One of the key parameters in radio link planning is the propagation path loss. Most of the existing methods for its prediction are not characterized by a good balance between accuracy, generality, and low computational complexity. To address this problem, a machine learning approach for path loss prediction is presented in this study. The novelty is the proposal of a compound model, which consists of two regression models and one classifier. The first regression model is adequate when a line-of-sight scenario is fulfilled in radio wave propagation, whereas the second one is appropriate for non-line-of-sight conditions. The classification model is intended to provide a probabilistic output, through which the outputs of the regression models are combined. The number of used input parameters is only five. They are related to the distance, the antenna heights, and the statistics of the terrain profile and line-of-sight obstacles. The proposed approach allows creation of a generalized model that is valid for various types of areas and terrains, different antenna heights, and line-of-sight and non line-of-sight propagation conditions. An experimental dataset is provided by measurements for a variety of relief types (flat, hilly, mountain, and foothill) and for rural, urban, and suburban areas. The experimental results show an excellent performances in terms of a root mean square error of a prediction as low as 7.3 dB and a coefficient of determination as high as 0.702. Although the study covers only one operating frequency of 433 M Hz , the proposed model can be trained and applied for any frequency in the decimeter wavelength range. The main reason for the choice of such an operating frequency is because it falls within the range in which many wireless systems of different types are operating. • HF & VHF radars, making measurements of resident space objects, detect Doppler oscillations. • The Doppler oscillations are interpreted as waves propagating in the ionosphere. • Statistical analysis shows the waves have a frequency distribution in the 0.2–1 Hz range. • The waves are most likely observed during day with higher frequencies in weaker ionospheres. • The wave frequency and occurrence distributions suggest the most likely waves are EMIC waves. Radars performing observations of resident space objects (RSO) measure Doppler variations in wave events of several minutes duration, with frequencies in the 0.2–1 Hz range peaking near 0.5–0.7 Hz, consistent with variations in electron density induced by waves in the intervening ionosphere. The two mid-latitude radars used were a Very High Frequency (VHF) radar operating at 55 MHz, and a High Frequency (HF) radar operating at 30 MHz, both in southern Australia. The VHF radar wave observations exibited a peak in wave occurrence in the post-dawn sector (0600–1200 local solar time). The seasonal occurrence of the waves had a strong minimum during winter compared with the other seasons. Comparison between observations in 2018/19 (near solar minimum) and 2021/22 (mid-rise to cycle 25 peak) suggests wave occurrence is anti-correlated with sunspot number and hence with EUV and ionospheric strength. Generally the waves had higher frequencies during night than day, and low sunspot number than mid solar cycle, when there was a weaker ionosphere. Given the oscillation frequency of the wave events, the most likely geophysical phenomena that is consistent with the observations are electro-magnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) plasma waves in the Pc1 (0.2–5 Hz) frequency range. No other candidate geophysical disturbance appears to fit the wave characteristics. The majority of geomagnetic field-guided transverse Pc1 EMICWs project from the outer magnetosphere down onto the polar ionosphere, where they can convert to compressional fast-mode waves propagating parallel to the Earths surface in the ionospheric F2 layer waveguide, both equatorwards to mid-latitudes and polewards. It is likely the majority of the Doppler oscillations in the Pc1 frequency range observed by the radars at mid-latitudes are these ducted compressional waves. However, sources of transverse EMICWs from the magnetosphere onto the mid-latitude ionosphere do exist, and these may cause some of the observed oscillations. The micro-physics of these compressional waves causing Doppler oscillations in radio observations is not inconsistent with the history of ionospheric Doppler measurements and theory, although the radar trans-ionospheric radio propagation and the observed waves being higher frequency than previous studies is different. If the observed Doppler oscillations are compressional EMICW in the ionospheric waveguide then several of the statistical results can be explained. The anti-correlation of the wave occurrence with sunspot number (and resultant ionospheric strength) can be attributed to lower ionospheric attenuation at the higher latitudes, between where geomagnetically field-guided transverse EMIC waves initially enter the high-latitude ionospheric waveguide from the magnetosphere above, and their observation at mid-latitudes. The observation of higher frequency waves during low sunspot number may also be explained by a source effect in the magnetosphere that preferentially selects the higher frequency field-guided transverse EMIC waves to propagate down to the ionosphere. Comparisons will be shown with results from ground and space based magnetometers of compressional waves in the waveguide, highlighting consistent results and areas where the measurement techniques differ. Theory suggests the radar Doppler measurements are far more sensitive to variations in in-situ ionospheric electron density than magnetic field variations. This agrees with existing literature which highlights the very strong contribution from the compressional component. Theory also suggests that the Doppler sensitivity of a radar to ionospheric electron density variations is frequency dependent, with lower frequencies being more sensitive. The results of measuring VLF signal parameters propagating in the Earth-D-region of the ionosphere waveguide to assess changes in the state of the lower ionosphere as a result of the impact of X-ray radiation of solar flares make it possible to obtain qualitative data on the nature and magnitude of the impact. Obtaining accurate data on the relationship between changes in electron concentration and flare parameters and reliable prediction of the conditions of LF radio signal propagation during strong geophysical disturbances is complicated by the lack of complete information on the frequency spectrum of X-ray radiation for a particular flare and data on the ionization rate of the ionosphere for flares of different classes. The technique of determining the X-ray spectrum in a wide range of wavelengths and calculating the ionization coefficients of the lower ionosphere as a function of the ionizing radiation parameters of flares, presented by Ryakhovsky et al. (2023), makes it possible to improve the accuracy in estimating variations in the parameters of the lower ionosphere. The present paper is devoted to verifying the performance of the developed empirical model of lower ionization of the lower ionosphere at the solar flare front and comparing the results with experimental data on the variation of VLF radio parameters. Active development of the Arctic and increased intensity of navigation along the Northern Sea Route and air traffic in the Arctic Ocean airspace draws attention to the problem of disruptions of transpolar radio wave propagation. In high-latitude regions, the passage of navigation signals of global positioning systems depends on the state of the ionosphere. During geomagnetic disturbances, ionospheric inhomogeneities develop that interfere with satellite positioning systems. The position and shape of auroras depend on the state of the magnetosphere. In this study, the component model of the auroral magnetic field has been calculated for the first time using the updated digital model of the full values of Earth's magnetic field components of the St. Petersburg Branch of the Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, Ionosphere, and Radio Wave Propagation of the Russian Academy of Sciences for the first time. The magnetic field of the auroral zone was calculated for heights from 0 to 1000 km for the period from 1900 to 2023, including for heights of 100–110 km, where the intensity of auroras