Abstract

In this paper, we study the approximate controllability of a system governed by an evolution problem known as the sloshing problem. This problem involves a spatial, nonlocal differential operator inherent in the dynamics of a two-dimensional, incompressible, non-viscous fluid within a confined domain. Our work establishes unique continuation results that enable the application of source control localized in an interior domain, allowing the aforementioned controllability.

Abstract

The relationship between the shape of a molecule and its chemical reactivity is a central tenet in chemistry. However, the influence of the molecular geometry on reactivity can be subtle and result from several opposing effects. Using a novel crossed-molecular-beam experiment in which individual rotational quantum states of specific conformers of a molecule are separated, we study the chemi-ionization reaction of hydroquinone with metastable neon atoms. We show that collision-induced alignment of the reaction partners caused by geometry-dependent long-range forces crucially influences reaction pathways for distinct conformers which is, however, countered by molecular rotation. We demonstrate how the interplay between molecular geometry, chemical steering forces and rotational dynamics govern the outcome of reactions and illustrate the capability of advanced molecule-control techniques to unravel these effects., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 1 (EUSO-SPB1) was launched in 2017 April from Wanaka, New Zealand. The plan of this mission of opportunity on a NASA super pressure balloon test flight was to circle the southern hemisphere. The primary scientific goal was to make the first observations of ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray extensive air showers (EASs) by looking down on the atmosphere with an ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence telescope from suborbital altitude (33~km). After 12~days and 4~hours aloft, the flight was terminated prematurely in the Pacific Ocean. Before the flight, the instrument was tested extensively in the West Desert of Utah, USA, with UV point sources and lasers. The test results indicated that the instrument had sensitivity to EASs of approximately 3 EeV. Simulations of the telescope system, telescope on time, and realized flight trajectory predicted an observation of about 1 event assuming clear sky conditions. The effects of high clouds were estimated to reduce this value by approximately a factor of 2. A manual search and a machine-learning-based search did not find any EAS signals in these data. Abstract

JEM--EUSO is an international program for the development of space-based Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray observatories. The program consists of a series of missions which are either under development or in the data analysis phase. All instruments are based on a wide-field-of-view telescope, which operates in the near-UV range, designed to detect the fluorescence light emitted by extensive air showers in the atmosphere. We describe the simulation software ESAFin the framework of the JEM--EUSO program and explain the physical assumptions used. We present here the implementation of the JEM--EUSO, POEMMA, K--EUSO, TUS, Mini--EUSO, EUSO--SPB1 and EUSO--TA configurations in ESAF. For the first time ESAF simulation outputs are compared with experimental data.

6. Spectroscopic constants from atomic properties: a machine learning approach

Abstract

We present a machine-learning approach toward predicting spectroscopic constants based on atomic properties. After collecting spectroscopic information on diatomics and generating an extensive database, we employ Gaussian process regression to identify the most efficient characterization of molecules to predict the equilibrium distance, vibrational harmonic frequency, and dissociation energy. As a result, we show that it is possible to predict the equilibrium distance with an absolute error of 0.04 {\AA} and vibrational harmonic frequency with an absolute error of 36 $\text{cm}^{-1}$, including only atomic properties. These results can be improved by including prior information on molecular properties leading to an absolute error of 0.02 {\AA} and 28 $\text{cm}^{-1}$ for the equilibrium distance and vibrational harmonic frequency, respectively. In contrast, the dissociation energy is predicted with an absolute error $\lesssim 0.4$ eV. Alongside these results, we prove that it is possible to predict spectroscopic constants of homonuclear molecules from the atomic and molecular properties of heteronuclear. Finally, based on our results, we present a new way to classify diatomic molecules beyond chemical bond properties.

