Recent genomic study on Greenland halibut Reinhardtius hippoglossoides throughout the Northwest Atlantic revealed genetic differentiation between the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the remainder of the Northwest Atlantic. Knowledge of migration and thus connectivity among fish populations is key to understanding the stock dynamics of commercial species and establishing effective management strategies. In this study, we use otolith microchemistry to assess the population structure and define more clearly the potential connectivity of Greenland halibut among Saguenay Fjord, the Estuary, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence (EGSL) and outside this system. Otolith margins and cores were analyzed to determine the elemental fingerprints. The margin elemental fingerprints (Mg, Sr, and Ba) were used to infer spatial differentiation, and quadratic discriminant analysis resulted in an overall reclassification success of fish to their capture site of 59%. The core elemental fingerprints indicated three chemically distinct juvenile sources, suggesting high connectivity in the EGSL supporting the St. Lawrence Estuary as a main nursery. Our results also suggest that one of these three sources has a smaller contribution relative to the other sites. The case of the deepwater redfish (Sebastes mentella) in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (GSL) is a compelling example of drastic fluctuations in annual recruitment strength, characteristic of spasmodic stocks. After three decades of low abundance, the emergence of three consecutive strong year classes in 2011–2013 resulted in an unprecedented increase in biomass. In spasmodic stocks such as GSL redfish, strong year classes sustain both the biomass and catch for decades. Therefore, understanding the growth dynamics of these cohorts is essential. In the present study, we reconstructed the annual growth rates of redfish using otolith increment‐based annual chronology and investigated the drivers of growth variation in redfish strong year classes of the early 2010s and early 1980s. Stock biomass was identified as the main extrinsic driver of redfish growth, suggesting intense competition for food at high conspecific density. Warming of deep waters in the GSL, where adult redfish settle, positively correlated with individual growth. However, recent warming of the cold intermediate layer showed a negative correlation with redfish growth, likely related to the shrinking of the habitat this water mass provides for various redfish cold‐water prey rather than to a direct effect of temperature. Reconstruction of redfish annual growth trajectories from birth to capture emphasized the importance of carryover effects in the growth potential of strong year classes. This work provided an important first outlook of the factors driving growth variation in GSL redfish spasmodic stock and explored midterm consequences of density‐dependent pressures on biological parameters of the population. The linkage between growth rate and feeding success has been shown to strengthen the effects of early growth rate on later growth rate in the early life history of fish. However, the growth–feeding linkage largely remains to be tested at the individual level within the same populations/cohorts. We examined the growth–feeding linkage for multiple populations/cohorts in Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus larvae and Pacific round herring Etrumeus micropus larvae, through otolith microstructure analysis, based on samples collected from the commercial fishery for larval fish in the Kii Channel, Japan. The three growth–feeding mechanisms, which are based on the respective potential advantages of larger somatic size, higher growth rate, and earlier morphological development for achieving feeding success, were tested to understand how growth rate relates to feeding success. The "somatic size" mechanism was supported for all of six samples for anchovy larvae and three of four samples for round herring larvae. The "growth rate" mechanism was supported for two of six samples for anchovy larvae and three of four samples for round herring larvae. The "morphological development" mechanism was supported for three of four samples for anchovy larvae and all of three samples for round herring larvae. Overall, the present analysis supported the growth–feeding linkage but revealed the dynamics of the growth–feeding mechanisms. All the mechanisms were shown to operate at least for certain populations/cohorts, but none of them were universally effective over all populations/cohorts across the two species. In marine fishes of commercial interest, defining habitat use and migration strategies through ontogeny can help better understand the structure and dynamics of harvested populations and guide their management. The present study relied on otolith chemistry to identify three contingents within the Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) stock in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (GSL). We differentiated two chemical signatures from otolith edges, one for shallow (<100 m) and another one for deep (>100 m) waters. By identifying transitions between the deep and shallow habitats, we found that most halibut display migrations from the deep waters to