Abstract Unprecedented efforts are being deployed to develop hydrogen production from bioresources in a circular economy approach, yet their implementation remains scarce. Today’s Challenges are associated with the shortage in the value chain, lack of large-scale production infrastructure, high costs, and low efficiency of current solutions. Herein, we report a hydrogen production route from cellulose pulp, integrating biomass fractionation and gasification in a biorefinery approach. Softwood sawdust undergoes formic acid organosolv treatment to extract cellulose, followed by steam gasification. High-purity hydrogen-rich syngas at a concentration of 56.3 vol% and a yield of 40 gH2/kgcellulose was produced. Char gasification offers the advantage of producing free-tar syngas reducing cleaning costs and mitigating downstream issues. A comprehensive assessment of mass and energy balance along the hydrogen value chain revealed an efficiency of 26.5% for hydrogen production, with an energy requirement of 111.1 kWh/kgH2. Optimizing solvent recovery and valorization of other constituents as added-value products in a biorefinery approach would further improve the process and entice its industrial takeoff.

Abstract A recent study has shown that highly crystalline graphene-based materials can be obtained from poorly organized carbon precursors using calcium as a non-conventional catalyst. XRD and TEM analyses of calcium-impregnated cellulose and lignin biochars showed the formation of well-ordered graphenic structures (Lc > 7 nm, d002 2000 °C). Herein, we propose new insights on the mechanism controlling the formation of highly graphenic biochars using Ca as a catalyst. We postulate that the calcium-catalyzed graphenization occurs through the formation of a metastable calcium carbide by reaction between CaO particles and amorphous carbon between 1000 and 1200 °C. CaC2 decomposes into calcium vapor and a graphenic shell covering the CaC2 particles as confirmed by TEM analysis. The thickness and planarity of the graphenic shell increase with the CaC2 initial particle size (between 20 and 200 nm), and its growth is controlled by the diffusion of the calcium vapor through the graphene layer. Abstract Pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass (hard carbon) produces poorly graphitic biochar. In this study, nano-structured biochars were produced from microcrystalline cellulose using calcium as a non-conventional catalyst. Calcium is abundant, environmental-friendly and widely accessible. Graphitization of calcium-impregnated cellulose was carried out at 1800 °C, a temperature below 2000 °C where the graphitization usually occurs. XRD, Raman spectroscopy, high-resolution TEM together with the in-house numerical tool developed enable the quantification of the graphene fringes in the biochars. The non-impregnated cellulose biochar was composed of short and poorly stacked graphene fringes. The impregnation with 2 wt.% of calcium led to the conversion of the initial structure into a well-organized and less defective graphene-like one. The graphene-like structures obtained were composed of tens of stacked graphene fringes with a crystallite size up to 20 nm and an average interlayer spacing equal to 0.345 nm, close to the reference value of standard hexagonal graphite (0.3354 nm). The increase of the calcium concentration did not significantly improve the crystallite sizes of the graphene-like materials but rather drastically improved their rate. Our results propose a mechanism and provide new insights on the synthesis of graphene-like materials from bio-feedstocks using calcium where the literature is focused on transition metals such as iron and nickel among others. The decrease of the graphitization temperature below 2000 °C should lower the production cost as well as the environmental impact of the thermal graphene-like materials synthesis using biomass. This finding should stimulate further research in the field and broaden the application perspectives.

Fired clay ceramics are promising materials for TES, thanks to their thermal stability, availability worldwide, low cost and easy shaping and handling. However, their thermo-physical and thermo-mechanical properties have to be improved. For the first time, clay-phosphate ceramics, with synthetic calcium hydroxyapatite (TCP, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) as additive, were developed in view of TES application. A parametric study was carried out for different clay/TCP mixtures, wherein the TCP percentage varies from 0 to 16.7 wt%. The best material containing 4.7 wt% TCP allowed increasing up to 20% of the thermal conductivity and 23% of the mechanical strength. Moreover, it was thermally stable up to 1000 °C. These original results demonstrate the suitability of these new materials for heat storage in energy systems such as in a concentrated solar power (CSP) plant, or in a unit of heat recovery from an industrial waste heat source.

This work aims to understand the mechanisms occurring during the microstructural transformation of clay-based mixtures. For that, the combination of various standard and advanced characterization techniques was used. This original approach allowed an outstanding description of complex mechanisms involved during the firing, bringing new insights in regards to the state-of-the-art. Thus, the formation of viscous glassy phases and the associated effects in terms of densification acceleration were particularly revealed by following the damping of Acoustic Resonance (AR) signals and by dynamic high-temperature Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Further STEM-EDX (Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy Coupled with Energy Dispersive X-ray) analyses revealed that the glassy phase resulting from the solidification of the viscous phase is predominantly composed of silicon, aluminum, oxygen, and potassium. This study also evidenced that the behavior of a binary clay-based mixture was not always described by a mixing law model.

For optimum methanization of cotton residues, four (4) samples were made up in vases, with cotton residues as the main component. The first sample consisted of 30g of cotton residue and 270 ml of inoculum, the second of 30g of cotton residue, 270 ml of inoculum and 0.1g of sodium, the third of 15 g of cotton residue, 270 ml of inoculum and 15g of cow dung, and the fourth of 15g of cotton residue, 270 ml of inoculum, 15g of cow dung and 0.1g of sodium. It took 75 days to digest the 30 g of organic matter contained in each sample. The results of this study showed that the sample 4, made up of cotton residue, inoculum, cow dung and sodium, gave the highest biogas volume (1.068 m3), methane volume (0.66 m3) and methane content in the biogas (89%). The best conditions for optimal biogas production from cotton residues are those of a combination of cotton residues, inoculum, cow dung and sodium ash. The results of this study provide knowledge for choosing the optimum conditions for the methanization of organic matter from agricultural waste. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Structural properties of carbonized cellulose were explored to conjugate the outcomes from various characterization techniques, namely X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. All these techniques have evidenced the formation of graphene stacks with a size distribution. Cellulose carbonized at 1000 and 1800 °C at a heating rate of 2 °C/min showed meaningful differences in Raman spectroscopy, whereas in XRD, the differences were not well pronounced, which implies that the crystallite sizes calculated by each technique have different significations. In the XRD patterns, the origin of a specific feature at a low scattering angle commonly reported in the literature but poorly explained so far, was identified. The different approaches used in this study were congruous in explaining the observations that were made on the cellulose-derived carbon samples. The remnants of the basic structural unit (BSU) are developed during primary carbonization. Small graphene-based crystallites inherited from the BSUs, which formerly developed during primary carbonization, were found to coexist with larger ones. Even if the three techniques give information on the average size of graphenic domains, they do not see the same characteristics of the domains; hence, they are not identical, nor contradictory but complementary. The arguments developed in the work to explain which characteristics are deduced from the signal obtained by each of the three characterization techniques relate to physics phenomena; hence, they are quite general and, therefore, are valid for all kind of graphenic materials.
