Resumo Objetivo Investigar como os estágios do ciclo de vida organizacional influenciam a probabilidade de violação dos covenants financeiros. Referencial teórico Empresas em diferentes estágios do ciclo de vida organizacional têm diferentes incentivos para se posicionar em termos de lucratividade, investimento, distribuição de dividendos, crescimento de vendas, endividamento, planejamento estratégico, divulgação de informações e qualidade dos lucros, bem como aqueles fatores que estão diretamente relacionados à inclusão e violação de covenants financeiros nos contratos de dívida. Metodologia Foram utilizadas 1.328 observações de 197 empresas brasileiras não financeiras listadas na B3 no período de 2010 a 2018. Os dados contábeis foram coletados do banco de dados Economatica e as informações sobre covenants financeiros foram obtidas por meio da análise de mais de 2.400 notas explicativas societárias. Regressões logísticas foram usadas para analisar os resultados com os dados organizados por ano. Resultados Os resultados demonstram que as empresas maduras são menos propensas a violar um limite estipulado por um covenant financeiro em um contrato de dívida do que empresas em outros estágios, ou seja, os estágios de introdução, crescimento, turbulência ou declínio. Implicações práticas e sociais da pesquisa Em termos regulatórios, os resultados apresentados reforçam a necessidade de revisão do CPC 26 (R1), tornando obrigatória a publicação dos limites de covenants nas notas explicativas societárias. Contribuições Esses resultados complementam a literatura ao apresentar evidências de que não são apenas as fases de turbulência e declínio que apresentam riscos operacionais que podem culminar em aumento da probabilidade de violação de covenants financeiros, e que as fases inicial e de crescimento também apresentam riscos. Abstract Purpose To investigate how the stages of the organizational life cycle influence the probability of violation of financial covenants. Theoretical framework Companies in different stages of the organizational life cycle present different incentives when assuming a position regarding profitability, investment, dividend distribution, the evolution of sales, indebtedness, strategic planning, information disclosure, and earnings quality, and these factors are directly related with the inclusion and violation of financial covenants in debt contracts. Design/methodology/approach We used 1,328 observations of 197 non-financial Brazilian companies listed on the B3 in the period from 2010 to 2018. The accounting data were collected from the Economatica database and the financial covenant information was obtained from analyzing more than 2,400 company footnotes. To analyze the results, we used logistic regressions with year-controlled data. Findings The results highlight that companies in the maturity stage present a lower probability of violating some limit stipulated in the financial covenants in their debt contracts than companies in the other stages, that is, introduction, growth, turbulence, or decline. Practical & social implications of research In regulatory terms, the results presented further reinforce the need to revise CPC 26 (R1), making it obligatory to disclose the limits of restrictive clauses in explanatory notes for corporations. Originality/value These results extend the literature by presenting evidence that it is not only the turbulence and decline phases that cause operational risks that can culminate in an increased probability of violation of financial covenants, but also the initial introduction and growth phases of companies.

In this region, bacterial canker of the grapevine, caused by Xanthomonas citri pv. viticola, is one of the main plant bacteriosis that threatens this crop. To achieve effective disease management, it is essential to understand the pathogenesis mechanisms of the bacterium, the plant-pathogen interaction, and how the environment affects the pathogen and the disease. In this context, understanding the dynamics of bacterial growth and the influence of temperature on the physio-pathological behavior of bacteria becomes essential to prevent the spread of the pathogen and create efficient strategies for managing the disease. Thus, the present work evaluated the ability to form viable but non-culturable cells (VBNC) and the physio-pathological behavior of X. citri pv. viticola under temperature stress. The CCRMXCV17, CCRMXCV80 and CCRMXCV117 strains had their growth curves determined, the logarithmic phase being observed at 96 h for all strains, while the death phase was observed at 480 h for the CCRMXCV17 strain and 288 h for the other two strains. With qPCR analysis, the occurrence of VBNC state was confirmed at 480 h for the strain CCRMXCV17 and 288 h for CCRMXCV80 