reaches its maximum in the near-Earth space of the Arctic. The spatial displacement of the auroral oval has been estimated for the period from 1957 (its first mathematical description) to the present. As the analysis showed, the displacement of the boundaries of the auroral oval during the period under consideration has occurred in time and in space codirectionally with the displacement of the isolines of the extremes of the horizontal and vertical components of the auroral magnetic field of the Northern Hemisphere. The micro and small unmanned aerial vehicles (msUAVs) internet of things has been widely used in different fields. At the same time, the disordered flight of msUAVs inevitably become a potential threat to public security (such as airports, railway stations, major event venues, etc.). In view of the safety problem of msUAVs, the anti-micro and small unmanned aerial vehicles (AmsUAVs) is used to solve the defense problem of msUAVs in public safety places. The system blocks the communication link of the msUAVs by transmitting high power to achieve the purpose of low altitude control. At the same time, the AmsUAVs will also cause interference to the uplink of other nearby radio communication systems, such as civil aviation and mobile communication systems, In this paper, an analysis method based on the interference-to-noise ratio (INR) criterion is proposed and interference analysis is performed on AmsUAVs and some mobile communication systems uplink. First, to control msUAVs, it is necessary to calculate the minimum transmit power of the AmsUAVs in the corresponding frequency band according to the uplink and the radio wave propagation distance of the msUAVs. Second, to avoid harmful interference to other radio commnication systems (e.g., CDMA and TD-LTE), the frequency and distance separation between the AmsUAVs and mobile communication systems should be calculated according to factors such as application scenarios, radio wave propagation distance, and working frequency band. Finally, a simulation analysis provides the transmit power, off-axis angle, frequency separation, and distance separation of the AmsUAVs and mobile communication base station in different environments. Low Earth orbit (LEO) radio occultation|radio occultations (RO) constellations can provide global electron density profiles (EDPs) to better specify and forecast the ionosphere‐thermosphere (I‐T) system. To inform future RO constellation design, this study uses comprehensive Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs) to assess the ionospheric specification impact of assimilating synthetic EDPs into a coupled I‐T model. These OSSEs use 10 different sets of RO constellation configurations containing 6 or 12 LEO satellites with base orbit parameter combinations of 520 or 800 km altitude, and 24° or 72° inclination. The OSSEs are performed using the Ensemble Adjustment Kalman Filter implemented in the data assimilation (DA) Research Testbed and the Thermosphere‐Ionosphere‐Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIEGCM). A different I‐T model is used for the nature run, the Whole Atmosphere Model‐Ionosphere Plasmasphere Electrodynamics (WAM‐IPE), to simulate the period of interest is the St. Patrick's Day storm on March 13–18, 2015. Errors from models and EDP retrieval are realistically accounted for in this study through distinct I‐T models and by retrieving synthetic EDPs through an extension Abel inversion algorithm. OSSE assessment, using multiple metrics, finds that greater EDP spatial coverage leading to improved specification at altitudes 300 km and above, with the 520 km altitude constellations performing best due to yielding the highest observation counts. A potential performance limit is suggested with two 6‐satellite constellations. Lastly, close examination of Abel inversion error impacts highlights major EDP limitations at altitudes below 200 km and dayside equatorial regions with large horizontal gradients and low electron density magnitudes. Developing observing systems that provide global monitoring of the ionosphere is a critical need for understanding and forecasting space weather changes, such as radio occultations (RO) that provide plasma observations using global positioning radio signals. In this study, we evaluate these hypothetical RO observing systems in simulated experiments using data assimilation (DA), an approach that integrates synthetic observations into a physics‐based model. We find that increased observational coverage corresponds to better estimated plasma states, and that lower orbit altitude constellations yield higher observation counts. This study comprehensively incorporates model and observation errors to more realistically represent real‐world conditions. One limitation of RO data is highlighted in regions near the equator and at lower altitudes (below 250 km) where there is a breakdown in assumptions for observation retrieval. This study illustrates the clear operational benefits of these plasma observations, informing the future observing system design and aiding their use for space weather forecasting. A good understanding of the behavior of the atmosphere is a key factor in radio wave propagation and link's design. This study investigated the influence of refractivity gradient, effective earth radius factor (k-factor) and geo-climatic factor (K-factor) on radio communication over the cities of Kaduna, Katsina and Sokoto, in Northwestern parts of Nigeria. Forty-one year's secondary data (1980–2020) of temperature, pressure and humidity at the surface 12, 100 and 250 m above ground level retrieved from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMRWF) ERA-5 reanalysis were used for the study. The three secondary radio-climatic parameters under investigation were computed and analyzed using latest ITU-R (Rec.P.453-14 (08/2019)) Models. It was observed that secondary radio-climatic variables exhibit seasonal type dependence. The research also reveals that the secondary radio-climatic variables depend on location, with all the study locations having different values. The highest value of refractivity gradient obtained is about −75.06 (N-units / km) in the month of February in Sokoto while the least of about −162.65 (N-units/km) was recorded in Kaduna in September. The value of the refractivity gradient is higher during the dry season compared to the wet season months with Sokoto recording the highest values for more than half of the months, followed by Katsina. Kaduna recorded highest number of lowest values of refractivity gradient. For the geoclimatic factor, it was revealed that Kaduna has an average maximum geoclimatic factor of 14.0000E-5 in September and an average minimum of 9.6677E-05 in February. Furthermore, the obtained values of k factor values for the study areas are higher than the standard value of, 4 3 (1.33). The k-factor in Kaduna ranges from 1.69 to 2.16 with mean value of 1.85 for dry season while for the wet season it ranges from 2.66 to 4.12 with a mean value of 3.74; the overall mean value for Kaduna is 2.80. In Katsina, it ranges from 1.66 to 2.20 with mean value of 1.81 for dry season while for the wet season it ranges from 1.95 to 4.00 with a mean value of 3.27; the overall mean value is 2.54. In Sokoto it ranges from 1.60 to 2.30 with mean value of 1.78 for dry season while for the wet season it ranges from 1.72 to 3.45 with a mean value of 2.59; the overall mean value is 2.19. The interpretation of this is that, radio signal propagation in the Northwest region of Nigeria is super-refractive. The overall findings of this research are essential for estimating location-dependent fade margins, which are useful for the design of wireless communication links for the region. In the design and optimisation of marine wireless communication and navigation systems, a thorough investigation of radio wave propagation characteristics under atmospheric ducting conditions is essential. The authors aim to enhance the efficiency of radio wave propagation loss prediction in marine atmospheric ducting environments, proposing a prediction model based on Fast Reordered‐Alternate Direction Decomposition (FR‐ADD). By approximating the diffraction term into three independent components, exploiting the commutative properties of the Fourier transform to reduce the spatial dimensions, and incorporating a rapid algorithm for the parabolic equation, the model optimises the stepping process and