shallow waters during the first 3 years of life. After reaching maturity, most halibut distributing in northern regions of the GSL became full-time residents in deep areas of the GSL. In contrast, halibut found in summer on the shallow plateau of the southern GSL displayed migrating behaviour between shallow (summer) and deep (winter) waters throughout their lives, either on an annual or irregular basis. Overall, our results demonstrate that otolith chemical signatures serve as natural markers of geographically distinct marine environments, facilitating the identification and reconstruction of environmental histories of long-lived marine fishes. Carbon dioxide rebreathing (CO2 rebreathing) significantly influences respiratory drive and the work of breathing during BiPAP ventilation. We analyzed CO2 movement during BiPAP ventilation to find a method of real time detection of CO2 rebreathing without the need of CO2 concentration measurement sampled from the circuit (method expensive and not routinely used). Observational study during routine care in 15 bed university hospital ICU. At 18 patients who required BiPAP ventilation, intubated or during noninvasive ventilation, during weaning period airflow, pressure and CO2 concentration signals were registered on both sides of venting port and 17 respiratory parameters were measured or calculated for each of 4747 respiratory cycles analyzed. Based on CO2 movement (expiration–inspiration sequences) 3 types of cycle were identified, type I and II do not induce rebreathing but type III does. To test differences between the 3 types ANOVA, t-tests, and canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) were used. Then a multilayer perceptron (MLP) network, a type of artificial neural network, using the above parameters (excluding CO2 concentration) was applied to automatically identify the three types of respiratory cycles. Of the 4747 respiratory cycles, 1849 were type I, 1545 type II, and 1353 type III. ANOVA and t-tests showed significant differences between the types of respiratory cycles. CDA confirmed a correct apportionment of 93.9% of the cycles; notably, of 97.9% of type III. MLP automatically classified the respiratory cycles into the three types with 98.8% accuracy. Three types of respiratory cycles could be distinguished based on CO2 movement during BiPAP ventilation. We present a synthesis of all sampling programs aimed at collection of ichthyoplankton conducted in coastal waters of eastern Newfoundland during the period 1982-2016, describing seasonal patterns in the succession of 22 taxa in terms of diversity, probability of occurrence, and overall abundance. Additionally, we assess whether changes in these patterns occurred prior to and after the collapse of major commercial fish stocks and accompanying shifts in ecosystem structure. Despite differences in relative species composition and community structure among bays, we identified clear and repeatable patterns in the seasonal cycle of species succession from Placentia Bay, on the south coast, to White Bay on the northeastern coast of the island. Some of the differences among bays reflected latitudinal patterns in the timing of the seasonal environmental cycle, with increasing delays toward northerly bays. Relatively few species generally dominated the larval fish community, although dominance varied seasonally, particularly once emergence of capelin commenced in July and August. Abundance of larval fish reflected the changes in abundance of adult stocks of commercial species, with strong declines in density following stock collapses, but larval decreases extended to non-commercial coastal taxa potentially removed as bycatch or through impacts of changes in ocean conditions that contributed to the decline of major ecosystem stocks (e.g., Atlantic cod, capelin, American plaice). Although differences in timing and extent of ichthyoplankton collections confounded our data, the general consistency of our observations with other sources of information (e.g., research vessel trawl surveys) highlights the value of such collections to monitoring of areas poorly represented by other types of surveys. Knowledge of changes in larval fish community structure in coastal areas can set a foundation to understand better the potential interaction between anthropogenic and climate impacts on the ecosystem state in coastal areas. Northern sand lance (Ammodytes dubius) are essential forage fish in most offshore, temperate-to-polar waters on the Northwest Atlantic shelf (NWA), but their population structure and genetic separation from the American sand lance (A. americanus) remain unresolved. We assembled a reference genome for A. dubius (first in the Ammodytidae) and then used low-coverage whole genome sequencing on 262 specimens collected across the species distribution (Mid-Atlantic Bight to Greenland) to quantify genetic differentiation between geographic regions based on single nucleotide polymorphisms. We found strong separation between A. dubius from locations north and south of the Scotian Shelf, largely due to massive genetic differentiation spanning most of chromosomes 21 and 24. Genetic distance increased with geographic distance in the smaller southern cluster but not in the larger northern cluster, where genetic homogeneity appeared across