This research investigated the predictors of satisfaction for parents of pediatric patients after a clinical consultation. Specifically, we assessed whether perceptions of their provider's communication quality influenced the degree to which their (dis)satisfaction with consultation length associated with their provider rating and intent to recommend the provider's office. Using patient satisfaction survey data collected after initial clinical visits to a pediatric hospital (N = 12,004), we found that communication quality was a stronger predictor for those who were dissatisfied with their consultation length, whereas communication quality made a relatively smaller difference for those who were satisfied with their consultation length. Put another way, parents' dissatisfaction with their child's consultation length mattered little when they perceived their provider to be high in communication quality, but it reduced their ratings and intentions to recommend when they perceived their provider to be low in communication quality. These results suggest that providers' communication behaviors have the capacity to buffer patients' negative evaluations otherwise incurred from shorter than desired consultations. Background: Depression is common in patients with cancer and is associated with lower treatment adherence and reduced quality of life. Antidepressants and psychotherapy have limited success in improving depression among patients with cancer. This study explored the safety, feasibility, and efficacy of psilocybin‐assisted therapy in patients with cancer and major depressive disorder. Methods: This phase 2, open‐label trial enrolled patients with curable and noncurable cancer and major depressive disorder at a single community oncology practice site. A single 25‐mg dose of psilocybin was administered simultaneously to cohorts of three to four participants with individual (4.25 hours in 1:1 therapist‐to‐patient ratio) and group therapeutic support (3.75 hours) before, during, and after psilocybin administration. Outcomes included depression severity, anxiety, pain, demoralization, and disability. Results: Thirty participants completed the study. No psilocybin‐related serious adverse events occurred; treatment‐related adverse events (e.g., nausea, headache) were generally mild and expected. There were no laboratory or electrocardiogram abnormalities. No suicidality was reported. Efficacy was suggested with a robust reduction in depression severity scores from baseline to posttreatment of 19.1 points (95% CI, 22.3 to –16.0; p <.0001) by week 8. Eighty percent of participants demonstrated a sustained response to psilocybin treatment; 50% showed full remission of depressive symptoms at week 1, which was sustained for 8 weeks. Conclusions: Psilocybin‐assisted therapy in group cohort administration was safe and feasible in patients with cancer and depression. Efficacy was suggested based on clinically meaningful reductions in depressive symptoms. The novel, group‐oriented format, compact delivery time, community cancer center setting, and one‐to‐one therapist‐to‐patient ratio could also add to therapeutic gains and efficiency of administration. Humanitarian practitioners, specifically emergency aid and relief workers, disaster responders, social workers, and crisis clinicians, are at elevated risk of experiencing trauma as a result of their professions. Approaches for responding to the silent pandemic of reactive traumatic stress, including secondary traumatic stress and vicarious traumatization among humanitarian practitioners continue to be inadequate. The current model of self‐care, emphasizing internal regulation and processes to promote positive health, wellbeing, and the ability to continue to support others, is insufficient to best equip humanitarian practitioners with protective factors to stave off reactive traumatic responses to their work. Histones organize DNA within cellular nuclei, but they can be released from damaged cells. In peripheral tissues extracellular histones act as damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) inducing pro-inflammatory activation of immune cells. Limited studies have considered DAMP-like activity of histones in the central nervous system (CNS); therefore, we studied the effects of extracellular histones on microglia, the CNS immunocytes, and on neuronal cells. Both the linker histone H1 and the core histone H3 induced pro-inflammatory activation of microglia-like cells by upregulating their secretion of NO and cytokines, including interferon-γ-inducible protein 10 (IP-10) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF). The selective inhibitors MMG-11 and TAK-242 were used to demonstrate involvement of toll-like receptors (TLR) 2 and 4, respectively, in H1-induced NO secretion by BV-2 microglia. H1, but not H3, downregulated the phagocytic activity of BV-2 microglia. H1 was also directly toxic to all neuronal cell types studied. We conclude that H1, and to a lesser extent H3, when released extracellularly, have the potential to act as a CNS DAMPs. Sexual misconduct incidents reported to Title IX coordinators and stability in incident characteristics within institutions of higher education (IHEs) over time were examined. Data included two waves of reported incidents in 2016–2018 (n = 2,598) and 2018–2020 (n = 2,778) across Maryland IHEs (N = 40). Findings showed most reported incidents were for Other Sexual Misconduct (e.g., sexual harassment) versus Sexual Assault I (i.e., rape) or Sexual Assault II (e.g., unwanted sexual touching). Types of sexual misconduct differed regarding reporting by responsible employees, nonstudent perpetrators, and the range of accommodations accessed; institutional-level profiles of sexual misconduct were stable across waves. Objective Data Sources Study Design Data Extraction Principal Findings Conclusions This study aims to examine how variation in physicians' treatment decisions for newborn deliveries responds to changes in the hospital‐level norms for obstetric clinical decision‐making.All hospital‐based births in Florida from 2003 through 2017.Difference‐in‐differences approach is adopted that leverages obstetric unit closures as the source of identifying variation to exogenously shift obstetricians to a new, nearby hospital with different propensities to approach newborn deliveries less intensively.Births attributed to physicians continuously observed 2 years before the closure event and 2 years after the closure event (treatment group physicians) or for identical time periods around a randomly assigned placebo closure date (control group physicians).All of the physicians meeting our inclusion criteria shifted their births to a new hospital less than 20 miles from the hospital shuttering its obstetric unit. The new hospitals approached newborn births more conservatively, and treatment group physicians sharply became less aggressive in their newborn birth clinical management (e.g., use of C‐section). The immediate 11‐percentage point (33%) increase in delivering newborns without any procedure behavior change is statistically significant (p value <0.01) and persistent after the closure event; however, the physicians' payer and patient mix are unchanged.Obstetric physician behavior change appears highly malleable and sensitive to the practice patterns of other physicians delivering newborns at the same hospital. Incentives and policies that encourage more appropriate clinical care norms hospital‐wide could sharply improve physician treatment decisions, with benefits for maternal and infant outcomes. Mediterranean red coral has long been believed to be imbued with sacred, spiritual and healing power and was given to children across Europe in the form of an amulet, teether or medicine. In early modern England, portraits of children from affluent families and medical receipts provide snapshots of coral usage, a moment in time, which do not adequately reveal the spiritual, therapeutic and affective significance of this material within the context of unique family circumstances and a multitude of perceived threats to children’s health. Focusing on five case studies, this article delves into the lived experience of families who deemed coral objects an essential childhood accessory in the period from 1590 to 1775. Julian Herrick, a goldsmith’s widow, Sir John Oglander, a knight caught up in the civil war, Dr Garencières, a doctor confronting dangerous infection, Lady Blackett, a devoted grandmama, and Ann Lord, a woman facing destitution, all placed value on coral for their young children. This study draws on a diverse range of material and documentary evidence from the seventeenth and eighteenth