significantly improves computational efficiency. Simulation experiments demonstrate that, in the long‐distance and complex marine ducting environments, the model not only maintains prediction accuracy but also substantially reduces computational load and prediction time, effectively realising over‐the‐horizon propagation prediction. In the experiment of radio wave propagation characteristics in the Yellow and Bohai Seas, the simulation data from the FR‐ADD model showed significant correlation with actual measurements and simulations from the AREPS software, confirming the method's efficiency and practicality. Propagation models are essential for the prediction of received signal strength and the planning of wireless systems in a given environment. The vector parabolic equation (VPE) method has been widely applied to the modelling of radio wave propagation in tunnels. However, carrying out simulations for large‐scale environments is still computationally expensive. A convolutional neural network (CNN)‐based propagation model, which can provide high‐fidelity received signal strength prediction based on results from low‐cost VPE simulations, is proposed. A thorough study of the generalisability, including both interpolation and extrapolation capabilities, of the proposed CNN model is conducted. It is found that the proposed model can achieve significant computational savings while maintaining acceptable accuracy, and its performance is validated in both simulations and actual tunnel cases. The ground‐based, high‐frequency radars of the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) observe backscatter from ionospheric field‐aligned plasma irregularities and features on the Earth's surface out to ranges of several thousand kilometers via over‐the‐horizon propagation of transmitted radio waves. Interferometric techniques can be applied to the received signals at the primary and secondary antenna arrays to measure the vertical angle of arrival, or elevation angle, for more accurate geolocation of SuperDARN observations. However, the calibration of SuperDARN interferometer measurements remains challenging for several reasons, including a 2π phase ambiguity when solving for the time delay correction factor needed to account for differences in the electrical path lengths between signals received at the two antenna arrays. We present a new technique using multi‐frequency ionospheric and ground backscatter observations for the calibration of SuperDARN interferometer data, and demonstrate its application to both historical and recent data. This paper presents triangular core fiber for single-mode operation. The fiber supports single mode at a wavelength of 1550-nm, and it has an extremely large mode area of 2000 μm². With peak power of 85.4-kW at 1550 nm wavelength, fiber design demonstrates undistorted delivery of 100 fs laser pulses. We have used Transfer matrix method to analyse the fiber. The splitstep Fourier method has been used to solve the non-linear Schrodinger equation. Raman's response and self-steepening have also been taken in to account. In this paper, we report the numerical demonstration of propagation of 100-fs pulse with peak power of 85.4-kW at 1550-nm wavelength through 2.5 m long fiber. This paper investigates the impact of a powerful gamma ray burst (GRB) that occurred on 9 October 2022, on the Earth's environment using a very low frequency receiver (VLF) to probe the lower ionospheric region (the D region). In addition to the VLF data analysis, we employ numerical simulation through the Long Wavelength Propagation Capability code (LWPC) to derive the increase in the D− region electron density. Our results revealed discernible perturbations in amplitude and phase across all transmitter paths (NAA, DHO, ICV, and NSC) to the Algiers receiver persisting for 40 min. At the maximum of the signal perturbation, the LWPC simulation results showed a decrease in the mean new reference height h′ from 74 to 65.71 km, along with an increase in the sharpness factor β from 0.3 to 0.4875 km−1. Under these new conditions, the electron density increased from its ambient value (216.10 cm−3) to 33.7 103 cm−3. As they travel freely in the space, these phenomena can cause strong disturbances in the Earth's environment. In 9 October 2022, a powerful burst of gamma rays was recorded by many satellites in the near Earth space. This radiation burst was responsible of the ionospheric disturbance resulting in a modification of the propagation conditions of the radio waves. The intensity of the disturbance as well as its spatial extent can be determined through the analysis of different radio signals propagation and the level of the ionization increases. These results give us insight about the coupling between the gamma rays and the ionized layer of the Earth atmosphere. During experiments on the modification of the high-latitude ionosphere by high-power HF radio waves of ordinary or extraordinary polarization of the EISCAT/Heating facility (Tromsø, Norway) in 2013, 2016, and 2019, Doppler measurements of diagnostic HF radio signals over long radio paths were carried out by the bistatic scatter method. We studied characteristics of Doppler frequency variations in bistatic scattered radio signals, using the experimental results obtained along radio paths of different lengths (up to ~8500 km) and orientation. We examined numerical dependences of the Doppler frequency variations in a radio signal on the azimuth of the wave vector of a radio wave incident onto an artificially disturbed region, on the bistatic scattering angle, and on the azimuthal direction of irregularity motion in an artificially disturbed region of the ionosphere. From simultaneous measurements of the Doppler frequency fD of the radio signal along two diagnostic radio paths, we numerically estimated the velocity vector of irregularities in the artificially disturbed region of the ionosphere. The total vector velocity of artificial ionospheric irregularities can be calculated from measurements of the Doppler frequency shift along several long diagnostic radio paths after preliminary analysis of experimental observations with the results of trajectory modeling of diagnostic HF radio signals.

We present a scheme for modeling HF radio signal characteristics along paths of different lengths, which is based on the waveguide approach — the normal mode method. We use a representation of the recorded signal field in the form of Green function products of the angular operator, excitation coefficients, and reception coefficients of individual normal modes. Algorithms have been developed for calculating distance-frequency, frequency-angular, and amplitude characteristics of signals in large spatial regions through analysis and numerical summation of normal mode series. We have implemented a complex algorithm for simulating propagation conditions of HF radio signals, which includes a medium model, algorithms for calculating signal characteristics, and operational diagnostics of radio channel. We have compared the results of the HF signal propagation characteristic modeling and the experimental oblique sounding data obtained along paths of different lengths and orientation. To analyze experimental ionograms, determine the maximum usable frequencies for propagation modes along radio paths, we employ the method of automatic processing and interpretation of oblique sounding ionograms.

The paper presents a method of interpreting data on oblique ionosphere sounding (OS) with a continuous chirp signal. Hybrid algorithms for automatic interpretation of ionograms by selected points with significant amplitude obtained during secondary data processing for various heliogeophysical conditions have been developed and implemented. For the conditions of the two-layer ionosphere, an interpretation method has been worked out which involves analyzing histograms for the distribution of points with significant amplitude, which fall into a model mask constructed from the results of modeling of the distance-frequency characteristic for propagation when it moves over the ionogram. For the multilayer ionosphere, the interpretation is based on the study of the ionogram amplitude relief. The algorithms for extracting tracks of signals reflected from sporadic layers are examined separately. We report the results of interpretation of ionograms obtained on the network of chirp sounding radio paths in the northeastern region of Russia.

