Objectives: Staphylococcus aureus is a major cause of bloodstream infections. The recent epidemiological features and antimicrobial resistance trend were analyzed for methicillin-resistant and susceptible S. aureus (MRSA/MSSA) isolates from blood samples in northern Japan., Methods: S. aureus isolates from blood culture were screened by MALDI-TOF and genotyped by the schemes of MLST, coa, agr, spa, and SCCmec types. Antimicrobial resistance genes and virulence factors were detected by multiplex/uniplex PCR. Antimicrobial susceptibility was examined using a broth microdilution test., Results: A total of 301 isolates (163 MRSA and 138 MSSA) were isolated from bloodstream infections in 2023 (From Apr. to Dec.). The MRSA isolates were classified into three groups, i.e., CC1-SCCmec-IV (CC1-IV) (52%), CC5-II (36%), and CC8-IV (12%). The prevalence of CC1 was significantly higher than those in our previous studies (2017-2021). Four CC8-IVa isolates with PVL genes on ΦSa2usa were considered to be the USA300 clone (ST8/spa-t008/coa IIIa/agr I) or its variants that were genotyped as those closely related to ST8/t008 or lacking ACME. In contrast, MSSA was genetically highly divergent and classified into 22 STs, with CC1 (ST1, ST188) being the most common (25%). It was notable that 29 MSSA isolates (21%) were classified into livestock-associated (LA) genotypes, ST20, ST97, and CC398 (ST398, ST291). Genetic characterization of the CC398 isolates suggested that these belong to human-adapted MSSA clones., Conclusions: The present study revealed the increasing trend of CC1 MRSA surpassing CC5, and the emergence of MSSA representing human-adapted CC398, and LA types ST97 and ST20 from bloodstream infections in Japan., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare no conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2024. Pb-based perovskites play pivotal roles in ferroelectric research. In the search for new Pb-based ferroelectrics, we investigated the ferroelectric properties of Dion-Jacobson type CsPb 2 Nb 3 O 10 and exfoliated 2D nanosheets. Ferroelectricity in CsPb 2 Nb 3 O 10 was demonstrated for the first time. CsPb 2 Nb 3 O 10 adopted a polar tetragonal structure with a modest T C = 260 °C and polarization P S = 7.93 μC cm -2 ; the polarization mainly arose from the out-of-plane displacements of Nb 5+ ions and nearby oxygens. CsPb 2 Nb 3 O 10 layered perovskite offers additional advantages for tailoring ferroelectric nanomaterials, as exfoliated 2D nanosheets provide novel platforms for investigating ferroelectric properties down to the 2D limit. Piezoresponse force microscopy confirmed stable ferroelectricity even in exfoliated 2D Pb 2 Nb 3 O 10 nanosheets.

Acute lung injury (ALI) is characterized by hyperinflammation followed by vascular leakage and respiratory failure. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A is critical for capillary permeability; however, the role of VEGF receptor 1 (VEGFR1) signaling in ALI progression remains unclear. Here, we show that deletion of VEGFR1 tyrosine kinase (TK) signaling in mice exacerbates lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ALI as evidenced by excessive pro-inflammatory cytokine production and interleukin(IL)-1β-producing neutrophil recruitment to inflamed lung tissues. ALI development involves reduced alveolar macrophage (AM) levels and recruitment of monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs) in a VEGFR1 TK-dependent manner. VEGFR1 TK signaling reduced pro-inflammatory cytokine levels in cultured AMs. VEGFR1 TK-expressing MDMs displayed an anti-inflammatory macrophage phenotype. Additionally, the transplantation of VEGFR1 TK-expressing bone marrow (BM)-derived macrophages into VEGFR1 TK-deficient mice reduced lung inflammation. Treatment with placental growth factor (PlGF), an agonist for VEGFR1, protected the lung against LPS-induced ALI associated with increased MDMs. These results suggest that VEGFR1 TK signaling prevents LPS-induced ALI by suppressing the pro-inflammatory activity of AMs and enhancing the anti-inflammatory function of MDMs., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a life-threatening lung injury that induces cytokine hypersecretion. Receptor activity-modifying protein (RAMP) 1, a subunit of the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor, regulates the production of cytokines. This study examined the role of RAMP1 signaling during lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute lung injury (ALI). LPS administration to wild-type (WT) mice depleted alveolar macrophages (AMs) and recruited monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs) and neutrophils. RAMP1-deficient (RAMP1 -/- ) mice exhibited higher lung injury scores, cytokine levels, and cytokine-producing neutrophil infiltration. RAMP1-deficient AMs produced more cytokines in response to LPS than WT AMs. Adoptive transfer of RAMP1-deficient AMs to RAMP1 -/- mice increased cytokine levels and neutrophil accumulation compared to the transfer of WT AMs. RAMP1 -/- mice had reduced MDM recruitment and lower pro-inflammatory and reparative macrophage profiles. Cultured bone marrow (BM)-derived RAMP1-deficient macrophages stimulated with LPS showed decreased expression of pro-inflammatory and pro-repairing genes. CGRP administration to WT mice reduced cytokine production and neutrophil accumulation. These findings indicate that RAMP1 signaling mitigates LPS-induced ALI by inactivating AMs and promoting inflammatory and repair activities of MDMs. Targeting RAMP1 signaling presents a potential therapeutic approach for the treatment of ARDS.

