Plastic pollution, a pervasive environmental crisis, arises from the improper disposal of non-biodegradable plastics, endangering species and ecosystems worldwide. While microplastics (MPs) have been extensively studied in various ecosystems, they have received scant attention in port environments, despite their pervasive presence. This review selected published articles conducted in ports worldwide between 2010 and 2024 to determine the concentration, accumulation characteristics, and driving factors. A total of 57 studies across 78 ports met the selection criteria, examining water, sediment, and biota in 49, 51, and 23 ports, respectively. The average concentrations of MPs in water collected by net and grab sampling, sediment, fish, and invertebrates were approximately 39.2 ± 68.4 items/m3, 4100.7 ± 5761.8 items/m3, 243.6 ± 240.2 items/kg, 26.1 ± 21.1 items/individual, and 9.4 ± 8.1 items/individual in ports worldwide, respectively. Asia and the Americas exhibited the highest concentration of MPs in ports across all media. The dominant MP morphotypes included fibers, fragments, films, foams, pellets, and spheres, with sizes frequently between 1 and 1000 μm in biota and water and between 1 and 5 mm in sediments. Port structures and the presence of rivers are key drivers of MP accumulation. MP pollution in ports poses potential ecological and health risks. Among the studied ports, 23% had MP numbers in sediment greater than the predicted no effect concentration (PNEC). After the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, the global power structure entered a period of geopolitical transition. An evolved vision in the twenty‐first century shows the arrival of the geopolinomic order based on the combination of economic, political and territorial codes. Geopolinomic codes, in synergy with the global political economy, regulate the territorial and infrastructural arrangement of the world order in periods of geopolitical transition between hegemonic and emerging powers. Spatialization of power politics requires going through a set of geopolitical representations and this adds a thin discursive layer to the territorial hegemonic order. I argue that the development of geopolinomic codes allows for a more significant infusion of political economy through the centrality of territorial communication networks. A country with more manoeuvring power in adjusting geopolinomic codes and its triple levels can change the balance of global power structures in its favour. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Maritime spaces have transformed rapidly the last decades. Open waters and beaches have become restricted and sometimes privatized enclosures. Different forms of extractivism have led to biodiversity loss and in particular to declining fish populations. Additionally, large-scale coastal and marine infrastructure projects, such as deepening and widening of shipping channels, have destroyed important habitats. These profound socio-ecological transformations have had an impact on geographies of resource access and control and consequently on the ability of actors to access, use and benefit from coastal and marine space. Moreover, changes in the lending policies of local banks have posed additional and severe challenges for fishers’ ability to fish. Such processes effect in particular the livelihoods of coastal and small-scale fisher communities and consequently increase existing inequalities and injustices. We suggest to bring the literature on ocean justice and access and property into dialogue and develop a heuristic for analysing inequalities and justice claims. Based on qualitative case studies focussing on the Sicily (Italy), the Elbe estuary (Germany) and the Lofoten (Norway), we show that investigating access relations facilitates the identification of unequal societal relationships with nature. Our cases illustrate that power relations in which privatization processes and access relations are embedded, determine whether injustices can be translated into justice claims and how successful these claims are. Moreover, unequal socio-ecological relations are also influenced by what we call translocal justice. Translocal justice is often lost in processes of commodification, privatization and in the rescaling of political authority and power, as local ties and confidential relationships vanish. The article has, as its basic source, three royal charters of the ninth- to thirteenth-century period from Kerala. The royal need for precious metals to issue currency alone explains the rulers' anxiety to give concessions to merchants engaged in overseas trade. The article examines how this policy was conducted and how far it was successful. This article looks at aspects of the economic developments in medieval Kerala such as in land use, agriculture, craft production, trade, rise of urban centres and the use of money. These resulted, among other things, in the emergence of a new sensibility and the (re)invention of media to express it. Placing them in the larger context of the peninsula, it seeks to raise questions about their implications for understanding a transition from the 'medieval' to a later formation and discuss various possibilities. It concludes with the observation that 'Whether or not one can, or has to, call what would be in store a capitalist formation, one thing is clear: changes were on the cards. This article uses the concept of ‘transimperial’ history to show how religious transformations within then between different empires led to the development of new religious geographies and the alteration of existing religious centres. Combining examples from Asian, African, European and American empires, the article points to common patterns across four categories of religious space: steam ports (such as Bombay), railway towns (such as Harbin), preexisting pilgrimage places (such as Bodhgaya), and imperial borderlands (such as Hawaii). These transimperial sites spaces enabled doctrinal, ritual, linguistic, and organizational changes to Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism, enabling the propagation of such new religions as Theosophy and Baha’ism. Further attention is paid to architectural and organizational change, as well as the use of printing and translation in promoting new versions of these religions to different population groups. This article investigates Haifa Port's carceral and mobile geographies by examining how Israel is being re-made, rebranded, and harnessed as 'safe and secure space' for the transits of global capital. The article contends with ports as key protagonists of empire, situated in an enduring and ongoing history of colonial routes and route-making that are raced and moving with/through the transits of colonised bodies and commodities. Haifa Port – and Israel itself – are examined as nodes in a matrix of global colonial-capitalist relations, moulded to an essential geographic rationale, in which everything moves and must continue circulating. Yet, in exploring the specific dense and durable materialities of Haifa Port – and the racial logics of the settler colonial state – the article also works to understand that which becomes contained and fixed in particular sites, spaces, bodies, and lives. Sustainable development is crucial to ports due to the interconnection between port activities, the economy, and the environment. This study aims to explore how port digitalization initiatives played the role of promoting sustainable development. To this purpose, the author/authors adopted a mixed methods approach using as database the World Ports Sustainability Program, which features 74 port digitalization initiatives. The first step focused on a quantitative analysis of the distribution of said initiatives in terms of sustainable development goals, followed by a thematic analysis to explore their contribution. The findings indicate that more than 72% of ports addressed sustainable development goals 8, 9, 13, and 17. Digitalization initiatives in ports have mainly focused on improving their infrastructure and operational performance, enabling them to address climate change challenges. This paper presents the Smart Logistics Node concept, which combines the physical infrastructure of logistics nodes with digital systems to enhance collaboration. The Smart Logistics Node benefits from data sharing, supporting infrastructure, and Connected and Automated Transport (CAT) technologies. Based on a literature review on logistics nodes and CAT, we propose a general classification of Smart Logistics Nodes distinguishing upon the node function, degree of organisational (de-)centralisation, digital integration, and infrastructure support for automated driving. Then, we classify sixteen logistics nodes and find that high digital integration is common while automation is lacking. Further automation entails mixed traffic on public roads and requires organisational changes that do not always align with current business models. Our work supports the adoption of emerging technology at logistics nodes and the comparability of business cases. As an important part of the comprehensive transportation system, ports play an important role in economic development. In the context of the '3060 double carbon' target, the high-quality development (HQD) of ports is receiving attention from many parties. The aim of this paper is to examine the dynamic evolution of HQD in China's coastal ports from the perspective of green total factor productivity (GTFP). Firstly, the calculation standards of undesirable outputs are given, and integrated environmental dumping indicator is calculated by the combination weight calculation model based on game theory. Then, the super-efficiency DEA-GML (Data Envelopment Analysis-Data Envelopment Analysis-Global Malmquist-Luenberger) index model based on directional distance function (DDF) is used to measure the GTFP growth of ports. Furthermore, the dynamic evolution of GTFP growth of ports is explored using the kernel density estimation. The findings show that the GTFP growth of coastal ports has continued to improve during the examined period. However, there is the problem that port construction inputs cannot bring effective outputs, and there is a bifurcation that tends to stabilize within coastal ports. California must operate and maintain an effective and efficient transportation infrastructure while ensuring that the health of communities and the planet are not compromised. By assessing transportation projects using a life-cycle perspective, all relevant emission sources and activities from the construction, operation, maintenance, and end-of-life phases can be analyzed and mitigated. This report presents a framework to assess the life-cycle human health and climate change impacts from six types of transportation projects: (1) Roadways; (2) Marine ports; (3) Logistical distribution centers; (4) Railyards; (5) Bridges and overpasses; and (6) Airports. The framework was applied using an integrated model to assess fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, noise impacts, and monetized damages (Value of Statistical Life, Social Cost of Carbon) from two case studies: routine resurfacing and vehicle operations on road segments within the San Francisco Bay Area using 2019 data, and annual marine, cargo, rail, trucking, and infrastructure maintenance operations at the Port of Oakland in 2020. The results suggest that emission sources in a project’s supply chain and construction (material production and deliveries, construction activities, fuel refining) can significantly contribute to the full scope of impacts from transportation systems. Equitable mitigation policies (e.g., electrification, pollution control technologies) need to be tailored to address the sources that impact communities the most.