Gravity waves (GW) transport momentum flux (MF) and energy across the lower, middle and upper atmosphere. Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) radio occultation (RO) is one of the measuring techniques used onboard satellites to provide vertical temperature profiles with global and permanent coverage. These retrievals may be applied in the study of GW. Most of the analysis methods provide absolute GWMF but are missing its net direction. This happens because the procedures can deduce the orientation but not the propagation sign of GW and hence the full direction of MF. We apply here a method that allows the net calculation with four close in space and time RO soundings (quartets). We use about 10,000 daily retrievals from 1 March 2022 to 28 February 2023 to study the seasonal and latitudinal characteristics of net GWMF in the height interval from 20 to 35 km. About 600 quartets were found. The calculated zonal MF and drag exhibited negative minima at middle and high latitudes during winter in the Southern Hemisphere. This well‐known characteristic is usually mainly assigned to orographic sources. A similar intensity in zonal MF and drag is found during the same season at low latitudes. Meridional components are generally less significant. Besides finding the correct sign of the GWMF and the corresponding forcing on the mean flow, the quartets method also allows the determination of the horizontal and vertical wavelengths, the amplitude and sign of the vertical wave phase velocity and the intrinsic frequencies. The global statistics of these parameters are shown and each one exhibits a similar distribution shape across latitude bands. Large differences in the frequency of cases in vertical phase velocity sign appear only at low and high positive latitudes. The most even distribution of GW intrinsic frequency is found at low latitudes. We estimate that absolute MF calculations by methods assuming only upward GW propagation may produce a bias not larger than 40%. The increase of satellite measuring devices achieved in the last years due to the release of new missions led to a high spatial and temporal density of profiles that may allow the attainment of net GWMF climatologies over a seasonal time scale and about 4,000 km latitude bands but this performance may be even improved if the amount of retrievals continues to rise. We use retrievals from 1 March 2022 to 28 February 2023 to globally study the seasonal and latitudinal characteristics of GW in the height interval from 20 to 35 km over 1 year. About 600 quartets were found. Some well‐known GW characteristic are inferred from the calculations and some new results are suggested. The increase of RO satellites in the last years led to the existence of a significant amount of profiles that provided accurate and detailed information of GW, whereas further improvements may be obtained if the number of soundings continues to rise. Sporadic E (Es) layers are thin enhanced ionization patches. The electron density of Es layer is very high, up to 100 times that of the regular E layer. Therefore, Es layer has a significant effect on radio wave propagation. The formation mechanisms of Es layers is very complicated, so it needs multi-observations and simulations research. Combined observations using an ionosonde, very high frequency (VHF) coherent backscatter radar, VHF broadband backscatter radar, and meteor radar were performed. The height and irregular structure of mid-latitude Es layers observed by ionosonde, VHF coherent backscatter radar and VHF broadband backscatter radar were compared with the zonal and meridional winds observed by meteor radar, the role of wind shear on the formation of Es layer was confirmed, and examples were also found where wind shear theory could not explain and apply to the formation of Es layer. We simulated the formation of Es layers based on wind shear theory. The results of simulations and observations revealed other potential role for Es layer formation besides wind shear. By comparing the height of turbopause with that of Es layer, it was found that the variation of the altitudes of turbopause and Es layer was consistent over different latitude stations, and the effect of the turbopause on the formation of Es layer was proposed. The combined effects of eddy diffusion below and molecular ion collision above turbopause can prevent metal ions from drifting downward and promote their convergence to form thin plasma layers at the turbopause height. The turbopause accumulation effect is considered as a potentially important mechanism for the formation of Es layers besides wind shear theory. This paper elucidates the importance of creating backup communication channels in emergencies when access to cellular and satellite communication systems can be limited. The purpose of the study is to substantiate the use of LoRaWAN technology as a basis for building reliable backup communication facilities. A block diagram of the device has been proposed, which is used as an example for modeling the autonomy time of the device. It is shown that, depending on the mode of operation, this time ranges from 150 to 900 days. To estimate the radio accessibility zone of the device, the maximum transmission range was modeled using various models of radio wave propagation. The results of the investigations have shown that the developed emergency communication system based on the LoRaWAN protocol is effective and superior to other wireless communication technologies under certain conditions. Radio waves are significant for operating in an underground tunnel or a cave, such as two-way radio systems or emergency communication during rescue operations. Most applications used in the tunnels require wired connections because of the high attenuation of the wireless propagation. In particular, the attenuation in caves is higher than in tunnels because of the non-uniform nature of the walls. Therefore, this paper presents a study of the radio wave propagation within a cave. The experiment covers the low-frequency (LF) to ultra-high frequency (UHF) bands that aim to analyze the attenuation and behavior of waves in caves. Study results show that the low frequency and medium frequency (MF) bands can penetrate cave walls due to the deeper skin depth. At the same time, higher frequencies perform well in line-of-sight (LOS) propagation over short distances, albeit encountering significant attenuation in non-uniform cave environments. The skin depth condition obtained in the propagation result led to the Through-the-Earth (TTE) experiment by making two hand-made transceivers in the beginning band of MF at 350 kHz for transmitting and receiving waves between the mountain surface and the cave passage directly through the rock layer. The results of the TTE experiment show that the transceivers can transmit to 571 meters with a received power of -85.0 dBm before encountering an obstacle that makes it impossible to continue. Finally, the results are significant for developing the application of radio frequency within caves or tunnels and improving the application of the TTE technique with more versatility and efficiency. In this paper, we study the ionization‐recombination processes in the lower ionosphere during solar flares of various classes in June 2014 and September 2017. For the first time, ionization and recombination rates of the ionospheric D‐region were estimated using the experimental data on variations in the amplitude and phase characteristics of very low frequencies (VLF) signals and two‐channel data from the GOES satellite (0.05–0.4 nm and 0.1–0.8 nm). The empirical two‐parameter Wait‐Ferguson model was used to calculate temporal changes in the electron concentration Ne during solar flares of different classes. GOES satellite data and black body model were used to estimate the X‐ray fluxes in the wavelength spectral range λ ≤ 0.3 nm. Joint analysis of the temporal evolution of the Ne vertical profile in the lower ionosphere and X‐ray fluxes in different wavelength ranges was carried out. As a result, the values of the ionization and recombination rate coefficients were obtained, and the spectral ranges of radiation that have the greatest impact on Ne at