Hetero-allenes such as isocyanates, isothiocyanates, and carbodiimides reacted with oxime having olefin moieties in the manner of hetero Cope-type hydroamination to generate N -modified nitrones, which underwent intramolecular cycloaddition to give intramolecular cycloadducts. Among them, the reaction of isocyanates with oximes proceeded at room temperature to provide the corresponding cycloadducts in very high yields. The efficiencies of these sequential cycloadditions were directly compared by competitive reactions. As a result, the order of reactivity to oxime 1a is isocyanate 2a , isothiocyanate 3a , and carbodiimide 6a . Theoretical studies were also conducted.

Thickness control of two-dimensional (2D) metal nanosheets (metallenes) has scientific significance for energy and catalyst applications, yet is unexplored owing to the lack of an efficient approach for the tailored synthesis of metallenes with controlled atomic layers. Here we report a 2D template-directed synthesis of ultrathin Pd nanosheets with well-controlled thicknesses. Molecularly thin single-crystalline Pd nanosheets with well-defined hexagonal morphologies were synthesized via a one-pot method with 2,4,6-trichlorophenyl formate. Such Pd nanosheets were used as hard templates for the tailored synthesis of the Pd nanosheets with controlled thicknesses (9, 11, 13, and 15 atomic layers). Hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations revealed unique electronic states in thickness-controlled Pd nanosheets; these states included reduced surface charges to bulk, increased work functions, and decreased d -band centers. Thus, atomic layer engineering of Pd nanosheets enabled the fine-tuning of the surface electronic states to improve the hydrogen evolution reaction.

Recent advances in "hybrid-improper" ferroelectricity in Dion-Jacobson (DJ)-type layered perovskites have caused renewed interest in the search for new ferroelectrics. Here, we present an approach for the tailored synthesis of a new homologous series of DJ-type layered perovskites Cs(Bi 2 Sr n -3 )(Ti n -1 Nb)O 3 n +1 . Starting from CsBi 2 Ti 2 NbO 10 ( n = 3), higher-order homologous phases with n = 4 and 5 were successfully synthesized by repeated solid-state calcination with SrTiO 3 . Characterizations by X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Raman scattering, and second harmonic generation showed the detailed structural features in Cs(Bi 2 Sr n -3 )(Ti n -1 Nb)O 3 n +1 , and the polar structures could be stabilized by proper or hybrid-improper ferroelectricity, depending on the odd or even number of the perovskite layers. Our results provide important insights into the competition between the different mechanisms and the consequences of the ferroelectric properties in homologous layered perovskites.

In 2D materials, a key engineering challenge is the mass production of large-area thin films without sacrificing their uniform 2D nature and unique properties. Here, it is demonstrated that a simple fluid phenomenon of water/alcohol solvents can become a sophisticated tool for self-assembly and designing organized structures of 2D nanosheets on a water surface. In situ, surface characterizations show that water/alcohol droplets of 2D nanosheets with cationic surfactants exhibit spontaneous spreading of large uniform monolayers within 10 s. Facile transfer of the monolayers onto solid or flexible substrates results in high-quality mono- and multilayer films with high coverages (>95%) and homogeneous electronic/optical properties. This spontaneous spreading is quite general and can be applied to various 2D nanosheets, including metal oxides, graphene oxide, h-BN, MoS 2 , and transition metal carbides, enabling on-demand smart manufacture of large-size (>4 inchϕ) 2D nanofilms and free-standing membranes., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

A 57-year-old man visited our hospital due to abnormal chest X-ray findings. Chest computed tomography(CT)showed amalgamated beaded solid nodules in the right upper lobe of the lung. Lobectomy of the right upper lobe was performed and the nodule was histologically determined to be seminoma. Positron emission tomography(PET)-CT showed high 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose(FDG)uptake in the lung nodules and faint uptake in the left testicle. As ultrasound and palpation detected no tumor in the testes, consent to perform orchiectomy was not obtained. Considering the PET-CT findings, we diagnosed testicular seminoma with solitary pulmonary metastasis, which is extremely rare.

