The preparation of synthetic (Zr,U)SiO 4 solid solution is challenging, as the conventional high-temperature solid-state method limits the solubility of uranium (4 ± 1 mol%) in the orthosilicate phase due to its thermodynamic instability. However, these compounds are of great interest as a result of (Zr,U)SiO 4 solid solutions, with uranium contents exceeding this concentration, being observed as corium phases formed during nuclear accidents. It has been identified that hydrothermal synthesis pathways can be used for the formation of the metastable phase, such as USiO 4 . The investigation carried out in this study has indeed led to the confirmation of metastable (Zr,U)SiO 4 compounds with high uranium contents being formed. It was found that (Zr,U)SiO 4 forms a close-to-ideal solid solution with uranium loading of up to 60 mol% by means of hydrothermal treatment for 7 days at 250 °C, at pH = 3 and starting from an equimolar reactant concentration equal to 0.2 mol L -1 . A purification procedure was developed to obtain pure silicate compounds. After purification, these compounds were found to be stable up to 1000 °C under an inert atmosphere (argon). The characterisation methods used to explore the synthesis and thermal stability included powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopies, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).

The FurnaSEM microfurnace was installed in the chamber of a scanning electron microscope to carry out in situ experiments at high temperatures and test its limits. The microfurnace was used in combination with different types of detectors (Everhart-Thornley for the collection of secondary electrons in a high vacuum, gas secondary electron detector for the specific collection of secondary electrons in the presence of gas, and Karmen© detector for the collection of backscattered electrons at high temperature). Experiments carried out on various samples (metal alloys and ceramics) show that the microfurnace operates in both high-vacuum and low-vacuum modes. Temperature ramp rates during temperature cycles applied to the sample range from 1 to 120 °C/min (temperature rise) and 1 to 480 °C/min (controlled and natural cooling). The maximum temperature at which images were recorded up to 25 k × magnification was 1340 °C, with a residual air atmosphere of 120 Pa. The choice of a flat furnace with the sample placed directly above it has enabled innovative experiments to be carried out, such as low-voltage imaging (using a shorter working distance-up to 10 mm-than is possible with conventional furnaces), 3D imaging (by tilting the stage by up to 10°), and high-temperature backscattered electron imaging (using a dedicated detector)., (© 2024 Author(s). When conducting in situ experiments at high temperatures in a scanning electron microscope using microfurnaces, controlling the temperature of a sample of a few mm3 placed in the hot zone of the furnace can be a complex task. In most cases, the temperature of the sample is estimated by means of a thermocouple placed in the hot body of the furnace, and the assumption made is that the temperature of the furnace is the temperature of the sample. In this work, a detailed understanding of the thermal response of the sample placed in the hot zone of the furnace is proposed. Temperature differences due to contact resistance between the furnace surface and the sample, the nature of the sample, and the sample geometry are calculated with a numerical model and measured experimentally on a dedicated test bench. Three technical solutions (bonding, sandwiching, and mini-crucible) for limiting temperature differences between the furnace surface and sample are proposed and validated by numerical calculations and experimental measurements., (© 2024 Author(s). The development of a new heating system dedicated to in situ scanning electron microscope (SEM) experimentation at high temperatures is reported. This system, called FurnaSEM, is a compact microfurnace, enabling heat treatments up to 1300 °C. The choice of materials for the microfurnace is explained. The design of the microfurnace is optimized by iterations of numerical simulations, and the thermal characteristics of the microfurnace are calculated numerically. The numerical results obtained are compared with the thermal characteristics of a manufactured microfurnace, measured on a specially developed dedicated test bench. This test bench includes a working chamber simulating a SEM chamber equipped with a thermal camera. The results obtained during various qualification tests enabled us to determine the main technical characteristics of the FurnaSEM microfurnace: temperature profiles on the sample support surface, energy consumption at high temperatures, and the range of achievable thermal cycles., (© 2024 Author(s). Bauxite residues (BRs) are highly alkaline wastes generated during alumina production from bauxite ore. Billions of tons have been accumulating worldwide for more than 100 years, they are stored in various forms, and pose environmental and societal issues. At the same time, BRs are promising secondary sources for the production of critical metals including rare earth elements (REEs). However, knowledge on REE speciation is lacking, and is consequently an obstacle to the development of large-scale extraction process. This study analyses the influence of origin of the bauxite ore (lateritic or karstic), the storage conditions and storage time on the properties of ten BR samples, with a particular focus on the speciation of yttrium, which is used as a proxy to identify the behaviour of heavy REE. A multi-scale approach linked yttrium speciation and the origin of the bauxite ore whereas no major variation was observed as a function of storage conditions or ageing of the BRs. Yttrium is mainly found in the form of xenotime phosphate particles in BRs of lateritic origin, while in karstic BRs, the majority of yttrium is probably adsorbed or incorporated into other minerals including iron oxyhydroxide and hydroxyapatite minerals., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier B.V. Sintering is a very important process in materials science and technological applications. Despite breakthroughs in achieving optimized piezoelectric properties, fundamentals of K 0.5 Na 0.5 NbO 3 (KNN) sintering are not yet fully understood, facing densification versus grain growth competition. At present, microscale events during KNN sintering under reducing atmospheres are real-time monitored using a High Temperature-Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope. A two contacting KNN particles model satisfying the Kingery and Berg's bulk diffusion model is reported. Dynamic events like individual grain growth and grain elimination process are explored through a postanalysis of recorded image series. The diffusion coefficient for oxygen vacancies of 10 -8 cm 2 s -1 and average boundary mobility of 10 -9 cm 4 J -1 s -1 are reported for the KNN ceramics. Moreover, the local pore shrinkage is consistent with the Kingery and François's concept of pore stability except that pore curvatures are not all concave, convex or flat due to anisotropic grain-boundary energies. The global grain growth kinetics are described using parabolic and/or cubic laws. The effect of atmospheres and microstructure evolution on the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to the dielectric response using Rayleigh's law is also explored.
