With the advent of digital pathology and whole slide image digitization techniques, new paths have been opened in the pathologist's workflow: Variables that are currently assessed qualitatively now have the possibility of being quantified, it has made interconsultation easier, and raised the possibility of making labels on the slide to facilitate communication when another pathologist views the slide, as well as the possibility of remote work through virtual microscopes with access from anywhere with an Internet connection. These new tools are already part of the reality of many pathology laboratories in the world, and even some laboratories in Colombia. All these advantages make virtual microscopes and whole slide images a great tool for teaching and learning pathology, offering the student not only a static photo of a region of interest as in an atlas, but also the possibility of exploring and approach the slide as if it were in a real microscope at any time and from any place with Internet access, as well as the possibility of leaving notes to review later with the senior pathologist. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common tumor in humans, and despite not having significant mortality, its incidence is significant, as it’s morbidity is due to leaving significant aesthetic sequelae, mainly on the face. Histologically, there are 10 variants according to the WHO, some of them have a higher risk of recurrence after surgical management and are difficult to recognize on some occasions, in which they constitute a diagnostic challenge. In the present study, the pathology slide digitizer of the CIMALAB group of the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia was used to digitize a series of slides of Hospital Universitario Nacional patients with different variants of basal cell carcinoma, key labels directed by a dermatopathologist were made and were later used as a pedagogical tool with the objective that pathology residents from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia learned to more easily recognize high-risk variants of basal cell carcinoma and make a subjective comparison with the traditional learning methods used in pathology.