As a member of 2D family, amorphous 2D nanosheets have received increasing attention due to their unique properties that are distinct from crystalline 2D nanosheets. However, compared with the vast library of crystalline 2D nanosheets, amorphous 2D nanosheets are still infancy due to the lack of an efficient synthetic approach. Here, we present a strategy that yields a library of 10 distinct amorphous 2D metal oxides/oxyhydroxides using solid-state surfactant crystals. A key feature of this process is a stepwise reaction using solid surfactant; the solid-state surfactant crystals have metal ions arranged in the interlayer space, and hydrolysis of the metal ions leads to the formation of isolated clusters in the surfactant crystals via limited condensation reactions. Immersing the surfactant crystals in formamide promotes nanosheet formation through the self-assembly of clusters by templating the morphologies of the crystals generated from surfactants crystals. Anti-human leukocyte antigen (HLA) antibodies other than those against HLA-A, -B, -C, and DRB1 are a risk factor for engraftment delay and failure, especially in cord blood transplantation (CBT). The primary objective of this study was to assess the impact of the presence of anti-HLA antibodies on CBT and to evaluate the utility of lymphocyte crossmatch testing or additional HLA-DP and -DQ typing of CB units in improving transplant outcomes. We retrospectively assessed the engraftment rates and transplant outcomes of 772 patients who underwent their first CBT at our hospital between 2012 and 2021. Donors were routinely typed for HLA-A, -B, -C, and-DRB1 alleles, and the anti-HLA antibodies of recipients were screened before donor selection in all cases. Among patients who had antibodies against other than HLA-A, -B, -C, and DRB1 (n = 58), lymphocyte crossmatch testing (n = 32) or additional HLA-DP/-DQ alleles typing of CB (n = 15) was performed to avoid the use of units with corresponding alleles. The median patient age was 57 years (16 to 77). Overall, 75.7% had a high-risk disease status at transplantation, 83.5% received myeloablative conditioning regimens, and >80% were heavily transfused. Two hundred twenty-nine of the 772 recipients (29.6%) were positive for anti-HLA antibodies. There were no statistical differences in the number of infused CD34-positive cells between the anti-HLA antibody-positive and the anti-HLA antibody-negative patients. Of the 229 patients with anti-HLA antibodies, 168 (73.3%) had antibodies against HLA-A, -B, -C, and-DRB1 (Group A), whereas 58 (25.3%) had antibodies against HLA-DP, HLA-DQ, or -DRB3/4/5 with or without antibodies against HLA-A, -B, -C, and -DRB1 (Group B). No patients in both Groups A and B exhibited donor-specific anti-HLA antibodies against HLA-A, -B, -C, and -DRB1. The neutrophil engraftment rate was lower in patients with anti-HLA antibodies than in those without antibodies (89.9% versus 94.1%), whereas nonrelapse mortality (NRM) before engraftment was higher in antibody-positive patients (9.6% versus 4.9%). In patients who received 2 or more HLA allele-mismatched CB in the host-versus-graft (HVG) direction (n = 685), the neutrophil engraftment rate was lower in the anti-HLA antibody-positive recipients than in the antibody-negative recipients with significant differences (88.8% versus 93.8%) (P = .049). Similarly, transplant outcomes were worse in the antibody-positive patients with respect to 2-year overall survival (OS) (43.1% versus 52.3%) and NRM (44.0% versus 30.7%) than in the antibody-negative patients. In contrast, the results of Group B were comparable to those of the antibody-negative patients, while those of Group A were statistically worse than the antibody-negative patients in terms of all engraftment rate (88.6%), OS (34.2%), and NRM (49.0%). The presence of anti-HLA antibodies negatively impacts engraftment, NRM, and OS in CBT. However, HLA-DP/-DQ allele typing of CB units or lymphocyte crossmatch testing could be a useful strategy to overcome poor engraftment rates and transplant outcomes, especially in patients with anti-HLA antibodies against HLA-DP, HLA-DQ, or -DRB3/4/5., (Copyright © 2024 The American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy. Background and Aims: We compared the safety and efficacy of bintrafusp alfa (BA) in combination with gemcitabine+cisplatin (GemCis), to those of GemCis alone, in patients with biliary tract cancer., Approach and Results: This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, adaptive design phase 2/3 trial (NCT04066491) included adults who are treatment-naive with locally advanced/metastatic biliary tract cancer. Patients (N = 297) were randomized to receive an IV infusion of BA (2400 mg once/3 wk) plus GemCis (gemcitabine 1000 mg/m 2 +cisplatin 25 mg/m 2 on days 1 and 8/3 wk; 8 cycles) (BA group, n = 148) or placebo+GemCis (placebo group, n = 149). The primary end point was overall survival (OS). For adaptation analysis (phase 2-phase 3; data cutoff: May 20, 2021), efficacy was assessed in the first 150 patients who were antibiotic-naive when 80 progression-free survival events had occurred and ≥ 19 weeks of follow-up had been completed (BA, n = 73; placebo, n = 77). Median OS (95% CI) for the BA (11.5 mo [9.3-not estimable]) and placebo (11.5 mo [10.0-not estimable]) groups was comparable (hazard ration 1.23 [95% CI 0.66-2.28]; p = 0.7394); OS data maturity was 27.2% (41 events/151 patients). The most common grade ≥3 treatment-related adverse event was anemia (BA, 26.0%; placebo, 22.8%). Bleeding adverse events were reported more frequently in the BA group (28.8%) versus the placebo group (7.4%). Deaths within 60 days of the first dose were reported in 7.5% and 1.3% of patients in the BA and placebo groups, respectively., Conclusions: BA+GemCis did not provide a clinically meaningful benefit compared with GemCis alone as first-line treatment for biliary tract cancer, and the study was discontinued early (terminated: August 20, 2021)., (Copyright © 2024 The Author(s). Objective: We decided to conduct a study based on these multidisciplinary team (MDT) in order to investigate their impact at the University Hospitals of Strasbourg