century to unpack the significance of red coral for parents within a changing religious, political and medical landscape. Building on scholarship within material culture studies and the history of emotions, this study also situates children’s coral objects within emotional relationships and seeks to uncover the implicit meanings such objects held which could not be written or articulated due to illiteracy, controversy or persecution. By combining a micro-historical approach with a broader thematic analysis, the case studies presented indicate that coral occupies an important place in the history of the early modern family as the embodiment of the anxieties of parents and grandparents, a means to soothe and protect young children and a material expression of hope, love and faith, particularly during periods of crisis and separation. In internal fertilisers, the precise timing of ovulation with the arrival of sperm at the site of fertilisation is essential for fertilisation success. In birds, mating is often not synchronised with ovulation, but instead females utilise specialised sperm storage tubules (SSTs) in the reproductive tract, which can ensure sperm are always available for fertilisation at the time of ovulation, whilst simultaneously providing a mechanism of post‐copulatory sexual selection. Despite the clear importance of SSTs for fertilisation success, we know little about the mechanisms involved in sperm acceptance, storage, and release. Furthermore, most research has been conducted on only a small number of species, based on which SSTs are usually assumed to look and function in the same way across all species. Here, we conduct a comparative exploration of SST morphology across 26 species of Galliformes. We show that SSTs, and the surrounding tissue, can vary significantly in morphology across species. We provide observational evidence that Galliformes exhibit at least 5 distinct categories of tubule types, including distinctive coiled and multi‐branched tubules, and describe 2 additional features of the surrounding tissue. We suggest functional explanations for variation in tubule morphology and propose next steps for future research. Our findings indicate that SSTs are likely to be far more variable than has previously been assumed, with potentially important consequences for our understanding of sperm storage in birds and post‐copulatory sexual selection in general. Commensurate measures of alcohol-related consequences across countries and cultures are critical for addressing the global burden of hazardous alcohol use. The Rutgers Alcohol Problem Index (RAPI), developed and validated in the United States, is a popular measure of alcohol problems. This study examined measurement invariance of the RAPI across samples of U.S. and Swedish high school seniors. Latent mean differences in alcohol problems across countries and differences in associations between alcohol problems with alcohol use and protective behavioral strategies (PBS) were also examined. The RAPI was scalar invariant. Swedish students reported fewer problems than U.S. students (latent mean difference = −0.19, p =.047). In both samples, the RAPI was positively correlated with alcohol use frequency and quantity (ps <.001), and negatively correlated with PBS use (p s <.05). Overall, the RAPI demonstrated measurement invariance, and we found evidence for its validity across samples of U.S. and Swedish high school seniors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Previous literature has indicated an association between participant‐reported perceptions (e.g., ratings) of comfort, dryness and vision quality during soft contact lens wear. However, these reports do not account for participant‐ and lens‐specific factors which may impact the interpretation of these results. The purpose of this project was to quantify the association between these participant‐reported ratings while accounting for both participant‐ and lens‐specific factors. Methods: Participant‐reported ratings (scale 0–100) of comfort, dryness and quality of vision for 675 soft contact lens wearers (1207 eyes) were aggregated across 31 studies completed at Indiana University. Linear mixed‐effects regression modelling was performed on each outcome rating individually. Covariate‐adjusted models incorporated both participant‐ (e.g., age, sex) and lens‐related (e.g., lens material, edge and optics) factors. The models were statistically adjusted for the duration of lens wear in hours and cumulative days of exposure. Results: Consistent with estimates from covariate‐adjusted regression models, pairwise Spearman correlations [95% CI] between dryness and comfort (rs = 0.71, [0.69, 0.74]), vision quality and comfort (rs = 0.53, [0.49, 0.57]) and vision quality and dryness (rs = 0.49, [0.42, 0.54]) were all positive and had p < 0.001. Average participant‐reported ratings of comfort, dryness and vision quality decreased by (bs [95% CI]) = −0.81 [−1.15, −0.46] −0.34 [−0.67, 0.0005] and −0.90 [−1.19, −0.60] rating units, respectively, for each hour of lens wear. Conclusions: Significant positive associations were found between participant‐reported measures of comfort, dryness and vision quality during soft contact lens wear. The associations between these ratings and the participant‐ and lens‐related factors that drive them should be considered by clinicians and manufacturers when fitting and designing soft contact lenses. Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, predominantly of the motor system. Although some genetic components and cellular mechanisms of Parkinson's have been identified, much is still unknown. In recent years, emerging evidence has indicated that non-DNA-sequence variation (in particular epigenetic mechanisms) is likely to play a crucial role in the development and progression of the disease. Here, we present an up-to-date overview of epigenetic processes including DNA methylation, DNA hydroxymethylation, histone modifications and non-coding RNAs implicated in the brain of those with Parkinson's disease. We will also discuss the limitations of current epigenetic research in Parkinson's disease, the advantages of simultaneously studying genetics and epigenetics, and putative novel epigenetic therapies. Aim: Species responses to global warming will depend on intraspecific diversity, yet studies of factors governing biogeographic patterns of variability are scarce. Here, we investigate the evolutionary processes underlying genetic and phenotypic diversity in the flightless and cold‐adapted grasshopper Sigaus piliferus, and project its suitable space in time. Location: Te Ika‐a‐Māui Aotearoa—North Island of New Zealand. Methods: We used mitochondrial sequences to investigate population connectivity and demographic trends using phylogeographic tools and neutrality statistics. Metric data were used to document phenotypic variation using naïve clustering. We used niche metrics to assess intraspecific niche variation, and niche modelling to investigate suitability under past and future scenarios. Multiple matrix regressions with randomization explored the processes contributing to phenotypic differentiation among grasshopper populations. Results: Niche models and demographic analyses suggest suitable space for this grasshopper was more restricted during glacial than interglacial stages. Genealogical relationships among ND2 haplotypes revealed a deep north–south split partly concordant with phenotypic and niche variation, suggesting two ecotypes that have mixed during recolonisation of the central volcanic region. Multiple matrix regressions with randomization indicate a link between climate and phenotypic differentiation inferred from leg and pronotum dimensions but not pronotum shape. Niche projections predict severe habitat reduction due to climate warming. Main conclusions: The current distribution and intraspecific diversity of S. piliferus reflect complex biogeographical scenarios consistent with Quaternary climates and volcanism. Phenotypic divergence appears adaptive. Current levels of genetic and phenotypic variation suggest adaptive potential, yet the pace of anthropogenic warming over the next 50 years could result in small populations that may collapse before adapting. Differences in niche features between diverging intraspecific lineages suggest distinct responses to climate change, and this has implications for prioritising conservation actions and management strategies. In the United States, truck rates for perishable food, the per‐mile rate charged for trucking services to move perishable food from farms to stores, rose substantially in the post‐COVID‐19 pandemic era. We argue that rising truck rates