The concept of sustainable migration has emerged recently after realizing the potential of migration in framing and altering the social, economic and environmental structures at destination, especially in the context of sustainable development goals (SDGs). An empirical investigation on the link between regional sustainability and sustainable migration is rare in literature, especially in the context of Pakistan’s urban areas. Present study aims at analysing the relationship between the two by geographic information system (GIS) spatially. This study shows that out of thirteen urban regions, hosting above-average migration along with positive in-migration growth, the migration towards nine regions is unsustainable. Two mega cities namely, Karachi and Lahore are included. This highlights the sustainable growth of regions, specifically and the nation generally. Therefore, in the national policy framework, migration policies should appear as an integral part.

To clarify the current situation, hotspots, and development trends, in the field of rice and climate change topic research, a massive literature dataset were analysed from the Web of Science database by bibliometric method. The research theme was chosen given the continuous increase of studies related to climatic changes and their consequences to rice. Based on the Web of Science core database, this study analyzed 3377 papers in the field of rice and climate change topic research from 1990 to 2021, which include 67 highly cited papers. Papers were mainly written in English (3,366, 99.674 %), from 12,655 authors, 3,259 organizations and 113 countries/territories, published in 761 journals and seven book series. The top five Journals are Science of the Total Environment (97, 2.872 %), Climatic Change (71, 2.102 %), Agricultural and Forest Meteorology (66, 1.954 %), Global Change Biology (65, 1.925 %) and Sustainability (64, 1.895 %), each published more than 64 papers. Top five countries and regions were Peoples R China, USA, India, Australia and Japan. Top five organizations of Chinese Acad Sci, Nanjing Agr Univ, Int Rice Res Inst (IRRI), Chinese Acad Agr Sci, and Univ Chinese Acad Sci were popular based on contribution of articles more than 116 papers each. Among the all authors, top five authors were Tao Fulu, Pan Genxing, Zhang Zhao, Hasegawa Toshihiro, Jagadish Krishna S.V., each published more than thirty papers. All keywords were separated seven clusters for different research topic. Visualizations offer exploratory information on the current state in a scientific field or discipline as well as indicate possible developments in the future. The results will help researchers clarify the current situation in rice and climate change adaptation science but also provide guidance for future research. This work is also useful for student identifying graduate schools and researchers selecting journals.

Geography of poverty (GOP) or poverty geography is a branch of human geography, which studies the geographical patterns, distribution characteristics, areal types and evolution mechanism of poverty and the relationship with geographical environment as well as antipoverty measures. Based on the systematical analysis on the significance of GOP research, this study firstly put forward the impoverished areal system (IAS), and then elaborated the main contents, research progresses and existing problems in GOP research, and finally proposed the possible key areas in the future. Results show that the IAS is an open system with structure and function and has its life-cycle law, which is composed of natural endowments, location conditions, human capital and geographical capital within a certain geographical area. The subsystem of human, land and industry is the core of the IAS. Poverty geography studies both regional (place) poverty and individual (people) poverty. Regional poverty is an external manifestation of the coupling maladjustment of human, land and industry elements in a particular area. There are 5W + H (What, Where, Why, When, Who and How) models in GOP research. Key areas of future GOP research include: 1) IAS's life cycle evolution law; 2) regional multidimensional poverty measurement; 3) geographical identification of poverty and its areal type; 4) dynamic simulation of impoverished and its mechanism; 5) poverty mapping; 6) antipoverty measure; and 7) poverty reduction effectiveness evaluation. Facing the UN's goal of eradicating poverty by 2030, poverty geography research in the new period should focus on the complexity, spatial heterogeneity and mechanism of poverty, and designs anti-poverty paths and models suitable for different countries. To adapt to the trend of globalization and informationization, poverty geographers should make use of modern technologies such as data platform, cloud computing, remote sensing and artificial intelligence to focus on the spatio-temporal pattern of poverty and its driving mechanism as well as antipoverty path, and to solve the global poverty problem and promote the internationalization, basification and engineering of geography.