and look for ways to improve this MDT., Methods: This is a retrospective study of the 682 patients presented to endometriosis MDT from its inception in March 2017 to December 2020., Results: The MDT decision was different from that initially proposed by the patient's referent for 406 patients (60%). Surgery was chosen for 417 patients (61%) and assisted reproduction for 261 patients (38%). A review of the MRI by a referring radiologist was carried out for 348 cases (51%), with a modification of the results for 255 patients (73%). Initial underestimation of lesions was noted in 198 cases., Conclusion: Our study has shown the importance of MDT in endometriosis since the therapeutic proposal was modified in 60% of cases. In addition, we supported the importance of radiologists specializing in this field since they made a modification in two-thirds of the MRIs reread. These results show the importance of collegial discussions, which can modify the decisions of medical teams. Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare, life-threatening disorder characterized by systemic hyperinflammation. Although allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) remains the only potentially curative treatment for primary and relapsed/refractory HLH, the optimal strategy has not been established. We retrospectively analyzed 56 adult patients (≥18 years) with primary and secondary HLH (mainly consisting of Epstein-Barr virus-associated HLH) who underwent allo-HSCT using the registry database of the Japanese Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy, including 26 patients who underwent cord blood transplantation (CBT). One-fourth of patients received myeloablative conditioning (MAC), mainly consisting of total body irradiation-based regimens. The 3-year overall survival (OS) was 40.6%, while the 3-year cumulative incidences of relapse and non-relapse mortality (NRM) were 19.8% and 39.6%, respectively. In univariable analysis, age at allo-HSCT (the 3-year OS: 27.5% for ≥ 25 years old vs 58.0% for < 25 years old, P = .025), conditioning intensity (7.1% for MAC vs 51.8% for reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC), P = .002), and donor source (26.0% for CBT vs 52.9% for bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (BMT/PBSCT), P = .030) were associated with significantly inferior OS. In multivariable analysis, older age at allo-HSCT (≥ 25 years old) (Hazard ratio [HR], 2.37; 95% CI, 1.01 to 5.58; P = .048), MAC (HR, 2.45; 95% CI, 1.09 to 5.53; P = .031), and CBT (HR, 2.21; 95% CI, 1.04 to 4.71; P = .040) were independently associated with worse OS. In addition, only conditioning intensity predicted higher NRM (the 3-year NRM: 78.6% for MAC vs 26.6% for RIC), while no factors were associated with the relapse rate. This study includes the largest number of adult HLH patients undergoing CBT. Although the use of CBT is acceptable, BMT/PBSCT are more favorable strategies in allo-HSCT in adult HLH. Objectives: Breast oncology genetics emerged almost 30 years ago with the discovery of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. The evolution of analytical practices has progressively allowed access to tests whose results now have a considerable impact on the management of both female and male breast cancers. The Sénologie commission of the Collège national des gynécologues et obstétriciens français (CNGOF) asked five specialists in breast surgery, oncology and oncological genetics to draw up a summary of the oncogenetic testing criteria used and the clinical implications for the female and male population of the test results, with or without an identified causal variant. In the case of proven genetic risk, surveillance, risk-reduction strategies, and the specificities of surgical and medical management (with PARP inhibitors in particular) were updated., Methods: This summary was based on national and international guidelines on the monitoring and therapeutic management of genetic risk, and a recent review of the literature covering the last five years., Results: Despite successive technical developments, the probability of identifying a causal variant in a situation suggestive of a predisposition to breast and ovarian cancer remains around 10% in France. The risk of breast cancer in women with a causal variant of the BRCA1, BRCA2, PALB2, TP53, CDH1 and PTEN genes is estimated at between 35% and 85% at age 70. The presence of a causal variant in one of these genes is the subject of different recommendations for men and women, concerning both surveillance, the age of onset and imaging modalities of which vary according to the genes involved, and risk-reduction surgery, which is possible for women as soon as their risk level exceeds 30% and remains exceptionally indicated for men. In the case of breast cancer, PARP inhibitors are a promising new class of treatment for BRCA germline mutations., Conclusion: A discipline resolutely focused on understanding molecular mechanisms, screening and preventive medicine/surgery, oncology genetics is currently also involved in new medical/surgical approaches, the long-term benefits/risks of which will need to be monitored., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Masson SAS. White-light emission with a single activator is an attractive function of phosphors. In this work, we investigated the photoluminescence properties of Ca 5.7 Y 1.3 Si 7 O 16.7 N 3.3 , which is a compound denoted as Ca 4+ x Y 3- x Si 7 O 15+ x N 5- x discovered by our group, with Ce-activation using optical measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Samples showed a tunable emission from purple to white under ultraviolet (UV) light. In this compound, Ca and Y as well as anions are distributed disorderly, and Ca/Y ions occupy two crystallographically distinct sites; those sites are possible sites for Ce substitution. DFT calculation and structural refinement revealed that the tunable emission was generated by Ce at the crystallographically equivalent site but with distinct local structures caused by the disordering of cations and anions. As far as we know, this is the first report about a white-light-emitting phosphor with only Ce activation.

