Nanoscale oxides grown in c-silicon, implanted with low-energy (2 keV) H+ ions and fluences ranging from 1013 cm−2 to 1015 cm−2 by RF plasma immersion implantation (PII), have been investigated. The oxidation of the implanted Si layers proceeded in dry O2 at temperatures of 700 °C, 750 °C and 800 °C. The optical characterization of the formed Si/SiOx structures was conducted by electroreflectance (ER) and spectroscopic ellipsometric (SE) measurements. From the ER and SE spectra analysis, the characteristic energy bands of direct electron transitions in Si are elaborated. The stress in dependence on hydrogenation conditions is considered and related to the energy shifts of the Si interband transitions around 3.4 eV. Silicon oxides, grown on PII Si at a low H+ fluence, have a non-stoichiometric nature, as revealed by IR-SE spectra analysis, while with an increasing H+ fluence in the PII Si substrates and/or the subsequent oxidation temperature the stoichiometric Si-O4 units in the oxides become predominant. The development of surface morphology is studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging. Oxidation of the H+-implanted Si surface region flattens out the surface pits created on the Si surface by H+ implants. Based on the evaluation of the texture index and mean fractal dimension, the isotropic and self-similar character of the studied surfaces is emphasized.

The cultivation of lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) crop is dominated by its medicinal, food preservative, and cosmetic demands. The growing economy of the lemongrass market suggests the immense commercial potential of lemongrass and its essential oil. Nevertheless, the continuous increase of the saline regime threatens the growth and productivity of most of the plant life worldwide. In this regard, the present experiment explores the salt sensitiveness of the lemongrass crop against five different levels of salt stress. Metabolomic analyses suggest that lemongrass plants can effectively tolerate a salt concentration of up to 80 mM and retain most of their growth and productivity. However, extreme NaCl concentrations (≥160 mM) inflicted significant (α = 0.05) damage to the plant physiology and exhausted the lemongrass antioxidative defence system. Therefore, the highest NaCl concentration (240 mM) minimised plant height, chlorophyll fluorescence, and essential oil production by up to 50, 27, and 45%. The overall data along with the salt implications on photosynthetic machinery and ROS metabolism suggest that lemongrass can be considered a moderately sensitive crop to salt stress. The study, sensu lato, can be used in reclaiming moderately saline lands with lemongrass cultivation converting such lands from economic liability to economic asset.

Undoped and Zn-doped ITO (ITO:Zn) multifunctional thin films were successfully synthesized using the sol–gel and dipping method on three different types of substrates (glass, SiO2/glass, and Si). The effect of Zn doping on the optoelectronic, microstructural, and gas-sensing properties of the films was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), Raman spectroscopy, Hall effect measurements (HE), and gas testing. The results showed that the optical constants, the transmission, and the carrier numbers were correlated with the substrate type and with the microstructure and the thickness of the films. The Raman study showed the formation of ITO films and the incorporation of Zn in the doped film (ITO:Zn), which was confirmed by EDX analysis. The potential use of the multifunctional sol–gel ITO and ITO:Zn thin films was proven for TCO applications or gas-sensing experiments toward CO2. The Nyquist plots and equivalent circuit for fitting the experimental data were provided. The best electrical response of the sensor in CO2 atmosphere was found at 150 °C, with activation energy of around 0.31 eV.

Abstract Key message Seven European beech provenances differing largely in growth performance were grown at two common garden sites in Germany and Slovakia. The intra-specific variability of most traits was explained more by phenotypic plasticity than inter-provenance variability, and efficiency-related traits showed a higher phenotypic plasticity than safety-related traits. Context To maintain climate-resilient future forests, replicated common-garden experiments are suited for developing assisted migration strategies for key tree species. Aims We analysed the magnitude of inter-provenance variability and phenotypic plasticity for 12 functional traits of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and analysed whether the climate at the place of origin left an imprint. Moreover, we asked whether growth is unrelated to xylem safety and to what extent the foliar, xylem and growth-related traits are coordinated. Methods Terminal branches were collected from 19-year-old and 22-year-old trees of seven European beech provenances planted at two common garden sites in Germany and Slovakia, respectively. Three hydraulic, three wood anatomical and four foliar traits were measured and related to two growth-related variables. Results At the two sites, the same pair of provenances showed the highest and lowest growth. Nevertheless, a high degree of phenotypic plasticity was observed, as all traits differed significantly between sites after accounting for provenance effects, with hydraulic safety-related traits showing the lowest and efficiency-related traits the highest plasticity. There was no evidence for inter-provenance variability in xylem embolism resistance (P 50) or the foliar carbon isotope signature (δ13C), a proxy for intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE), and both were unrelated to growth. P 50 was positively correlated with the lumen-to-sapwood area ratio and vessel density. Conclusions Because of the lacking trade-off between embolism resistance and growth, highly productive provenances can be selected without reducing the drought tolerance of the branch xylem. However, as xylem safety is only one element of a trees’ drought response, it may be beneficial to select provenances with other more conservative drought adaptations such as smaller vessel lumen areas for increasing xylem safety and small supported total leaf areas for reduction of total transpiration.