is a signal of a broader shortage of truckers, but the connection between labor shortages, rising truck rates, and a lack of trucking services has yet to be established empirically. In this paper, we develop an empirical examination based on an equilibrium job search, matching, and bargaining framework in which we estimate the role of labor shortages in accelerating driver‐wage growth, and truck rates for agricultural products. We estimate the model by combining US Bureau of Census Current Population Survey data on truck driver wages with USDA‐Agricultural Marketing Service Service data on truck rates to establish the linkage between trucker supply and the demand for trucking services. We find that the COVID‐19 pandemic was responsible for a rise in for‐hire trucker wages of some 38%$38\%$, a rise in average truck rates of nearly 50%$50\%$ and that the gap between trucker‐job openings and successful matches explains a significant, but small, rise in truck rates. To perform a single unit review of surgical approaches to the pineal region, looking to ascertain if trends were identifiable regarding the extent of resection and the rate of post-operative complications between approaches. We hypothesised that each approach would offer different exposure of the pineal region which may result in poor access to certain areas of the tumour. This may lead to residual tumour in reliable and predictable locations, and an awareness of these regions could help with pre-operative planning and lead to higher levels of suspicion when inspecting these regions intraoperatively. We performed a single centre, retrospective review of all adult and paediatric patients who underwent surgical debulking of pineal region tumours between 2008 and 2019. Patient demographics, pre- and post- operative radiological tumour volume data, histology and complication rates were compared between the two groups. The occipital transtentorial approach resulted in a significantly lower extent of resection when compared to the supracerebellar infratentorial approach (p = 0.04), even after multivariate analysis (p = 0.006). There was no significant difference between the location of residual tumour relative to the superior colliculi between the two approaches (p = 1.00). There was a significant incidence of radiological occipital lobe ischaemia from the occipital transtentorial approach (p = 0.04). Within our series, we did not demonstrate a consistent location of residual tumour relative to the surgical approach chosen. Whilst there was a significant difference with regards to the extent of resection between approaches, in the context of small comparative groups this is difficult to draw far-reaching conclusions from. In the face of rising population, erratic climate, resource depletion, and increased exposure to natural hazards, environmental monitoring is increasingly important. Satellite data form most of our observations of Earth. On-the-ground observations based on in situ sensor systems are crucial for these remote measurements to be dependable. Providing open-source options to rapidly prototype environmental datalogging systems allows quick advancement of research and monitoring programs. This paper introduces Loom, a development environment for low-power Arduino-programmable microcontrollers. Loom accommodates a range of integrated components including sensors, various datalogging formats, internet connectivity (including Wi-Fi and 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE)), radio telemetry, timing mechanisms, debugging information, and power conservation functions. Additionally, Loom includes unique applications for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. By establishing modular, reconfigurable, and extensible functionality across components, Loom reduces development time for prototyping new systems. Bug fixes and optimizations achieved in one project benefit all projects that use Loom, enhancing efficiency. Although not a one-size-fits-all solution, this approach has empowered a small group of developers to support larger multidisciplinary teams designing diverse environmental sensing applications for water, soil, atmosphere, agriculture, environmental hazards, scientific monitoring, and education. Objective Methods Results Conclusion The impact of a transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block in patients undergoing cesarean section requires further evaluation. The aim of this study was to compare postoperative pain scores and opioid use in cesarean surgery patients undergoing either a TAP block and scheduled multimodal pain management (SMPM) or SMPM alone.In this retrospective, dual cohort study, cesarean surgery patients underwent neuraxial anesthesia and a TAP block (SMPM/TAP) or SMPM; the TAP block incorporated ropivacaine (20–30 mL) administered bilaterally. The group analyses involved a comparison of postoperative pain scores using the visual analog scale and opioid consumption at 24 and 24–48 h.There were 94 (52.8%) patients in the SMPM/TAP group and 84 (47.2%) subjects in the SMPM alone group. At 24 h postoperatively, the SMPM/TAP group exhibited significantly lower pain scores (4.07 vs 4.54) than the SMPM group (P < 0.001) and reduced opioid consumption (2.29 vs 3.28 mg; P < 0.001). However, at 24–48 h, the SMPM group demonstrated lower pain scores (5.46 vs 5.98) compared to the SMPM/TAP group (P < 0.001) and reduced opioid consumption (8.75 vs 10.21 mg; P < 0.001); overall opioid consumption was higher (12.50 vs 12.02 mg) in the SMPM/TAP group (P < 0.001).The TAP block improved cesarean surgery patients' pain scores and reduced opioid consumption at 24 h postoperatively but the effect of the TAP block was ephemeral as the SMPM/TAP group exhibited inferior pain scores and greater opioid consumption compared to the SMPM group at 24–48 h postoperatively. This exploratory study explores the role of religious and spiritual (R/S) activity in cognitive impairment. We used data from respondents with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) from the Health and Retirement Study and Aging, Demographics, and Memory sub-study to investigate associations between religious service attendance and behavioral expressions, cognition, and sleep disturbances independently at two different time points using Spearman’s Rho partial correlation. Religious service attendance was significantly associated with behavioral expressions, cognition, and sleep disturbances. Older adults with MCI who exhibited heightened levels of R/S activity engagement reported decreased behavioral expressions and better cognition at both time points. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction Methods Results Conclusions The suicide crisis syndrome (SCS) has demonstrated efficacy in predicting suicide attempts, showing potential utility in detecting at‐risk individuals who may not be willing to disclose suicidal ideation (SI). The present international study examined differences in intentions to utilize mental health and suicide prevention resources among community‐based adults with varying suicide risk (i.e., presence/absence of SCS and/or SI).A sample of 16,934 community‐based adults from 13 countries completed measures about the SCS and SI. Mental health and suicide prevention resources were provided to all participants, who indicated their intentions to use these resources.Individuals with SCS (55.7%) were just as likely as those with SI alone (54.0%), and more likely than those with no suicide‐related symptoms (45.7%), to report willingness to utilize mental health resources. Those with SI (both with and without SCS) were more likely to seek suicide prevention resources (52.6% and 50.5%, respectively) than those without SI (41.7% and 41.8%); however, when examining endorsements for personal use, those with SCS (21.6%) were more likely to use resources than individuals not at risk (15.1%).These findings provide insight into individuals' willingness to use resources across configurations of explicitly disclosed (SI) and indirect (SCS) suicide risk. In galaxy cluster collisions, the gas can be separated from dark matter haloes. Abell 56 displays signatures of a dissociative bullet-like merger with a possible high-inclination angle between the plane of orbit and the sky. Our objective is to provide a comprehensive description of the features observed in the collision scenario of Abell 56. Additionally, we aim to apply a potential weak lensing mass bias correction attributed to the merger to evaluate its impact on our findings. To investigate this, we perform tailored hydrodynamical N -body simulations, varying the impact parameter. We initially identified an early