given heights were determined. Calculated ionization and recombination rate coefficients and ranges were successfully verified using VLF data during different solar flares. The results obtained in this work can be used in future studies for a more accurate assessment of the response of lower ionosphere to solar flares of various classes. In this paper, the propagation of electromagnetic rays in a tropospheric waveguide and spatial processing using digital antenna arrays are studied. The beam traveling through the layers of the atmosphere depends on the refractive index and its vertical change. In this regard, conditions may arise when radio rays propagate in a waveguide manner at low altitudes. In this case, attenuation takes place, and the effect of multipath fading may also occur, when several rays reflected from different layers of the troposphere and with various spatial coordinates in elevation arrive at the receiver. It is proposed to apply digital antenna arrays to increase the range and reliability of radio communication through the tropospheric waveguide. Parabolic equations are utilized to estimate the path loses of radio waves of the centimeter wavelength. A ray-tracing algorithm via a tropospheric waveguide is used to estimate the mutual phases in the aperture of the receiving array. One of the major challenges in designing a wireless indoor–outdoor communication network operating in tunnels and long corridors is to identify the optimal location of the outside station for attaining a proper coverage. It is required to formulate a combined model, describing the propagation along the tunnel and the resulting diffracted outdoor pattern from its exit. An integrated model enables estimations of the radiation patterns at the rectangular tunnel exit, as well as in the free space outside of the tunnel. The tunnel propagation model is based on a ray-tracing image model, while the free-space diffraction model is based on applying the far-field Fraunhofer diffraction equation. The model predictions of sensing the radiation intensity at the tunnel end and at a plane located at a distance ahead were compared with experimental data obtained using a down-scaled tunnel model and shorter radiation wavelength correspondingly. This down-scaling enabled detailed measurements of the radiation patterns at the tunnel exit and at the far field. The experimental measurements for the scaled tunnel case fit the theoretical model predictions. The presented model accurately described the multi-path effects emerging from inside the tunnel and the resulting outdoor diffracted pattern at a distance from the tunnel exit. In this paper, aiming at the spectrum coexistence scenario between non-geostationary satellite orbit (NGSO) and geostationary satellite orbit (GSO) satellite systems, the NGSO network, a secondary system, reuses the spectrum resources of the GSO primary system through spectrum sensing and sharing technology. Combined with the influence of factors such as the radio wave propagation model and channel characteristics of the sensing links, as well as the difference of channel environment between sensing nodes, a weighted cooperative spectrum sensing strategy named optimal fusion decision for time-invariant channel link (OFD-TIC) method was proposed for NGSO–GSO downlink sensing communication. The OFD-TIC method is designed to minimize the global error detection probability while considering the constraints of spectrum conflict probability and false alarm probability. To achieve this, OFD-TIC method transforms the optimization problem into a Lagrange function and utilizes Newton's iterative method to obtain the weights of sensing node and the parameter thresholds for fusion decision. In the six different spectrum sensing scenarios constructed using satellite network data registered by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the performance evaluation of the proposed OFD-TIC method is carried out and the simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms existing typical algorithms. Under the same signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) and sampling number, the OFD-TIC strategy achieves a higher global detection probability than others. Large‐scale ionospheric gradients associated with the solar terminator can deflect high frequency (HF) radio waves to off‐great circle paths during the morning and evening, negatively impacting technologies reliant on HF radio wave propagation. For example, geolocation algorithms used by scientific and military over‐the‐horizon radars (OTHRs) generally assume on‐great circle propagation, and thus lateral deviations from the great‐circle path can lead to positioning errors. In this study, radio wave propagation is simulated via 3D numerical ray traces though an empirical, high‐latitude model ionosphere initialized for a variety of times of the day and year to explore and quantify high‐latitude off‐great circle propagation associated with the solar terminator. Analysis of these simulations show large scale east‐west ionospheric gradients due to the solar terminator can cause lateral deviations in north‐directed propagation paths exceeding 20° at sunrise and sunset depending on radio wave frequency, though the largest portion of received signal power tends to experience maximum deflections of 5°. An exploration of the dependence of propagation direction on deflection shows that propagation paths parallel to the solar terminator tend to experience the largest deflections. Since the solar terminator at high latitudes is at an angle with respect to north in the winter and summer, propagation paths oriented west or east of north can experience larger deflections than north oriented paths at sunrise and sunset during these times of year. Impacts of these diurnal deflections on the operation of OTHR and scientific radar are discussed, as well as possible strategies for mitigating them. The Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) consists of more than 30 monostatic high‐frequency (HF, 8–20 MHz) radars to study dynamic processes in the ionosphere. SuperDARN provides maps of global‐scale ionospheric plasma drift circulation from the mid‐latitudes to the poles. The conventional SuperDARN radars consecutively scan through 16 beam directions with a lower limit of 1 minute to sample the entire field of view. In this work, we use the advanced capabilities of the recently developed Borealis digital SuperDARN radar system. Combining a wide transmission beam with multiple narrow reception beams allows us to sample all conventional beam directions simultaneously and to speed up scanning of the entire field‐of‐view by up to 16 times without noticeable deterioration of the data quality. The wide‐beam emission also enabled the implementation of multistatic operations, where ionospheric scatter signals from one radar are received by other radars with overlapping viewing areas. These novel operations required the development of a new model to determine the geographic location of the source of the multistatic radar echoes. Our preliminary studies showed that, in comparison with the conventional monostatic operations, the multistatic operations provide a significant increase in geographic coverage, in some cases nearly doubling it. The multistatic data also provide additional velocity vector components, increasing the likelihood of reconstructing full plasma drift velocity vectors. The developed operational modes can be readily implemented at other fully digital SuperDARN radars. In this work, we use a recently developed digital SuperDARN radar system called Borealis to shorten the scan duration by an order of magnitude by illuminating the whole field of view with a broad transmitter beam and receiving radar returns from all 16 directions simultaneously using narrow receiver beams. We also implemented a technique to receive signals sent from one radar by other radars with overlapping viewing areas. This paper focuses on the characterization of radio propagation, and data communication in a marine environment. More specifically, we consider signal propagation when three different sub-gigahertz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) bands, i.e., 169 