Abstract

Acute inflammation is the body's first defense in response to pathogens or injury that is partially governed by a novel genus of endogenous lipid mediators that orchestrate the resolution of inflammation, coined specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs). SPMs, derived from omega-3-polyunstaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), include the eicosapentaenoic acid-derived and docosahexaenoic acid-derived Resolvins, Protectins, and Maresins. Herein, we review their biosynthesis, structural characteristics, and therapeutic effectiveness in various diseases such as ischemia, viral infections, periodontitis, neuroinflammatory diseases, cystic fibrosis, lung inflammation, herpes virus, and cancer, especially focusing on therapeutic effectiveness in respiratory inflammation and ischemia-related injuries. Resolvins are sub-nanomolar potent agonists that accelerate the resolution of inflammation by reducing excessive neutrophil infiltration, stimulating macrophage functions including phagocytosis, efferocytosis, and tissue repair. In addition to regulating neutrophils and macrophages, Resolvins control dendritic cell migration and T cell responses, and they also reduce the pro-inflammatory cytokines, proliferation, and metastasis of cancer cells. Importantly, several lines of evidence have demonstrated that Resolvins reduce tumor progression in melanoma, oral squamous cell carcinoma, lung cancer, and liver cancer. In addition, Resolvins enhance tumor cell debris clearance by macrophages in the tumor's microenvironment. Resolvins, with their unique stereochemical structure, receptors, and biosynthetic pathways, provide a novel therapeutical approach to activating resolution mechanisms during cancer progression. Abstract

John Ashbery is a domestic poet. He recognizes that the home contains and organizes a plurality of objects, but also a plurality of thoughts, experiences, and social roles. The domesticity of Ashbery's poetry materializes many of the contradictory abstractions of modern life, and gives them a place, even if their relationship with each other remains obscure. His poetic homes are microcosms of America, macrocosms of the mind, and material languages. The suburban home is defined in opposition to everything chaotic, decentred, and unstable: rapidly advancing technology, the cyclical renewals of nature, a carnivorous economy, the expanse of air and sky. Paradoxically, the home depends on these opposing forces, even incorporating them into itself, because for Ashbery the domestic is the conscious frame within which things are understood. Abstract

Lancelot Andrewes constructed visually intense scenes and symbolic images to capture his auditors’ interest, but he never let them forget that his visual enargia was rooted in the words of scripture and had no reality outside that given by God’s Word. His strategy was, therefore, not only to make Christ’s presence concrete and accessible to his listeners, but also to hint at how God will always be out of reach, a truth that cannot be seen. In exploring this rhetorical strategy, I focus especially on Andrewes’s 1604 Good Friday sermon, 1620 Easter sermon, and 1620 consecration rite. The two sermons were delivered at opposite ends of Andrewes’s career in James’s court, but both are notable for their intense scrutiny of what it means to see Christ in the eyes of the mind, body, and soul., Lancelot Andrewes convoquait des scènes très évocatrices d’un point de vue visuel et des images sym­boliques pour capter l’attention de son auditoire ; il ne laissait pas pour autant celui-ci oublier que cette enargia était enracinée dans les mots du texte sacré, et qu’elle n’avait par conséquent aucune réalité en dehors de la réalité communiquée par la Parole de Dieu. Ainsi, sa stratégie consistait non seulement à rendre la présence du Christ concrète et accessible à ses auditeurs, mais encore à laisser entendre que Dieu serait toujours hors de portée, à la manière d’une vérité qui ne peut être vue. Afin d’explorer cette stratégie rhétorique, je me concentre en particulier sur le sermon du Vendredi saint de 1604, sur le sermon de Pâques de 1620 et sur le rite de consécration de 1620. Ces sermons ont été prononcés au début et à la fin de la carrière d’Andrewes à la cour de James I, mais tous deux se distinguent par leur examen approfondi de ce que signifie voir le Christ à travers les yeux de l’esprit, du corps et de l’âme.

Abstract

The extant research on Procedural Justice (PJ) theory has consistently tested its normative underpinnings (i.e. trust in police fairness) against instrumental competing frameworks (i.e. trust in police effectiveness) in influencing public confidence in policing (PCP) and cooperation with the police (CP). This literature also points out the relevant role that public perceptions of police legitimacy play in mediating those relationships. If people trust that the police are fair and effective, they are more likely to perceive them as legitimate. In turn, police legitimacy could elicit PCP and CP. However, this evidence has been largely produced in consolidated democracies, where crime and social disadvantage are lower than in Mexico. The limited evidence for Mexico suggests that ‘trust in police effectiveness’ might be just as influential as ‘trust in police fairness’. This thesis draws on data from the Monterrey Metropolitan Area (MMA) and employed mix-methods for analysing the contribution of both aspects of trust and police legitimacy, while accounting for the concentration of crime and social disadvantage across Neighbourhood Areas. The results lend support to PJ claims, since ‘trust in police fairness‘ is a more important antecedent of ‘police legitimacy’ than ‘trust in police effectiveness’. The combined effect of the normative aspect of trust and ‘police legitimacy’ is also considerably stronger than that of the latter with the instrumental aspect of trust in enhancing PCP and CP. Moreover, the joined influence of ‘trust in police fairness’ and police legitimacy seems to mitigate the negative influence of neighbourhood characteristics on the outcome variables. These findings have important implications for the mix of policing strategies in the MMA –currently in conflict– such as establishing close relationships with the citizens. A closer relationship could help the police fight crime more effectively. The results also strongly suggest that the residents living in the most vulnerable conditions could benefit the most from fair and legitimate police behaviour.