scenario at 0.12 Gyr after the central passage that reproduces some observational features. However, the mean temperature of 9.7 keV exceeded the observed value. Our best model corresponds to the late scenario at 0.52 Gyr after the pericentre, reproducing observed features of Abell 56, with an inclination of 58°. These features include the offset of 103 kpc between the main gas density peak and the south dark matter density peak, gas morphology, a line-of-sight relative velocity of 184 km s−1, and a mean temperature of 6.7 keV. This late model provides a plausible scenario to describe the dynamics of Abell 56. The weak lensing mass bias did not significantly impact the overall dynamics of this cluster merger. Background: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) face significant barriers to screening, testing, and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Expedited partner therapy (EPT) streamlines partner treatment of STIs, but use among adolescents is low. We aimed to increase EPT offering and provision at 2 adolescent medicine clinics (AMCs) and the emergency department (ED) in an urban children's hospital. We addressed barriers at provider, pharmacy, and patient levels. We compared EPToffering and provision for chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis [CT]) and trichomonas (Trichomonas vaginalis [TV]) infection at baseline and across 2 intervention cycles. Methods: Baseline datawere collected fromJuly 2019 toMarch 2020 and our intervention time frame spanned from April 2020 to October 2021. Laboratory codes identified patients with CTor TVinfections. Cycle 1 allowed providers to order EPTwithin a patient's chart. The second cycle targeted education and standardization for STI/EPT notification and counseling. During this cycle, notification of ED patients was centralized to the AMC nurses. Results: A total of 747 CT and TV cases were identified. In the AMC, EPToffering increased from 77.3%to 87.7%(P = 0.01). Expedited partner therapy provision increased from 32.3% to 69.9% (P < 0.001). Expedited partner therapy offering for EDpatients increased by 82.3%.Retesting rates remained consistent, with a significant drop in reinfection rates (P = 0.003) within patients seen in the AMC. Purpose: The rising volume of open government data (OGD) contrasts with the limited acceptance and utilization of OGD among citizens. This study investigates the reasons for citizens' not using available OGD by comparing citizens' attitudes towards OGD with the development of OGD portals. The comparison includes four OGD utilization processes derived from the literature, namely OGD awareness, needs, access and consumption. Design/methodology/approach: A case study in China has been carried out. A sociological questionnaire was designed to collect data from Chinese citizens (demand), and personal visits were carried out to collect data from OGD portals (supply). Findings: Results show that Chinese citizens have low awareness of OGD and OGD portals. Significant differences were recognized between citizens' expectations and OGD portals development in OGD categories and features, data access services and support functions. Correlations were found between citizens' OGD awareness, needs, access and consumption. Originality/value: By linking the supply of OGD from the governments with each process of citizens' OGD utilization, this paper proposes a framework for citizens' OGD utilization lifecycle and provides a new tool to investigate reasons for citizens' not making use of OGD. Introduction: Habitual viewing behaviour is widely believed to be an important contributing factor to the onset and progression of myopia and may be task dependent. The purpose of this study was to quantify the habitual viewing distance of children performing five different tasks on a smartphone digital device. Methods: The real‐time viewing distance in 38 children with their habitual correction was measured using software (MyopiaApp) on a handheld (Google Pixel 3) device. Five tasks were performed in a randomised sequence: playing a game, watching video in a light (680 lux) and dark (5.5 lux) environment and reading small (8 pt) and large (16 pt) text. ANCOVA statistical analysis was used to evaluate the effect of task, group (myope vs. non‐myope) and arm length on the median relative viewing distance. Results: Arm length was not correlated with viewing distance in any of the tasks, and there was no significant difference in viewing distance between any of the tasks. Specifically, a two‐way mixed ANCOVA indicated that task, refractive group (myopic vs. non‐myopic), age and arm length, as well as all two‐way interactions were not significantly associated with viewing distance. Overall, 60% of the total variance in viewing distance was accounted for by individual differences. Conclusions: The average handheld viewing distance was similar across a variety of everyday tasks in a representative sample of myopic and emmetropic children. Neither arm length, age nor refractive group were associated with viewing distance in any of the tasks. Importantly, myopic children of a given size did not hold the smartphone digital device at a different distance for any task than their equally sized non‐myopic peers. However, both groups exhibited high inter‐individual variability in mean viewing distance, indicating some subjects performed all tasks at further distances while other subjects used at nearer distances. Developing highly active catalysts for the decomposition of ammonia to produce hydrogen is an important goal in the context of renewable energy. Allied with this is a need for identification strategies to efficiently design novel catalysts integral to ensuring rapid progress in this research field. We investigated the efficacy of N–binding energy and periodic table interpolation to predict active bimetallic nanoparticle catalysts. Supported iron-platinum and iron-palladium were identified and experimentally shown to be more active than their monometallic analogues. Atomic resolution electron microscopy indicated that the most active catalyst (5 wt% Fe80Pt20/γ-Al2O3) was principally formed of alloyed nanoparticles. It restructured during testing, yet no activity loss was noted at 20 h time-on-line. While these findings show that periodic table interpolation may be a viable tool for identifying active combinations of metals, the activity of the catalysts in the current work were not able to outperform the Ru/Al2O3 benchmark. Further catalyst optimization or refinement of reaction descriptors may facilitate the development of catalysts with higher intrinsic activity than the current state-of-the-art catalysts. In this Article, we focus on a key dimension of commercial surveillance by data-intensive digital platforms that is too often treated as a supporting cast member instead of a star of the show: the concept of engagement. Engagement is, simply put, a measure of time, attention, and other interactions with a service. The economic logic of engagement is simple: more engagement equals more ads watched equals more revenue. Engagement is a lucrative digital business model, but it is problematic in several ways that lurk beneath the happy sloganeering of a "free" internet. Our goal in this Article is to isolate engagement as a distinct and dangerous concept that should be specifically regulated. There is a benefit to seeing past the glib justificatory rhetoric and taking a hard look at engagement-based, surveillance-advertising-funded models as potentially problematic. Unfettered engagement strategies bear significant and underappreciated costs that are endangering our privacy, our democracy, and our culture itself. Aim: To evaluate the impact of usual care plus a fundamental nursing care guideline compared to usual care only for patients in hospital with COVID‐19 on patient experience, care quality, functional ability, treatment outcomes, nurses' moral distress, patient health‐related quality of life and cost‐effectiveness. Design: Parallel two‐arm, cluster‐level randomized controlled trial. Methods: Between 18th January and 20th December 2021, we recruited (i) adults aged 18 years and over with COVID‐19, excluding those invasively ventilated, admitted for at least three days or nights in UK Hospital Trusts; (ii) nurses caring for them. We randomly assigned hospitals to use a fundamental nursing care guideline and usual care or usual care only. Our patient‐reported co‐primary outcomes were the Relational Aspects of Care Questionnaire and four scales from the Quality from the Patient Perspective Questionnaire. We undertook intention‐to‐treat analyses. Results: We randomized 15 clusters and recruited 581 patient and 418 nurse participants. Primary outcome data were available for 570–572 (98.1%–98.5%) patient participants in 14 clusters. We found no evidence of between‐group differences on any patient, nurse or economic outcomes. We found between‐group differences over time, in favour of the intervention, for three of our five co‐primary outcomes, and a significant interaction on one primary patient outcome for ethnicity (white British vs. other) and allocated group in favour of the intervention for the 'other' ethnicity subgroup. Conclusion: We did not detect an overall difference in patient experience for a fundamental nursing care guideline compared to usual care. We have indications the guideline may have aided sustaining good practice over time and had a more positive impact on non‐white British patients' experience of care. Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care: We cannot recommend the wholescale implementation of our guideline into routine nursing practice. Further intervention development, feasibility, pilot and evaluation studies are required. Impact: Fundamental nursing care drives patient experience but is severely impacted in pandemics. My article claims that the acceleration of the generalised planetary ecological crisis has been worsened by a form of collective reasoning called disavowal. To understand why and how this mode of reasoning in the Global North is accelerating climate boiling, I turn to Michel Serres's Le parasite and Jacques Lacan's psychoanalysis. I seek to bridge the gap between Serres and Lacan on the question of language and its connection to human intersubjectivity, and show how their conclusions reveal the mechanisms behind the cognitive dissonance at hand in the climate crisis. I claim that we can connect these two philosophers through the concept of the 'd'eux', as it relates to intersubjectivity, and I show how they both deploy and rely on the polyvalence and ambiguity of language as a rhetorical strategy to highlight the presence of a 'third', which I claim is the Serresian parasite and Lacanian big Other. This theoretical foundation underlines that one of the key aspects of our linguistic reasoning is to simply accept the imperatives of the parasite or the big Other, and thus enables the argument that our collective psychotic reasoning is, through this evil 'third', contributing to the generalised planetary ecological crisis, that we disavow. Arterial occlusion pressure (AOP) of the brachial artery was measured simultaneously using Doppler ultrasound (US), a hand-held Doppler (HHDOP), and a pulse oximeter (PO) in the dominant (DOM) and nondominant (NDOM) arms of males (n = 21) and females (n = 23) using continuous (CONT) and incremental (INCR) cuff inflation protocols. A mixed-model analysis of variance revealed significant (p, 0.05) overall main effects between AOP measured using a CONT (115.7 ± 10.9) or INCR (115.0 ± 11.5) cuff inflation protocol; between AOP measured using US (116.3 ± 11.2), HHDOP (115.4 ± 11.2), and PO (114.4 ± 11.2); and between males (120.7 6 10.6) and females (110.569.4). The small overall difference (1.8163.3) between US and PO measures of AOP was significant (p, 0.05), but the differences between US and HHDOP and between HHDOP and PO measures of AOP were not significant. There were no overall differences in AOP between the DOM and NDOM arms. Trial-to-trial variance in US measurements of AOP was not significant when using either cuff inflation protocol but was significant when using HHDOP and PO and a CONT cuff inflation protocol. Bland-Altman plots revealed reasonable limits of agreement for both HHDOP and PO measures of AOP. The small differences in US, HHDOP, and PO measurements of AOP when using CONT or INCR cuff inflation protocols are of minimal practical importance. Background: Alcohol‐induced blackouts (AIBs) are common in college students. Individuals with AIBs also experience acute and chronic alcohol‐related consequences. Research suggests that how students drink is an important predictor of AIBs. We used transdermal alcohol concentration (TAC) sensors to measure biomarkers of increasing alcohol intoxication (rise rate, peak, and rise duration) in a sample of college students. We hypothesized that the TAC biomarkers would be positively associated with AIBs. Methods: Students were eligible to participate if they were aged 18–22 years, in their second or third year of college, reported drinking 4+ drinks on a typical Friday or Saturday, experienced ≥1 AIB in the past semester, owned an iPhone, and were willing to wear a sensor for 3 days each weekend. Students (N = 79, 55.7% female, 86.1% White, Mage = 20.1) wore TAC sensors and completed daily diaries over four consecutive weekends (89.9% completion rate). AIBs were assessed using the Alcohol‐Induced Blackout Measure‐2. Logistic multilevel models were conducted to test for main effects. Results: Days with faster TAC rise rates (OR = 2.69, 95% CI: 1.56, 5.90), higher peak TACs (OR = 2.93, 95% CI: 1.64, 7.11), and longer rise TAC durations (OR = 4.16, 95% CI: 2.08, 10.62) were associated with greater odds of experiencing an AIB. Conclusions: In a sample of "risky" drinking college students, three TAC drinking features identified as being related to rising intoxication independently predicted the risk for daily AIBs. Our findings suggest that considering how an individual drinks (assessed using TAC biomarkers), rather than quantity alone, is important for assessing risk and has implications for efforts to reduce risk. Not only is speed of intoxication important for predicting AIBs, but the height of the peak intoxication and the time spent reaching the peak are important predictors, each with different implications for prevention. Summary: Glucagon‐like peptide 1 (GLP‐1) receptor agonists are revolutionizing obesity and type 2 diabetes treatment, delivering remarkable weight loss outcomes. These medications, leveraging the effects of the insulin‐regulating hormone GLP‐1 via actions on peripheral and central nervous system targets, have raised hopes with their bariatric surgery‐rivaling results. However, questions remain about their long‐term safety and efficacy. Drawing from our expertise in obesity medicine and psychiatry, we reflect upon our experiences with the clinical use of these medications and delve into the nuanced challenges and risks they pose, particularly for those prone to disordered eating or those diagnosed with rare genetic diseases of obesity. We contend that effectively managing weight loss within this "danger zone" necessitates (1) proactive screening and continuous monitoring for disordered eating, (2) vigilant monitoring for appetite‐related maladaptive responses, including food aversion and dehydration, and (3) ongoing assessment for broader health impacts. A multifaceted, interdisciplinary approach that melds medical, psychological, dietary, and behavioral strategies is crucial to delivering tailored and thorough care to each patient. Cattle heat stress causes billions of dollars' worth of losses to meat and milk production globally, and is projected to become more severe in the future due to climate change. Tree establishment in pastoral livestock systems holds potential to reduce cattle heat stress and thus provide nature‐based adaptation. We developed a general model for the impact of trees on cattle heat stress, which can project milk and meat production under future climate scenarios at varying spatial scales. The model incorporates the key microclimate mechanisms influenced by trees, including shade, air temperature, humidity, and wind speed. We conducted sensitivity analyses to demonstrate the relative influence of different mechanisms through which trees can impact cattle heat stress, and how tree impacts are influenced by climatic context globally. Trees hold the greatest potential to reduce cattle heat stress in higher latitudes and altitudes, with minor benefits in the lowland tropics. We projected the future contributions of current trees in mitigating climate change impacts on the dairy and beef herds of Aotearoa—New Zealand (A‐NZ) in 2070–2080. Trees were simulated to contribute to A‐NZ milk yields by over 491 million liters (lower CI = 112 million liters, upper CI = 850 million liters), and meat yields by over 8316 tonnes (lower CI = 2431 tonnes, upper CI = 13,668 tonnes) annually. The total economic contribution of existing trees in mitigating future cattle heat stress was valued at $US 244 million (lower CI = $US 58 million, upper CI = $US 419 million). Our findings demonstrate the importance of existing trees in pastoral landscapes and suggest that strategic tree establishment can be