and CCRMXCV117. The incubation period (IP) and the final severity (FS) of the artificial inoculation of the strains in the logarithmic and VBNC phases, did not obtain a significant interaction (P>0.05) between the phase and isolate factors, however, there was a significant difference in the IP between the means of the strain factor. All strains were resuscitated at the VBNC stage after inoculation in NYD medium. However, only the strain CCRMXCV117 showed a significant difference between the concentrations of the exponential and VBNC phases. The strains were cultivated at temperatures 29, 33, 37, 41, and 45 ºC and inoculated in grapevine seedlings to determine the epidemiological components of bacterial canker and were evaluated for in vitro biofilm formation and influence of swarming motility. The inoculation of strains cultivated under temperature stress showed a significant interaction between the factors, strain and temperature, only for the FS parameter. Weak biofilm matrix formation was observed in all strains, with a significant interaction between the factors, temperature and strain. Swarming motility under temperature stress was not detected in all three stains, since the colony growth was restricted to the center of the plate, however, there was a significant difference between the means of the factors evaluated individually. This is the first report of the occurrence of VBNC condition in strains of X. citri pv. viticola, as well as the pathogenic capacity at this stage. Thus, we emphasize the importance of applying a set of techniques for more accurate detection of this disease, as well as the continuous research of other characteristics, beyond biofilm and motility, that may influence the mechanisms of pathogenicity. A região Nordeste destaca-se como a maior produtora de uvas finas de mesa, correspondendo a 99% das exportações brasileira da fruta. Nesta região, o cancro bacteriano da videira, causado por Xanthomonas citri pv. viticola, é uma das principais fitobacterioses que ameaçam esta cultura. Para alcançar um manejo efetivo da doença, é fundamental compreender os mecanismos de patogênese da bactéria, a interação planta-patógeno e como o ambiente afeta o patógeno e a doença. Nesse contexto, o entendimento da dinâmica de crescimento bacteriano e da influência da temperatura no comportamento fisiopatológico das bactérias se torna essencial para evitar a disseminação do patógeno e criar de estratégias eficientes de manejo da doença. Assim, o presente trabalho avaliou a capacidade de formação de células viáveis, mas não cultiváveis (VBNC) e o comportamento fisiopatológico de X. citri pv. viticola sob estresse térmico. Os isolados CCRMXCV17, CCRMXCV80 e CCRMXCV117 tiveram suas curvas de crescimento determinadas, sendo a fase logarítmica observada às 96 h para todos os isolados, enquanto foi observada fase de morte às 480 h para o isolado CCRMXCV17 e 288 h para os outros dois isolados. Com a análise de qPCR, foi confirmado a ocorrência do estado de VBNC a partir das 480 h para o isolado CCRMXCV17 e 288 h para CCRMXCV80 e CCRMXCV117. O período de incubação (PI) e a severidade final (SF) da inoculação artificial dos isolados nas fases logarítmica e VBNC, não obtiveram interação significativa (P>0.05) entre os fatores fase e isolado, entretanto houve diferença significativa no PI entre as médias do fator isolado. Todos os isolados ressuscitaram após a inoculação na fase de VBNC em meio NYD. No entanto, apenas o isolado CCRMXCV117 apresentou diferença significativa entre as concentrações das fases exponencial e VBNC. Os isolados foram cultivados nas temperaturas 29, 33, 37, 41 e 45 ºC e inoculados em mudas de videira para determinação dos componentes epidemiológicos do cancro bacteriano e avaliados quanto a formação de biofilmes in vitro e influência da motilidade swarming. A inoculação dos isolados cultivados sob estresse térmico apresentou interação significativa entre os fatores isolados e as temperaturas somente para o parâmetro SF. Foi observada fraca formação da matriz de biofilme em todos os isolados, com interação significativa entre os fatores temperatura e isolado. A motilidade swarming sob estresse térmico não foi detectada nos três isolados pois o crescimento da colônia restringiu-se ao centro da placa, entretanto houve diferença significativa entre as médias dos fatores avaliados individualmente. Este é o primeiro relato da ocorrência da condição de VBNC em isolados de X. citri pv. viticola, bem como da capacidade patogênica nesta fase. Desta forma, ressalta-se a importância da aplicação de um conjunto de técnicas para a detecção mais precisa desta doença, bem como a pesquisa contínua de outras características, além do biofilme e da motilidade, que possam influenciar nos mecanismos de patogenicidade.