8. Statistical adiabatic channel model for termolecular reactions.

Abstract

In this work, we present a statistical adiabatic channel model for termolecular reactions, A + B + C → Products. Our approach relies on hyperspherical coordinates, where the adiabatic channels are readily defined in the hyper-radius after averaging the hyperangular degrees of freedom. In this way, we find a general expression for termolecular rate constants. We focus on ion-neutral association reactions to test our approach's accuracy and predictive power, finding a good agreement between theory and experiment, especially in those reactions' temperature dependence. 9. Trap-assisted complexes in cold atom-ion collisions

Abstract

We theoretically investigate the trap-assisted formation of complexes in atom-ion collisions and their impact on the stability of the trapped ion. The time-dependent potential of the Paul trap facilitates the formation of temporary complexes by reducing the energy of the atom, which gets temporarily stuck in the atom-ion potential. As a result, those complexes significantly impact termolecular reactions leading to molecular ion formation via three-body recombination. We find that complex formation is more pronounced in systems with heavy atoms, but the mass has no influence on the lifetime of the transient state. Instead, the complex formation rate strongly depends on the amplitude of the ion's micromotion. We also show that complex formation persists even in the case of a time-independent harmonic trap. In this case, we find higher formation rates and longer lifetimes than the Paul trap, indicating that the atom-ion complex plays an essential role in atom-ion mixtures in optical traps., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

In this work, we explore the role of chemical reactions on the properties of buffer gas-cooled molecular beams. In particular, we focus on scenarios relevant to the formation of AlF and CaF via chemical reactions between the Ca and Al atoms ablated from a solid target in an atmosphere of a fluorine-containing gas, in this case, SF6 and NF3. Reactions are studied following an ab initio molecular dynamics approach, and the results are rationalized following a tree-shaped reaction model based on Bayesian inference. We find that NF3 reacts more efficiently with hot metal atoms to form monofluoride molecules than SF6. In addition, when using NF3, the reaction products have lower kinetic energy, requiring fewer collisions to thermalize with the cryogenic helium. Furthermore, we find that the reaction probability for AlF formation is much higher than for CaF across a broad range of temperatures.

Abstract

This work presents a direct three-body recombination approach of the sulfur recombination reaction, S + S + M → S2 + M, at temperatures between 100 and 500 K. Our calculations for M = Ar, based on a classical trajectory approach in hyperspherical coordinates, show excellent agreement with the experimental measurement at T = 298 K of Fair and Thrush [Trans. Faraday Soc. 65, 1208 (1969)]. Similarly, we find that the production of S2 strongly depends on the SAr product, the other possible reaction channel. Finally, using the classical threshold law, we check sulfur recombination with another third body, M = H2S, and find no significant change in the rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We consider the Boussinesq‐Peregrine (BP) system as described by Lannes [Lannes, D. (2013). The water waves problem: mathematical analysis and asymptotics (Vol. 188). American Mathematical Soc.], within the shallow water regime, and study the inverse problem of determining the time and space variations of the channel bottom profile, from measurements of the wave profile and its velocity on the free surface. A well‐posedness result within a Sobolev framework for (BP), considering a time dependent bottom, is presented. Then, the inverse problem is reformulated as a nonlinear PDE‐constrained optimization one. An existence result of the minimum, under constraints on the admissible set of bottoms, is presented. Moreover, an implementation of the gradient descent approach, via the adjoint method, is considered. For solving numerically both, the forward (BP) and its adjoint system, we derive a universal and low‐dissipation scheme, which contains non‐conservative products. The scheme is based on the FORCE‐ α$$ \alpha $$ method proposed in [Toro, E. F., Saggiorato, B., Tokareva, S., and Hidalgo, A. (2020). Low‐dissipation centred schemes for hyperbolic equations in conservative and non‐conservative form. Journal of Computational Physics, 416, 109545]. Finally, we implement this methodology to recover three different bottom profiles; a smooth bottom, a discontinuous one, and a continuous profile with a large gradient. Abstract