As a member of the 2D materials family, 2D metal nanosheets (metallenes) have received increasing attention due to their intriguing properties distinct from those of graphene and other inorganic 2D nanosheets. However, the synthesis of metallenes is still challenging, owing to the lack of an efficient synthetic approach. Here we present a facile one-pot approach to the controlled synthesis of Pd nanosheets. A key feature of this process is a stepwise reaction using 2,4,6-trichlorophenyl formate (TCPF); TCPF emits carbon monoxide gas, which acts as both a reductant and a surface capping agent, promoting the anisotropic 2D growth of the Pd nanosheets. Photoemission spectroscopy revealed some peculiar features of the surface charge and valence band states due to suppressed electron transfer at the 2D surface. This surface state caused improved catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction compared to that of bulk Pd.

Here we report a comparative study on the bottom-up synthesis of multi-element hydroxides composed of Mg, Al, Fe and Zn cations to understand the role of solvents. Two common solvents, water and ethylene glycol, a typical polyol, are used. The polyol-derived MgAlFeZn-OH are nanosheets with homogeneous elemental distribution, while the hydrothermal-derived MgAlFeZn-OH are mixtures of plate-like hydroxide layers and rod-like spinel oxides. The coordinating properties and the high viscosity of the ethylene glycol provide the possibility to mediate the hydrolysis rates and to control the particle growth. The high specific surface area of the polyol-derived multi-element hydroxide nanosheets (352.4 m 2 g -1 ) guarantees them as excellent adsorbents for adsorbing anionic dyes in aqueous solution., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Prior studies demonstrated that gonadal differentiation in the rice field frog, Hoplobatrachus rugulosus, was of an undifferentiated type since all individuals had ovaries at complete metamorphosis. However, the steroidogenic potential of the gonad is still unknown. In this study, H. rugulosus were obtained by stimulating fertilization in the laboratory under natural light and temperature conditions. The gonads were collected and their steroidogenic potential was evaluated by determining the expression level of messenger RNA (mRNA) encoding for cytochrome P450 17-hydroxylase/C17-20 lyase (CYP17) and cytochrome P450 aromatase (CYP19) using quantitative real-time RT-PCR and the localization of CYP17 mRNA in tissues by in situ hybridization. The CYP17 mRNA levels in males at 4-11 weeks postmetamorphosis were higher than in female and intersex gonads. This corresponded to their localization in the gonadal tissues, where CYP17 signals were specifically detected in the Leydig cells of the testis at 5-16 weeks postmetamorphosis but was undetectable in all ovary samples. The CYP19 mRNA levels in females at 4-11 weeks postmetamorphosis was higher than in male and intersex gonads, which corresponded with gonadal development, indicating the potential steroidogenic function of the ovary. Based on the present results, the role of CYP17 and CYP19 mRNA in sex differentiation in H. rugulosus may occur after gonadal sex differentiation and the steroidogenic potential of the gonads exhibited a sexual dimorphic pattern. Several anti-cancer drugs are known to have immunomodulatory effects, including immunogenic cell death (ICD) of cancer cells. ICD is a form of apoptosis which is caused by the release of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), the uptake of cancer antigens by dendritic cells, and the activation of acquired immunity against cancer cells. ICD was originally reported in solid tumors, and there have been few reports on ICD in multiple myeloma (MM). Here, we showed that proteasome inhibitors, including carfilzomib, induce ICD in myeloma cells via an unfolded protein response pathway distinct from that in solid tumors. Additionally, we demonstrated the potential impact of ICD on the survival of patients with myeloma. ICD induced by proteasome inhibitors is expected to improve the prognosis of MM patients not only by its cytotoxic effects, but also by building strong immune memory response against MM cells in combination with other therapies, such as chimeric antigen receptor-T cell therapy.

A low-temperature Al 2 O 3 deposition process provides a simplified method to form a conductive two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the metal oxide/Al 2 O 3 heterointerface. However, the impact of key factors of the interface defects and cation interdiffusion on the interface is still not well understood. Furthermore, there is still a blank space in terms of applications that go beyond the understanding of the interface's electrical conductivity. In this work, we carried out a systematic experimental study by oxygen plasma pretreatment and thermal annealing post-treatment to study the impact of interface defects and cation interdiffusion at the In 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 interface on the electrical conductance, respectively. Combining the trends in electrical conductance with the structural characteristics, we found that building a sharp interface with a high concentration of interface defects provides a reliable approach to producing such a conductive interface. After applying this conductive interface as electrodes for fabricating a field-effect transistor (FET) device, we found that this interface electrode exhibited ultrastability in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), a commonly used biological saline solution. This study provides new insights into the formation of conductive 2DEGs at metal oxide/Al 2 O 3 interfaces and lays the foundation for further applications as electrodes in bioelectronic devices.

Monolayer ruthenate nanosheets obtained by exfoliating layered ruthenium oxide exhibit excellent electrical conductivity, redox activity, and catalytic activity, which render them suitable for advanced electronic and energy devices. However, to fully exploit the benefits, we require further structural insights into a complex polymorphic nature and diversity in relevant electronic states of two-dimensional (2D) ruthenate systems. In this study, the 2D structures, stability, and electronic states of 2D ruthenate are investigated on the basis of thermal and chemical phase engineering approaches. We reveal that contrary to a previous report, exfoliation of an oblique 1T phase precursor leads to nanosheets having an identical phase without exfoliation-induced phase transition to a 1H phase. The oblique 1T phase in the nanosheets is found to be metastable and, thus, transforms successively to a rectangular 1T phase upon heating. A phase-controllable synthesis via Co doping affords nanosheets with metastable rectangular and thermally stable hexagonal 1T phases at a Co content of 5-10 and 20 at%, respectively. The 1T phases show metallic electronic states, where the d-d optical transitions between the Ru 4d (t 2g ) orbital depend on the symmetry of the Ru framework. The Co doping in ruthenate nanosheets unexpectedly suppresses the redox and catalytic activities under acidic conditions. In contrast, the Co 2+/3+ redox pair is activated and produces conductive nanosheets with high electrochemical capacitance in an alkaline condition.

