Objectives: The purpose is to study how the perception of home training has changed through data comparison before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, to find out the changes in people’s perception of home training, which has become a new sports culture, to provide basic data and to suggest directions on how research using big data can be used in the sports field.Methods: In order to compare before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, text mining analysis was conducted by setting keywords as home training in Naver and Daum by setting from February 1, 2020 to November 30, 2020, when the first COVID-19 confirmed patient in Korea came out, and from February 1, 2019, to November 30, 2019.Results: As a result of CONCOR analysis between words related to home training, a total of 16 clusters were formed, eight each, including smart home training, YouTube, and health programs before COVID-19, and eight each, including smart home training, YouTube, and home training exercise equipment and types.Conclusions: This study can be used as a tool to understand the market status, trends, and directions of interest by grasping the public’s perception and status of home training.

Background and Objectives The purpose of this study was to examine the benefits of ultrasonography performed by a surgeon rather than a radiologist.Subjects and Method This retrospective study enrolled 122 cases of ultrasonography performed by a head and neck surgeon and 116 cases of the same examination performed by a radiologist before surgery. The time intervals between the first visit and surgery were compared in both groups.Results The average waiting time for surgery after the first hospital visit was significantly reduced when a surgeon performed the ultrasound examination. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in sampling inadequacy rate on thyroid fine needle aspiration (FNA) between FNA performed by a head and neck surgeon and a radiologist.Conclusion Surgeons can utilize ultrasound as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool in an office-based setting. For patients, diagnosis and treatment provided by a single doctor will lead to more efficient outcomes.

Benign cartilaginous tumors, known as chondrogenic tumors, show cartilage components in the microscopic diagnosis. We present two clinical cases with cartilaginous tumors of the toes showing distinctive clinical manifestations. Two juvenile patients visited our outpatient clinic due to tumors with toenail deformities. A 10-year-old girl presented with a palpable mass with a nail deformity on the left third toe. The initial pathology report was soft tissue chondroma until complete resection. Another 15-year-old male patient visited the dermatology department with a toenail deformity and underwent a punch biopsy. The pathology report was fibrosis with myxoid degeneration. Excisional biopsies were performed for both patients. In the operative field, we observed exophytic tumors connected to the distal phalangeal bones. The final pathology reports were subungual osteochondroma on both patients. The specimen exhibited mature bone trabeculae with a focal cartilaginous cap. Benign cartilaginous tumors have a slow, progressive course and do not show significant symptoms. However, tumors in subungual areas are accompanied by toenail deformities and they can cause pain. Their clinical characteristics lead to a delayed diagnosis. Surgeons can be confused between soft tissue and chondrogenic tumors. When they conduct physical examinations, these categories should be considered in the differential diagnosis.

Recapitulating inherent heterogeneity and complex microarchitectures within confined print volumes for developing implantable constructs that could maintain their structure in vivo has remained challenging. Here, we present a combinational multimaterial and embedded bioprinting approach to fabricate complex tissue constructs that can be implanted postprinting and retain their three-dimensional (3D) shape in vivo. The microfluidics-based single nozzle printhead with computer-controlled pneumatic pressure valves enables laminar flow-based voxelation of up to seven individual bioinks with rapid switching between various bioinks that can solve alignment issues generated during switching multiple nozzles. To improve the spatial organization of various bioinks, printing fidelity with the z-direction, and printing speed, self-healing and biodegradable colloidal gels as support baths are introduced to build complex geometries. Furthermore, the colloidal gels provide suitable microenvironments like native extracellular matrices (ECMs) for achieving cell growths and fast host cell invasion via interconnected microporous networks in vitro and in vivo. Multicompartment microfibers (i.e., solid, core-shell, or donut shape), composed of two different bioink fractions with various lengths or their intravolume space filled by two, four, and six bioink fractions, are successfully printed in the ECM-like support bath. We also print various acellular complex geometries such as pyramids, spirals, and perfusable branched/linear vessels. Successful fabrication of vascularized liver and skeletal muscle tissue constructs show albumin secretion and bundled muscle mimic fibers, respectively. The interconnected microporous networks of colloidal gels result in maintaining printed complex geometries while enabling rapid cell infiltration, in vivo.