We developed and applied a new calibration method to make more accurate measurements with our multi-color ellipsometric mapping tool made from cheap parts. Ellipsometry is an optical technique that measures the relative change in the polarization state of the measurement beam induced by reflection from or transmission through a sample. During conventional ellipsometric measurement, the data collection is relatively slow and measures one spot at a time, so mapping needs a long time compared with our new optical mapping equipment made by an ordinary color LED monitor and a polarization-sensitive camera. The angle of incidence and the incident polarization state is varied point by point, so a special optical calibration method is needed. Three SiO2 samples with different thicknesses were used for the point-by-point determination of the angle of incidence and rho (ρ) corrections. After the calibration, another SiO2 sample was measured and analyzed using the calibrated corrections; further, this sample was independently measured using a conventional spectroscopic ellipsometer. The difference between the two measured thickness maps is less than 1 nm. Our optical mapping tool made from cheap parts is faster and covers wider area samples relative to conventional ellipsometers, and these correction enhancements further demonstrate its performance.

Color etching is a useful corrosive process, widely applied in metallography to study the microstructure of metals. To prove the existence of the previously hypothesized steady-state etching rate, in-situ investigations were performed with spectroscopic ellipsometry during the color etching of ferritic materials. Kinetic information regarding the refractive index, extinction coefficient, and layer thickness were used to calculate the steady-state layer buildup rate, which was 1.90 ± 0.15 nm/s for low-carbon steel and 0.99 ± 0.06 nm/s for cast iron owing to its better corrosion resistance. The presented methodology and findings could help understanding other processes that involve the development of layers on metallic surfaces.

IntroductionPterocarya fraxinifolia (Poiret) Spach (Caucasian wingnut, Juglandaceae) is a relict tree species, and little is known about its tolerance to abiotic stress factors, including drought stress and heavy metal toxicity. In addition, salicylic acid (SA) has been shown to have a pivotal role in plant responses to biotic and abiotic stresses.MethodsThe current study is focused on evaluating the impact of foliar application of SA in mediating Caucasian wingnut physiological and biochemical responses, including growth, relative water content (RWC), osmotic potential (Ψs), quantum yield (Fv/Fm), electrolyte leakage, lipid peroxidation, hydrogen peroxide, and antioxidant enzymes, to cadmium (Cd; 100 µM) and drought stress, as well as their interaction. Moreover, the antioxidant activity (e.g., ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, glutathione reductase, peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase activities) of the stressed trees was investigated. The study was conducted on 6-month-old seedlings under controlled environmental conditions in a greenhouse for 3 weeks.Results and discussionLeaf length, RWC, Ψs, and Fv/Fm were decreased under all treatments, although the effect of drought stress was the most pronounced. An efficient antioxidant defense mechanism was detected in Caucasian wingnut. Moreover, SA-treated Caucasian wingnut plants had lower lipid peroxidation, as one of the indicators of oxidative stress, when compared to non-SA-treated groups, suggesting the tolerance of this plant to Cd stress, drought stress, and their combination. Cadmium and drought stress also changed the ion concentrations in Caucasian wingnut, causing excessive accumulation of Cd in leaves. These results highlight the beneficial function of SA in reducing the negative effects of Cd and drought stress on Caucasian wingnut plants.

