Background: Isotretinoin is the drug of choice for severe acne. We sought to examine the potential link between isotretinoin and insulin resistance. Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis in accordance with the PRISMA statement. A comprehensive search of the PubMed/MEDLINE, SCOPUS, and Cochrane databases was performed until 12 January 2022 utilizing the PICO (Patient, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) tool. Fifteen English-language studies focusing on isotretinoin-treated acne patients were included. Serum levels of insulin, glucose, and adiponectin were evaluated before and after treatment, and insulin sensitivity was assessed using the HOMA–IR. A meta-analysis was conducted using RevMan 5.4.1 software, and a quality assessment was undertaken using the ROBINS-I tool. Results: The meta-analysis unveiled a statistically significant rise in the post-treatment levels of adiponectin, an anti-inflammatory agent, which inhibits liver glucose production while enhancing insulin sensitivity (SMD = 0.86; 95% confidence interval (95% CI) = 0.48–1.25, p-value < 0.0001; I2 = 58%). Our subgroup analysis based on study type yielded consistent findings. However, no statistically significant outcomes were observed for insulin, glucose levels, and the HOMA-IR. Conclusions: There is not a clear association between isotretinoin and insulin resistance, but it appears to enhance the serum levels of adiponectin, which participates in glucose metabolism.

Climate change and wildfire effects have continued to receive great attention in recent times due to the impact they render on the environment and most especially to the field of agriculture. The purpose of this study was to assess the synergistic impacts of climate change and wildfires on agricultural sustainability. This study adopted a cross-sectional survey design based on the quantitative research approach. Data were collected from 340 environmental experts using an online questionnaire. The results showed that extreme weather events such as heavy rains or extreme droughts negatively influence agricultural sustainability in Europe. The results showed that disruptions in ecosystems caused by climate change have a significant positive impact on agricultural sustainability in Europe. Furthermore, forest regeneration after wildfires showed statistically significant positive influence on agricultural sustainability in Europe. The economic impact of fire on crops, cattle, and farms can be estimated. This information can be used to develop and plan agricultural regions near fire-prone areas; choose the best, most cost-effective, and longest-lasting cultivar; and limit fire risk. It is also clear that increased wildfire smoke negatively affects agricultural sustainability.

Metal complexes of benzotriazole-type ligands continue to attract the intense interest of many inorganic chemistry groups around the world for a variety of reasons, including their aesthetically beautiful structures, physical properties and applications. 1-methylbenzotriazole (Mebta) is the N-substituted archetype of the parent 1H-benzotriazole. The first attempt to build a “periodic table” of Mebta, which includes its complexes with several metal ions, is described in this work. This, at first glance, trivial ligand has led to interesting results in terms of the chemistry, structures and properties of its metal complexes. This work reviews the to-date published coordination chemistry of Mebta with Mn(II), Fe(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(I), Cu(II), Zn(II), Pd(II), Au(I) and {UVIO2}2+, with emphasis on their preparations, reactivity, structures and properties. Unpublished results from our group comprising other Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes, as well as Cd(II), Hg(II), Ag(I), In(III) and Sn(IV) ones are briefly reported. Mebta can also provide access to 1D and 3D heterometallic thiocyanato-bridged Co(II)/Hg(II) and Ni(II)/Hg(II) compounds. In almost all cases, Mebta behaves as a monodentate ligand with the nitrogen of position 3 of the azole ring as the donor atom. However, there are two copper complexes in which this molecule adopts a bidentate bridging coordination behavior. Our efforts to complete the “periodic table” of Mebta are continued.

Stroke survivors often face diverse unmet needs highlighting the significance of identifying and addressing these needs to enhance rehabilitation outcomes and overall quality of life. This study aimed to validate the modified Needs Assessment Questionnaire (mNAQ) as a reliable and valid tool for assessing the needs of stroke patients in the Greek context. Additionally the research sought to identify potential differences in the assessment of stroke patients’ needs based on their stroke phase and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores. A sample of 71 adult stroke survivors adhering to World Health Organization guidelines and providing autonomous consent participated in the study. The mNAQ comprising 141 items across 12 domains was utilized to evaluate stroke patients’ needs. The NIHSS and Barthel Index (BI) were employed for functional independence and mobility assessment. Data analysis incorporated confirmatory factor analysis, exploratory factor analysis and Cronbach’s reliability analysis to establish construct validity and internal consistency. Concurrent and known-groups validity analyses were conducted; and Spearman’s rho correlation explored the relationship between mNAQ and BI scores. Non-parametric analyses were applied to identify differences based on stroke phase and NIHSS scores. The study revealed that the mNAQ initially lacked satisfactory psychometric properties in the Greek context. Subsequent modifications guided by confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses resulted in a refined three-factor scale encompassing 31 items in the domains of communication, mobility, and social functioning needs. This adapted measure effectively differentiated between acute and chronic stroke patients and those with minor and moderate strokes. In conclusion, the validated 31-item Greek mNAQ emerges as a crucial tool for comprehensively assessing the needs of stroke patients. Its application holds promise for optimizing post-stroke care improving functional outcomes and ultimately enhancing the overall well-being and quality of life for stroke survivors.

