Nitrous oxide (N2O) emission estimation derived from the application of synthetic fertilizers using default emission factors and in a homogeneous way throughout the country for the Inventories of Greenhouse Gases of Argentina do not reflect local productive characteristics and the regional differences. The objectives of this study were a) to disaggregate synthetic nitrogen (N) data by region, crop and weather, b) to analyze and synthesize the state of the art of research in Argentina about the development of local N2O emission factors (FE) for synthetic fertilizers application. For the first objective, a methodology was developed that consists of multiplying the average N dose applied per region by the area sown per crop. For the second, a compilation of scientific papers published in national and international journals was carried out. It was possible to disaggregate the N application data by district and crop by crossing different sources of information: 36.7% of N at country level is applied in the Province of Buenos Aires, 26.3% in Córdoba, 12% in Santa Fe and 7.3% in Entre Ríos. Corn (Zea mays L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) are the crops with the highest application of N (33.9 and 23.3% respectively). Concerning the state of the art of local research, we found 11 papers that allow us to propose FE for direct N2O emissions, and 15 that allow us to estimate volatilization or leaching fractions that result in indirect N2O emissions. The average values estimated and reported from the literature were 0.0124 kg N2O-N (kg N)-1(direct N2O emission factors), 0.081 kg N volatilized (kg N)-1(volatilization fraction) and 0.244 kg N (kg N)-1 (leaching fraction). Compared to the values used in the National Inventory, the difference is up to 25%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The following authors were omitted from the original version of this Data Descriptor: Markus Reichstein and Nicolas Vuichard. Both contributed to the code development and N. Vuichard contributed to the processing of the ERA-Interim data downscaling. Furthermore, the contribution of the co-author Frank Tiedemann was re-evaluated relative to the colleague Corinna Rebmann, both working at the same sites, and based on this re-evaluation a substitution in the co-author list is implemented (with Rebmann replacing Tiedemann). Finally, two affiliations were listed incorrectly and are corrected here (entries 190 and 193). The author list and affiliations have been amended to address these omissions in both the HTML and PDF versions.

11. Cover Crop Species Affect N2O Emissions at Hotspot Moments of Summer Crops.

- Abstract
The use of cover crops, combined with low N fertilization and no-tillage, reduces the environmental impacts of agriculture. Legume cover crops provide N to the agroecosystem and allow N fertilization to be reduced without losing productivity, but may also increase nitrous oxide (N
2 O) emissions. Our main objective was to evaluate the impact of using oats, vetch, and oats+vetch mixture as cover crops on N2 O emissions and summer crop yields in a maize-soybean rotation with low N fertilization to maize (32 kg N ha-1 ) under no-tillage. We also studied how the different cover crops affected soil variables related to N2 O emissions. For the treatments that included vetch (vetch and oats +vetch), plots without N fertilization were included to evaluate if N2 O emissions and crop yield were increased by low-rate N fertilization after a legume cover crop. We measured N2O emissions using static chambers in a long-term experiment located in the Argentine Pampas. We selected measurement periods in which high N2O fluxes were expected to evaluate the effect of the different cover crops during these hotspots. In the early stages of maize and soybean, the use of vetch as a cover crop increased N2O emissions compared with oats and a control without a cover crop. In those early stages, conditions for high N2O flux occurrence were promoted by the use of cover crops, as they increased soil moisture and, when vetch was the cover crop, nitrate content. Although the oats+vetch mixture reduced soil nitrate availability compared with vetch, this was not reflected lower N2 O emissions. The use of oats as a cover crop did reduce N2 O emissions compared with vetch and also decreased maize yields by 30.6%. The low-rate N fertilization in treatments that included vetch as a cover crop did not increase N2 O emissions or yield significantly. Our study demonstrates that in low-input cropping systems under no-tillage, the use of legume cover crops can favor yields and also increase N2 O emissions during the early stages of the following cash crop. Consequently, future work should explore mitigation strategies during this period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published
