The 2D Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) perovskites Cs 2 PbI 2 Cl 2 (Pb-based, n = 1) and Cs 2 SnI 2 Cl 2 (Sn-based, n = 1) stand out as unique and rare instances of entirely inorganic constituents within the more expansive category of organic/inorganic 2D perovskites. These materials have recently garnered significant attention for their strong UV-light responsiveness, exceptional thermal stability, and theoretically predicted ultrahigh carrier mobility. In this study, we synthesized Pb and Sn-based n = 1 2D RP perovskite films covering millimeter-scale areas for the first time, utilizing a one-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method under atmospheric conditions. These films feature perovskite layers oriented horizontally relative to the substrate. Multilayered Cs 3 Pb 2 I 3 Cl 4 (Pb-based, n = 2) and Cs 3 Sn 2 I 3 Cl 4 (Sn-based, n = 2) films were also obtained for the first time, and their crystallographic structures were refined by combining X-ray diffraction (XRD) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. DFT calculations and experimental optical spectroscopy support band-gap energy shifts related to the perovskite layer thickness. We demonstrate bias-free photodetectors using the Sn-based, n = 1 perovskite with reproducible photocurrent and a fast 84 ms response time. The present work not only demonstrates the growth of high-quality all-inorganic multilayered 2D perovskites via the CVD method but also suggests their potential as promising candidates for future optoelectronic applications.

The study of surface defects is one of the forefronts of halide perovskite research. In the nanoscale regime, where the surface-to-volume ratio is high, the surface plays a key role in determining the electronic properties of perovskites. Perovskite-inspired silver iodobismuthates are promising photovoltaic absorbers. Herein, we demonstrate the colloidal synthesis of phase pure and highly crystalline AgBiI 4 nanocrystals (NCs). Surface-sensitive spectroscopic techniques reveal the rich surface features of the NCs that enable their impressive long-term environmental and thermal stabilities. Notably, the surface termination and its passivation effects on the electronic properties of AgBiI 4 are investigated. Our atomistic simulations suggest that a bismuth iodide-rich surface, as in the case of AgBiI 4 NCs, does not introduce surface trap states within the band gap region of AgBiI 4 , unlike a silver iodide-rich surface. These findings may encourage the investigation of surfaces of other lead-free perovskite-inspired materials.

The long search for nontoxic alternatives to lead halide perovskites (LHPs) has shown that some compelling properties of LHPs, such as low effective masses of carriers, can only be attained in their closest Sn(II) and Ge(II) analogues, despite their tendency toward oxidation. Judicious choice of chemistry allowed formamidinium tin iodide (FASnI 3 ) to reach a power conversion efficiency of 14.81% in photovoltaic devices. This progress motivated us to develop a synthesis of colloidal FASnI 3 NCs with a concentration of Sn(IV) reduced to an insignificant level and to probe their intrinsic structural and optical properties. Intrinsic FASnI 3 NCs exhibit unusually low absorption coefficients of 4 × 10 3 cm -1 at the first excitonic transition, a 190 meV increase of the band gap as compared to the bulk material, and a lack of excitonic resonances. These features are attributed to a highly disordered lattice, distinct from the bulk FASnI 3 as supported by structural characterizations and first-principles calculations.

Lead halide perovskites open great prospects for optoelectronics and a wealth of potential applications in quantum optical and spin-based technologies. Precise knowledge of the fundamental optical and spin properties of charge-carrier complexes at the origin of their luminescence is crucial in view of the development of these applications. On nearly bulk Cesium-Lead-Bromide single perovskite nanocrystals, which are the test bench materials for next-generation devices as well as theoretical modeling, we perform low temperature magneto-optical spectroscopy to reveal their entire band-edge exciton fine structure and charge-complex binding energies. We demonstrate that the ground exciton state is dark and lays several millielectronvolts below the lowest bright exciton sublevels, which settles the debate on the bright-dark exciton level ordering in these materials. More importantly, combining these results with spectroscopic measurements on various perovskite nanocrystal compounds, we show evidence for universal scaling laws relating the exciton fine structure splitting, the trion and biexciton binding energies to the band-edge exciton energy in lead-halide perovskite nanostructures, regardless of their chemical composition. These scaling laws solely based on quantum confinement effects and dimensionless energies offer a general predictive picture for the interaction energies within charge-carrier complexes photo-generated in these emerging semiconductor nanostructures., (© 2023. The structural reconstruction at the crystal layer edges of 2D lead halide perovskites (LHPs) leads to unique edge states (ES), which are manifested by prolonged carrier lifetime and reduced emission energy. These special ES can effectively enhance the optoelectronic performance of devices, but their intrinsic origin and working mechanism remain elusive. Here it is demonstrated that the ES of a family of 2D Ruddlesden-Popper LHPs [BA 2 CsPb 2 Br 7 , BA 2 MAPb 2 Br 7 , and BA 2 MA 2 Pb 3 Br 10 (BA = butylammonium; MA = methylammonium)] arise from the rotational symmetry elevation of the PbBr 6 octahedra dangling at the crystal layer edges. These dangling octahedra give rise to localized electronic states that enable an effective transport of electrons from the interior to layer edges, and the population of electrons in both the interior states and the ES can be manipulated via controlling the external fields. Moreover, the abundant phonons, activated by the dangling octahedra, can interact with electrons to facilitate radiative recombination, counterintuitive to the suppressive role commonly observed in conventional semiconductors. This work unveils the intrinsic atomistic and electronic origins of ES in 2D LHPs, which can stimulate the exploration of ES-based exotic optoelectronic properties and the corresponding design of high-performance devices for these emergent low-dimensional semiconductors., (© 2022 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)