The choice of implant used for primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) may have an impact on clinical outcomes. Clinical outcomes after TKA with gradually reducing radius implants (group G) vs single-radius implants (group S) were evaluated among Asian patients. This study included 541 patients (754 knees) in group G and 187 patients (275 knees) in group S. Range of motion (ROM), flexion contracture, American Knee Society Knee and American Knee Society Function scores (KSKS and KSFS, respectively), and mechanical and anatomic tibiofemoral angles (MTFA and ATFA, respectively) were evaluated with electronic medical records. In univariate analysis, improvements in ROM, KSKS, and KSFS were significantly better in group G compared with group S at 1-year follow-up. Evaluating lower extremity alignment using full-leg plain radiographs is an essential step in diagnosis and treatment of patients with knee osteoarthritis. The study objective was to present a deep learning-based anatomical landmark recognition and angle measurement model, using full-leg radiographs, and validate its performance.A total of 11,212 full-leg plain radiographs were used to create the model. To train the data, 15 anatomical landmarks were marked by two orthopaedic surgeons. Mechanical lateral distal femoral angle (mLDFA), medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA), joint line convergence angle (JLCA), and hip-knee-ankle angle (HKAA) were then measured. For inter-observer reliability, the inter-observer intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was evaluated by comparing measurements from the model, surgeons, and students, to ground truth measurements annotated by an orthopaedic specialist with 14 years of experience. To evaluate test-retest reliability, all measurements were made twice by each measurer. Intra-observer ICCs were then derived. Performance evaluation metrics used in previous studies were also derived for direct comparison of the model's performance.Inter-observer ICCs for all angles of the model were 0.98 or higher (p 0.001). Intra-observer ICCs for all angles were 1.00, which was higher than that of the orthopaedic specialist (0.97-1.00). Measurements made by the model showed no significant systemic variation. Except for JLCA, angles were precisely measured with absolute error averages under 0.52 degrees and proportion of outliers under 4.26%.The deep learning model is capable of evaluating lower extremity alignment with performance as accurate as an orthopaedic specialist with 14 years of experience.III, retrospective cohort study.

The aim of this study was to develop a green method to fabricate a novel CS modified N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)- methacrylamide conjugate (CSNHMA) and to evaluate its biomedical potential. CSNHMA has been prepared by a simple method via aza Michael addition reaction between CS and N- (4-hydroxyphenyl)-methacrylamide (NHMA) in ethanol. Its structural and morphological properties were characterized by various analysis techniques. The obtained results confirmed that a highly porous network structure of CSNHMA was successfully synthesized via aza Michael addition reaction. Consequently, it was analyzed as a drug and gene carrier. CSNHMA/pGL3 showed an enhanced buffering capacity due to the presence of NHMA moiety leading to higher transfection efficiency in all cancer cells (A549, HeLa and HepG2) as compared to native CS and Lipofectamine®. Therefore, these findings clearly support the possibility of using CSNHMA as a good transfection agent. For in vitro drug release study, we prepared CSNHMA nanoparticles (NPs) and curcumin loaded CSNHMA NPs of size230 nm respectively via the non-toxic ionic gelation route and the encapsulation efficiency of drug was found to be 77.03%. In vitro drug release studies demonstrated a faster and sustained release of curcumin loaded CSNHMA NPs at pH 5.0 compared to physiological pH.