Estrogen receptors (ERs) were known as estrogen-activated transcription factors and function as major reproduction regulators in vertebrates. The presence of er genes had been reported in Molluscan cephalopods and gastropods. However, they were considered as constitutive activators with unknown biological functions since reporter assays for these ERs did not show a specific response to estrogens. In this study, we tried characterization of ER orthologues from the Yesso scallop, Patinopecten yessoensis, in which estrogens had been proven to be produced in the gonads and involved in the spermatogenesis and vitellogenesis. Identified ER and estrogen related receptor (ERR) of Yesso scallops, designated as py-ER and py-ERR, conserved specific domain structures for a nuclear receptor. Their DNA binding domains showed high similarities to those of vertebrate ER orthologues, while ligand binding domains had low similarities with them. Both the py-er and py-err expression levels decreased in the ovary at the mature stage while py-vitellogenin expression increased in the ovary by quantitative real-time RT-PCR. Also, the py-er and py-err showed higher expressions in the testis than ovary during the developing and mature period, suggesting both genes might function in the spermatogenesis and testis development. The py-ER showed binding affinities to vertebrate estradiol-17β (E 2 ). However, the intensity was weaker than the vertebrate ER, indicating scallops might exist endogenous estrogens with a different structure. On the other hand, the binding property of py-ERR to E 2 was not confirmed in this assay, speculating that py-ERR was a constitutive activator as other vertebrate ERRs. Further, the py-er was localized in the spermatogonia in the testis and in the auxiliary cells in the ovary by in situ hybridization, indicating its potential roles in promoting spermatogenesis and vitellogenesis. Taken together, the present study demonstrated that py-ER was an authentic E 2 receptor in the Yesso scallop and might have functions for the spermatogonia proliferation and vitellogenesis, while py-ERR was involved in the reproduction by undiscovered manners., Competing Interests: Conflict of Interest None declared., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Ltd. The occurrence of superconductivity in proximity to various strongly correlated phases of matter has drawn extensive focus on their normal state properties, to develop an understanding of the state from which superconductivity emerges 1-4 . The recent finding of superconductivity in layered nickelates raises similar interests 5-8 . However, transport measurements of doped infinite-layer nickelate thin films have been hampered by materials limitations of these metastable compounds: in particular, a high density of extended defects 9-11 . Here, by moving to a substrate (LaAlO 3 ) 0.3 (Sr 2 TaAlO 6 ) 0.7 that better stabilizes the growth and reduction conditions, we can synthesize the doping series of Nd 1-x Sr x NiO 2 essentially free from extended defects. In their absence, the normal state resistivity shows a low-temperature upturn in the underdoped regime, linear behaviour near optimal doping and quadratic temperature dependence for overdoping. This is phenomenologically similar to the copper oxides 2,12 despite key distinctions-namely, the absence of an insulating parent compound 5,6,9,10 , multiband electronic structure 13,14 and a Mott-Hubbard orbital alignment rather than the charge-transfer insulator of the copper oxides 15,16 . We further observe an enhancement of superconductivity, both in terms of transition temperature and range of doping. These results indicate a convergence in the electronic properties of both superconducting families as the scale of disorder in the nickelates is reduced., (© 2023. Thermal shielding materials that can block near-infrared (NIR) light from the sunlight while maintaining visible transparency have become increasingly important from an energy-saving perspective. Here, we demonstrate a gigantic NIR shielding by an engineered plasmonic material based on a two-dimensional (2D) polytungstate (Cs 4- x W 11 O 35- d ). Starting from a charge-neutral polytungstate (Cs 4 W 11 O 35 ), we synthesize charge-imbalanced 2D nanosheets (Cs 4- x W 11 O 35- d ) that undergo an unusual structural change with the semiconductor-to-metal transition in a reduced atmosphere. Layer-by-layer engineering of the 2D nanosheets enables a plasmon-induced enhancement of the NIR reflectance (>53%) with a high visible transparency (>71%), realizing high-performance thermal shielding. Our approach offers a solution for future thermal management technology.

Recent progress in 2D materials has initiated new fields of molecularly thin amorphous materials with mysterious properties and structures. However, designed synthesis of molecularly thin amorphous silica still remains a challenge; whether free-standing molecularly thin amorphous silica nanosheets can exist is unclear. Here, this issue is addressed by using a new chemical protocol; solid-state surfactant lamellae with ordered alkyl-chain arrangements can serve as superior templates guiding free-standing amorphous silica nanosheets. Simple sonication of the lamellar hybrids allows exfoliation into monolayer amorphous silica nanosheets with 0.9 nm thickness. In addition, the nanosheets show the distinctive feature of high colloidal stability that enables atomic layer engineering of silica nanocoatings and dielectric nanofilms. Bivalve hemocytes have pivotal role as cellular biodefense. However, no information is available for cytological parameters, marker gene and function of the hemocytes in Yesso scallop, a commercially important aquaculture species worldwide. Due to their extremely strong cell aggregation ability, the scallop hemocytes were not able to assess as a single cell so far. In the present study, we established methodologies for studying the hemocytes of Yesso scallop, assessed cell morphology, measured seasonal fluctuation, and analyzed transcriptomes and cellular behavior during the immune response. Our results showed that the Yesso scallop possesses a single type of leukocyte-type hemocytes similar to other bivalve granulocytes circulating at an average of 1 × 10 7  cells/ml throughout the year. In addition, we identified five molecular marker genes specific to the scallop hemocytes. These hemocyte markers enabled us to precisely detect the hemocyte localization. Using these markers, we confirmed that tissue transplantation can experimentally induce an immune response, leading to the mobilization of circulating hemocytes for encapsulation. The search for superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates was motivated by analogy to the cuprates, and this perspective has framed much of the initial consideration of this material. However, a growing number of studies have highlighted the involvement of rare-earth orbitals; in that context, the consequences of varying the rare-earth element in the superconducting nickelates have been much debated. Here, we show notable differences in the magnitude and anisotropy of the superconducting upper critical field across the La-, Pr-, and Nd-nickelates. These distinctions originate from the 4 f electron characteristics of the rare-earth ions in the lattice: They are absent for La 3+ , nonmagnetic for the Pr 3+ singlet ground state, and magnetic for the Nd 3+ Kramer's doublet. The unique polar and azimuthal angle-dependent magnetoresistance found in the Nd-nickelates can be understood to arise from the magnetic contribution of the Nd 3+ 4 f moments. Such robust and tunable superconductivity suggests potential in future high-field applications.