Maritime is a broad field with various branches. It encompasses the shipping aspect of transportation, facilitated by the maritime leg, and the other leg constituted by coastal facilities. Among these coastal facilities, ports play a significant role as crucial centers for loading goods onto ships or unloading cargoes from ships to land facilities, factories, and final destinations. Ports hold great economic importance in terms of trade, fishing, tourism, and transportation. They serve as vital hubs through which the vitality of trade and economy is manifested in many countries. Due to their role in facilitating this economic linkage, these facilities must meet structural requirements in terms of safety, environmental considerations, and adherence to maritime regulations. For these reasons, coastal facilities are periodically inspected by Port Authorities operating under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (MTI). Upon successful inspection, they are granted operational licenses. The aim of this study is to identify and analyze deficiencies found during ministry inspections of coastal facilities. The deficiencies identified during inspections for operational licenses of coastal facilities were analyzed using data analysis methods. Specifically, taking the Kocaeli region as an example, which hosts some of Turkey's largest ports, inspection results were analyzed to determine the most cited issues. The findings of the study regarding coastal facilities in the Kocaeli region revealed several deficiencies, including: "Inability to view the approval of the implementation project; deficiencies in first aid, fire, ISPS, and induction training records of coastal facility personnel; lack of any pull tests demonstrating the safe load-bearing capacities despite visual inspections indicating sufficient mooring bollards; non-functional fire alarm button on the pier; absence of safety ladders or stairs at the coastal facility; and failure to indicate areas leased in the general layout plan." Identifying and analyzing inspection deficiencies of coastal facilities will contribute to the literature by enabling improvements in various management areas and fostering safer, more environmentally friendly, and sustainable management of coastal areas. Since this study covers a topic that has not been previously explored in national and international literature, it will serve as a reference for port and other coastal facility managers and workers. The use of semiochemical-baited traps for detection, monitoring, and sampling bark beetles and woodboring beetles (BBWB) has rapidly increased since the early 2000s. Semiochemical-baited survey traps are used in generic (broad community level) and specific (targeted toward a species or group) surveys to detect nonnative and potentially invasive BBWB, monitor established populations of invasive or damaging native species, and as a tool to survey natural communities for various purposes. Along with expansion in use, much research on ways to improve the efficacy of trapping surveys for the detection of specific pests as well as BBWB in general has been conducted. In this review, we provide information on intrinsic and extrinsic factors and how they influence the efficacy of detecting BBWB in traps. Intrinsic factors, such as trap type and color, and other factors are described, as well as important extrinsic factors such as habitat selection, horizontal and vertical placement, and disturbance. When developing surveys, consideration of these factors should increase the species richness and/or abundance of BBWB captured in traps and increase the probability of detecting nonnative species that may be present. During generic surveys, deploying more than one trap type or color, using an array of lures, and trapping at different vertical and horizontal positions is beneficial and can increase the number of species captured. Specific surveys generally rely on predetermined protocols that provide recommendations on trap type, color, lure, and trap placement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study identifies and analyzes the relative importance of the multi-faceted factors that drive the decision to automate container terminals and the realized benefits, thus establishing how accurately terminal operators predicted the benefits of automation. The empirical analysis relies on a survey-based approach and the input of senior representatives of terminal operating entities in charge of the fully and semi-automated container terminals. The analysis of the findings, using statistical tools (i.e., descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations, ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis), reveals that most of the benefits assumed by an individual terminal operator materialized once the automated terminal was in operation. It also concludes that expectations often exceed benefits and vice versa. A stepwise regression analysis enables the search of causal relationships between drivers and realized benefits with key characteristics of automated container terminals, such as their organizational features, technical dimensions, and the maritime and urban markets they serve. Integrating Internet of Things (IoT) devices into port operations has brought substantial improvements in efficiency, automation, and connectivity. However, this technological advancement has also introduced new operational risks, particularly in terms of cybersecurity vulnerabilities and potential disruptions. The primary objective of this scientific article is to comprehensively analyze and identify the primary security threats and vulnerabilities that IoT devices face when deployed in port environments. This includes examining potential risks, such as unauthorized access, cyberattacks, malware, etc., that could disrupt critical port operations and compromise sensitive information. This research aims to assess the critical entities associated with IoT devices in port environments and develop a comprehensive risk-management framework tailored to these settings. It also aims to explore and propose strategic measures and best practices to mitigate these risks. For this research, a risk-management framework grounded in the principles of ORM, which