The human facial skeleton consists of multiple segments and causes difficulty during analytic processes. We developed image analysis software to quantify the amount of injury and validate the smooth curvature of the surface after facial bone reduction surgery. Three-dimensional computed tomography images of facial bone were obtained from 40 patients who had undergone open reduction surgery to treat unilateral zygomaticomaxillary fractures. Analytic software was developed based on the discrete curvature of a triangular mesh model. The discrete curvature values were compared before and after surgery using two regions of interest. For the inferior orbital rim, the weighted average of curvature changed from 0.543 ± 0.034 to 0.458 ± 0.042. Background and Objectives Follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) is the second common thyroid cancer which comprises about 10% of differentiated thyroid carcinoma. Hurthle cell carcinoma (HCC) is a relatively rare disease that has been classified as a subtype of FTC. However, there have been insufficient reports about these two similar thyroid cancers in South Korea due to low incidences. This study aims to present clinical features and evaluate prognostic factors of FTC and HCC.Subjects and Method We reviewed data of 189 FTC and 12 HCC patients who underwent surgery in our center from January 2000 to December 2020. Variables such as clinical characteristics, surgical method, pathologic result, post-operative treatment, survival rate and prognostic factors were included in our study.Results As for age, 67.2% of patients in FTC group and 33.3% of patients in HCC group were older than 55 years-old (p=0.017). The average tumor sizes of FTC and HCC were 2.98 and 3.1 cm, respectively. The 10-year overall survival rates of FTC and HCC were 96.5% and 100%, respectively. Background We sought to determine (1) the success rate of debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR) for acute periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) of the knee in patients with acute postsurgical infection and in those with acute hematogenous infection via a multicenter study, (2) the factors related to the failure of DAIR for overall acute PJI and acute hematogenous PJI via subgroup analysis, and (3) whether the PJI recurrence patterns differed between the two groups over time after DAIR. Methods This retrospective multicenter study included 101 acute knee PJI. Acute postsurgical PJI was defined as PJI diagnosed Results The overall success rate of DAIR was 77%. The success rate tended to be higher in the postsurgical group than in the hematogenous group (p = 0.060). However, there was no significant factor related to DAIR failure in the subgroup analysis of acute hematogenous PJIs. In the postsurgical group, the recurrence of PJI occurred until 3 months, whereas in the hematogenous group, recurrence occurred for up to 2 years. Conclusions The failure rate tended to be higher in the acute hematogenous PJI group than in the acute postsurgical PJI group. Since acute hematogenous infections may recur for a longer period than postsurgical infections, careful follow-up is required after DAIR.

Sarcopenia, an age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, is correlated with adverse outcomes after some surgeries. Here, we present a deep-learning-based model for automatic muscle segmentation and quantification of full-leg plain radiographs. We illustrated the potential of the model to predict sarcopenia in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA). A U-Net-based deep learning model for automatic muscle segmentation was developed, trained and validated on the plain radiographs of 227 healthy volunteers. The radiographs of 403 patients scheduled for primary TKA were reviewed to test the developed model and explore its potential to predict sarcopenia. The proposed deep learning model achieved mean IoU values of 0.959 (95% CI 0.959–0.960) and 0.926 (95% CI 0.920–0.931) in the training set and test set, respectively. The fivefold AUC value of the sarcopenia classification model was 0.988 (95% CI 0.986–0.989). Of seven key predictors included in the model, the predicted muscle volume (PMV) was the most important of these features in the decision process. In the preoperative clinical setting, wherein laboratory tests and radiographic imaging are available, the proposed deep-learning-based model can be used to screen for sarcopenia in patients with knee osteoarthritis undergoing TKA with high sarcopenia screening performance.