a valuable adaptation option for reducing cattle heat stress under climate change. Background: Growing evidence for the effect of maternal obesity on childhood asthma motivates investigation of mediating pathways. Objective: To investigate if childhood body mass index (BMI), gestational weight gain (GWG) and preterm birth mediate the association of maternal obesity on childhood asthma risk. Methods: We used electronic medical records from mother–child pairs enrolled in Kaiser Permanente Northern California integrated healthcare system. Children were followed from their birth (2005–2014) until at least age 4 (n = 95,723), age 6 (n = 59,230) or age 8 (n = 25,261). Childhood asthma diagnosis at each age was determined using ICD‐9/10 codes and medication dispensings. Prepregnancy BMI (underweight [<18.5], normal [18.5–24.9], overweight [25–29.9], obese [≥30] kg/m2) were defined using height and weight measurements close to the last menstrual period date. Child's BMI (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention BMI‐for‐age percentiles: underweight [<5th], normal [5th–85th], overweight [85th–95th], obese [>95th]) were obtained using anthropometric measurements taken the year preceding each follow‐up age. GWG (delivery weight‐prepregnancy weight) was categorised based on Institutes of Medicine recommendations (inadequate, adequate, excessive). Implementing first causal inference test (CIT) then causal mediator models (to decompose the natural direct and indirect effects), we examined the potential mediating effect of childhood BMI, GWG, and preterm birth on the association between prepregnancy BMI (continuous and categorical) and childhood asthma. Results: Overall, risk of childhood asthma increased as prepregnancy BMI increased (age 4 risk ratio: 1.07, 95% confidence interval: 1.04, 1.09, per 5 kg/m2 increase in BMI; similar for age 6 and 8). CIT identified childhood BMI and preterm birth, but not GWG as potential mediators. Causal mediation models confirmed childhood BMI, but not preterm birth, as having a partial mediating effect. Results were similar for age 6 and 8, and when continuous mediators (instead of binary) were assessed. This study assessed how global map projections affect perceptions of the importance of world regions and beliefs about geopolitical events. We tested whether the Mercator projection, which represents polar regions as being larger than their actual landmass, compared to the Gall-Peters projection, an equal-area map that represents landmass proportionately, alters evaluations of the U.S.' proposal to purchase Greenland. In a 2 (map projection: Mercator vs. Gall-Peters) × 2 (emphasis frame: economic vs. national security) experiment, we found that people attributed greater importance to Russia after viewing the Mercator projection only when the arguments paired with the map adopted a national security frame. Aims Among individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD), sleep disturbances are pervasive and contribute to the etiology and maintenance of AUD. However, despite increased attention toward the relationship between alcohol use and sleep, limited empirical research has systematically examined whether reductions in drinking during treatment for AUD are associated with improvements in sleep problems. Methods We used data from a multisite, randomized, controlled trial that compared 6 months of treatment with gabapentin enacarbil extended-release with placebo for adults with moderate-to-severe AUD (N  = 346). The Timeline Follow-back was used to assess WHO risk drinking level reductions and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to assess sleep quality over the prior month at baseline and the end of treatment. Results Sleep problem scores in the active medication and placebo groups improved equally. Fewer sleep problems were noted among individuals who achieved at least a 1-level reduction (B  = −0.99, 95% confidence interval (CI) [−1.77, −0.20], P  = .014) or at least a 2-level reduction (B  = −0.80, 95% CI [−1.47, −0.14], P  = .018) in WHO risk drinking levels at the end of treatment. Reductions in drinking, with abstainers excluded from the analysis, also predicted fewer sleep problems at the end of treatment (1-level: B  = −1.01, 95% CI [−1.83, −0.20], P  = .015; 2-level: B  = −0.90, 95% CI [−1.59, −0.22], P  = .010). Conclusions Drinking reductions, including those short of abstinence, are associated with improvements in sleep problems during treatment for AUD. Introduction: With rapidly growing members of the Islamic faith, health care providers should expect to care for Muslim patients regardless of their chosen specialty. The quality of care provided hinges on their knowledge and understanding of Islam. This study aimed to analyze the influence of an educational animation on undergraduate nursing students' cultural comfort and knowledge concerning the health care needs of Muslims. Methods: An educational animation was created addressing the unique health care needs of Muslim patients. Surveys (pre, post, 6 weeks) (n = 658) assessed cultural comfort and knowledge on covered topics. Results: Student knowledge (pre: 12.4 ± 0.1; post: 14.4 ± 0.2; p <.01) and cultural comfort (pre: 4.0 ± 0.03; post: 4.1 ± 0.03; p <.05) increased after viewing the online educational animation. The increase in knowledge was sustained at 6 weeks. Students recommended additional topics for the future. Discussion: This study highlights how an innovative educational animation can enhance students' understanding of providing care for Muslim patients, positively impacting patient outcomes. Post-event rumination, the extent to which one engages in persistent, detailed, and negative thinking following social situations, serves as a risk process in the pathophysiology of social anxiety. Although a substantial body of research has assessed post-event rumination and social anxiety, this literature has produced inconsistent results. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine whether the magnitude of the association between post-event rumination and social anxiety varied as a function of questionnaire and/or task utilized. We included all studies reporting a correlation between post-event rumination and social anxiety symptomatology. Fisher's z correlation coefficients were calculated through random-effect meta-analyses. Results indicated a moderate association between post-event rumination and social anxiety symptomatology (r = 0.45, p < 0.001, 95%CI [0.40–0.50]). Subgroup meta-analyses indicated that the type of questionnaire used to assess post-event rumination (Q = 44.36, df = 3, p < 0.001) and social anxiety (Q = 26.44, df = 8, p < 0.001), as well as the task conducted prior to assessing post-event rumination (Q = 14.31, df = 2, p < 0.001), influenced the effect size. This study demonstrates a moderate relation between post-event rumination and social anxiety across the anxiety spectrum, illustrating the importance of treatments specifically targeting post-event rumination. Moreover, we highlight the importance of taking care when designing studies to explore relations between post-event rumination and social anxiety. • Greater post-event rumination is associated with greater social anxiety. • Across 35 studies, the meta-analytic effect size of this relation is moderate. • The magnitude of this effect size depends on the questionnaires and tasks used. Purpose: Women and children continue to miss preventive visits. Which neighborhood factors predict inadequate prenatal care (PNC) and well-child visit (WCV) attendance remain unclear. Description: In a retrospective case–control study at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System, mothers with less than 50% adherence or initiation after 5 months gestation were eligible as cases and those with ≥ 80% adherence and initiation before 5 months were eligible as controls. Children in the lowest quintile of adherence were eligible as cases and those with ≥ 80% of adherence were eligible as controls. Cases and controls were randomly selected at a 1:2 ratio and matched on birth month. Covariates were derived from the 2018 American Community Survey. A hotspot was defined as a zip code tabulation area (ZCTA) with a proportion of controls less than 0.66. ZCTAs with fewer than 5 individuals were excluded. Weighted quantile regression was used to determine which covariates were most associated with inadequate attendance. Assessment: We identified 38 and 35 ZCTAs for the PNC and WCV analyses, respectively. Five of 11 hotspots for WCV were also hotspots for PNC. Education and income predicted 51% and 34% of the variation in missed PNCs, respectively; language, education