Long‐lived orogens are often characterized by basement blocks affected by polyphase thick‐skinned deformation. Deciphering these events is challenging due to the heterogeneous and complex structural histories resulting from the superposition of multiple deformation phases. For instance, the Central Cordillera of Colombia was shaped by multiple tectonic phases during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic, which have been poorly constrained in both space and time. To unravel the deformation history of this mountain belt, we conducted field mapping and applied a multi‐chronometric approach that included zircon and apatite U‐Pb dating of the igneous basement, epidote and titanite U‐Pb dating of structurally controlled mineralization events, K‐Ar dating of fault rock illite, and fission track and (U‐Th‐Sm)/He bedrock thermochronology of apatite and zircon. The results reveal six deformation events along two fault systems during the past 184 Myr. This deformation history started in the Jurassic with structurally controlled magmatism and ductile deformation; followed by brittle‐ductile and fluid‐assisted basin subsidence and inversion during the Cretaceous. Finally, the Cenozoic was characterized by brittle strike‐slip and compressional deformation. Our findings show the basement response to polyphase reworking, highlighting the prominent role of ancient upper‐plate discontinuities, magmatism, and fluids. Comedian Ángel Martín edits and presents the Informativo matinal para ahorrar tiempo (IMPAT), a daily two-minute audiovisual newscast distributed on major social networks, with a daily audience of around one million views. This format has generated a community of followers who expand its original content by creating mimetic sector-specific news programs. This study analyzes the thematic agenda and stylistic features of the IMPAT, as well as the news programs developed by its followers. The results show a predominance of soft news and non-news content, as well as the presence of narrative traits characteristic of infotainment. The followers expand the IMPAT by creating their own news programs, also focused on soft news and with similar styles. Thus, IMPAT stands out as an alternative newscast around which a unique informational fandom has been consolidated, with content generated by its users as news prodesigners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Spectroscopic studies of aluminum monofluoride (AlF) have revealed its highly favorable properties for direct laser cooling. All Q lines of the strong A1Π ← X1Σ+ transition around 227 nm are rotationally closed and thereby suitable for the main cooling cycle. The same holds for the narrow, spin-forbidden a3Π ← X1Σ+ transition around 367 nm, which has a recoil limit in the µK range. We here report on the spectroscopic characterization of the lowest rotational levels in the a3Π state of AlF for v = 0–8 using a jet-cooled, pulsed molecular beam. An accidental AC Stark shift is observed on the a3Π0, v = 4 ← X1Σ+, v = 4 band. By using time-delayed ionization for state-selective detection of the molecules in the metastable a3Π state at different points along the molecular beam, the radiative lifetime of the a3Π1, v = 0, J = 1 level is experimentally determined as τ = 1.89 ± 0.15 ms. A laser/radio frequency multiple resonance ionization scheme is employed to determine the hyperfine splittings in the a3Π1, v = 5 level. The experimentally derived hyperfine parameters are compared to the outcome of quantum chemistry calculations. A spectral line with a width of 1.27 kHz is recorded between hyperfine levels in the a3Π, v = 0 state. These measurements benchmark the electronic potential of the a3Π state and yield accurate values for the photon scattering rate and for the elements of the Franck–Condon matrix of the a3Π–X1Σ+ system. Abstract

Whilst being small and shallow, permanent ponds provide valuable habitats for a multitude of organisms as well as provide habitats for animals like aquatic insects and others, including many rare species. These ponds, which were often neglected in limnological studies, were the core of our joint project, the 3rd freshwater project - EUROPONDS in order to evaluate the often overlooked ecological ecosystem services provided by permanent ponds across Europe. As a part of this project, two Hungarian ponds were surveyed for a full year (2020/21). One of the project aims was to assess the freshwater macroinvertebrate assemblages by dip netting over the four annual seasons. Here, we present preliminary results examining the data on larval Odonata of two Hungarian ponds in relation to the physicochemical variables measured, as well as compare the results to a previous national survey. Altogether the examination of 24 waterbodies (22 from a national survey and two from the EUROPONDS project) was carried out in this study. All of the involved water bodies were clustered using a Ward analysis including the water physicochemical parameters into three groups, and then the dragonfly fauna was investigated within the groups found. Diversity metrics and the presence or absence of different species were also included and the results were compared between the different clusters. Herein, we aimed to assess differences between the three main clusters, identify key factors driving the presence of the studied species and the relationship between the diversity indexes and the physicochemical parameters influencing the Odonata communities in the studied ponds.