MHz, 434 MHz, and 868 MHz, are used. The main focus of the paper is to evaluate the path loss (PL), i.e., the power loss that a propagation radio wave would experience when communication occurs between a sail boat and a buoy. We describe the measurement results obtained performing three different radio power measurement campaigns, at the three different aforementioned ISM sub-gigahertz bands. We also want to correlate the radio propagation quality with the weather conditions present in the measurement areas. The obtained results show that higher distances are achieved by transmitting at lower frequencies, i.e., 169 MHz, and, on average, the propagation is directly dependent from the dew point index. The graph neural network (GNN) has shown outstanding performance in processing unstructured data. However, the downstream task performance of GNN strongly depends on the accuracy of data graph structural features and, as a type of deep learning (DL) model, the size of the training dataset is equally crucial to its performance. This paper is based on graph neural networks to predict and complete the target radio environment map (REM) through multiple complete REMs and sparse spectrum monitoring data in the target domain. Due to the complexity of radio wave propagation in space, it is difficult to accurately and explicitly construct the spatial graph structure of the spectral data. In response to the two above issues, we propose a multi-source domain adaptive of GNN for regression (GNN-MDAR) model, which includes two key modules: (1) graph structure alignment modules are used to capture and learn graph structure information shared by cross-domain radio propagation and extract reliable graph structure information for downstream reference signal receiving power (RSRP) prediction task; and (2) a spatial distribution matching module is used to reduce the feature distribution mismatch across spatial grids and improve the model's ability to remain domain invariant. Based on the measured REMs dataset, the comparative results of simulation experiments show that the GNN-MDAR outperforms the other four benchmark methods in accuracy when there is less RSRP label data in the target domain. This paper presents a 3D ray-tracing model using geometrical optics and the uniform theory of diffraction in radio channel characterizations of macrocellular environments. On the basis of the environmental information obtained from a digitized map, the model is effectively applied. A technique considering multiple reflections and diffractions through the ray path classification is utilized in this model. Ray paths belonging to each ray category are determined using different methods. The proposed model is justified (the prediction accuracy of the model is better than 6.5 dB) with measurement data for the two scenarios and can provide reliable theory as a basis for radio wave propagation prediction and network planning in urban macrocellular environments. Transionospheric radio signals might undergo random modulations of their amplitude and phase caused by scattering on irregular structures in the ionosphere. These scintillation phenomena are highly anisotropic, depend on local geomagnetic field configuaration and on the relative position of the signal receiver and scattering irregularity. We derive analytical expressions of anisotropic amplitude and phase scintillation indices using the model of a thin random phase screen. These results extend the classical derivations of [C. Rino, Radio Sci. 14 , 1135 (1979)] to a larger domain of applicability including very slant propagation links of the radio wave signals. The derived generalization is based on the assumption that the ionospheric scattering layer has a spherical symmetry as opposed to the original Rino's assumption of a plan-parallel ionospheric layer. The derived scintillation indices have the simpler analytical form, determine the regions of enhanced scintillation by taking into account the finite curvature of the Earth and of the ionospheric shell, and are divergence-free for large zenith angles of propagation links. High latitude ionospheric density structures such as polar cap patches and arcs are capable of deflecting high frequency (HF) radio waves to off‐great circle paths, and are likely detrimental to technologies dependent on HF radio propagation. In this study, nearly 2.5 years of 4.6–14.4 MHz data from a multi‐frequency HF radio link between Qaanaaq, Greenland and Alert, Canada are used to investigate high‐latitude off‐great circle propagation in the polar cap. After an example of HF radio propagation affected by polar cap patches is shown in detail, a statistical analysis of the occurrence and impacts of off‐great circle deflections in the polar cap is presented. Off‐great circle propagation is shown to be increasingly common with increasing frequency up to 11.1 MHz, such that averaged over 1 year, received 11.1 MHz signals experienced deflections >30° from the great circle direction 65.6% of the time. The occurrence of these deflections across the year is shown to be at a maximum in the winter, while occurrence across the day varies with season. Trends across both time of day and time of year for 11.1 and 14.4 MHz deflections are consistent with polar cap patch occurrence trends. Off‐great circle deflections are shown to be associated with increased time‐of‐flights, a larger range of positive and negative Doppler shifts, increased Doppler spreads, and lower signal‐to‐noise ratios. These results are discussed in the context of ionospheric phenomena in the polar cap, and implications for over‐the‐horizon radars operating at high latitudes. In this paper, radio transmissions sent between Qaanaaq, Greenland and Alert, Canada are studied in order to better understand how often HF radio waves are deflected by space weather at high latitudes, and what effect these deflections have on the signals themselves. After a brief example of what space weather deflections look like, transmissions sent over a whole year are studied to determine how deflections depend on radio frequency, time of day, and time of year. Then, the effects these deflections have on other signal properties is studied. It is found that deflections are very common at high latitudes, especially in the winter. Deflections tend to increase the travel time of signals, change their frequency, and reduce their signal strength. These results are shown to be connected to polar cap patches and arcs; which are common space weather phenomena near the poles. Numerical methods based on finite differences for solving the wave equation are prone to various errors, a challenge that also applies to the semi-discrete case of a recently proposed quantum algorithm that preserves continuous time while discretizing space into a quantum state vector. The inherent limitations of quantum processing, which affect the generality and extensibility of the quantum algorithm compared to classical numerical solvers, are offset by the logarithmic scaling of the number of qubits with the number of grid points. The higher grid density in combination with the higher-order approximation of the continuous Laplacian operator improves the numerical accuracy. In contrast to the Dirichlet boundary condition, however, the Neumann boundary condition in the quantum algorithm cannot exceed a second-order Laplacian approximation. Moreover, the anisotropy error is inherent to the lattice geometry. In this work, we propose a quantum wave equation solver on a hexagonal grid, which exhibits intrinsic grid dispersion comparable to that of a fourth-order accurate method on a rectangular grid and provides a quadratic improvement in the anisotropy measures. We show that the graph Laplacian on a hexagonal grid embedding the Neumann boundary condition is a bidirected graph. To make it suitable for use as a system Hamiltonian, a symmetrization and factorization based on the asymmetric adjacency matrix is proposed. Dispersion relations for quantum algorithms solving the wave equation on different lattices are derived and compared. The algorithms are analyzed as a limiting case of Yee’s finite-difference time-domain method in the context of electromagnetic wave propagation.

