We present 50-fs, single-shot measurements of the x-ray thermal diffuse scattering (TDS) from copper foils that have been shocked via nanosecond laser-ablation up to pressures above 135~GPa. We hence deduce the x-ray Debye-Waller (DW) factor, providing a temperature measurement. The targets were laser-shocked with the DiPOLE 100-X laser at the High Energy Density (HED) endstation of the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser (EuXFEL). Single x-ray pulses, with a photon energy of 18 keV, were scattered from the samples and recorded on Varex detectors. Despite the targets being highly textured (as evinced by large variations in the elastic scattering), and with such texture changing upon compression, the absolute intensity of the azimuthally averaged inelastic TDS between the Bragg peaks is largely insensitive to these changes, and, allowing for both Compton scattering and the low-level scattering from a sacrificial ablator layer, provides a reliable measurement of $T/\Theta_D^2$, where $\Theta_D$ is the Debye temperature. We compare our results with the predictions of the SESAME 3336 and LEOS 290 equations of state for copper, and find good agreement within experimental errors. IntroductionGlobalization has increased the importance of multicultural research to address health disparities and improve healthcare outcomes for underrepresented communities. The International Nursing Network for HIV Research (The Network) serves as a platform for researchers to collaborate on cross-cultural and cross-national HIV studies. This article discusses the Network's approach to overcoming barriers in multicultural and multinational research in a qualitative context.MethodsThe network created a protocol to guide decision-making throughout the translation process of qualitative data collected from participants in their native languages. The protocol includes aspects of why, when, what, who, how, where, and by what means the translation is completed.ResultsThe protocol has allowed researchers to enhance the validity, reliability, and cultural sensitivity of translation process, ensuring the clarity and impact of their research findings.DiscussionRigorous translation practices promote cross-cultural understanding and respect for participants' perspectives, fostering global collaborations and knowledge exchange.

4. All-optical method to directly measure the pressure-volume-temperature equation of state of fluids in the diamond anvil cell

We have developed a new all-optical method to directly measure the pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) equation of state (EOS) of fluids and transparent solids in the diamond anvil high pressure cell by measuring the volume of the sample chamber. Our method combines confocal microscopy and white light interference with a new analysis method which exploits the mutual dependence of sample density and refractive index: Experimentally, the refractive index determines the measured sample chamber thickness (and therefore the measured sample volume/density), yet the sample density is by far the dominant factor in determining the variation in refractive index with pressure. Our analysis method allows us to obtain a set of values for the density and refractive index which are mutually consistent, and agree with the experimental data within error. We have conducted proof-of-concept experiments on a variety of samples (H$_{2}$O, CH$_{4}$, C$_{2}$H$_{6}$, C$_{3}$H$_{8}$, KCl and NaCl) at ambient temperature, and at high temperatures up to just above 500 K. Our proof-of-concept data demonstrate that our method is able to reproduce known fluid and solid EOS within error. Furthermore, we demonstrate that our method allows us to directly and routinely measure the PVT EOS of simple fluids at GPa pressures up to, at least, 514 K (the highest temperature reached in our study). A reasonable estimation of the known sources of error in our volume determinations indicates that the error is currently $\pm$ 2.7% at high temperature, and that it is feasible to reduce it to ca. $\pm$ 1% in future work., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physics of Fluids

The emergence of correlated phenomena arising from the combination of 1$\mathrm{T}$ and 1$\mathrm{H}$ van der Waals layers is the focus of intense research. Here, we synthesize a novel self-stacked 6$\mathrm{R}$ phase in NbSeTe, showing a perfect alternating 1T and 1H layers that grow coherently along the c-direction, as revealed by scanning transmission electron microscopy. Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy shows a mixed contribution of the trigonal and octahedral Nb bands to the Fermi level. Diffuse scattering reveals temperature-independent short-range charge fluctuations with propagation vector $\mathrm{q_{CO}}$=(0.25,0), derived from the condensation of a longitudinal mode in the 1T layer. We observe that ligand disorder quenches the formation of a charge density wave. Magnetization measurements suggest the presence of an inhomogeneous, short-range magnetic order, further supported by the absence of a clear phase transition in the specific heat. These experimental analyses in combination with \textit{ab initio} calculations indicate that the ground state of 6$\mathrm{R}$-NbSeTe is described by a statistical distribution of short-range charge-modulated and spin-correlated regions driven by ligand disorder. Our results devise a route to synthesize 1$\mathrm{T}$-1$\mathrm{H}$ self-stacked bulk heterostructures to study emergent phases of matter., Comment: 12 pages, including Supplementary Information. 4 figures + 6 supplementary figures