Purpose The aim of this study was to compare the following three analgesic methods after Total knee arthroplasty (TKA): intravenous patient-controlled analgesia (IV-PCA), continuous adductor canal block (C-ACB), and intravenous patient-controlled analgesia combined with single shot adductor canal block (PCA + sACB). Methods Records of 482 patients undergoing primary TKA from September 2019 to September 2020 were analyzed. Patients were divided into three pain control groups: IV-PCA (n = 180), C-ACB (n = 173) and PCA + sACB (n = 129). Single shot adductor canal block was performed 24 h after surgery in the PCA + sACB group. Rescue opioid consumption, breakthrough pain, pain numerical rating scale (NRS), and anti-emetics administration were measured from postoperative day (POD) 1 to POD 5. Results Rescue opioid consumption was less in C-ACB or PCA + sACB group than in the IV-PCA group at POD1 (p p = 0.002, respectively). Patients in C-ACB and PCA + sACB groups had less breakthrough pain (NRS > 5) than the IV-PCA group at POD1 (p = 0.007). On POD2, C-ACB was statistically superior to IV-PCA (p = 0.011) in terms of breakthrough pain. Postoperative pain NRS was lower in the C-ACB and PCA + sACB groups than in the IV-PCA group (p = 0.025 and p = 0.019, respectively). The total number of anti-emetics consumption was lower in C-ACB and PCA + sACB groups than in the IV-PCA group (p = 0.003 and p = 0.002, respectively). Conclusion PCA + sACB not only reduced patients’ need for rescue opioids, but also decreased the number of breakthrough pain and anti-emetics compared to IV-PCA in early postoperative days after TKA. However, C-ACB and PCA + sACB did not differ significantly in analgesic efficacy or opioid-related side effects. PCA + sACB can be as effective as C-ACB for patients undergoing TKA. Eyebrows define one's facial appearance; brow ptosis, which can occur with aging, can convey a negative expression. Various methods have been used to correct eyebrow position and shape. We endeavored to repair brow ptosis and glabellar wrinkles and present the outcome.This retrospective study reviewed 40 patients who underwent extended suprabrow lift accompanied by relief of glabellar wrinkles between January 2018 and August 2020. The procedure was considered when patients exhibited brow ptosis, glabellar wrinkles, and a wide forehead. Fat graft was implemented after glabellar muscle division. The results were assessed based on measurements performed preoperatively and at 6 and 18 months postoperatively.Overall, patients were satisfied with the outcomes. To assess glabellar wrinkles, the Modified Fitzpatrick Wrinkle Assessment score revealed adequate correction during neutral and furrowed gazes (P 0.05). The forehead and brow heights were also analyzed after repair, exhibiting decreased forehead height and elevated brow position (P 0.05). At 6 and 18 months after surgery, adequate maintenance of the repair was evident (P 0.05). A visible scar was observed in two patients, which was managed using a fractional ablative laser procedure.Extended suprabrow lift, when based on preoperative measurements, led to the correction of brow ptosis, glabellar wrinkles, and a wide forehead. For periorbital rejuvenation, it is imperative to decide locations where the skin and soft tissues should be preserved or removed. Meniscus horizontal tears are usually degenerative. It could be asymptomatic and unrelated to knee symptoms. Therefore, there are controversies regarding treatment choices. The aim of this study was to evaluate factors that affect the results of non-surgical and surgical treatments for meniscus horizontal tears. We retrospectively studied 159 patients with meniscus horizontal tears with a minimum 2-year follow-up period. Patients were treated non-surgically or arthroscopically. The treatment results were dichotomized into success and failure. The factors considered were age, sex, joint line tenderness, mechanical symptoms, widest tear gap width on sagittal MRI, cartilage lesion grade, discoid meniscus, tear site, and joint alignment. Joint alignment and cartilage lesion grade were the factors that significantly influenced non-surgical treatment results. The widest tear gap width and cartilage lesion grade significantly affected arthroscopic surgery results. The mechanical symptoms did not show any significant relationship with either treatment result. In treating patients with meniscus horizontal tears, patients with varus alignment and advanced cartilage lesions should be informed of possible poor outcomes with non-surgical treatment. If the patient has a wide tear gap or minimal cartilage lesion, arthroscopic surgery would be a good treatment choice. The mechanical symptom was not an adequate factor for arthroscopic surgery.

Background Sarcopenia, an age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, is correlated with adverse outcomes after some surgeries. This study examined the characteristics of sarcopenic patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA), and identified low muscle mass as an independent risk factor for postoperative TKA complications. Methods A retrospective cohort study examined 452 patients who underwent TKA. The skeletal muscle index (SMI) was obtained via bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), along with demographics, the Charlson Comorbidity Index, and medication, laboratory and operative data for 2018–2021. Patients were categorized into normal (n = 417) and sarcopenic (n = 35) groups using the SMI cut-off suggested by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 (males, 2; females, 2). Three postoperative complications were analysed: blood transfusion, delirium, and acute kidney injury (AKI). Baseline characteristics were propensity score-matched to address potential bias and confounding factors. Results The proportion of sarcopenic patients in primary TKA was 7.7% (35/452). The sarcopenic group had a lower preoperative haemoglobin (12.18 ± 1.20 vs. 13.04 ± 1.73 g/dL, p = 0.004) and total protein (6.73 ± 0.42 vs. 7.06 ± 0.44 mg/dL, p = 0.001). Propensity scoring matching and logistic regression showed that more patients in the sarcopenic group received postoperative blood transfusions (OR = 6.60, 95% CI: 1.57–45.5, p = 0.021); there was no significant difference in AKI or delirium. Univariate receiver operating characteristic curve analysis of the propensity-matched group, to determine the predictive value of SMI for postoperative transfusion, gave an AUC of 0.797 (0.633–0.96) and SMI cut-off of 5.6 kg/m2. Conclusions Low muscle mass determined by BIA was an independent risk factor for postoperative transfusion in TKA. Multifrequency BIA can serve as a screening tool for sarcopenia that may influence the orthopaedic decision-making process or treatment planning in patients with sarcopenia undergoing primary TKA. In this retrospective study, 10,000 anteroposterior (AP) radiography of the knee from a single institution was used to create medical data set that are more balanced and cheaper to create. Two types of convolutional networks were used, deep convolutional GAN (DCGAN) and Style GAN Adaptive Discriminator Augmentation (StyleGAN2-ADA). To verify the quality of generated images from StyleGAN2-ADA compared to real ones, the Visual Turing test was conducted by two computer vision experts, two orthopedic surgeons, and a musculoskeletal radiologist. For quantitative analysis, the Fréchet inception distance (FID), and principal component analysis (PCA) were used. Generated images reproduced the features of osteophytes, joint space narrowing, and sclerosis. Classification accuracy of the experts was 34%, 43%, 44%, 57%, and 50%. FID between the generated images and real ones was 2.96, which is significantly smaller than another medical data set (BreCaHAD = 15.1). PCA showed that no significant difference existed between the PCs of the real and generated images (p 0.05). At least 2000 images were required to make reliable images optimally. By performing PCA in latent space, we were able to control the desired PC that show a progression of arthritis. Using a GAN, we were able to generate knee X-ray images that accurately reflected the characteristics of the arthritis progression stage, which neither human experts nor artificial intelligence could discern apart from the real images. In summary, our research opens up the potential to adopt a generative model to synthesize realistic anonymous images that can also solve data scarcity and class inequalities.