Integrated urban–rural development is important in rural vitalisation. Most publications have focused on the structural system of urban agglomerations but ignored urban–rural systems at the county level. To fill this research gap, a three-level construction method using network analysis is proposed for investigating the structure of the interconnection of rural and urban systems at the county level. Hierarchical systems among towns, between towns and villages as well as among rural settlements are recognised by the interconnection strength measured by multiple methods. The development strategy of each town is decided using cross discrimination based on its nodality and network centrality. The hierarchy between towns and villages is characterised by interconnection analysis between towns and villages and one village would be designated as the hinterland of the destination town with the highest frequency of commuting behaviour. The hierarchy among rural settlements is characterised by their interdependence using gravity model and the central settlements are identified according to the forms of settlement clusters with their respective three spatial patterns (i.e., single-centre, dual-core and linear). The city- and sub-centres of Daye, economic hinterland of each town and central settlements were identified to provide guidelines for the development of rural planning and vitalisation. Our case study demonstrates the potential of the proposed analysis framework for the guidance of the urban-rural system construction. However, further investigation and alternative data sources are needed to fully reflect the interactive intensity between towns and rural settlements.

The contributions of tourism to the economic, social, and cultural development of rural areas have been attracting the attention of researchers since 2005. Nonetheless, the scopes and intellectual structures of those studies are uncertain. Therefore, this study presents the most influential research groups, journals, and the most effective inter-research associations in the field of rural tourism within the last 20 years, employing the bibliometric mapping method. To this end, Web of Science Core Collection database was used to retrieve relevant data for the period of 2000-2020. Also, the data are limited to the English language. Articles, books, book chapters, proceedings papers were included in the analysis. Analysis of co-citation was carried out using VOSviewer.The results of the Analysis of 864 documents indicate that rural tourism studies are categorized into 5 groups. Besides Tourism Management; Annals of Tourism Research and Journal of Sustainable Tourism are the most essential journals in the related field. Moreover, Richard Sharpley, Bernard Lane, Gunjan Saxena, and Collin Michael Hall are the most influential researchers in this field. The results of the study are crucial in that they reveal the line of progress and potential areas of improvement in this field to the researchers who are interested in rural tourism.

The promotion of new and competitive industries through cross-sectoral inter-organizational collaborations are tackled in many regions globally. This study explores the management of facilitating collaboration with consideration of the planned approach to change based on change management theory. The “initial conditions,” “field,” and “emerging interaction toward the collaborations” are clarified as key elements for management through intervention. It is considered how these interventions are implemented on these elements. A conceptual model for considering comprehensive management of the self-organization process toward collaboration is proposed. In the case study, experiences of the medical technology industry of three German states are examined. The activities of cluster organizations of these states, which provide services to facilitate cross-sectoral collaborations, are scrutinized. The results of the case study are comparatively analyzed, and the modified conceptual framework is depicted by reflecting the findings of the study. The implications are then discussed.

The Current Population Survey (CPS) has been the nation’s primary source of information about employment and unemployment for decades. The data are widely used by social scientists and policy makers to study labor force participation, poverty, and other high-priority topics. An underutilized feature of the CPS is its short-run panel component. This paper discusses the unique challenges encountered when linking basic monthly data as well as when linking the March basic monthly data to the Annual Social and Economic (ASEC) Supplement in the 1976–1988 period. We describe strategies to address linking obstacles and document linkage rates.

This article explores the socio-spatial interactions of a micro-community in a cluster-house concept apartment. The apartment has been designed for retreat and co-living by mehr als wohnen housing cooperative in Zurich, Switzerland. The methodology of investigation is a qualitative case study, through which housing narratives of three residents as representatives of this communal household are analyzed. In addition, on-site visits and observations, document analyses, and desktop studies are conducted. The originality of the research is in its approach of examining a micro-society through the residential community's authentic stories, which are in the context of normal times and the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings reveal that the social bonds of the studied cluster cohousing community are significantly maintained through the intermediate zones of the cluster-house arrangement. This socio-spatial interaction has activated the potentials of social innovation and housing resilience in an urban context. The research also highlights points of conflicts and insights for future cluster-concept apartment developments.

This article reviews Fuqing Zhang’s contributions to mesoscale atmospheric science from research to mentoring to academic service over his 20-year career. His fundamental scientific contributions are highlighted on predictability, data assimilation, and dynamics of high impact weather, especially gravity wave and tropical cyclones. His extremely generous efforts in efficiently transmitting to the community the new scientific knowledge and ideas, through mentoring, interacting, workshop organizing, and reviewing are summarized. Special appreciations were given to his tremendous contributions to the development of mesoscale meteorology in China and the education of Chinese graduate students and young scientists.

The environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) explains the dynamics associated with income and environmental quality. This study utilizes bibliometric analysis and data visualization techniques and empirically determines the tendencies and patterns in the EKC literature. Furthermore, the study explains intellectual structure, construct development, evolution, collaborations, and research clusters within the EKC research domain during the last two decades, from 2000 to 2020. The study empirically analyzes 2,218 articles and 55,051 references from 328 journals, 4,146 authors, 99 countries, and 50 subject categories. The study used co-citation analysis to examined the noticeable research articles, journals and authors’ contribution. Moreover, the co-occurrence analysis examined the prominent countries, institutions and keywords in the concerned literature. Most studies in EKC domain focus on developing regions facing the dual challenge of growth and environmental sustainability. The current initiative categorizes the EKC knowledge domain into major research areas with the help of different clusters namely causality analysis, non-renewable energy, energy consumption, the EKC, and industrial pollution. The study further discusses emerging trends that provide future research fronts and intellectual development within the EKC framework.

The fact that the transport costs directly affect the countries’ economies all around the world and that the transport costs increase depending on the energy resources steered the countries into developing combined transport strategies that will decrease the transport costs. In this study, an assessment is made for the selection of locations of the logistics centers which will contribute to decreasing the transport costs, develop logistics sector strategies in Turkey, and thereby enable to identify the strategies for the fastest, safest, and the most economic transport utilizing integration of modes of transport with each other. Nonetheless, an integrated logistics model which includes freight capacity and selection of the optimum location is proposed for the efficient and useful logistics center. In this logistics model, a freight model, which is a criterion for optimal location selection, has been obtained by using regression analysis. According to this freight model, freight carrying capacity is determined for each alternative region. Optimum location selection has been made utilizing AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process)-VIKOR (Vise Kriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje) method. We aim to contribute to the literature by making systematically estimating variable carrying capacities and by being decisive in the logistics center location selection. The proposed logistics model has been applied for a logistics center to be established, and effective and valid results have been obtained.

The determinants of travel demand, i.e., commute and non-commute trip generation, in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region are unknown, while the main factors behind travel generation in high-income countries have been studied since the 1990s. This paper aims at shedding light on these determinants and comparing them in Cairo, Istanbul, and Tehran as case-study cities. Three research questions were answered by this paper: (1) are there any significant differences between urban travel generation levels of the three cities? (2) which factors determine urban travel generation, including commute trips and non-work activities in the large agglomerations of the MENA region? and (3) how similar or different are these determinants in the three mentioned cities? The analysis was based on a mobility survey undertaken in 2017 in 18 neighborhoods of the three cities. The data resulted from 8284 face-to-face interviews (Cairo: 2786, Istanbul: 2781, Tehran: 2717). Weighted Least Squares models showed that 19 and 18 variables related to individual and household status, socioeconomics, attitudes, the built environment, and accessibility define commute and non-commute trip generation, respectively. The results of Analysis of Variance indicate that these determinants are almost similar in a holistic view, but there are some relative differences between them in the three cities. This study addresses the contextual differences between the determinants in the MENA region and high-income countries and concludes that travel demand is context sensitive. The findings specially show how street network configuration and neighborhood-level facilities can be a tool for urban planners to control mobility demand. Highly connected street networks with adequate neighborhood amenities are associated with the frequency of commute and non-commute trips in the case cities, thus planners and decisionmakers in the MENA region are encouraged to use land use and street connectivity to gain control on trip generation for attaining a more sustainable travel modal share.

This study empirically measures Beijing's international air connectivity through descriptive statistics and various connectivity indexes. In particular, we comprehensively benchmark Beijing's international air connectivity with other major international exchange centers and gateway airports around the world. It is found that, although Beijing has direct flights to a comparable number of foreign destinations, the city still significantly lags behind other major counterparts in international air connectivity. This is due to Beijing's inferior connection quality in terms of flight frequency, number of seats, flying distance, and its poor international transfer capability. Moreover, a gravity-type model is applied to investigate the determinants of Beijing's route-level direct flight traffic. An index of potential market size is calculated for a sample including candidate overseas airports without direct flights with Beijing. It is found that Beijing has already opened direct flights to most of the candidate airports that have high market potentials. The air transport market potentials to major B&R (Belt-and-Road) cities are very low. However, given China's growing trade and economic ties with the B&R countries, Beijing could consider more favorable policies in support of direct flight operations to B&R countries. It is more important for Beijing to upgrade air connectivity quality by liberalizing restrictions on flight frequency and airfare. The newly opened Beijing Daxing Airport adds valuable capacity for Beijing to better explore international connectivity. Although COVID-19 pandemic forces Beijing to shut down international flight operations until now, the city needs to formulate clearer long-term strategies to improve international its air connectivity.