We study loops which are universal (that is, isotopically invariant) with respect to the property of flexibility ($xy\cdot x = x\cdot yx$). We also weaken this to semi-universality, that is, loops in which every left and right isotope is flexible, but not necessarily every isotope. One of our main results is that universally flexible, inverse property loops are Moufang loops. On the other hand, semi-universally flexible, inverse property loops are diassociative. Phase transition theory, implemented quantitatively by thermodynamic scaling, has explained the evolution of Coronavirus extremely high contagiousness caused by a few key mutations from CoV2003 to CoV2019 identified among hundreds, as well as the later 2021 evolution to Omicron caused by 30 mutations. It also showed that the 2022 strain BA.5 with five mutations began a new path. Here we show that the early 2023 strains BKK with one stiffening mutation confirm that path, and the single flexing mutation of a later 2023 variant EG.5 strengthens it further. The few mutations of the new path have greatly reduced pandemic deaths, for mechanical reasons proposed here., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure

AbstractAs the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the world, immunocompromised individuals such as people with HIV (PWH) may have faced a disproportionate impact on their health and HIV outcomes, both from COVID-19 and from the strategies enacted to contain it. Based on the SPIRIT guidelines, we describe the protocol for an international multisite observational study being conducted by The International Nursing Network for HIV Research, with the Coordinating Center based at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Nursing. Site Principal Investigators implement a standardized protocol to recruit PWH to complete the study online or in-person. Questions address demographics; HIV continuum of care indicators; mental and social health; COVID-19 and vaccination knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and fears; and overall outcomes. Results of this study will contribute to knowledge that can inform responses to future public health crises to minimize their impacts on vulnerable populations such as PWH.

We present the twisted covariant form hierarchies (TCFHs) of warped (massive) IIA AdS backgrounds. As a consequence we demonstrate that all Killing spinor form bilinears satisfy a generalisation of the conformal Killing-Yano equation with respect to the TCFH connections. We also explore some of the properties of TCFHs which include the reduced holonomy of the minimal TCFH connections for generic backgrounds. Furthermore, we investigate the interplay between TCFHs and hidden symmetries of probes propagating on IIA AdS backgrounds. We find that some of the Killing spinor form bilinears of near horizon geometries of a class of IIA intersecting brane configurations are Killing-Yano forms and so generate hidden symmetries for spinning particle probes., Comment: 29 pages

Here we examine the evolution of beta-2 microglobulin in terms of its hydropathic shapes, a theoretical construct that has revealed important trends. The dynamics of many proteins are largely driven by interactions between the protein itself and the thin water film that covers it. \b{eta}2m constitutes the basic building unit of the immunoglobulin superfamily; the evolution of its amino acid sequences from chickens to mice to humans provides new information about its multiple functions. Our hydrodynamic method involves concepts of topological shape evolution towards a critical point for optimized functions. The results are in excellent agreement with experiment for the details of the mouse-human evolution, as well as both the dangerous natural amyloid aggregation mutation D76N, and six other DN test mutations., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Little is known about how demographic, employment and meteorological factors impact physical activity. We conducted an analysis to explore these associations from participants (N = 447) from six cities in the United States and matched their activity data with abstracted local meteorological data from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather reports. Participants were purposively recruited in 3-month blocks, from December 2015 to October 2017, to reflect physical activity engagement across the seasons. We calculated total physical activity (minutes/week) based on 7-day physical activity recall. Mild correlations were observed between meteorological factors and correlated with lower physical activity. Participants were least active in autumn (Median = 220 min/week) and most active in spring (Median = 375 min/week). In addition to level of education and total hours of work, maximum temperature, relative humidity, heating degree day, precipitation and sunset time together explained 17.6% of variance in total physical activity. Programs assisting in employment for PLHIV and those that promote indoor physical activity during more strenuous seasons are needed. Additional research to better understand the selection, preferences, and impact of indoor environments on physical activity is warranted.