In this paper, the urban signal propagation characteristics based on the location of blind sources are investigated. To address the issue of blind electromagnetic radiation sources in complex urban environments, intelligent methods for propagation channel path classification, and model determination are brought forth based on field test data. The intelligent classification method distinguishes between the Line-of-Sight (LoS) path channel and a direct path, the LoS multipath channel with a direct path and other multiple paths, and the Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) multipath channel without a direct path from the source to the test point. The modeling aspect determines the model type to which the received signal belongs based on the statistical model derived from the tested data of a specific source. A validation measurement system was constructed for the FM broadcasting band, and validation campaigns were conducted in the city of Wuhan. The process and analysis of the data using this method demonstrate the accurate distinction of the different propagation path channels and models and involve the construction of a statistical model for the FM band in Wuhan's urban area. Mobile communication base stations have become ubiquitous with the popularization and development of mobile communication services. Although the Chinese government has designated a radio quiet zone (RQZ) specifically for Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), the 4G International Mobile Telecommunications (4G-IMT) system is still heavily used to meet the communication needs around the RQZ. To assess the Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) caused by 4G-IMT base stations on the performance of FAST, this paper employs the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) deterministic radio wave propagation prediction model. The interference of 4G-IMT base stations on FAST is evaluated based on relevant parameters, such as the frequency used by both FAST and the base station, in conjunction with the FAST threshold protection requirements. The results indicate that 47.73 % of the data exceed the radio astronomy protection threshold of FAST. In addition, a field experiment was conducted to verify the accuracy of the radio wave propagation prediction method used. The root-mean-square error between the predicted value and the measured value was found to be 6.94 dB, supporting the accuracy of the predicted results. The findings of this study can help suppress interference from mobile communication services around the RQZ of FAST and optimize the electromagnetic environment around FAST. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we propose the usage of an ensemble learning approach for predicting total electron content (TEC). The training data set spans from 2007 to 2016, while the testing data set is set to the year 2017. The model inputs in our study included Solar radio flux (F107), Solar Wind plasma speed, By, Bz, Dst, Ap, AE, day of year, universal time, 30‐day and 90‐day TEC averages. Specifically, eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), Gradient Boosting Decision Tree, and Decision Tree were utilized for 1‐hr TEC prediction at high‐ (80°W, 80°N), mid‐ (80°W, 40°N), and low‐ latitudes (80°W, 10°N). Results indicate that all three models performed well in predicting TEC, with a mean error of only approximately 0.6 TECU at high‐ and mid‐ latitudes and 1.13 TECU at low latitudes. At the same time, we compared the model with 1‐day Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics model during the period of magnetic storm from 25 August 2018 to 27 August 2018 and a quiet period from 13 December 2018 to 15 December 2018. In the magnetic storm period, Our model showed an average reduction of 1.83 TECU compared to BUAA model. During the quiet period, XGBoost exhibit an average error that is 1.14 TECU lower than that of BUAA model. Moreover, TEC prediction over the region between the 20°N–45°N and 70°E−120°E during geomagnetic storm has an error of 2.74 TECU, showing the stability and superiority of XGBoost. Overall, the ensemble learning approach exhibits its advantage in predicting TEC. In this paper, we propose a method for extracting the structure of an indoor environment using radar. When using the radar in an indoor environment, ghost targets are observed through the multipath propagation of radio waves. The presence of these ghost targets obstructs accurate mapping in the indoor environment, consequently hindering the extraction of the indoor environment. Therefore, we propose a deep learning-based method that uses image-to-image translation to extract the structure of the indoor environment by removing ghost targets from the indoor environment map. In this paper, the proposed method employs a conditional generative adversarial network (CGAN), which includes a U-Net-based generator and a patch-generative adversarial network-based discriminator. By repeating the process of determining whether the structure of the generated indoor environment is real or fake, CGAN ultimately returns a structure similar to the real environment. First, we generate a map of the indoor environment using radar, which includes ghost targets. Next, the structure of the indoor environment is extracted from the map using the proposed method. Then, we compare the proposed method, which is based on the structural similarity index and structural content, with the k-nearest neighbors algorithm, Hough transform, and density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise-based environment extraction method. When comparing the methods, our proposed method offers the advantage of extracting a more accurate environment without requiring parameter adjustments, even when the environment is changed. Numerical modeling of primary cosmic ray protons' transport through the Earth's atmosphere was performed for the energy spectra of solar energetic particle events (SEPs). Several events in the last three solar cycles were considered. A comparative analysis of the characteristics of coronal mass ejections and primary proton fluxes was carried out. The main results were quantitative estimates of the calculated atmospheric ionization count rate for a wide range of altitudes (from sea level up to 98 km). The difference in the influence of solar protons on the Earth's atmosphere is considered for seven SEPs divided into three groups with similar solar sources (X-flare magnitude and coordinates) but with different characteristics of accelerated particle fluxes. Radio wave propagation modelling in railway environments is of fundamental importance in designing reliable train communication systems. Parabolic equation (PE) methods have been widely applied to the modelling of wave propagation in tunnels due to their high computational efficiency and fidelity. The finite-difference parabolic equation (FDPE) and the split-step parabolic equation (SSPE) methods are two commonly used approaches to solve PE numerically. However, the relevant literature is still missing a comprehensive study of their performance, including the selection of parameters such as discretisation steps and the tradeoffs involved in terms of their accuracy and efficiency, especially as current wireless systems shift to high frequencies. In this study, a systematic analysis of the error and computational complexity of the FDPE and SSPE methods for radio wave propagation modelling in tunnels is provided. Guidelines for the choice of their parameters are provided, and their performance is demonstrated through both numerical examples and experimental measurements in actual tunnel cases. In this article, we investigate in different scenarios the feasibility of using massive multiple-input–multiple-output (mMIMO) with reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) to increase the throughput and coverage with high energy efficiency, considering sub-6 GHz, mmWave, and THz bands. With that objective, a centralized radio access network (C-RAN) suitable for beyond fifth-generation (B5G) systems is considered, where we integrate the base stations (BSs) with multiple RISs and IoT devices or user equipment. RISs with a large number of quasi-passive reflecting elements constitute a low-cost approach capable of shaping radio wave propagation and improving wireless connectivity. We consider a scenario where multiple RISs are combined with mMIMO in the uplink in order to provide connectivity to a smart city (with thousands of active low-power IoT devices), wirelessly, in the 3.6 GHz and 28 GHz bands. We also address a scenario where RISs are adopted with mMIMO in the downlink so as to offer connectivity to a stadium with a pitch, (and thousands of active users' equipment) in the 28 GHz band. Finally, we also studied the connectivity at 100 GHz of a factory in which several RIS panels, replacing most of the BSs equipped with mMIMO, assure improved throughput and coverage. We concluded that RISs are capable of improving the performance in any of these analyzed scenarios at the different frequency bands, justifying that they are a key enabling technology for 6G. Vertical radio refractivity gradients are essential for monitoring propagation conditions when designing and planning terrestrial radio links for communications in the lower atmosphere. Average data gathered from meteorological factors such as temperature, pressure, and relative humidity was used from 1980 to 2020 n this study. This study focuses on the vertical gradient of radio refractivity within the lower atmospheric layer, investigating its influence on factors like signal propagation, route clearance, and