This article examines the multidimensional problem of energy poverty, focusing on its connections to climate change and its manifestation at rural and urban scales across selected European countries and Israel. The study examined 31 locations in eight countries with diverse geographical and economic backgrounds: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, North Macedonia, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Slovakia, and Israel. The article aims to understand how winter energy vulnerability in rural and urban locations in these countries could be identified using selected energy poverty indicators and how it evolves under the influence of climate change. A set of sociodemographic, infrastructural, and economic variables, combined with climate analysis, were selected and assessed for their impact on energy poverty. We found that energy poverty in most countries depends significantly on location and regional development. Due to a combination of factors influencing energy poverty, rural households tend to be more vulnerable. Furthermore, climate change consequences will likely leave rural areas more likely to experience energy poverty in the future.

The purpose of the present study was to review all available work published within the last decade focusing on coping strategies in stroke caregivers and their impact on quality of Life (QoL) and psycho-emotional status. A literature search of two databases (MEDLINE, Scopus) was conducted to identify all relevant full-text English studies published between 2013–2023. Sixteen articles were traced and were finally included. Cognitive and behavioral coping strategies were beneficial for stroke caregivers’ and survivors’ QoL. The level of mutuality in the caregiver-survivor relationship was associated with the impact of depressive symptoms on caregivers’ QoL and the protective effect of mutuality on survivors’ QoL over time. The level and quality of social support were positively associated with QoL for stroke caregivers and survivors. Caregivers’ preparedness was a moderator for the impact of depression on both caregivers’ and survivors’ QoL. High levels of spirituality had a significant role in ameliorating the negative impact of depressive symptoms on the psychological and physical QoL of stroke caregivers and survivors. In conclusion, the study of coping strategies can be used as a psychological reserve in the process of stroke rehabilitation and actively contribute to improving the QoL of both caregivers and stroke survivors.

Over the years, multiple taxonomies have emerged to categorize the diverse range of movements, particularly those linked to music, with a wealth of literature in music performance exploring this topic. Despite extensive discussions, conflicting opinions persist, and a consensus on a single taxonomy remains elusive, highlighting the intricate nature of movement types. In Hindustani (North Indian Classical) Dhrupad vocal music, singers often appear performing manual interactions with imaginary objects, referred to as "MIIOs" (Manual Interactions with Imaginary Objects) in this study. This paper revisits existing taxonomies in respect to gesture-sound relationships, examining perspectives in classifying MIIOs within these frameworks. Based on the results, it underscores the challenge of classifying MIIOs into these established, emphasizing their unique status in the realm of music-related movements.

The paper reports a study aimed at investigating tertiary education students' engagement and interactions in the traditional face-to-face learning environment and the sequentially applied distance online learning environment imposed by the sudden upsurge of a worldwide health emergency, the COVID-19 pandemic in Spring 2020. The study took place in four distinct science learning communities formed by a total of 347 undergraduate students attending three different academic majors (Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Food Science and Technology) and 13 postgraduate students attending a Masters program related to Chemistry Education, in two Greek universities. The majority of the measured variables were shown to depend on the institution, the academic major, and the semester of study, although to a varying degree. Data analysis provided evidence for a statistically significant lower level of emotional engagement in the online relative to the traditional learning environment among the students of all three undergraduate learning communities. Multiple regression analysis showed that this documented decrease in students' emotional engagement is largely explained by the concurrent decrease at the level of human interaction (either student-student or student-instructor) upon the passage from the traditional to the online learning environment.