Spatial development of Ukraine today is characterized by the presence of serious problems and negative trends, including inequalities of socio-economic development of some regions and settlements, inconsistency of social, economic, urban and environmental aspects of their development.State and local governments solve these problems by developing and implementing spatial development strategies. However, very few of such strategies met the real challenges and needs of local communities, were implemented or integrated.Recent research and publications analysis. Such Ukrainian scientists as O. Ghazaryan, A. Galchynsky, V. Geets, Z. Gerasymchuk, B. Danylyshyn, M. Dolishniy, T. Zayats, O. Kavtysh, I. Katsai, G. Litosh, O. Medvedeva, V. Molokanova, O. Novikova, O. Pidkuyko, S. Pisarenko, V. Chernov and some others.A number of methodological documents for spatial development planning have also been developed as part of EuropeAid technical assistance programs and projects.Highlighting previously unsettled parts of the general problem. Previous research has paid almost no attention to the identification of specific entities that are currently involved in the spatial development of Ukraine. The lack of clearly defined development “recipients” deprives the developed strategic documents of any specific vector of their implementation. This greatly complicates the functioning of the spatial development system in our country and reduces its efficiency. Therefore, the aim of the study is to propose a method of spatial development entities analysis in order to identify the actors who now provide implementation of measures in the field of spatial development in Ukraine.Paper main body. According to the proposed method, the first stage of the spatial development entities analysis is the establishment of landowners as potential assets users for the implementation of development measures. The next analyzed group of participants includes the subjects of urban planning, namely – customers of buildings construction and reconstruction, which are contained in the Unified Register of documents certifying the commissioning of completed facilities. The third group of spatial development entities studied includes investors who provide financing for spatial development activities. Statistical data on capital investments by sources of financing were obtained from the State Statistics Service of Ukraine.Certain spatial development entities are clearly divided into the public or private sphere, as project management approaches and methods in these areas have traditionally differed significantly. According to the developed method, the analysis of current entities in Ukrainian spatial development was carried out.Conclusions of the research and prospects for further studies. Obtained results of the analysis allow us to establish the representatives of the private sector as the main players in the spatial development in Ukraine. They own almost three quarters of Ukraine’s land. They are the most active participants in urban development, and they are the ones who provide more than 87% of capital investments with their own funds. That is, spatial development must be strategically attractive primarily for the private sector. Therefore, a topical area for further research may be the search of mechanisms for reconciling the strategic priorities established by the authorities in spatial development strategies with the strategic priorities of private structures as the main actors in spatial development.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a deep impact on the way we perceive our world. This study explores its effect on Urban Green Space (UGS) perception in Buenos Aires City (CABA), Argentina. We provide a detailed overview of the distribution of UGS in CABA, along with socio-economic analysis and visitors' profile and perception before and during the restrictive measures adopted by the national authorities to contain the COVID-19 outbreak (July to December of 2020). We conducted a series of surveys based on open and closed questions. Before the pandemic, surveys were carried out in situ in eight parks of six districts, randomly chosen. During the confinement, online surveys were conducted. According to our results, the mean UGS density in CABA is 6.09 m2 /person, but marked differences between districts exist, ranging from 0.02 m2 /person to 17.68 m2 /person. This uneven distribution causes differences in the quality of life of CABA inhabitants, perhaps more pronounced during reduced-mobility situations like COVID-19 confinement. Socio economic analysis were done linking multidimensional poverty, COVID-19 positive cases and urban mobility in CABA. Regarding UGS visitors, before the confinement, the majority of respondents were employees or students; during the confinement, employees and retirees predominated. When asked to choose important attributes to describe their perception about the UGS from a given list, respondents selected “calm,” “green,” and “sounds of nature,” without differences before and during the confinement. However, when asked about the UGS role, the main answer was “a place to be with nature” before the confinement and “an important place in the city” during it. Understanding how society perceives the UGS, especially during crises, is essential to rethink the urban landscape and prepare our cities, towards biophilic cities and for a more sustainable future.