includes risk avoidance, reduction, sharing, and retention strategies, was developed. The primary outcome of this research is the development of a comprehensive risk-management framework specifically tailored for IoT devices in port environments, utilizing Operational Risk-Management (ORM) methodology. This framework will systematically identify and categorize critical vulnerabilities and potential threats for IoT devices. By addressing these objectives, the article seeks to provide actionable insights and guidelines that can be adopted by port authorities and stakeholders to safeguard their IoT infrastructure and maintain operational stability in the face of emerging threats. Containers are commonly thought to be important for international trade but the evidence is thin. I argue that containers were important to U.S. trade expansion but not when they were first adopted. Using previously unused data, I show that U.S. aggregate freight factors did not fall when containers were first adopted. It took a decade before containerised freight rates fell. Falling freight rates matter for trade growth, accounting for 36 percent of the increase in U.S. import share of output from 1972 to 1987 when the impact of containers began to be felt. Institutional factors in port industry delayed containers' significant labour cost savings. Compensation deals to longshoremen kept labour costs up despite rapidly increasing labour productivity in ports. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article advances the historiography of port cities, waterfront trade unionism and imperial solidarity by comparing two distant places that, despite their colonial connections, are rarely juxtaposed: Britain and Australia. It investigates the relationship between the metropole and the periphery via the Great Dock Strike of 1889 in London (a 5-week dispute that ended in victory for the dockers) and the Australian Maritime Strike of 1890 (a 12-week strike that ended in defeat for the workers). This research shows how the responses to the strikes from the other side of the world reflected the characteristics of port cities and their waterfront workers. They were also largely determined by three neglected themes - the extent of colonial ties, the uses of the new telegraph network, and the impact of trade cycles - and how these themes influenced each other. The first theme develops and complicates Bernard Porter's argument that Britons were indifferent towards imperial affairs. On the one hand, this article confirms his position by showing the asymmetry of imperial relations between the outward-looking Australians and the mainly inward-looking Britons. On the other, it demonstrates how imperial connections led to solidarity, and how Britain's working-class leaders embodied an elitist imperial mindset. In doing so, this article draws new parallels between Britain's working-class leaders and colonial administrators. Despite their different roles and educational backgrounds, both groups - imbued with a sense of imperial superiority - demonstrated a similarly paternalistic approach in their work overseas. Therefore, imperial solidarity in port cities is a prism through which the prevalence and impact of the British imperial ethos - a far wider subject - can be illuminated and assessed. The theme of networks is at the forefront of studies on plural policing, but concepts, typologies and theories focus more on collaborations than on conflicts. Based on a case study of the largest port complex in South America, the Brazilian port of Santos, this article proposes a theoretical framework for understanding capital struggles in security networks. It explores how struggles emerge from dynamics in which the network is at stake, such as membership and principles, or the forms of capital within it, which are claimed, contested, disputed or abdicated. Providing electrical power to ships while they are docked, cold ironing allows ships to turn off their engines and reduces emissions of air pollutants and greenhouse gases. This study identifies and assesses ship and port emissions and analyzes the potential for emission reduction achievable by cold ironing in European ports. It includes (1) a review of the current state of cold ironing in European ports; (2) an analysis of the time spent in ports by ships; (3) a quantification of emissions potentially avoided by means of a larger-scale use of cold ironing in Europe; (4) an estimation of the benefits achievable and the perspective to play a role in meeting emission reduction targets, improving air quality in port cities; (5) an analysis of the challenges and limitations of larger-scale cold ironing implementation; (6) potential solutions to overcome them. The results of this study could have important implications for (a) the shipping industry, which could benefit from the need for additional standardized electrical equipment onboard; (b) port authorities, which could benefit from providing additional services to the ships; (c) policymakers working to reduce emissions and promote energy efficiency, who could better approach their local and global targets. Similar to world trade, container transportation and the tendency to transport various cargoes with containers is increasing in Türkiye. Moreover, in a world where production centers will be shifting with the Covid-19 pandemic, it can be said that Türkiye's production will increase and over and above expectations, container traffic in its ports will expand. In this context, it is anticipated that the urban of Kocaeli will need more container transportation between container ports and logistics centers. Development processes need to be well planned so that this increase in container transportation does not disrupt the traffic of cities, ports and logistics centers. This planning should be carried out by reconciling the current situation, the demands of the logistic stakeholders and the future vision. This study aims to reveal whether Kocaeli container ports, logistics centers and the urban need