and transportation difficulties explained 33%, 29%, and 17% of the variation in missed WCVs, respectively. Higher proportions of Black residents lived in hotspots of inadequate PCV and WCV attendance. Conclusion: Neighborhood-level factors performed well in predicting inadequate PCV and WCV attendance. The disproportionate impact impact of inadequate PCV and WCV in neighborhoods where higher proportions of Black people lived highlights the potential influence of systemic racism and segregation on healthcare utilization. Significance: What is already known on this subject? Many pregnant women and children continue to miss preventive visits. It is not known what geographic factors contribute to missed visits. What this study adds? Neighborhood-level factors performed well in predicting inadequate prenatal care and well-child attendance. There were disproportionate missed preventive visits in neighborhoods where higher proportions of Black people lived, highlighting the role of systemic racism and segregation on healthcare utilization. School administrators represent key agents of socialization for teachers within their schools, including adapted physical educators who design and implement instruction for youth with disabilities, often across multiple school sites. The purpose of this study was to understand how adapted physical educators navigate and build relationships with administrators in the schools where they teach. Data were collected through semistructured interviews with 24 adapted physical educators from the U.S. state of California and analyzed using a multiphase approach. Analysis suggested both the importance of and challenges with building effective relationships with administrators. Themes included the following: (a) Administrators do not understand adapted physical education, which impacts programs and students; (b) the importance of relationship building in cultivating principal support; and (c) relationship development requires intentionality, but results in trust and motivation. This paper examines staff perspectives on institutional representations of a range of areas of diversity and inclusion in a key post-compulsory education sector: that of UK Higher Education (HE). The paper focuses on comparing representational statements made by institutions with the reality of their lived experiences as perceived by staff. The paper first reviews literature around key issues of promoting and progressing in these areas, and how these areas are represented by institutions and the sector as a whole. It presents and discusses data from a survey (n = 300) to show strong agreement with representational statements as mirroring those of institutions, yet statistically significant differences between representations and the reality of lived experiences, particularly in relation to the lived experiences of staff. These data are discussed in the light of progress made by institutions, and the challenges faced in translating representations into real lived experience. Suggestions for institutions and policy makers are made to help better align reality with these representations in the UK Higher Education sector and, theoretically, for post-compulsory education sectors elsewhere. Bournonite (CuPbSbS3) and enargite (Cu3AsS4) have recently been used as absorber layers in thin-film photovoltaic devices due to their ideal bandgap and ferroelectric properties. An understanding of the ferroelectric domain structure in these materials is required so that the benefits of the internal depolarizing electric fields can be fully exploited. Here, the atomic structure and electronic properties of domain walls (DWs) are elucidated through a combined aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and density functional theory study. ∼90° and 180° DWs are observed in bournonite. As the 180° DW is charge neutral, it cannot contribute to the anomalous photovoltaic effect that leads to high open circuit voltages. The ∼90° DW shows a slight offset across the boundary, but the contributions of this to the anomalous photovoltaic effect are negligible. The DWs are also electrically passive, i.e., they do not result in significant recombination and do not block charge carrier transport. A high density of stacking faults (SF) was, however, observed in enargite. The SFs have a large number of defect states within the bandgap, which would lower the device efficiency through Shockley–Read–Hall recombination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AbstractThe undergraduate mental health nursing course is an optimal time to address stigma and prejudice, while developing positive student attitudes toward those who live with mental health conditions. A quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest, nonequivalent-group study with a sample of undergraduate nursing students in New York City (N = 126) was conducted to determine the impact of an undergraduate mental health nursing course on attitudes toward people living with a general mental illness, depression, or schizophrenia. The intervention resulted in a significant reduction in total prejudice scores toward those with a general mental illness when compared to the control (p = 0.033, partial η2 = 0.062). The intervention had no significant impact on total prejudice scores regarding those with depression, or schizophrenia. Subscale analysis revealed the intervention significantly reduced attitudes of fear/avoidance regarding general mental illness (p = 0.040, partial η2 = 0.058) and schizophrenia (p < 0.001, partial η2 = 0.164). There was no impact on authoritarian or malevolent attitudes. Though some attitudes were not amenable to change, this study provides evidence that positive attitudes can be cultivated through undergraduate nursing education. Curricular reform is needed to reduce all facets of prejudice and best prepare future nurses to care for those with mental health conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Psychotherapy practice is a human endeavour. Research on the specific and non‐specific factors of treatment has helped crystallise its relevance and clinical impact. The challenges currently faced by the field revolve around ensuring access to evidence‐based treatments and enhancing their effectiveness. Digitally delivered formats of empirically supported treatments increase access while supporting the relevance of the treatment‐specific ingredients and the necessity for human guidance. Excitement surrounds the potential integration of novel artificial intelligence (AI) machine learning methods to advance psychotherapy effectiveness. The abundance of data in digitally delivered formats positions them well to harness the capabilities of AI. Recent work provides proof of concept in areas including detection and diagnosis, predicting outcomes, treatment adherence, remission and relapse. A potential risk emerges when applying machine learning methods, in which an overreliance on AI inferences may overshadow the human aspect of psychotherapy. The contrast is simple: we may over‐invest in the rationality and relevance of our AI inferences, blindly obeying the algorithmic counsel that may lead to unintended consequences, such as oversimplifying human complexity. This would amount to changing psychotherapy from a human‐centric to a techno‐centric endeavour, something we should steadily avoid. This perspective highlights the importance of balancing enthusiasm for AI advancements with a cautious approach. The discussion outlines the risks associated with overdependence on AI and provides reasons to avoid a scenario in which psychotherapy loses its human essence. In conclusion, the perspective suggests avenues for future research to prevent such a transformation and maintain the human‐centric nature of psychotherapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Geothermal heat flow is a key parameter in governing ice dynamics, via its influence on basal melt and sliding, englacial rheology, and erosion. It is expected to exhibit significant lateral variability across Antarctica. Despite this, surface heat flow derived from Earth's interior remains one of the most poorly constrained parameters controlling ice sheet evolution. To obtain a continent‐wide map of Antarctic heat supply at regional‐scale resolution, we estimate upper mantle thermomechanical structure directly from VS. Until now, direct inferences of Antarctic heat supply have assumed constant crustal composition. Here, we explore a range of crustal conductivity and radiogenic heat production values by fitting thermodynamically self‐consistent geotherms to their seismically inferred counterparts. Independent estimates of crustal conductivity