The paper proposes a new approach towards the Soviet specific knowledge production system – krayevedeniye – as a fluid field of various concepts and intellectual practices from the perspective of the history of spatial sciences. It shows the connection of krayevedeniye with Soviet science, introduces the people involved in krayevedeniye, reveals their contribution to the Soviet planned economy, and aims to embed ‘kray’ as a separate spatial concept. Moreover, it discusses whether krayevedeniye might be seen as a separate spatial science, rather than in the tradition of regional/local history research. By addressing these topics, I hope to contribute to a better understanding of Soviet spatial sciences, Soviet regionalism, centre-periphery relationships, and Soviet spatial history.

Strategies applied by urban policy makers in order to achieve sustainable city development may be in conflict with each other because it crosses many disciplines and policy areas. This research focusses on the dilemma between compact city and urban greenspace policies and their influence on actual land-use change in Amsterdam and Brussels. These cases are selected because of their similar urban growth yet diverse policy and governance contexts. We contend that comparing how urban policies try to address this dilemma can provide a deeper understanding of how policy strategies affect land-use change. The results show that densification indeed decreases the quantity (Amsterdam: −4.7% Brussels: −11.9%), average size (A: −3.1% B: −25.6%) and connectivity of urban greenspaces. Observed land-use changes seem disconnected from purported urban greenspace policies, whereas urban development plans seem to dominate changes in greenspace quantity and form.

Developing knowledge-based and usable climate change policies requires establishing science-policy interfaces through which knowledge producers and policymakers cooperate. Current research reveals that co-production-based interfaces dominated neither by knowledge producers nor policymakers succeed in facilitating the transformation of knowledge into politics. From this point of view, this paper explores how Izmir Development Agency (IZKA), a regional development agency in Turkey, utilizes scientific knowledge and science-policy interfaces in its activities on climate change. Based on the analysis of agency documents and semi-structured interviews with experts from and outside IZKA, the findings indicate that IZKA thrives in integrating scientific knowledge on climate change in its activities drawing from multi-stakeholder and multi-level science-policy interfaces that have significant similarities with the co-production model. In these interfaces, international, national, regional, and local stakeholders share their resources, knowledge, and experience on climate change. Although legal, geographical, and demographic conditions also have an impact, the main reason behind IZKA’s success is the agency’s climate-focused vision that shapes decisions, strategies, organizational structure, and activities. In parallel to the indicated finding, this paper also discloses that the perspective of not prioritizing climate change and considering the potential benefits as only “co-benefit” does not yield results with the desired efficiency. Another finding is that even though the national government is the main actor on climate in Turkey, development agencies are capable of carrying out transformative activities in their regions, albeit limited.

Market definition is a core concept of competition law around the globe, including in the European Union, the United States, and Brazil. In all three jurisdictions, antitrust authorities are grappling with the challenges of digital markets, often dealing with the very same digital players. The provision of zero-price services, the multisided nature of many digital platforms, and the implementation of entire digital ecosystems all challenge traditional approaches to market definition. But where there are common problems, there is a potential for common solutions. Through a comparative analysis of decisional practice relating to these past, present, and future challenges of digital market definition, this contribution maps the common ground already achieved while highlighting remaining gaps and possible solutions: for zero-price services—the past—it shows how a consensus has emerged on the theory and possible tools to define markets for ‘free’ services. On multisided platforms—the present—it finds that no such consensus has been reached yet, but strides are currently being made in developing an overall framework. And on digital ecosystems, it analyses how this challenge of the future requires the development of a coherent approach that can be based on cross-jurisdictional insights from the past and present.

Financial innovation is the widely accepted process across the globe. ‘What forces drive the financial innovation?’ is the research question since long. Many studies were conducted in the past to answer and each study identified some or other factors that prominently driving financial innovation landscape in their respective economy. The present study critically review existing Literatures to suggest a comprehensive list of determinants. The study uses descriptive research design. A sample of 54 literatures focusing on financial innovation and it’s determinants during the time period 1983 to 2018 is included in the study. Further, content analysis and descriptive statistics are used to explore the determinants. The study identified 23 different determinants of financial innovation and classify those under two bases. First, on the basis of influencing power and second on the basis of nature of the determinant. The study found that technological development, competition, firm size and regulations are the major sources of financial innovation from different categories. The study also raised the research agenda to study determinants of financial innovation in Asian context, as there are scanty literature covering Asian economies.
