the potential of polar magnets with rich interaction schemes as promising for discovering new topological magnetic phases.

Abstract Monomeric alpha-synuclein (aSyn) is a well characterised protein that importantly binds to lipids. aSyn monomers assemble into amyloid fibrils which are localised to lipids and organelles in insoluble structures found in Parkinson’s disease patient’s brains. Previous work to address pathological aSyn-lipid interactions has focused on using synthetic lipid membranes, which lack the complexity of physiological lipid membranes. Here, we use physiological membranes in the form of synaptic vesicles (SV) isolated from rodent brain to demonstrate that lipid-associated aSyn fibrils are more easily taken up into iPSC-derived cortical i3Neurons. Lipid-associated aSyn fibril characterisation reveals that SV lipids are an integrated part of the fibrils and while their fibril morphology differs from aSyn fibrils alone, the core fibril structure remains the same, suggesting the lipids lead to the increase in fibril uptake. Furthermore, SV enhance the aggregation rate of aSyn, yet increasing the SV:aSyn ratio causes a reduction in aggregation propensity. We finally show that aSyn fibrils disintegrate SV, whereas aSyn monomers cause clustering of SV using small angle neutron scattering and high-resolution imaging. Disease burden on neurons may be impacted by an increased uptake of lipid-associated aSyn which could enhance stress and pathology, which in turn may have fatal consequences for neurons.

Abstract The kinetics of water transfer between the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and upper critical solution temperature (UCST) thermoresponsive blocks in about 10 nm thin films of a diblock copolymer is monitored by in situ neutron reflectivity. The UCST‐exhibiting block in the copolymer consists of the zwitterionic poly(4‐((3‐methacrylamidopropyl)dimethylammonio)butane‐1‐sulfonate), abbreviated as PSBP. The LCST‐exhibiting block consists of the nonionic poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide), abbreviated as PNIPAM. The as‐prepared PSBP80‐b‐PNIPAM400 films feature a three‐layer structure, i.e., PNIPAM, mixed PNIPAM and PSBP, and PSBP. Both blocks have similar transition temperatures (TTs), namely around 32 °C for PNIPAM, and around 35 °C for PSBP, and with a two‐step heating protocol (20 °C to 40 °C and 40 °C to 80 °C), both TTs are passed. The response to such a thermal stimulus turns out to be complex. Besides a three‐step process (shrinkage, rearrangement, and reswelling), a continuous transfer of D2O from the PNIPAM to the PSBP block is observed. Due to the existence of both, LCST and UCST blocks in the PSBP80‐b‐PNIPAM400 film, the water transfer from the contracting PNIPAM, and mixed layers to the expanding PSBP layer occurs. Thus, the hydration kinetics and thermal response differ markedly from a thermoresponsive polymer film with a single LCST transition.