- Abstract
X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) sources coupled to high-power laser systems offer an avenue to study the structural dynamics of materials at extreme pressures and temperatures. The recent commissioning of the DiPOLE 100-X laser on the high energy density (HED) instrument at the European XFEL represents the state-of-the-art in combining x-ray diffraction with laser compression, allowing for compressed materials to be probed in unprecedented detail. Here, we report quantitative structural measurements of molten Sn compressed to 85(5) GPa and ∼ 3500 K. The capabilities of the HED instrument enable liquid density measurements with an uncertainty of ∼ 1 % at conditions which are extremely challenging to reach via static compression methods. We discuss best practices for conducting liquid diffraction dynamic compression experiments and the necessary intensity corrections which allow for accurate quantitative analysis. We also provide a polyimide ablation pressure vs input laser energy for the DiPOLE 100-X drive laser which will serve future users of the HED instrument.

Background: Exposure to mental health problems are becoming increasingly more frequent within physiotherapy. Physiotherapists recognize the need for a biopsychosocial approach, however their knowledge, assessment, and treatment skills specific to mental health problems requires further research. Purpose: To profile the level of education and perception of education that physiotherapists have acquired specific to mental health problems; and to profile an understanding of the current practice of physiotherapists specific to mental health problems. Methods: An online survey addressed the aims of the study and collected data from physiotherapists in Australia and New Zealand (open between 20th of October 2022 to the 20th of March 2023). Results: 139 respondents were included in the analysis. Physiotherapists had a perception that a significantly greater amount of coursework related to mental health needed to be included within their initial degree compared to what they received (mean difference of 20.0%, 95% CI: 17.5 to 22.5). This trend was evident irrespective of the degree level or the year of graduation. Higher perceived knowledge of anxiety (MD of 11.4, p = 0.001, ES: 0.5) and depression (MD of 11.8, p = 0.001, ES: 0.5) was evident in outpatient care physiotherapists. Lack of perceived knowledge is a reason for whether an assessment or treatment strategy is used with patients experiencing a mental health problem. Motivational interviewing and mindfulness were the most frequently used psychologically based techniques. Conclusion: This study reveals the need to increase the amount of mental health and psychologically based techniques within Physiotherapy curriculum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purse‐seine fishers using drifting fish aggregating devices (dFADs), mainly built with bamboo, plastic buoys, and plastic netting, to aggregate and catch tropical tuna, deploy 46,000–65,000 dFADs per year in the Pacific Ocean. Some of the major concerns associated with this widespread fishing device are potential entanglement of sea turtles and other marine fauna in dFAD netting; marine debris and pollution; and potential ecological damage via stranding on coral reefs, beaches, and other essential habitats for marine fauna. To assess and quantify the potential connectivity (number of dFADs deployed in an area and arriving in another area) between dFAD deployment areas and important oceanic or coastal habitat of critically endangered leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) and hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) sea turtles in the Pacific Ocean, we conducted passive‐drift Lagrangian experiments with simulated dFAD drift profiles and compared them with known important sea turtle areas. Up to 60% of dFADs from equatorial areas were arriving in essential sea turtle habitats. Connectivity was less when only areas where dFADs are currently deployed were used. Our simulations identified potential regions of dFAD interactions with migration and feeding habitats of the east Pacific leatherback turtle in the tropical southeastern Pacific Ocean; coastal habitats of leatherback and hawksbill in the western Pacific (e.g., archipelagic zones of Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Solomon Islands); and foraging habitat of leatherback in a large equatorial area south of Hawaii. Additional research is needed to estimate entanglements of sea turtles with dFADs at sea and to quantify the likely changes in connectivity and distribution of dFADs under new management measures, such as use of alternative nonentangling dFAD designs that biodegrade, or changes in deployment strategies, such as shifting locations. In the variety of not necessarily associative rings, we show that the sixty Bol-Moufang identities determine exactly thirteen subvarieties, and we determine all inclusions and necessary counterexamples. We make use of the concepts of magma rings and linear identities. The result is analogous to the classification of varieties of loops or quasigroups of Bol-Moufang type (Phillips, Vojtěchovský-2005) and was motivated by the study of tangent algebras to smooth loops of Bol-Moufang type (Mal'cev-1955, Sagle-1961, Nagy-1992, Bremner, Madariaga-2014). Porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) is the commonest of the porphyrias (Semin Liver Dis 1998;18:67). It often occurs secondary to an underlying internal disorder, has significant impacts on liver health and longevity, and is a treatable disease. Thus, for the clinician, recognising the disease to make the correct diagnosis, identifying causative underlying diseases, and treating the porphyria and its complications, are crucial. Although reviews on the management of PCT have been written, there have recently been significant advances in the understanding of the factors predisposing to the disease, and of its wider health impacts. Infectious and Congenital Syphilis rates continue to rise globally. Current recommendations for syphilis screening and treatment may be insufficient, and there is a pressing need for improved programs and services to address the increase in cases. A scoping review was conducted to examine approaches to maternal syphilis screening and treatment. Theoretical underpinnings and the key characteristics of these interventions were studied to identify gaps in the existing literature to guide future research. Developing a modified version of the socio-ecological model to guide data analysis, we included 33 academic studies spanning 31 years, covering a range of interventions, programs, and policies globally. We highlight key facets of interventions aligning with the five levels of the modified model that include: individual, interpersonal, institutional, community and policy. In this review, we provide valuable insights into the characteristics and principles of maternal syphilis screening and treatment interventions. Even with advances in care, there remain many similarities in interventions for the improved treatment and screening of maternal syphilis over the past 30 years. There is a need for meaningful research that engages community members in study and intervention development and considers the social determinants of health in the context of maternal syphilis care. Examining interventions in relation to the socio-ecological model may help guide policymakers, researchers, and clinicians in intervention development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