Neural network models have been used to analyze thyroid ultrasound (US) images and stratify malignancy risk of the thyroid nodules. We investigated the optimal neural network condition for thyroid US image analysis. We compared scratch and transfer learning models, performed stress tests in 10% increments, and compared the performance of three threshold values. All validation results indicated superiority of the transfer learning model over the scratch model. Stress test indicated that training the algorithm using 3902 images (70%) resulted in a performance which was similar to the full dataset (5575). Threshold 0.3 yielded high sensitivity (1% false negative) and low specificity (72% false positive), while 0.7 gave low sensitivity (22% false negative) and high specificity (23% false positive). Here we showed that transfer learning was more effective than scratch learning in terms of area under curve, sensitivity, specificity and negative/positive predictive value, that about 3900 images were minimally required to demonstrate an acceptable performance, and that algorithm performance can be customized according to the population characteristics by adjusting threshold value.

Purpose. Accurately measuring an angle on a lower extremity X-ray is essential for the diagnosis and treatment of knee osteoarthritis (KOA). However, the angle is often affected by position, especially with flexion contracture and rotation. To date, there have been no quantitative analyses examining the relationship between lower extremity angle and patient position and no studies targeting patients with deformities. The aim of this study is to quantify the effect of position on angle measurements in lower extremity X-rays and to compare the effect in patients with different deformities. Methods. Computed tomography (CT) data of 131 patients with knee pain were retrospectively analyzed. The subjects were categorized into the following groups: neutral (hip-knee-ankle angle (HKAA) between 175 and 185°), varus (HKAA less than 175°), valgus (HKAA more than 185°), and flexion (flexion contracture more than 10°). CT images were digitally reconstructed to anterior-posterior X-ray images using an average intensity projection algorithm. The process was then repeated while rotating the reconstruction plane from internal 9° to external 9°. In this manner, X-ray images were reconstructed in different rotational states. The following angles were measured from reconstructed X-ray images: HKAA, lateral distal femoral angle (LDFA), medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA), and femoral valgus angle (FVA). The measurements were then compared according to the degree of rotation. Results. FVA significantly differed according to rotation in all groups ( P < 0.001 ), with a difference of 1.3° (±0.4°). HKAA significantly changed only in the flexion contracture group ( P < 0.001 ), which showed a difference of 1.0° (±0.7°). However, HKAA in the other groups, LDFA, and MPTA did not significantly differ depending on rotation. Conclusions. Radiographic measurement of FVA is subject to change according to rotation. HKAA significantly changed only in the flexion contracture group, so more care should be taken while obtaining X-rays of patients with flexion contracture.

