Biographical features like social and economic status, ethnicity, sexuality, care roles, and gender unfairly disadvantage individuals within academia. Authorship patterns should reflect the social dimension behind the publishing process and co-authorship dynamics. To detect potential gender biases in the authorship of papers and examine the extent of women's contribution in terms of the substantial volume of scientific production in Ecology, we surveyed papers from the top-ranked journal Ecology from 1999 to 2021. We developed a Women's Contribution Index (WCI) to measure gender-based individual contributions. Considering gender, allocation in the author list, and the total number of authors, the WCI calculates the sum of each woman's contribution per paper. We compared the WCI with women's expected contributions in a non-gender-biased scenario. Overall, women account for 30% of authors of Ecology, yet their contribution to papers is higher than expected by chance (i.e., over-contribution). Additionally, by comparing the WCI with an equivalent Men's Contribution Index, we found that women consistently have higher contributions compared to men. We also observed a temporal trend of increasing women's authorship and mixed-gender papers. This suggests some progress in addressing gender bias in the field of ecology. However, we emphasize the need for a better understanding of the pattern of over-contribution, which may partially stem from the phenomenon of over-compensation. In this context, women might need to outperform men to be perceived and evaluated as equals. The WCI provides a valuable tool for quantifying individual contributions and understanding gender biases in academic publishing. Moreover, the index could be customized to suit the specific question of interest. It serves to uncover a previously non-quantified type of bias (over-contribution) that, we argue, is the response to the inequitable structure of the scientific system, leading to differences in the roles of individuals within a scientific publishing team. Based on a diverse Late-Holocene (1889–1743 cal yrs BP) small mammal assemblage (14 species, 204 individuals) resulting from the trophic activity of owls, we reconstruct the paleoenvironmental conditions of Las Chacritas area, Catamarca Province, northwestern Argentina. Twenty modern and one additional Late-Holocene samples from the region were used as comparative parameters in the paleoenvironmental reconstruction. Through direct comparison with a present-day assemblage from Las Chacritas, and using Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling, spatial and temporal beta diversity (employing the Sorensen dissimilarity index), and the temporal beta diversity index (TBI) including all the small mammal samples, we quantitatively reconstruct the relationships among modern and Late-Holocene assemblages. Direct comparison showed significant differences, with relative abundances changing markedly over time, with several species of the Late-Holocene assemblage absent in the modern sample whereas many species frequent in the modern community absent in the Late-Holocene. NMDS analysis associated the Late-Holocene assemblage with modern samples of western drier environments. Beta diversity was low for presence-absence and moderate for abundance data, with higher contribution of turnover than nestedness, although for abundance data the proportion of nestedness was higher. TBI showed high variation among both Holocene sites and their present-day counterparts, whereas species gains dominated in modern samples. Our results suggest that the habitats surrounding Las Chacritas have modified markedly since the Late-Holocene. Presence of species today frequent in arid environments and absence of forest-dwelling species suggest that open, dry and relatively rocky habitats characterized this area in that interval. The structural proteins of coronaviruses portray critical information to address issues of classification, assembly constraints, and evolutionary pathways involving host shifts. Wecompiled 173 complete protein sequences from isolates belonging to the four genera of the subfamily Coronavirinae. We calculate a single matrix of viral distance as a linear combination of protein distances. The minimum spanning tree (MST) connecting the individuals captures the structure of their similarities. The MST re-capitulates the known phylogeny of Coronovirinae. Hosts were mapped onto the MST and we found a non-trivial concordance between host phylogeny and viral proteomic distance. We also study the chimerism in our dataset through computational simulations. We found evidence that structural units coming from loosely related hosts hardly give rise to feasible chimeras in nature. Phyllotis Waterhouse 1837 is one of the most studied genera of South American cricetid rodents. As currently understood, it includes 20 small to medium‐sized species of predominantly rocky habitats. Among them, populations of the yellow‐rumped leaf‐eared mouse, traditionally referred to P. xanthopygus (Waterhouse 1837), are the most widely distributed, extending from central Peru to southern Chile and Argentina. Based mostly on molecular evidence, previous studies suggested that P. xanthopygus constitutes a species complex, being characterized by geographically structured and genetically divergent clades. In this work, we compare the molecular phylogenetic hypothesis for populations distributed on the eastern slopes of the central Andes with morphometric evidence using univariate and multivariate analyses. Quantitative morphological and molecular evidence suggests that at least four nearly cryptic species of the P. xanthopygus complex occur from southern Bolivia to west‐central Argentina. Three of these taxa have available names; one of them, P. caprinus, is currently recognized to the species level; the other two, the clades of P. x. posticalis‐P. x. rupestris and P. vaccarum, are both recognized as subspecies of P. xanthopygus. The remaining taxon represents a new species distributed in the west‐central Andes of Argentina. We discuss our morphological results in the light of other sources of evidence (e.g. qualitative and quantitative state characters, genetic and phylogenetic studies, and cytogenetic data) and name the new species as P. pehuenche, honouring the original native people that historically inhabited west‐central Andes of Argentina. Rodentia has a high species number and chromosomal variability. The South American genus Akodon is one of the most speciose muroids, with more than 40 species included in several species groups. Here, we characterize cytogenetically specimens of Akodon from central-western Argentina. Subsequently, we reviewed and analyzed the cytogenetic data for this genus, build a phylogeny and mapped chromosome changes to interpret its evolution. Specimens of A. dolores from central-western Argentina have 2n=42-44/FNa=44 (46, 48) due to a Robertsonian rearrangement. Our data expand the distribution range known for this polymorphism and confirm its geographic structure. Other specimens had 2n=40/FNa=40, representing populations of A. oenos, A. polopi, and A. spegazzinii. All karyotypes have a low amount of heterochromatin, concentrated in centromeres and sex chromosomes, as in other rodents. The complement with 2n=40/FNa=40 is the most frequent in Akodon and is shared by most species in some groups. Chromosome numbers are very diverse. The FNa shows less variability; FNa=42 was recovered as ancestral, excluding A. mimus, which was connected at the base of the Akodon tree and has FNa=44. This indicates a complex chromosome evolution in Akodon, and suggests that reductions and increases in the 2n and FNa evolved independently in some lineages.