43. Community Preferences for the Care of Older People at the End of Life: How Important is the Disease Context?

BACKGROUND: Population preferences for care at the end of life can inform palliative care policy and direction. Research investigating preferences for care at the end of life has focused predominantly on the context of advanced cancer, with relatively little attention to other life-limiting illnesses that are common causes of death. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate preferences for the care of older people at the end of life in three different disease contexts. The purpose was to understand if population preferences for care in the last 3 weeks of life would differ for patients dying from cancer, heart failure or dementia. METHODS: Three discrete choice experiments were conducted in Australia with a general population sample using similar methods but different end-of-life disease contexts. Some attributes were common across the three experiments and others differed to accommodate the specific disease context. Each survey was completed by a different panel sample aged ≥45 years (cancer, n = 1548; dementia, n = 1549; heart failure, n = 1003). Analysis was by separate mixed logit models. RESULTS: The most important attributes across all three surveys were costs to the patient and family, patient symptoms and informal carer stress. The probability of choosing an alternative was lowest (0.18-0.29) when any one of these attributes was at the least favourable level, holding other attributes constant across alternatives. The cancer survey explored symptoms more specifically and found patient anxiety with a higher relative importance score than the symptom attribute of pain. Dementia was the only context where most respondents preferred to not have a medical intervention to prolong life; the probability of choosing an alternative with a feeding tube was 0.40 (95% confidence interval 0.36-0.43). - Abstract
Ice loss from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets currently contributes one third of global sea level rise, yet monitoring their complex coastal regions remains a challenge. One of the principal methods for determining ice sheet imbalance is satellite radar altimetry, which provides a 30-year record of surface elevation change. Over rugged coastal topography, however, the altimeter echo returned from the ice sheet surface is often complex, with multiple distinct surface reflections degrading the accuracy of elevation measurements. Here, we present a new processing approach, termed the MultiPeak Ice (MPI) reprocessing strategy. This method is designed specifically for complex ice surfaces, where the majority of ice mass imbalance occurs, and is able to reliably retrieve multiple elevation measurements from a single altimetry echo. We apply this new approach to Sentinel-3 non-interferometric delay-Doppler altimeter echoes acquired over the Greenland Ice Sheet and demonstrate its capability to improve both the accuracy and the quantity of elevation measurements. Through comparison with coincident airborne and satellite laser altimetry we show that our MPI processing increases the number of elevation measurements by 31%, reduces the mean biases observed in conventional Level-2 processing from 4.3 m to 0.6 m, and lowers the outlier percentage (from 15% to 2%). Our new approach has the potential to extend the operational capability of non-interferometric radar altimeters over complex glaciological targets and ultimately to improve estimates of ice sheet mass imbalance.
