In 2022, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) virus clade 2.3.4.4b became enzootic and caused mass mortality in Sandwich TernThalasseus sandvicensis and other seabird species across north-western Europe. We present data on the characteristics of the spread of the virus between and within breeding colonies and the number of dead adult Sandwich Terns recorded at breeding sites throughout north-western Europe. Within two months of the first reported mortalities, 20,531 adult Sandwich Terns were found dead, which is >17% of the total north-western European breeding population. This is probably an under-representation of total mortality, as many carcasses are likely to have gone unnoticed and unreported. Within affected colonies, almost all chicks died. After the peak of the outbreak, in a colony established by late breeders, 25.7% of tested adults showed immunity to HPAI subtype H5. Removal of carcasses was associated with lower levels of mortality at affected colonies. More research on the sources and modes of transmission, incubation times, effective containment, and immunity is urgently needed to combat this major threat for colonial seabirds.

Aluminum nitride (AlN) is a material of growing interest for power electronics, fabrication of sensors, micro-electromechanical systems, and piezoelectric generators. For the latter, the formation of nanowire arrays or nanostructured films is one of the emerging research directions. In the current work, nanostructured AlN films manufactured with normal and glancing angle magnetron sputter depositions have been investigated with scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and optical spectroscopy. Growth of the nanostructures was realized utilizing metal seed particles (Ag, Au, and Al), allowing the control of the nucleation and following growth of AlN. It was demonstrated how variations of seed particle material and size can be used to tune the parameters of nanostructures and morphology of the AlN films. Using normal angle deposition allowed the growth of bud-shaped structures, which consisted of pillars/lamellae with wurtzite-like crystalline structures. Deposition at a glancing angle of 85° led to a film of individual nanostructures located near each other and tilted at an angle of 33 degree; relative to the surface normal. Such films maintained a high degree of wurtzite-like crystallinity but had a more open structure and higher roughness than the nanostructured films grown at normal incidence deposition. Importance Hearing loss has been suggested as a risk factor for dementia, but there is still a need for high-quality research to better understand the association between these 2 conditions and the underlying causal mechanisms and treatment benefits using larger cohorts and detailed data. Objective To investigate the association between hearing loss and incident dementia, as well as how hearing aid use contributes to this association. Design, Setting, and Participants This population-based cohort study was conducted in Southern Denmark between January 2003 and December 2017 and included all residents 50 years and older. We excluded all persons with dementia before baseline as well as those who did not live in the region 5 years before baseline, with incomplete address history, or who had missing covariate information. Exposures Individual hearing status based on the Hearing Examinations in Southern Denmark database, which contains data on all pure-tone audiometry examinations performed at public hearing rehabilitation clinics in Southern Denmark. Main Outcomes and Measures Incident cases of dementia and Alzheimer disease as identified from national registries. Results The study population comprised 573 088 persons (298 006 women [52%]; mean [SD] age, 60.8 [11.3] years) with 23 023 cases of dementia and mean (SD) follow-up of 8.6 (4.3) years. Having a hearing loss was associated with an increased risk of dementia, with an adjusted hazard ratio (HR) of 1.07 (95% CI, 1.04-1.11) compared with having no hearing loss. Severe hearing loss in the better and worse ear was associated with a higher dementia risk, with an HR of 1.20 (95% CI, 1.09-1.32) and 1.13 (95% CI, 1.06-1.20), respectively, compared with having no hearing loss in the corresponding ear. The long-term operation of refractory-metal-based metamaterials is crucial for applications such as thermophotovoltaics. The metamaterials based on refractory metals like W, Mo, Ta, Nb, and Re fail primarily by oxidation. Here, the use of the noble metal Ir is proposed, which is stable to oxidation and has optical properties comparable to gold. The thermal endurance of Ir in a 3-layer-system, consisting of HfO2/Ir/HfO2, by performing annealing experiments up to 1240 °C in a pressure range from 2 × 10−6 mbar to 1 bar, is demonstrated. The Ir layer shows no oxidation in a vacuum and inert gas atmosphere. At temperatures above 1100 °C, the Ir layer starts to agglomerate due to the degradation of the confining HfO2 layers. An in situ X-ray diffraction experimental comparison between 1D multilayered Ir/HfO2 and W/HfO2 selective emitters annealed at 1000 °C, 2 × 10−6 mbar, over 100 h, confirms oxidation stability of Ir while W multilayers gradually disappear. The results of this work show that W-based metamaterials are not long-term stable even at 1000 °C. However, the oxidation resistance of Ir can be leveraged for refractory plasmonic metamaterials, such as selective emitters in thermophotovoltaic systems with strong suppression of long wavelength radiation.

Ederfuglen er i alvorlig tilbagegang i Østersøen og Nordsøen, kønsbalancen er skæv med et stort overtal af hanner, og derfor er en international forvaltningsplan er under udarbejdelse i regi af Vandfugleaftalen (AEWA). Bæredygtig forvaltning kræver opdateret viden om bestandens trækforhold og dødelighed, og den bedste kilde til denne viden er ringmærkning. Denne rapport giver et overblik over det omfattende materiale om ringmærkede og genmeldte ederfugle i Østersø/Nordsøområdet, i alt næsten 18.000 genmeldinger af mere end 125.000 ringmærkede fugle siden 1970. Detaljerede statistiske analyser af dette materiale vil kunne give vigtig ny viden om hvor ynglefugle fra forskellige områder tilbringer vinteren, og om dødeligheden hos begge køn og alle aldersklasser.