derived from VP are integrated to break an observed trade‐off between crustal parameters, allowing us to infer Antarctic geothermal heat flow and its associated uncertainty. Plain Language Summary: The future evolution of the Antarctic Ice Sheet depends on its stability, which describes how sensitive it is to environmental change. A key factor influencing ice sheet stability is how much thermal energy is transferred into its base from Earth's interior: a parameter called geothermal heat flow. If the level of heat supply is high, melting at the base of the ice sheet is encouraged, resulting in enhanced sliding toward outlet glaciers at the continental perimeter. Consequently, ice loss is accelerated, and the likelihood of glacial collapse is increased. Therefore, an accurate map of Antarctic geothermal heat flow, including how this parameter varies from region to region, is needed to produce high quality projections of Antarctic ice mass loss and therefore global sea level change. In this study, we use models of how seismic wave speed varies within Earth to estimate its three‐dimensional temperature structure, as well as its thermal conductivity. These data are used to infer a collection of best‐fitting models of Earth's thermal state, and hence estimate Antarctic geothermal heat flow. Although histone proteins are widely known for their intranuclear functions where they organize DNA, all five histone types can also be released into the extracellular space from damaged cells. Extracellular histones can interact with pattern recognition receptors of peripheral immune cells, including toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), causing pro-inflammatory activation, which indicates they may act as damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) in peripheral tissues. Very limited information is available about functions of extracellular histones in the central nervous system (CNS). To address this knowledge gap, we applied mixed histones (MH) to cultured cells modeling neurons, microglia, and astrocytes. Microglia are the professional CNS immunocytes, while astrocytes are the main support cells for neurons. Both these cell types are critical for neuroimmune responses and their dysregulated activity contributes to neurodegenerative diseases. We measured effects of extracellular MH on cell viability and select neuroimmune functions of microglia and astrocytes. MH were toxic to cultured primary murine neurons and also reduced viability of NSC-34 murine and SH-SY5Y human neuron-like cells in TLR4-dependent manner. MH did not affect the viability of resting or immune-stimulated BV-2 murine microglia or U118 MG human astrocytic cells. When applied to BV-2 cells, MH enhanced secretion of the potential neurotoxin glutamate, but did not modulate the release of nitric oxide (NO), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF), C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 10 (CXCL10), or the overall cytotoxicity of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)- and/or interferon (IFN)-γ-stimulated BV-2 microglial cells towards NSC-34 neuron-like cells. We demonstrated, for the first time, that MH downregulated phagocytic activity of LPS-stimulated BV-2 microglia. However, MH also exhibited protective effect by ameliorating the cytotoxicity of LPS-stimulated U118 MG astrocytic cells towards SH-SY5Y neuron-like cells. Our data demonstrate extracellular MH could both damage neurons and alter neuroimmune functions of glial cells. These actions of MH could be targeted for treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Demographic histories are frequently a product of the environment, as populations expand or contract in response to major environmental changes, often driven by changes in climate. Meso‐ and bathy‐pelagic fishes inhabit some of the most temporally and spatially stable habitats on the planet. The stability of the deep‐pelagic could make deep‐pelagic fishes resistant to the demographic instability commonly reported in fish species inhabiting other marine habitats, however the demographic histories of deep‐pelagic fishes are unknown. We reconstructed the historical demography of 11 species of deep‐pelagic fishes using mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequence data. We uncovered widespread evidence of population expansions in our study species, a counterintuitive result based on the nature of deep‐pelagic ecosystems. Frequency‐based methods detected potential demographic changes in nine species of fishes, while extended Bayesian skyline plots identified population expansions in four species. These results suggest that despite the relatively stable nature of the deep‐pelagic environment, the fishes that reside here have likely been impacted by past changes in climate. Further investigation is necessary to better understand how deep‐pelagic fishes, by far Earth's most abundant vertebrates, will respond to future climatic changes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The First Episode Rapid Early Intervention for Eating Disorders (FREED) service has been shown to reduce the wait for care and improve clinical outcomes in initial evaluations. These findings led to the national scaling of FREED in England. To support this scaling, we conducted a mixed method evaluation of the perceptions and experiences of clinicians in the early phases of scaling. The Normalisation Process Theory (NPT) was used as a conceptual lens to understand if and how FREED becomes embedded in routine practice. Methods: The convergent mixed method evaluation included 21 semi-structured interviews with clinicians from early adopter sites and 211 surveys administered to clinicians before, immediately after and 3 months after the FREED training. The interview guide and survey included questions evaluating attitudes towards early intervention for eating disorders (EDs) and NPT mechanisms. Interview data were analysed using an inductive thematic analysis. The NPT was applied to the inductively derived themes to evaluate if and how NPT domains impacted the implementation. Survey data were analysed using multilevel growth models. Results: Six themes and 15 subthemes captured barriers and facilitators to implementation at the patient, clinician, service, intervention, implementation and wider system levels. These interacted with the NPT mechanisms to facilitate or hinder the embedding of FREED. Overall, clinicians were enthusiastic and positive towards early intervention for EDs and FREED, largely because of the expectation of improved patient outcomes. This was a considerable driver in the uptake and implementation of FREED. Clinicians also had reservations about capacity and the potential impact on other patients, which, at times, was a barrier for its use. The FREED training led to significant improvements in positive attitudes and NPT mechanisms that were largely maintained at the 3-month follow-up. However, negative attitudes did not significantly improve following training. Conclusions: Positive attitudes towards early intervention for EDs increased enthusiasm and engagement with the model. Features of the model and its implementation were effective at developing adopter commitment and capabilities. However, there were aspects of the model and its implementation which require attention in the future (e.g., capacity and the potential impact on the wider service). Plain english summary: First Episode Rapid Early Intervention for Eating Disorders (FREED) is an early intervention service for 16-to-25-year-olds who have had an eating disorder (ED) for three years or less. Studies have shown that FREED can reduce the length of time that people wait for treatment and that it improves outcomes. However, it was unclear what it was like for clinicians trying to deliver the service. We used questionnaires and interviews with clinicians who were preparing to or already delivering FREED to understand what they thought about it and their experiences of delivering it. Overall, clinicians were positive and enthusiastic about early intervention for EDs and FREED because they believed that it could improve patient outcomes. This enthusiasm and features of the FREED model and support facilitated its delivery. However, clinicians were worried about their ability to deliver FREED with limited resources and the impact this might have on patients who are not eligible for the service. Resources were a major barrier to providing treatment as quickly as possible. This study suggests that FREED was well-received by those delivering it and that many parts of the service and support were helpful, but resource issues need to be addressed in the future.