We report on the layer-dependent stability of muscovite-type two-dimensional (2D) mica nanosheets (KAl 3 Si 3 O 10 (OH) 2 ). First-principles calculations on mica nanosheets with different layer thicknesses (n = 1, 2, and 3) reveal their layer-dependent stability; odd-numbered 2D mica nanosheets are more stable than even-numbered ones, and the preferable stability of odd-numbered layers originates from electronic effects. A core-shielding model is proposed with a reasonable assumption, successfully proving the instability of the even-numbered mica nanosheets. Raman imaging supports that the population of odd-numbered mica nanosheets is predominant in exfoliated mica products. The alternating charge states with odd/even layers were evidenced by Kelvin probe force microscopy. Dielectric capacitors have greater power densities than batteries, and, unlike batteries, they do not utilize chemical reactions during cycling. Thus, they can become ideal, safe energy storage devices. However, dielectric capacitors yield rather low energy densities compared with other energy storage devices such as batteries and supercapacitors. Here, we present a rational approach for designing ultrahigh energy storage capacitors using two-dimensional (2D) high-κ dielectric perovskites (Ca 2 Na m -3 Nb m O 3 m +1 ; m = 3-6). Individual Ca 2 Na m -3 Nb m O 3 m +1 nanosheets exhibit an ultrahigh dielectric strength (638-1195 MV m -1 ) even in the monolayer form, which exceeds those of conventional dielectric materials. Multilayer stacked nanosheet capacitors exhibit ultrahigh energy densities (174-272 J cm -3 ), high efficiencies (>90%), excellent reliability (>10 7 cycles), and temperature stability (-50-300 °C); the maximum energy density is much higher than those of conventional dielectric materials and even comparable to those of lithium-ion batteries. Enhancing the energy density may make dielectric capacitors more competitive with batteries.

The effective application of 2D materials is strongly dependent on the mass production of high-quality large-area 2D thin films. Here, we demonstrate a strategy for the automated manufacturing of high-quality 2D thin films using a modified drop-casting approach. Our approach is simple; by using an automated pipette, a dilute aqueous suspension is dropped onto a substrate heated on a hotplate, and controlled convection by Marangoni flow and liquid removal causes the nanosheets to come together to form a tile-like monolayer film in 1-2 min. Ti 0.87 O 2 nanosheets are utilized as a model system for investigating the control parameters such as concentrations, suction speeds, and substrate temperatures. We perform the automated one-drop assembly of a range of 2D nanosheets (metal oxides, graphene oxide, and hexagonal boron nitride) and successfully fabricate various functional thin films in multilayered, heterostructured, and sub-micrometer-thick forms. Our deposition method enables on-demand large-size (>2 inchϕ) manufacturing of high-quality 2D thin films while reducing the time and sample consumption.

Nickel-based superconductors provide a long-awaited experimental platform to explore possible cuprate-like superconductivity. Despite similar crystal structure and d electron filling, however, superconductivity in nickelates has thus far only been stabilized in thin-film geometry, raising questions about the polar interface between substrate and thin film. Here we conduct a detailed experimental and theoretical study of the prototypical interface between Nd 1-x Sr x NiO 2 and SrTiO 3 . Atomic-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy in the scanning transmission electron microscope reveals the formation of a single intermediate Nd(Ti,Ni)O 3 layer. Density functional theory calculations with a Hubbard U term show how the observed structure alleviates the polar discontinuity. We explore the effects of oxygen occupancy, hole doping and cation structure to disentangle the contributions of each for reducing interface charge density. Resolving the non-trivial interface structure will be instructive for future synthesis of nickelate films on other substrates and in vertical heterostructures., (© 2023. The Jahn-Teller effect, in which electronic configurations with energetically degenerate orbitals induce lattice distortions to lift this degeneracy, has a key role in many symmetry-lowering crystal deformations 1 . Lattices of Jahn-Teller ions can induce a cooperative distortion, as exemplified by LaMnO 3 (refs. 2,3 ). Although many examples occur in octahedrally 4 or tetrahedrally 5 coordinated transition metal oxides due to their high orbital degeneracy, this effect has yet to be manifested for square-planar anion coordination, as found in infinite-layer copper 6,7 , nickel 8,9 , iron 10,11 and manganese oxides 12 . Here we synthesize single-crystal CaCoO 2 thin films by topotactic reduction of the brownmillerite CaCoO 2.5 phase. We observe a markedly distorted infinite-layer structure, with ångström-scale displacements of the cations from their high-symmetry positions. This can be understood to originate from the Jahn-Teller degeneracy of the d xz and d yz orbitals in the d 7 electronic configuration along with substantial ligand-transition metal mixing. A complex pattern of distortions arises in a [Formula: see text] tetragonal supercell, reflecting the competition between an ordered Jahn-Teller effect on the CoO 2 sublattice and the geometric frustration of the associated displacements of the Ca sublattice, which are strongly coupled in the absence of apical oxygen. As a result of this competition, the CaCoO 2 structure forms an extended two-in-two-out type of Co distortion following 'ice rules' 13 ., (© 2023. Desired electrode patterning on two-dimensional (2D) materials is a foremost step for realizing the full potentials of 2D materials in electronic devices. Here, we introduce an approach for damage-free, on-demand manufacturing of 2D material devices using light-emitting diode (LED) lithography. The advantage of this method lies in mild photolithography by simply combining an ordinary optical microscope with a commercially available LED projector; the low-energy red component is utilized for optical characterization and alignment of devices, whereas the high-energy blue component is utilized for photoresist exposure and development of personal computer designed electrode patterns. This method offers maskless, damage-free photolithography, which is particularly suitable for 2D materials that are sensitive to conventional lithography. We applied this LED lithography to device fabrication of selected nanosheets (MoS 2 , graphene oxides and RuO 2 ), and achieved damage-free lithography of various patterned electrodes with feature sizes as small as 1-2 μm. Understanding gene functions in marine invertebrates has been limited, largely due to the lack of suitable assay systems. Such a system requires investigative methods that are reproducible and can be quantitatively evaluated, such as a cell line, and a strong promoter that can drive high expression of a transgene. In this study, we established primary cell culture from a marine bivalve mollusc, Mizuhopecten yessoensis . Using scallop primary cells, we optimized electroporation conditions for transfection and carried out a luciferase-based promoter activity assay to identify strong promoter sequences that can drive expression of a gene of interest. We evaluated potential promoter sequences from genes of endogenous and exogenous origin and discovered a strong viral promoter derived from a bivalve-infectious virus, ostreid herpesvirus-1 (OsHV-1). This promoter, we termed OsHV-1 promoter, showed 24.7-fold and 16.1-fold higher activity than the cytomegalovirus immediate early (CMV IE) promoter and the endogenous EF1α promoter, the two most commonly used promoters in bivalves so far. Our GFP assays showed that the OsHV-1 promoter is active not only in scallop cells but also in HEK293 cells and zebrafish embryos. The OsHV-1 promoter practically enables functional analysis of marine molluscan genes, which can contribute to unveiling gene-regulatory networks underlying astonishing regeneration, adaptation, reproduction, and aging in marine invertebrates.