line-of-sight communication. The analysis encompasses three cities - Abuja, Makurdi, and Jos. In Figure 2 monthly average changes in the refractivity gradient are presented for Abuja. In addition, the seasonal radio refractivity gradient shows mean values of -110.000N/km for Abuja which shows that the refractivity condition is Super-Refraction, -77.553N/km for Jos which shows that the refractivity condition is Normal-Refraction and - 97.209N/km for Makurdi which shows that the refractivity condition is Normal-Refraction respectively. Higher gradient values, G1, G2, and G3 were observed during the dry season (December-February) which could be attributed to dry air and steeper refractivity gradients. In contrast, lower gradient values were observed during the wet season (June-October) due to increased atmospheric moisture. Similarly, measured vertical radio refractivity gradient data, G1 N/km, G2 N/km, and G3 N/km for Jos displayed consistent fluctuations throughout the year. The Higher negative values during the wet season suggest pronounced variations in the refractive index, affecting radio wave propagation. Parabolic equations (PE) are commonly employed for calculating the spatial propagation loss of wireless signals. The initial field is a crucial factor. To investigate the impact of construction accuracy on the calculation of radio wave propagation loss, we selected the half-wave dipole antenna and its Gaussian approximation to examine the influence of wide-angle PE modeling. We analyzed the disparities between the actual antenna pattern and the Gaussian beam approximation, as well as the discrepancies in the corresponding initial field and the calculation of radio wave propagation loss in PE modeling. The simulation results indicate that the error of the Gaussian approximation increases as the angle of departure from the antenna main beam increases, with a relative error of approximately 30% in the initial field. A comparison between the experimental test of the broadcast signal and the simulation calculation reveals that the model based on the actual antenna aligns more closely with the measured value on a flat underlying surface. However, in mountainous areas with significant fluctuations, the simulation results are consistent with each other and higher than the measured value. The inversion results obtained through the particle swarm optimization algorithm demonstrate that the model based on the actual antenna exhibits superior inversion accuracy for the tropospheric atmospheric duct structure. This article discusses several aspects related to modeling the impact of offshore wind farms on maritime radar systems operating in the X and S bands. The first part of the paper focuses on theoretical models and analyses, taking into account radio shadowing and false radar echoes. Additionally, the issue of spatial modeling of wind turbines, with diffraction phenomena considered, is reviewed with the help of suitable propagation models. By relaying on a software-based implementation of the proposed model, the authors carried out a detailed simulation of the impact of wind turbines on radar systems operating in the X and S bands. Nowadays, wireless communications are ubiquitously available. However, as pervasive as this technology is, there are distinct situations, such as during substantial public events, catastrophic disasters, or unexpected malfunctions of base stations (BSs), where the reliability of these communications might be jeopardized. Such scenarios highlight the vulnerabilities inherent in our current infrastructure. As a result, there is growing interest in establishing temporary networks that offer high-capacity communications and can adaptively shift service locations. To address this gap, this paper investigates the promising avenue of merging two powerful technologies: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and millimeter-wave (mmWave) transmissions. UAVs, with their ability to be operated remotely and to take flight without being constrained by terrestrial limitations, present a compelling case for being the cellular BSs of the future. When integrated with the high-speed data transfer capabilities of mmWave technology, the potential is boundless. We embark on a hands-on approach to provide a tangible foundation for our hypothesis. We carry out comprehensive experiments using an actual UAV equipped with an mmWave device. Our main objective is to meticulously study its radio wave propagation attributes when the UAVs are in flight mode. The insights gleaned from this hands-on experimentation are profound. We contrast our experimental findings with a rigorous numerical analysis to refine our understanding. The random amplitude and phase fluctuations observed in trans‐ionospheric radio signals are caused by the presence of electron density irregularities in the ionosphere. Ground‐based measurements of radio wave signals provide information about the medium through which these signals propagate. The Canadian High Arctic Ionospheric Network (CHAIN) Global Position System (GPS) receivers record radio signals emitted by the GPS satellites, enabling the study of their spectral characteristics. This study presents examples of phase spectra with two power‐law components. These components exhibit steeper spectral slopes at higher frequencies and shallower ones at lower frequencies. To be more specific, we conducted a spectral characterization of sixty one (61) events recorded by the CHAIN Churchill GPS receiver, which is located in the auroral oval. When fluctuations above the background level are only observed in the phase, the spectra tend to be systematically steeper. Conversely, the power increase in higher frequency fluctuations accompanying amplitude scintillation tends to result in shallower spectra. A basic yet powerful model of radio wave propagation through a turbulent ionosphere, characterized by a power law electron density spectrum, can help to explain the two power laws observed in the scintillation events presented in this study by identifying the role played by small‐scale ionospheric irregularities in diffraction. We present a modified method of HF radio channel modeling based on a waveguide approach. The waveguide approach represents the electromagnetic field of radiation inside the Earth—ionosphere waveguide as an eigenfunction series of a radial boundary problem with impedance conditions on the Earth surface and radiation conditions at infinity. The transfer function of the radio channel is represented as a series of products of angular-operator Green functions, excitation coefficients, and coefficients for receiving individual normal modes. We have obtained a solution of the boundary value problem of determining the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the radial operator. The solution can be applied to the frequency range below the ionospheric F-layer critical frequency. We examine algorithms for calculating distance-frequency, frequency-angular, and amplitude characteristics of signals by analyzing and numerically summarizing the series in terms of strongly damped normal modes.

Internet of things (IoT), to Arctic Ocean areas using Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites for communication to and from sensor units on the sea, has become increasingly important. It is challenging to close the link budget from a buoy on sea to a LEO satellite due to restrictions on the availability of power in such installations. Phenomena as scattering from the sea surface and small-scale fading, ionospheric scintillations, diffraction loss at low elevation angles, and power availability in small LEO satellites and models for analysis are described. It is of great importance to have a radio wave propagation model that accurately predicts path loss between an installation on the sea and a LEO satellite taking all loss mechanisms into account. In this paper, a path-loss model for satellite to buoy communications over the sea is described. In this model, maritime propagation phenomena in the radio link include free space loss, scintillation loss caused by the ionosphere, diffraction loss at low elevation angle, and scattering at the sea surface depending on the wave height and small-scale fading. Furthermore, a buoy on the sea surface with strong angular movement will cause a varying receive signal level depending on the antenna diagram. These phenomena are assessed. A link budget for the frequencies 433, 868, and 3,400 MHz is calculated for a LEO satellite at a height of 800 km. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mathematical modeling of the propagation of radio waves in the decameter range between the transmitter and receiver on inclined paths during the formation of traveling ionospheric disturbances (TID) has been carried out. The features of propagation when moving TIDs in both horizontal and vertical directions were studied. The characteristics of the radio channel: the group delay time of the radio signal, the Doppler frequency shift, the dependence of the ray exit angles on the position of the TID center at various frequencies and types of polarization of electromagnetic waves are calculated. It has been established that when the inhomogeneity moves horizontally, the center of the Doppler shift curve (zero value) move depending on the type of polarization of the radiation. The shape of the Doppler shift curve changes from a sinusoidal shape to a sawtooth with increasing frequency, the group delay curve has a minimum in the region of influence of the TID, and the region of influence of the disturbance itself significantly exceeds its characteristic size.