large geographic distances (>103 km). The two genetic clusters coincide with a clear break in winter sea surface temperature, suggesting that differential offspring survival, rather than limited transport, causes a break in realized connectivity. Nuclear and mitochondrial DNA both clearly delineated A. dubius from A. americanus , thereby confirming a species boundary through spatial niche partitioning into inshore (A. americanus) and offshore (A. dubius) sand lance species on the NWA. Johan Hjort's "critical period" hypothesis, which postulates that year‐class strength is determined in the short period following the onset of exogenous feeding, has rarely been supported by empirical data. Instead, the current understanding is that recruitment is determined by cumulative mortality throughout early life. Recent studies relied on the measure of growth autocorrelation derived from otolith daily increment widths to test the link between growth rate achieved during the post‐hatch period and during subsequent phases of the larval stage. Based on this approach, we revisit the role of larval growth in driving survival potential in three clupeoid species: Japanese sardine Sardinops melanostictus, Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus, and Pacific round herring Etrumeus micropus throughout the larval stage, using a combination of published datasets of otolith increment widths. Strong growth autocorrelation was detected for all three species throughout the larval stage, suggesting that initial growth determines to some extent growth rates achieved later in life. The extent of autocorrelation was reduced in sardine relative to anchovy and round herring at older ages. This interspecific difference could be attributed to differences in sensitivity to variability of environmental factors such as water temperature and food availability. The present findings suggest that the effect of early growth rate persists into later life stages for driving survival potential, which could reconcile the classic concept of "critical period" and the current "growth–survival" paradigm. Interactions between spatial dynamics and stock structure in marine fishes have largely focused on stocks in decline; stock structure is rarely re-visited for expanding species. Here, the spatial ecology of Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus L.), managed as four stocks in the Northwest Atlantic, is reviewed. Halibut collapsed under high exploitation in the mid-19th century, but the Canadian fisheries value has increased seven-fold since the early 2000s. Atlantic halibut's thermal habitat has increased due to warming, possibly contributing to its expansion. Genomic evidence differentiates two populations in the four management units, whereas there is non-genetic spatial structure within each of the stock boundaries. There are different core juvenile areas and a diversity of spawning migration patterns influenced by timing, fish size, maturity state, and distance between summer-feeding and over-wintering habitats. From tagging studies, multiple estimates of median distance at recapture (⁓3-90 km) are much less than the spatial domain of each stock. Growth rates are faster in the warmer south, as predicted by growing degree day. The current perspective of Atlantic halibut spatial structure is that there are two distinct populations, and within each, there are subpopulations composed of multiple migratory contingents. Microplastic contamination in the St. Lawrence River and Estuary (SLRE), Canada, poses potential risks to aquatic species. However, limited understanding of microplastic contamination in benthic fish, potentially more vulnerable than pelagic species, impedes effective risk assessment in this crucial ecosystem. This study addressed knowledge gaps by analyzing microplastics in the gastrointestinal tracts (GIT) and gills of Channel Catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) and Atlantic Tomcod (Microgadus tomcod) in the SLRE. Forty-two fish from ten stations were examined using KOH digestion, density separation, wet-peroxidation, and spectroscopy. Results indicated an average abundance of 3.0 ± 0.4 (mean ± SE) microplastic particles per individual fish. Most detected particles were small microplastics (<809 μm) and fibers, with blue and transparent colors. Major polymers identified included polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene. While catfish showed higher microplastic abundances per individual than tomcod, data based on GIT weight do not support microplastic biomagnification in this predator-prey relationship. Catfish from downstream of Québec City showed elevated levels of microplastics and more variations in their characteristics compared to average abundance found from a site located 50 km upstream. Urban activity may increase microplastic accumulation in downstream benthic fish and others. This highlights the need for further studies on the migratory capacities of fish species. Ecological risk assessment revealed medium to high-risks for the catfish stations close to the Québec City due to the prevalence of smaller microplastics <809 μm and highly toxic polymers (polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinylchloride, polyurethane, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene).