alternative transportation methods for economic and sustainable development and to offer solution suggestions by analyzing the opinions of all logistics stakeholders. The data collected in the research were analyzed using the Kruskal Wallis H test in the IBM SPSS 22.0 program, and the hypotheses were questioned. Reconsidering alternative opportunities in transportation for the development of ports and logistics stakeholders of Kocaeli urban in a competitive structure, increasing the road and railway transportation capacities between the ports and Köseköy Logistics center will be appropriate, a new/alternative transportation method will have a positive impact on the efficiency of the ports/logistics businesses, inland waterway/canal to the logistics center. The Physical Internet (PI) is a paradigm-changing and technology-driven vision, which is expected to significantly impact the development of the freight transport and logistics (FTL) system of today. However, the development of the FTL system towards the PI creates much uncertainty for its current stakeholders. Ports are one of those stakeholders that are expected to be profoundly affected by these developments. However, research that focuses on port policy, under the uncertain developments towards the PI, is still lacking. By providing port authorities with insights and recommendations on robust policy areas, we address this void in literature. We conduct a scenario analysis in combination with multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) to determine the importance of port performance indicators and policy areas in different scenarios. The most significant, uncertain, and orthogonal factors for the development of the PI are technological development and institutional development. We find that for a proper alignment with the PI vision, in three out of four scenarios, ports should prioritize the implementation of digital solutions and standards, as opposed to an infrastructure focused policy. This research analyses the configuration and activities of the area of influence of the port system of Cartagena de Indias and its impact on urban mobility during the period 2018-2020. The methodology describes the dimensions of geographical scope and territorial configuration, differentiating the spatial configuration linked to the logistical specialisation of the port, and then reviews the statistics on flows of cargo vehicles and passengers accessing the land corridor in the urban area. Next, a focus group is used to assess the conflicts in the face of port operations by analysing their impact on the uses and densities of flows. The results highlight the convergence and conflicts of port flows with those of daily urban mobility, validating the hypothesis of mobility difficulties due to the intensity and proximity of port activities. Analysing technological transformations and emerging practices, the paper reveals how new technologies and cross-company collaborations are shaping the future of the maritime industry. The example of the BYD Explorer fleet, the first Ro-Ro vessel specialised in transporting electric cars, underlines the adaptability and innovation in response to the current needs of the automotive industry and sustainability requirements. At the same time, the collaboration between MOL and Bearing, which has led to the development of advanced solutions based on artificial intelligence, demonstrates the positive impact of innovation in optimising maritime operations. This study examined the effects of information systems on preventing marine pollution. In this study, 170 respondents from shipping companies in Lagos State were chosen, and a survey research design was adopted. A factorial analysis was adopted to examine factors influencing pollution in the Nigerian maritime industry. The findings demonstrated that four factors may explain 72.8% of the common variance shared by seven variables. This is the reflection of the KMO value, 0.717, which can be considered good and also indicates that factor analysis was useful for the variables. Furthermore, the result shows the rho values to be 0.759 at p equals to 0.000, which is less than 0.05; hence, there is a significant relationship existing between the examined variables, which are information systems and pollution prevention. It was concluded that the release of solid waste such as plastics, ballast water, oil spill gases, defecating in the sea, vessel collisions, and abandoned vessels are factors responsible for polluting the marine environment. The circular economy (CE) brings many opportunities, but also many challenges for ports, cities, and their hinterland. The goal of this paper is twofold. First, we embrace the inherent uncertainty of the spatial impact of the CE on ports and cities. We employ scenario methodology to guide us in steering this uncertainty by developing four scenarios. To explore the complexity of these four scenarios, we focus on the Dutch province of South-Holland. This region hosts the port of Rotterdam, the largest port in Europe, and its direct hinterland consists of a dense urbanised region. As such, the four scenarios cannot only shed a light on the future of the port, but also how its relations with its direct urbanized hinterland can potentially change. In two scenarios deglobalisation occurs. The consequences are, on the one hand, that the port's focus changes more to its direct hinterland instead of a global oriented focus. On the other hand, the existing water bound industrial areas in, or nearby cities increase in importance, in contrast to the contemporary pressure to redevelop these into waterfront residential and commercial areas. In other words, port and city/region grow towards each other. The second goal of the paper is to dive into the specific consequences of these scenarios for day-to-day planning practices. By combining micro-economic and AIS shipping data, we discovered the most important terminals and industrial areas for the transition towards a CE in port, city, and hinterland.