Forest thinning can be used as an adaptive measure to improve the growth and resistance of Norway spruce forests affected by climate change. The impact of different thinning intensities on sap flow, growth, and tree water deficit of 40-year-old Norway spruce was tested. High thinning intensity (-61% of basal area) resulted in increased tree-level sap flow compared to the control (+27%), but it caused a decrease in the stand-level transpiration (-34%) due to reduced leaf area index. Low-intensity thinning (-28% basal area), high-intensity thinning, and control showed similar responses of sap flow to vapour pressure deficit and global radiation, suggesting unchanged isohydric behaviour. Both low- and high-intensity treatments displayed greater radial growth than the control. There were no differences in tree water deficit between the treatments. The low-intensity treatment can be considered the best water utilisation treatment with increased growth and unchanged transpiration at the tree level. The high-intensity treatment had similar radial growth as the low-intensity but lower stand-level transpiration, implying improved soil water availability. The study expands the ecophysiological understanding of thinning as a valuable silvicultural practice for adapting forest management of Norway spruce to the effects of climate change.

Experimental evidence is given that upon the optical excitation of surface plasmon polaritons, a nonthermal electron population appears in the topmost domain of the plasmonic film directly coupled to the local fields.

HfS2 has recently emerged as a promising 2D semiconductor, but the lack of a reliable method to produce continuous films on a large scale has hindered its spreading. The atomic layer deposition of the material with the precursor tetrakis-dimethylamino-hafnium with H2S is a relatively novel solution to this problem. This paper shows that it is a facile approach to synthesizing homogeneous and smooth HfS2 layers in a controlled and reproducible manner. The deposition is examined at different temperatures and layer thicknesses, exploring the ALD window of the deposition and the chemical, morphological and electronic properties of the films. The method yielded films with wafer-sized uniformity and controlled properties and is, thus, a promising way to prepare this important transition metal dichalcogenide material.

The structural and chemical homogeneity of the developed thin film upon color etching a low-carbon steel specimen with Beraha-I type color etchant was investigated by spectroscopic ellipsometry and electron backscatter diffraction examinations. The obtained layer thickness maps showed a good correlation with the crystallographic orientation of the individual ferrite grains, corresponding well with previous studies that found a relation between etching and layer build-up speeds and the , directions. However, the refractive index map also showed a dependence on the grain orientation, which contradicts previous models that treat the developed interfering layer as a homogenous material with a constant refractive index and chemical composition. Scanning ellipsometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements confirmed that the chemical composition and refractive index of the developed layer are inhomogeneous both along the surface and the thickness of the film. It was shown that the developed layer consists of mainly oxides and sulfides and that the oxygen content decreases, while the Fe content increases along the normal direction from the surface of the film, in good agreement with the increasing refractive index. The observed differences can be related to the different etching speeds of the ferrite grains (Fe dissolution rate), depending on their orientation.

IntroductionUnder ongoing climate change, more frequent and severe drought periods accompanied by heat waves are expected in the future. Under these conditions, the tree’s survival is conditioned by fast recovery of functions after drought release. Therefore, in the presented study, we evaluated the effect of long-term water reduction in soil on tree water use and growth dynamics of Norway spruce.MethodsThe experiment was conducted in two young Norway spruce plots located on suboptimal sites at a low altitude of 440 m a.s.l. In the first plot (PE), 25% of precipitation throughfall was excluded since 2007, and the second one represented the control treatment with ambient conditions (PC). Tree sap flow, stem radial increment, and tree water deficit were monitored in two consecutive growing seasons: 2015-2016, with contrasting hydro-climatic conditions.ResultsTrees in both treatments showed relatively isohydric behavior reflected in a strong reduction of sap flow under the exceptional drought of 2015. Nevertheless, trees from PE treatment reduced sap flow faster than PC under decreasing soil water potential, exhibiting faster stomatal response. This led to a significantly lower sap flow of PE, compared to PC in 2015. The maximal sap flow rates were also lower for PE treatment, compared to PC. Both treatments experienced minimal radial growth during the 2015 drought and subsequent recovery of radial growth under the more the humid year of 2016. However, treatments did not differ significantly in stem radial increments within respective years.DiscussionPrecipitation exclusion treatment, therefore, led to water loss adjustment, but did not affect growth response to intense drought and growth recovery in the year after drought.