Backgrounds and Objectives: The spacer block technique in unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) has still a concern related to the precise position of the component in the coronal and sagittal planes compared to intramedullary guide technique. The purposes of this study were to explore whether the spacer block technique would improve the radiological alignment of implants and clinical outcomes compared with the outcomes of the intramedullary guide technique in fixed-bearing medial UKA. Materials and Methods: In total, 115 patients who underwent unilateral, fixed-bearing medial UKA were retrospectively reviewed and divided into group IM (intramedullary guides; n = 39) and group SB (spacer blocks; n = 76). Clinical assessment included range-of-motion and patient-reported outcomes. Radiological assessment included the mechanical femorotibial angle, coronal and sagittal alignments of the femoral and tibial components, and coronal femorotibial congruence angle. In additive manufacturing, bioink formulations govern strategies to engineer 3D living tissues that mimic the complex architectures and functions of native tissues for successful tissue regeneration. Conventional 3D-printed tissues are limited in their ability to alter the fate of laden cells. Specifically, the efficient delivery of gene expression regulators (i.e. microRNAs (miRNAs)) to cells in bioprinted tissues has remained largely elusive. In this study, we explored the inclusion of extracellular vesicles (EVs), naturally occurring nanovesicles (NVs), into bioinks to resolve this challenge. EVs show excellent biocompatibility, rapid endocytosis, and low immunogenicity, which lead to the efficient delivery of miRNAs without measurable cytotoxicity. EVs were fused with liposomes to prolong and control their release by altering their physical interaction with the bioink. Hybrid EVs-liposome (hEL) NVs were embedded in gelatin-based hydrogels to create bioinks that could efficiently encapsulate and deliver miRNAs at the target site in a controlled and sustained manner. The regulation of cells’ gene expression in a 3D bioprinted matrix was achieved using the hELs-laden bioink as a precursor for excellent shape fidelity and high cell viability constructs. Novel regulatory factors-loaded bioinks will expedite the translation of new bioprinting applications in the tissue engineering field.

The near-perivascular accumulation in solid tumors and short-lived span in circulation, derails even the most competent nanoparticles (NPs) from achieving their maximum therapeutic potential. Moreover, delivering them across the blood brain/tumor barrier (BBB/BTB) is further challenging to sought anticancer effect. To address these key challenges, we designed a linearly aligned nucleic acid-complexed polydixylitol-based polymeric nanochains (X-NCs), with inherent hyperosmotic properties enabling transmigration of the BBB/BTB and navigation through deeper regions of the brain tumor. The high aspect ratio adds shape-dependent functional aspects to parent particles by providing effective payload increment and nuclear factor of activated T cells-5 (NFAT5)-mediated cellular uptake. Therefore, serine hydroxymethyltransferase 1 (SHMT1) siRNA-loaded nanochains not only demonstrated to transmigrate the BTB, but also resulted in remarkably reducing the tumor size to 97% in the glioblastoma xenograft brain tumor mouse models. Our study illustrates how the hyperosmotic nanochains with high aspect ratio and aligned structure can accelerate a therapeutic effect in aggressive brain tumors post-transmigration of the BBB/BTB by utilizing an NFAT5 mode of uptake mechanism.

Arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) continues to be the popular treatment for meniscal tears, but recent randomized controlled trials have questioned its efficacy. To provide more evidence-based criteria for patient selection, we undertook this study to identify prognostic factors associated with clinical failure after APM for medial meniscus tears.Medical records of 160 patients followed up for at least 5 years after APM for medial meniscal tears were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic data (age, sex, and body mass index), radiographic variables (Kellgren-Lawrence [K-L] grade and hip-knee-ankle [HKA] angle), and clinical scores (International Knee Documentation Committee score, Tegner activity scale score, Lysholm score, and Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score) were recorded. Clinical failure was defined as the need for an additional surgical procedure (arthroscopy, osteotomy, or arthroplasty) or the presence of intolerable pain. Survivorship analysis with clinical failure as an end point was performed using Kaplan-Meier survival curves. Factors related to clinical failure were analyzed using a Cox proportional hazard model. Cutoff values were determined using areas under receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Radiographic progression of osteoarthritis was analyzed using the chi-square test, and serial changes of clinical scores were analyzed using a linear mixed model.Clinical success rates were 95.7% at 5 years, 75.6% at 10 years, and 46.3% at 15 years. Age, HKA angle, and K-L grade (The poor prognostic factors found to be related to clinical failure after APM for a medial meniscal tear were patient age (≥ 50 years), preoperative K-L grade (≥ grade 2), and preoperative HKA angle (≥ varus 5.5°).