With the recent advent of research focusing on the body’s significance in music, the integration of physiological sensors in the context of empirical methodologies for music has also gained momentum. Given the recognition of covert muscular activity as a strong indicator of musical intentionality and the previously ascertained link between physical effort and various musical aspects, electromyography (EMG)—signals representing muscle activity—has also experienced a noticeable surge. While EMG technologies appear to hold good promise for sensing, capturing, and interpreting the dynamic properties of movement in music, which are considered innately linked to artistic expressive power, they also come with certain challenges, misconceptions, and predispositions. The paper engages in a critical examination regarding the utilisation of muscle force values from EMG sensors as indicators of physical effort and musical activity, particularly focusing on (the intuitively expected link to) sound levels. For this, it resides upon empirical work, namely practical insights drawn from a case study of music performance (Persian instrumental music) in the context of a music class. The findings indicate that muscle force can be explained by a small set of (six) statistically significant acoustic and movement features, the latter captured by a state-of-the-art (full-body inertial) motion capture system. However, no straightforward link to sound levels is evident.

Ischemic stroke (IS) exhibits significant heterogeneity in terms of etiology and pathophysiology. Several recent studies highlight the significance of inflammation in the onset and progression of IS. White blood cell subtypes, such as neutrophils and monocytes, participate in the inflammatory response in various ways. On the other hand, high-density lipoproteins (HDL) exhibit substantial anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions. Consequently, novel inflammatory blood biomarkers have emerged, such as neutrophil to HDL ratio (NHR) and monocyte to HDL ratio (MHR). Literature research of two databases (MEDLINE and Scopus) was conducted to identify all relevant studies published between 1 January 2012 and 30 November 2022 dealing with NHR and MHR as biomarkers for IS prognosis. Only full-text articles published in the English language were included. Thirteen articles have been traced and are included in the present review. Our findings highlight the utility of NHR and MHR as novel stroke prognostic biomarkers, the widespread application, and the calculation of which, along with their inexpensive cost, make their clinical application extremely promising.

The transient acoustic dynamics of a splash cymbal are investigated via the Finite Element Method-Boundary Element Method. Real three-dimensional motion data recorded from the interaction of drummer–drumstick–cymbal provide the initial and the loading conditions to the simulated interaction of the drumstick–cymbal Finite Element Models. Progressively intensified free strokes are used as loading conditions for both experiment and simulation. The velocity values of the moving drumstick in various drumming conditions are monitored, recorded, and analysed to provide input data into the time domain simulations. The synergy of motion capturing and numerical methods allows computing the sound generated by the combined interaction of the vibroacoustic behaviour of the cymbal with the motor-interaction of the performer. The proposed methodology promotes a novel perspective in musical instrument design, optimization, and manufacturing considering performance discrepancies intentionally introduced by performers.

Mobile mental health units (MMHUs) have been proposed as an effective model to serve the mental health needs of remote underserved areas. In 2013, the Department of Psychiatry, University of Crete, started a pilot MMHU to cover the needs of remote rural areas of the Heraklion Prefecture. The main objectives were early detection, prevention and therapy of patients with severe psychiatric disorders, without access to regular psychiatric care. In addition to regular visits to primary care health centers, a community support network was established. During this 10-year period, the MMHU has evaluated 3343 patients and performed 19,935 visits. The most frequent diagnoses are depression and anxiety (52.7%) whereas psychosis and bipolar disorders are the third (12.7%) and fifth most frequent diagnoses (4.7%). Half of the patients with depression/anxiety were older than 65 years and one third were living alone. Furthermore, the first visit with the MMHU of severely mentally ill was about 15 years later from the self-reported onset of psychotic symptoms. We discuss how to improve our ability to detect and intervene earlier in patients with severe mental illness, and how to address effectively, both pharmacologically and psychosocially, the depression and loneliness of older individuals living in small remote communities.

Embodiment lies at the core of music cognition, prompting recent pedagogical shifts towards a multi-sensory, whole-body approach. However, the education of oral music genres that rely exclusively on direct teacher–disciple transmission through live demonstration and imitation is now undergoing a transformation by rapidly adapting to technology-mediated platforms. This paper examines challenges in embodied facets of video-mediated synchronous distance Hindustani music pedagogy. For this, it takes an ethnomusicological stance and showcases a thematic analysis of interviews featuring Dhrupad music practitioners. The analysis is driven and organized by the 4E Cognition principles, which stress the intimate relationship between body, mind, and environment. Findings indicate that while this adaptation aims to make music content more widely accessible, it comes at the cost of reducing opportunities for multi-modal engagement and interaction among participants. Results reveal limitations in transmitting non-verbal, embodied, multi-sensory cues, along with visual and acoustic disruptions of a sense of shared spatial and physical context, that hinder effective interaction and a sense of immersion, elements that are deemed vital in music education. They prompt concerns about the suitability of conventional videoconferencing platforms and offer key insights for the development of alternative technologies that can better assist embodied demands of the pedagogical practices involved.