Purpose: Bintrafusp alfa (BA) is a bifunctional fusion protein composed of the extracellular domain of the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) receptor II fused to a human immunoglobulin G1 antibody blocking programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1). The recommended phase 2 dose (RP2D) was selected based on phase 1 efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetic (PK)-pharmacodynamic data, assuming continuous inhibition of PD-L1 and TGF-β is required. Here, we describe a model-informed dose modification approach for risk management of BA-associated bleeding adverse events (AEs)., Methods: The PK and AE data from studies NCT02517398, NCT02699515, NCT03840915, and NCT04246489 (n = 936) were used. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to evaluate potential relationships between bleeding AEs and BA time-averaged concentration (C avg ), derived using a population PK model. The percentage of patients with trough concentrations associated with PD-L1 or TGF-β inhibition across various dosing regimens was derived., Results: The probability of bleeding AEs increased with increasing C avg ; 50% dose reduction was chosen based on the integration of modeling and clinical considerations. The resulting AE management guidance to investigators regarding temporary or permanent treatment discontinuation was further refined with recommendations on restarting at RP2D or at 50% dose, depending on the grade and type of bleeding (tumoral versus nontumoral) and investigator assessment of risk of additional bleeding., Conclusion: A pragmatic model-informed approach for management of bleeding AEs was implemented in ongoing clinical trials of BA. The assembly of the surfactants has been utilized as unique templates for the controlled synthesis of metal nanosheets. However, current strategies for metal nanosheets have mainly focused on the liquid-phase surfactant assembly. Herein, we found the solid-state surfactants as designable crystals suitable for nanostructural control and proposed a novel synthetic route for molecularly thin Pt metal nanosheets using solid surfactant crystals as a precursor. The 2D surfactant crystals containing planarly arranged Pt complexes were prepared, and the subsequent UV-ozone treatment and reduction process allowed us to obtain Pt metal nanosheets. Pt metal nanosheets had a distinct morphology with various thicknesses (from 1.5 nm to 3.0 nm), characteristic of 2D surfactant crystals.

Study Objective: To describe the anatomy of the nerves during a laparoscopic retroperitoneal para-aortic lymphadenectomy with prioritization of their preservation., Design: Demonstration of a nerve-preserving para-aortic lymphadenectomy., Setting: A 65-year-old woman with no significant medical history underwent diagnostic laparoscopy for evaluation of a right ovarian mass. In the absence of peritoneal carcinomatosis, bilateral adnexectomy wasperformed with pathology revealing a high-grade tubo-ovarian serous carcinoma. In accordance with French Guidelines for management of ovarian cancer, operative staging including pelvic and para-aortic lymphadenectomy was recommended [1]. Final pathology following staging surgery was consistent with stage IA high-grade serous ovarian cancer prompting administration of adjuvant chemotherapy postoperatively., Interventions: We performed a lumbo-aortic lymphadenectomy with preservation of the following nerves: the superior hypogastric plexus, the lumbar splanchnic nerves and the sympathetic trunk., Conclusion: Although there are conflicting data as to the benefit of staging lymphadenectomy in women with presumed early stage high-grade serous ovarian cancer, current French Guidelines recommend its performance. When doing so, effort should be made to avoid injury to adjacent normal structures, and in doing so, minimize potential morbidity. The neural structures preserved in this case are part of the sympathetic contingent and participate in the innervation of the abdomen and pelvic viscera. The sympathetic contingent is responsible for the vasomotricity but is also involved in the contraction of the internal genitalia during orgasm and in the inhibition of the peristaltic contractions of the rectum. As such, its preservation may avoid certain postoperative complaints.
